Priority to user on local machine in mouse/keyboard event handlin g.

2001-07-11 Thread Sharma, Shashi

Is it possible to setup vncserver so that the mouse/keyboard handling on the
local machine take precedence over the remote client(vncviewer). That is if
the person on the console moves the mouse, then the vncviewer is set to
read-only mode and as soon as the person stops moving the mouse, the
vncviewer is set back to the read-write mode.

Where can I get the docs for RFB 4.0/5.0 ? And
Can we add a request in the RFB protocol to query for the pointer/keyboard

Just a side note here: My company has just released a new software version
for our videoconferencing equipment that support a VNC client (RFB 3.3).
Since VNC is GPL we naturally had to handcode everything from scratch based
on the RFB documentation (we can't release the source since we're using a
single linked image that contains source code from other vendors, such as
the embedded operating system - and we surely don't want to violate the
GPL).

I think that getting more and more support for VNC is a "good thing", so I
just hope that further RFB releases do not make too extensive use of other
full GPL'ed packages that will be "close to impossible" to recode for more
specialized targets. If one could try to use a bit more liberal licenses
(such as LGPL or even BSD) I think that would help a lot. We're absolutely
not trying to capitalize on GPL based software, we just thought that VNC was
the best thing out there to get this kind of support for our systems (also
since we're then not strictly tied to the Windows platform when it comes to
the server side).

best regards,

I have found Netmeeting to be a "virtual" nightmare through a secure
firewall. VNC has some security problems of its own, however routing VNC
could not be simpler or more secure. Kudos for the designers of VNC on this
point. Netmeeting requires multiple outbound and inbound ports including
389, 522 and 1503. These pose a potential security risk to your network.
VNC uses its own port of 5900 that can be customized by terminal. This is
much better than using existing LDAP, TCP and UDP ports as you do not run
the risk of an intruder utilizing these ports to gain entry to other
resources. In my opinion there is no comparison between Netmeeting and VNC.
If anyone does figure out how to route Netmeeting through a single port, I
would be more than interested to know how.
In future releases of VNC I would love to see communication between client
and server be encrypted within the program, rather than using a tunnelling
or third party packet encryption method.

That was my question. the only way vnc will not work is when you remove
tcp/ip from the machine. the newer windows os will not even let you do it.
tcp/ip and netbeui can sit side by side so why wouldnt you allow tcp/ip for
vnc.

I still need "netbeui" whuich stands for netbios extended user interface if
I wish to capture a printer port from a dos window under Windows 9x for
remote printing.

Not withstanding anything available on large systems I still find dos based
multi user accounting applications 100 times more reliable & crash proof
than anyrthing available on windows platform. For small businesses involving
10 to 12 computers it is still a very good solution.

As a rule I have VNC server running on all the machines on a pper ro peer

The history behind NetBEUI dates back to the old IBM LAN Manager days
roughly 1985, Microsoft quickly adopted this transport for their
Windows for Workgroups strategy, this transport was designed to be used in
small LAN environments that would be connected to other
LAN segments or mainframes using a gateway. Here are some of the advantages
of this small compact transport. Very fast in small LANs,
it has good error protection and it uses very little memory. Here are some
of the disadvantages. It is not routable, and the performance
over WANs is very poor, to get around these limitations Novell developed
NetBEUI over IPX for routing, the rest is history. NetBEUI is
still available as a installable transport because there still are small
LANs in operation and NetBEUI fits this role very well. Hope this
answered your question.

On unix you can start Xvnc with -alwaysshared. This will autmatically share
even if the viewer is not asking for it.
On WinVNC the registry entry under HKLM\Software\ORL\WinVNC3
ConnectPriority DWORD = 1
will do the same.

at the moment i can only check it on my Win2k box, but it should work

Invoke "vncviewer" with "-shared" (unix) or "/shared" (windows). Or choose
options onthe startup dialog and check "Request shared session" (It's in the

Hope that helps

I can't seem to get Connect Priority working like
intended.

To quote the documentation:

ConnectPriority indicates what WinVNC should do when a
non-shared connection is received:
0 = Disconnect all existing connections.
1 = Don't disconnect any existing connections.
2 = Refuse the new connection.

On my NT server, I put the DWORD ConnectPriority in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORL\WinVNC3\Default and
gave it a value of 1.

I stopped and started the VNC service and connected my
Linux box. As long as I specify -shared, or click the
sharing button on a Windows client, I can connect
other clients and share the server. I connected my
Linux box and a Windows 2000 laptop.

As soon as a client tries to connect that does not
have sharing enabled, it disconnects all existing
connections and logs in.

Is this not working as the documenation said it
should? I can't enable sharing on every viewer.

Please advise, oh wise and mighty group members.

Hey folks.

Is it possible to create a "fake" VNC server? I'm sure it is, but has
anyone done it, or are there any comments on what would need to be done.

Lets say I have an embedded device with no display whatsoever (not even any
display hardware), connected via Ethernet. I want to use the Java Viewer
(or any viewer, really) and connect to this device to view a bunch of
screens that have been created *somewhere* in the embedded device by an
application that I've written to handle all the mouse and keyboard events
coming over the network. No changes to the viewer really, but a server for
completely abstract display.

Any thoughts?

Hello everybody,

I've got a problem when using vnc. I f someone knows something anout it,
I
did not find anything neither in the mailing list archive, nor in the
FAQ.
Here is the detailed issue:

Environment: Solaris
Using a pool of machines, I need to be able to start some jobs
on different machines, each of them running under X display (the
job is embedded into a short script which opens a vnc session on
the machine).

Here is a part of the launch script:
set nvclog = `$XVNCHOME/vncserver -depth 24 -nolisten local |&
/bin/grep 'Log file is' | /bin/awk '{print $4}'` # runs the server
set nvcdisplay = `basename ${nvclog:r}` # and gets the display host
and port

During its execution, the job sometimes run into trouble and cannot
access the X display. Here is the message I sometimes (unreproducible)
get
from my application ():

> Xlib: connection to "cdssoph38:1.0" refused by server
> Xlib: Client is not authorized to connect to Server
> xwd: unable to open display 'cdssoph38:1'
> usage: xwd [-display host:dpy] [-debug] [-help] [-root|-id |-name ]
[-nobdrs] [-out ] [-xy] [-add value] [-frame]
> xwdtopnm: couldn't read XWD file header

Do you know any possible reason for this problem?

Thanks,

Olivier.

I dont know whether this will work or not(I am not able to reproduce the
problem) but you may try

Select the vncviewer window press Shift Key (and keeping it pressed) select
any other window and release the shift key.

If this doesnt work try
Select any window (other than vncviewer) and press Shift key and keeping it
pressed select the vncviewer window and release the key.

Try this with both the shift key.

I have searched around on this list and web sources but found no
mention of a problem that confronts me regularly when using both the X
and Win32 viewers to connect to a Win32 host.

The connection can get corrupted in such a way that the shift key is
permanently down with respect to mouse clicks. Selection of a certain
file, for example, then becomes impossible. Worse, an innocent
double-click on a file on the desktop can open almost everything on
the desktop.

If I close the connection and reconnect, the problem remains.
Sometimes (all the time?) if I wait several minutse before
reconnecting, the problem goes away.

Another way to cure the problem is to launch an application in which
you can type text (Notepad, search panel, etc.), and type some text.
The text appears in lower-case, and after having done this, the shift
key is unstuck.

This problem is a pretty crippling one, especially when you
accidentally open 50 files at once and have to click away 50 windows.
I do not know what specifically triggers the problem, but I can rely
on VNC developing it if I use a connection for a while (an hour?). I
have observed it on the VNC host on two different W2k machines and a
WinXP machine. (I have observed it using clients on each of those
three machines and using an X client -- though other evidence strongly
suggests it is a host not a client problem.) I have observed it when
running as a service and when manually run as an application. I have
observed it connecting directly to the host and connecting via ssh and
a local socket (X client to one of the W2k hosts). I have observed it
with full-color bandwidth and with reduced 8-bit bandwidth. As to
permutations of the above, I have tried many but perhaps not all.

