Public bug reported: Binary package hint: xorg
So, my X session suddenly became stuck. I was moving around the mouse cursor with the touchpad when it froze. I was using Firefox and about to click on a tab. I happened to have had an opportunity to log into this laptop from a desktop (via ssh) and poke around. I first killed the gnome-session. No go. Then, I tried killing "X". It wouldn't die -- a ps revealed "D", as in it was waiting on a device (it wasn't clear which device). I killed the parent gdm process, but X was still around and the screen still frozen. Since killing X was impossible (and therefore CTL-ALT-F1 not an option), I did a "sudo reboot" to reboot the system. I should note that I had logged off my session and logged on a few times. I don't usually do this. I was hoping to get the touchpad wheel scrolling to work better (it's too slow) in my VNC client, but logging off and on didn't help.
