I am definitely in favour of a newsgroup, if possible parallel to the mailing list or synchronized with it. The newsgroup has the advantage of being a free advertisement for Lyx, and moreover and more importantly it's instantly accessible (I don't have to carry my mailing list repository around with me if I change locations). People also tend to write more freely if they don't have to go through a mailing list's subscribe-authenticate process.
