Normally the distribution's web site gives detail of the hardware supported by them. For example Mandrake provides such list at http://www.linux-mandrake.com/en/hardware.php3. Even if your distrib is not Mandrake it may give you some indication regards compatibility. You may also check www.linuxhardware.org for a review of the particular piece of hardware.
