In one of my laptops I have a broadcom bcm4312 card. I have a similar
problem (no ip4 address for wlan0) but I found a different "work-
around":
If I do a "ifup wlan0" I see the RUNNING flag missing on wlan0 (output
from ifconfig). I tried a lot of different settings and changes on the

fine; gdm is started and I may log-in to Gnome without any problem.

I did not yet try to run apt-get update to keep the situation for more
bug hunting. I attached a picture showing the last lines of my failing
boot sequence in vmware. I also attached the dmsg file.
One question: If some packages changed why does apt-get dist-upgrade not
load the new packages autom
I made some more tests. I wonder that the Composite option is disabled
in the xorg.conf that I attached - no I can reproduce the effect only by
enabling the Composite option. With disabled Composite option the newest
version of fglrx plays videos in usual speed.

totem-xine very slow since fglr
I boot without splash. The boot sequence breaks with an error message
and bails out into a root shell. I run apt-get dist-upgrade. It does not
load anything from internet (eth0 is already configured) but start to
install the packages that were downloaded before. Of course it ends with
the same erro

Today I was able to boot the first time with the "new" kernel
2.6.17-7-generic (after fixing a bug with wrong grub entry). After that
boot update-manager told me to run a dist upgrade. Don't know if that
had anything to do with the new kern