Any help solving this problem will be greatly appreciated.

RE: VNC Video Driver (Hook) for Win2K

2002-03-06 Thread Sharma, Shashi

As far as I know, you have to use the vnc server bundled with the driver.
You can also patch the code changes to tightvnc and make it work.

1.The normal WinVNC server will not use the video hook driver. You will have
to use the one Rudi wrote.
2. You can use any vncviewer but then you may not be able to use jpeg
encoding.

Specifically TightVNC. Or is it necessary to use the WinVNC Dist. that is

Subject: Winvncdrv Update (drivers for w2k and nt4)

Hi all,

After a weekend of hard work, and some good tips a new version is
available.

Encoder/decoder are now loaded as plugins. This gives more freedom and
the core
stays compatible with the old at&t version.

Changes:

Viewer
-Standard at&t viewer with plugin module
-decoders jpeg and jpeg-b&w as plugins

Server
-Standard at&t server with plugin module and video driver
-Because not all functions are available on nt4 and w2k, there are 2
version of the server
and video driver.
-encoders jpeg and jpeg-b&w as plugins

Video driver:
-w2k
-nt4 (still some regs to change manual)
Forgot in readme,
dword have to be 1 or driver won't start, change in reg file
"Attached.ToDesktop"=dword:0001

Download:
http://services.simac.be/vnc/winvncdrv/sources
vncviewer.exe
vncdrvw2k.exe
vncdrvnt4.exe
Source code needs a cleanup first, in the near future

Todo:
+Try to find some more bugs. To get it fully stable.
+Who can program a little util to copy and changes some reg keys and
value on nt4
+New stuff...?
+Tight : there are to many changes in the code, the encoder is in all
parts Plugin ?

BUG:
Don't restart the driver (stopdrv+startdrv) while a client is
active.-->bsod.

Rudi De Vos

Thanks again Laurentiu for the helping me out on nt4.

What would be REALLY cool, if Constantin & yourself got together, and made
a "UltimateVNC", combining your excellent driver and plugin encancements,

What would be a even better idea, would be to intregrate all these VNC

as currently we have to choose between either running TightVNC or the
WinVNC driver, We can't have both...

I install VNC on linux(at x86 machine) and try to connect to vncserver from

Gabor, I think a writer that would sum up VNC with

"WinVNC is strictly for techies with a masochistic bent"

is going to miss a lot of things...:)

Interestingly enough, pcAnywhere has asymmetric support but has
soft-pedaled it. They developed Java and an ActiveX clients in 1997 which
were put onto their CDs - and they have since done zero development. AFAIK,
they still distribute the ActiveX/Java clients on every CD.

Timbuktu, in contrast, requires a client - a "light" one, but a preinstalled
client nonetheless. This makes them relatively unusual in the field since
Citrix, Windows Terminal Services, and PCI NetSupport as a comparison all
offer ActiveX client controls which can be downloaded R/T from the server
into IE an even I believe Konqueror on Linux. (Could someone set me straight
on the last? I understand Konqueror has ActiveX support implemented, but I'm
not sure how far it goes).

FYI, anyone who has to connect to a variety of systems remotely may be
interested in taking a look at the Tier6 package I put together. It only
works on platforms with Internet Explorer 5+ supporting ActiveX :( at
present. It allows rapid integrated connections via IP to VNC, Citrix,
pcAnywhere, Windows Terminal Services, and PCI NetSupport hosts. The URL

RE: Locale - Solaris 2.7 and VNC

Try the following; it works in my machine
Add
-fp
"/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/F3bitmaps/,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Type1/,/us
r/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/Speedo/,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/misc/,/usr/openwi
n/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/,/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/"

to your Xvnc command line.
In the fontpath the directory should enter with forward slash. Also,
TrueType font cannot be loaded by Xvnc(someone correct me if i am wrong).

Subject: Locale - Solaris 2.7 and VNC

Hi,

I've been having several problems getting VNC up and running on Solaris
2.7. It works fine with Solaris 2.6. I've tracked the problem down to
the locale settings, when upgrading to 2.7 I have set the default locale
to the new 'Euro' locale (en_GB.ISO8859-15) rather than the old en_UK
locale. If at the CDE desk top I use the language option to en_GB I can
run the server sucessfully. 'Otherwise when the windows manager starts up
(I'm using olwm) I get a fatal error -- Could not find any fonts to use.
Exiting'.

Setting the font path manually doesn't work, because I then find the that
two fonts:-

/usr/openwin/lib/local/iso_8859_15/X11/fonts/TrueType
/usr/openwin/lib/X11/fonts/F3

will not load (font path cannot be set error).

Based on this I reached the conclusion that if I set the olwm -basiclocale
to en_GB. But when I do this I start to get errors regarding the lack of
certain font sets. If I set the basic locale to en_UK then I just get a
general not fonts to use error.

What is it about the new fonts that vnc doesn't like? Is there a way to
force my windows manager to use the en_GB locale correctly even when the
desktop is running a different locale? Any suggestions would be welcomed.

We already have that. A typical Xvnc listens for X apps on :1 and also
listens for VNC clients on :1, where :1 and :1 are two completely
different things. :-/

It's even possible, though rare, to have Xvnc use completely different
display numbers for X and RFB, which could be incredibly confusing to
someone who doesn't understand the difference between :1 and :1. And
the system breaks down completely if you have 100+ displays.

It would be a lot less confusing if all VNC implementations used a
single port for RFB. Xvnc would still have an X display number, but
anyone using X can be expected to figure that out.

The current system only makes good sense on one platform, and it doesn't
scale.

In a VNC implementation with a single port serving multiple displays,
each display would still need some kind of identifier, and it would make
sense for Xvnc to continue to use the X display number for that purpose.
It would even work with display numbers > 99, which would be refreshing.

That would be nice too. Xvnc currently has command line options with
which you can specify either port number or display number. It would be
nice if other implementations had that feature as well.

Its in vnchooks.dll. the function is defined in vnchooks.cpp.
This allow hooking into window message loop and getting the screen update

Xvnc + XIE

2002-03-29 Thread Sharma, Shashi

I took the tightvnc code and modified config/cf/vnc.cf
#define BuildXIElib YES
Added the XIE directory from XFree86 3.3.2 src tree to the Xvnc tree and
build it.
I was able to compile everything cleanly but when I run Xvnc, the xdpyinfo
does not show XIE extension. What else I have to do to make enable the XIE
extension ?
Maybe, I am doing something really stupid I dont know much abt XServer code
so thats a strong possibility.
If you can give me some pointers that will be very helpful.
Thanks

Has anyone ever experienced any issues with VNC and Novell networks? We
have noticed a few of our outlying locations on our Wan seem to be
running extremely slow on running the Novell login script.

These PC's are Celeron 500MHz+, 128MB Ram+ - and the only major change
has been adding VNC.

Any information is appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi all,

New alfa update available http://services.simac.be/vnc/winvncdrv/sources

Acc_vncw2k32bpp.exe

Finally the blit part is eliminated from the vncserver, the video driver
provides the update rectangles and bitmap data.
This gives a big speed boostand looower cpu.
Most of the solid rectangles are driver detected ..eliminated for
checking by vnc.
The hookdll is no longer needed.
Driver is auto loaded on client start, and unloaded on client
logout.(screen is reset 640x480 256 and back to old settings)

Test version. (32bpp)
The driver is running stable "I didn't had any more blue screens the
last days", but
there changed a lot insite the driver. Use with care..
It only works when the server is in 32bpp mode, for the other bpp the
screen is messed up.

PIII 1Ghz ati rage pro 128 (tested in loopback mode)
server (5-20% cpu)
viewer (30-50% cpu)
media player (50-70% cpu)

The viewer sometimes take 10x the amount the server use (loopback)
?
Can someone do some test on low bandwidth...
Bugs.

Haven't looked at the Xvnc source yet. But there are a number of things
that might compose such a limit.

