I asked a Linux expert to help me on this. The following are the steps
I followed.
After checking many files, & running some programs, he identified that the
problem was caused by the line/s above:
"update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin."

user, like yourself) could detect. Clearing the message seemed enough
to be able to proceed with booting & using the PC.

I am using 11.04.
I have had problems with displaying the Grub boot menu, plus getting a
warning from the monitor (Dell 24 inch) about matching the resolution.
After much "research" & some trial & error with changing Grub2's input
files (GFXMODE & VGA=), I now have the grub menu, but I do get an U
or what, I will look out for the

This morning, I tried to access contacts. Presumably as I had not
cleared the contact's name yesterday, the same contact as yesterday was
in the summary window. Again the window was not responding to open the
contact's detail pages.

He has not had any problem with his printer (or other services).
However, his printer is set-up on his network (i.e. connected to his

I just updated to 2.6.31-22.
3. Whenever the kernel is upgraded, the system applies the wrong hard drive
code to /boot/grub/menu.lst, so I usually tell it to keep the installed version.
I then "usually" edit menu.lst t

1. I now shut-down using "hibernate".
When I next switch on the PC, it boots up quickly to the log-in screen,
which behaves with no problems.
I don't know whether this is a good long-term solution for me...

When I tried to boot, I had problems at the login screen:
