Robert, Thanks for identifying that my bug 713319 is a duplicate of this one; also for providing the workaround in #10.
If so many of us managed to get ourselves into this situation through ineptness, then it would seem that the "Open with" application should not have the "Remember this application for "folder" files check box" pre-checked. One might ask, why does the problem apply only to "/home" files & not to "computer". By the way, if I right click on a /home folder, the option "open with document viewer" (which was my incorrect default) is listed before the option "open with other application".