* a hard-coded limit

* the file descriptor limit (need one per XOpenDisplay, plus one per
screen, plus one per hardware input device, plus one to just listen on
each type of connection (local - of possibly more than one flavor,
network),
  plus maybe a few more

* max stack depth

* sufficient vm

See
http://www.sunmanagers.org/pipermail/sunmanagers/2001-September/006231.html
for a way to increase the number of clients on Xsun. Basically, you add
   -clients 1024
to the command line for Xsun. 128 is also a valid value, not sure if
anything
else is. I think this trades off against something else, i.e. increasing
number of clients decreases some other thing like maybe number of atoms or
max number of properties or something like that.

This is a C++ code so it wont compile in Xvnc. You have to define the

RE: How viewer state is saved for later restoration

2002-04-04 Thread Sharma, Shashi

VNCViewer --
Reads the graphics update from the server and paint it on the local screen
and send the keyboard and mouse event to server.
VNServer:
Stores all the state of the display. It is stored whether you do
connect to the server or not

Lets create 1024x768 memory buffer and whenever application want to draw I
will update the memory. So at anypoint in time If i deliver the memory
buffer to the vncviewer the viewer will see the full desktop in the current
state.
Now you connect to the server at some point in time and do something with
it. The memory buffer is updated and you see the update on your viewer. You
disconnect from the server. The vncserver will merely stop you sending the
update but the applications are running and they may be updating the buffer.

You connect at some other point to the vncserver, vncserver will send you
thefull copy of the memory buffer again and you again see the desktop.

Coming to your question, vncserver stores all the graphic state in the
memory buffer which is always available to the application (x client) no
matter whether one is conencted of not.
THERE IS NO VIEWER STATE. Nothing is happening on the viewer, which gets
the update from the server and send the event.
Hope that clears your doubt.

Subject: How viewer state is saved for later restoration

Hi

May be my question yesterday was confusing to many.
Here I am putting in a different way.

1. I connect to a VNC Server from my office Desktop
2. Then I start some application and start editing a
mail... Then I leave in the middle of the mail
editing.
(I am assuming that whatever application I am running
is being stored in the VNC server)

3. Now I connect from Home Desktop to the same VNC
Server.
4. As per VNC's document, I should be able to see the
mail editing application being started so that I can
complete the editing.

So my question is, where is the VNC code which
remembers the viewers' state, so that when I connect
from Home, gives the same desktop (i.e restore the
same desktop to that of the Office Viewer, with all
the opened applications at that time) to the new
viewer ?

Hope the question is clear this time.

Chandra

Are you a unix person? '~' is your home directory. Try this:

cd ~
cd .vnc
ls

do you see xstartup?

Should see it this way too:

ls ~/.vnc/xstartup

Hi,

For some whild ideas, I'm looking for a vncviewer that runs at a
pc/linux text console, without the need for an X11 server. The linux
framebuffer may be used.

Is such a viewer available?
Is someone working on such a thing?

Reason: Replacing the X11 (XFree) server with the
Xvnc/console-vnc-viewer provides the same functionallity as the windows
port.

RE: VDACC-WINVNC, WORKING ON W2K AND NT4

2002-04-13 Thread Sharma, Shashi

Rudi,
Installed the new driver for NT.
Since I had the older version alerady installed, I just copied the dll to
system32 and sys to system32\drivers.

Some observations
1. The CPU usage is now very low. On an idle screen the CPU goes to 2%.
2. The updates are coming slower than the previous version. On the older
version, if I run wintach(benchmark program), I see more update. The updates
are still coming faster than the AT&T version.

3. The colors on the remote screens are wrong.
Blue -> Green
Green -> Blue
Red -> Red

4. The tightvnc vncviewer performs much better than the version you have on
your site. In your version the remote disllay is flickering but tightvnc
viewer does not flicker.

4. The media player (www.msnbc.com) on the remote viewer, will display the
video for some time on the screen but will go black afterwards.

This version is a vast improvement from the older version.
Thanks for your effort. Appreciate it.

