from my computer. Then, I noticed Gnotime also wouldn't stop the clock

works perfectly. At work, my Ubuntu Firefox doesn't. They are both
running precisely the same version of Firefox.
There are 2 differences:
1) At home, I'm running GNOME; at work, I'm running Fluxbox.
2) At home, I'm runni

this particular laptop/DVD writer. (I have an Acer Aspire AS5750-5513

This problem seems to have gone away.
I did remove the BetterThanAds firefox addon (https://addons.mozilla.org
/en-US/firefox/addon/14638/ ). That may have been it. There were
various errors from the extension because it seems to be a 64-bit thing
whereas I only run 32-bit operating systems when
I don't think memory is the problem. Unless there is a cron job which
runs at night eating up memory. I suppose that's possible.
In any case, below is part of my "top" output, sorted by virtual memory.
There is plenty of memory.
I'll investigate whether a cron job is consuming and using up memo

So, my X session suddenly became stuck. I was moving around the mouse
cursor with the touchpad when it froze. I was using Firefox and about
to click on a tab.
I happened to have had an opportunity to log into this laptop from a
desktop (via ssh) a
I have an Acer Aspire 5740-5513 laptop and the BIOS workaround doesn't
work for me. I don't get the VFS error in dmesg but I am still unable
to mount my backup (data only) iso9660-based DVD. In fact, when I
insert the DVD, it just makes a clicking noise and is completely
inaccessible.

I have an Acer Aspire 5740-5513, which various websites say is an Intel
GMA video card.

My Acer Aspire 5740-5513 laptop does not dim when AC power is removed
and is relying on battery only. I don't know if this is specifically a
gnome-power-manager problem or something to do with the acpi subsystem
in general.

slightly better. The icon doesn't appear as a filling/emptying battery,
but the pull-down menu seems to work again.

The same problem also happens on my Dell Dimension 4700 with ATI Radeon
X300SE graphics card running Intrepid. Desktop freezes except for the
