It looks like the OP is using Debian/unstable or Debian/testing. This is
"work in progress" and there was a re-structuring of the language support
packages. So I would consider the problem one of the "rough edges" of the
unstable branch, not a Debian bug.

I just installed LyX 1.5svn-02-05-2007 for Windows under Win XP (I have also
LyX 1.4.4 installed, in case 1.5 doesen't work). Soon I found, that I could not
start LyX 1.5. Starting it in a command-line window gave me the following
output:

You're right, that's the problemn (as the 8th error message says "too many

That's a problem caused by latex, because it tries to hold back floats that it
thinks don't "fit" perfectly on

Latex and generate PDF output with pdflatex.
PDF has the advantage of preserving the layout 100%, so you can be
sure the HR folks get what you want them to get. You don't have to
worry about fonts which are a problem with Word and RTF formats. My
experience is that most people know what to do with a PDF file, but
YMMV.

If I've got Unicode-compliant fonts and a TeX version that can do
(limited) UTF-8, is it much of a hack to use UTF-8 as encoding in LyX?
(i.e. what pains will I have to undergo to get combining accents and
UTF-8 bidirectionality?)

familiar with writing polish, but if you can get there
with xmodmap, it should work regardless of wether you're running GNOME
or KDE. If KDE overrides your mapping (I don't know if it does, but
it is possible, of course) I'm pretty sure there's a way to deactivate
this "feature".

TT fonts are a bit of a hassle to install at first, but in the
long run they are more convenient to work with since they scale
seamlessly at almost any size (unless you want really tiny sizes,
in this case a good bitmap font might even look better, provided
you have matching sizes and supress scaling).
If you prefer to do that, let me know. I could try to walk you
through the xfsft setup, it's not that hard after all.

Are you using the same fonts in both cases? What kind of fonts
are you using (Bitmap, Type1, TrueType)? Is th
ip with italics but oblique versions for emphasis). On
this level, you can substitute anything for anything. If your
typewriter font doesn't provide a bold version, you could
substitute the bold version of an entirely different font if you
feel like.
Hope this clarifies the situation a little bit.
