I asked a Linux expert to help me on this. The following are the steps I followed.
After checking many files, & running some programs, he identified that the problem was caused by the line/s above: "update-alternatives: error: no alternatives for iceape-flashplugin." He then asked me to edit "/var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin- installer.prerm", & delete all packages that weren't installed, including iceape-flashplugin. Then run: "sudo sh -x /var/lib/dpkg/info/flashplugin-installer.prerm remove" Then run re-install firefox (which by then was trated as a broken package. This removed adobe-flashplugin & Update manager is again working.
