Why bother about the Debian installer. Even when its
final version is released it may still be ncurses
based install. Better alternative is to use Knoppix as
install disk for Debian and thereafter to tweak the
system as desired.

I think you are talking about 'parted' which is a gnu
software. It comes with Debian as also other
distributions like Mandrake and Redhat. To use it
however he has to boot from floppy which should also
contain the compiled 'parted' utility. Well, it is
possible to recover the partitions.

Linux is quite demanding as regards the hardware
health. You can try a CD cleaning kit, and may be blow
some air into your CDROM drive to dislodge any dust

Although there is a kernel-HOWTO, your best bet is to
download the RPMs from Redhat site. There is also a
Redhat specific kernel-upgrade-Howto provided by
Redhat.
