My icon never appears -- it looks just like a "terminal icon" and there is no pulldown menu.
(My volume control icon has a similar problem in that it also has the "terminal icon".) If I run gnome-power-manager as root, the icon appears, but the pulldown still does not work. And the icon eventually disappears.
