Same for me. I am running Efty Edge in vmware-player (installation from Ubuntu 6.04 including all current updates). If I remove the kernel options "splash" and "quiet" before booting with kernel 2.6.17-7-generic it hangs after a message "Begin: Waiting for root file system... ...". Vmware does not need any CPU power anymore and boot strap hangs forever (I waited several minutes).
