Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

HPLIP
1) Ubuntu 10.04
2) HPLIP 3.10.2-2; CUPS 1.4.3.-1
3) I recently re-built 10.04 on a new hard drive. I hadn't used HPLIP before,
so I installed that, & it recognised my HP printer immediately. I don't leave
my PC running all of the time.

4) The next time that I wanted to use the printer:
1. The printer wasn't recognised by HPLIP
2. The PPD file wasn't found.
3. CUPS could access localhost 631 (or whatever it is called).

My actions:
1. I re-installed HPLIP; this did not fix the problem.
2. I checked the list of PPD's; my printer wasn't listed, so added in some
(from package hpijs I think). That added an ijs driver for my printer. But
that didn't fix the problem.
3. I re-installed cups. This DID fix the problem.

However, the next time that I wanted to use the printer, it again wasn't
recognised & localhost631 was again not available.

4. I re-installed cups. This DID fix the problem, once again.

>From following the debugging procedure, I have the following list from
the terminal:

As you will see, it is OK now, as I mentioned in 4. So, I suppose that
I need to repeat these steps next time that it fails.