Subject: VDACC-WINVNC, WORKING ON W2K AND NT4

Hi all,

Finaly got the video driver to work on nt4.

driver for NT4 + install instructions: vdacc-drivernt41.10.exe
driver for w2k + install instructions: vdacc-driverw2k1.10.exe
winvncserver and viewer: vdacc-vnc1.10.exe
Remember, drivers and vnc version are going together. (shared memory)

Upgrade driver, override old vncdrv.dll and vnchelp.dll (system32),
don't install the driver again.
2 times installing the driver = 2 mirror drivers

The server is compatible with the normal vnc viewers, only you miss some
extra options.

THIS IS STILL BETA
w2k driver runs a while without blue screens.
nt4 is just finished, take care

Greetings
Rudi

RE: VNC on VMS

Thanks. That was a good idea. I am thinking of running Xvnc on a sun box and
on VMS setting the display to the sun
on vms
export DISPLAY=sunbox:1

I cannot recal if there is a port. I have seen VMS displays on a vncviewer
with the next construction:

Desktop machine with whatever OS to run vncviewer, unix (linux) machine to
run `vncserver -query `. This gives a vms login session (decsession
?) at the vms machine.

I cannot reproduce the above setup, the machine did not survive Y2K. I only
recall that the vms machine needs to have tcp/ip configured an that it
works.

What happens if you do on the sun: `vncserver -query vaxmachine`? Does it
give you a Xterminal login at the vax machine?

Check the following.
1. Is your vnc software on the network drive ?
A service cannot be on the network drive so you got to put in your local
drive.

2. Did you install the vnc and moved the executable or rename the drive ?
In which case you have to run(from the directory where winvnc.exe exitst)
winvnc -remove
winvnc -install

I think its a NT/W2K requirement. What happens is
1. The network drives are mounted when a user logs in.
2. The service starts during bootup at that point there may not be any one
logged in. Even is there is a user logged in his network drive may not be
mapped to the one which was there during installation.

Right click on VNC icon on the tray and select Close VNC. This will stop the
winvnc service.
When you want the connection back, start the VNC Server service.

you can write a batch file to do all this
stopconnect.bat
-- cut here ---
@echo off
net stop winvnc
- cut here --
startconnect.bat
-- cut here ---
@echo off
net start winvnc
--- cut here

Create the two batch file and put it in your desktop.

RE: vncpasswd for Windows

2002-04-19 Thread Sharma, Shashi

I dont think you can get the cleartext from the password.
The file which does the job of authenticating is d3des.c file in the source
code.

The way it works on the vnc is
server sends a challenge to client ->16 bytes
client reads the challenget and then encyrpt it with the password
and send back the response.
Server knows the challenge it sent and then compare it with what it expects

Single Shared Appliation

Hi Everyone,

[...]
Contribs pages. I have applied all the code to the 3.3.3r7 src, and
removed the Corba stuff from my project so it will compile, and am now down
to a problem with the following function:

HWND fenetre = m_client->m_buffer->GetHwndFn();

In Particular, I do not have any function by the name GetHwndFn anywhere
[...]

The function GetHwndFn() doesnt exist in the vncBuffer class and the
compiler complains about the missing function.

Does anybody know how to fix this problem ?
Thanks in advance

GDI DLL Wrapper

2001-03-08 Thread Sharma, Shashi

Hi,
I am interested in writing a Wrapper DLL over GDI in order to trap the
graphics update. I am familiar with PE format and have patched few DLLs,
however, I have little idea how will the WinVNC uses this information.

I propose the following.
1. Write a DLL GDI32.DLL with all the function of MS supplied GDI functions.
2. Each function in the new DLL does the following. Write to a named pipe
the following structure
CARD16 length; //lenght of the structure
CARD32 processID; // process id
CARD32 threadID; // thread ID
BYTE funcName[SOME_LEN]; // function name
ARGS1 // first argument to the function
ARGS2
...
...
ARGS1, ARG2 are the arugment to the original function.
3. After writing to the pipe, the function calls the original function from
the MS DLL.

So, if someone is intersted in working on the WinVNC stuff I will help put
up the GDI wrapper DLL.
Thanks

probably send the process/thread death messages to the WinVNC

If you can make the DLL only send data for functions that have been
requested to send hook data, using a set of flag bits, then the idea
sounds reasonable. I'm not sure how well it will work in practice,
though. WinVNC is really just interested in knowing when an area of the
display bitmap has been written to (we can leave CopyRect for later).

RE: GDI DLL Wrapper

2001-03-10 Thread Sharma, Shashi

I installed the RAdmin program today. There is no GDI.dll in the system32
directory but the program installs a driver Raddr.dll which loads in Base
group(very early in the boot process).
I am assuming it is hooking to vga driver and rom the export table one can
see that it is using function from ntoskrnl.exe.

The other thing is noticed at msdn is that there is an api called
SetWinEventHook and NotifyWinEvent. These APIs looks interesting to me.

It isn't part of the Win32 API. It is part of the Active Accessibility
SDK, like I said. You can download that SDK at:

http://www.microsoft.com/enable/msaa/download.htm#SDK

The gdi.lib included there has such a function. The gdi32.lib does not.
This functionality was not in the original 95, and would require that the
redistributable parts of Active Accessibility be installed.

You can write your own header from the documentation given, and then link
against gdi.lib to gain linkage to the actual function.

DWORD CALLBACK DDIHookProc(
  HDDI hddi,
  LONG lPrivateData,
  DDITYPE ddiType,
  LPDDIPARAMS lpDDIStruct
);

WINDDIAPI HDDI WINAPI SetDDIHook(
  HDC hdcHook,
  HMODULE hModCode,
  LONG lPrivateData,
  UINT hookClass,
  DDIHOOKPROC lpfnDdiHook
);

WINDDIAPI DWORD WINAPI CallNextDDI(
  HDDI hddi,
  DDITYPE ddiType,
  LPDDIPARAMS lpDdiParams
);

WINDDIAPI BOOL WINAPI UnhookDDIHook(
  HDDI hddi
);

You'll probably also need the 95/98 DDK (Driver Development Kit) to get
access and documentation for the actual calls that get passed through this
interface.

Since it does not exist in gdi32.lib, I wonder exactly how it works, and if
it actually catches everything. I bet it catches all GDI calls, but
doesn't catch any of the DirectDraw or WinG calls. However, the
documentation specifically states that it works in 95 AND 98, so if it was
a "typo" it was the biggest bloody typo I've ever seen. 2000 has a
different system, which I will report as soon as I find the name of it
again, which does the same thing, but in an incompatible way (of course...
They couldn't do the 16 bit DLL thing in 2000).

This system is also available in NT 4, SP4 or higher.

I *strongly* suspect that this interface is what RAdmin uses to gain its
considerable speed. If you've ever used it, it is frequently hard to tell
that you are at a remote terminal at all. Of course, it only works for
Win32 to Win32 remoting, and it does cost some money. But if we could use
this SetDDIHook interface in VNC, we could laugh maniacally as we have
blazing fast remote control of Windows servers from Linux machines.

RE: but exactly which part of ftp is possibly unsafe?

2001-03-13 Thread Sharma, Shashi

I think the unsafe part of the ftp is that it uses two different ports and
by default one is outbound and the other is inbound. Port 21 is used for
sending ftp commands and the other port(20 by default) is used for actual
data. All client I have seen changes the data port to something else and
that could be a problem with the firewall.

with all this current ftp discussion and my thread on ftp
from a few weeks ago, i will bring up this question again:

Posed simply, many claim that ftp is 'unsafe', but where is
the risk? from what i understand, ftp doesn't have any
built in encryption, so to the extent that a file can be
intercepted, it can also be read (unless the user manually
encrypts the file). If that is the major security concern,
well ok, that at least is something that is manageable. If,
OTOH, the concern is that a server (to make it simple,
assume one running on a win 2000 pro OS) can be corrupted
and broken in to (meaning one can bypass any password
protection and/or have access to all files on that machine -
not just the restricted zomes) well, that's a much larger
problem.

so, again, in a broad sense, where is the risk and is it a
real or apocryphal?

RE: problem with installation/use of vnc

2001-03-14 Thread Sharma, Shashi

I think you have to run the program as root.(There is something in the FAQ
on how to run as nonroot). In any case try running
Xvnc :
directly from the shell as a root.

Gerald,

Not positive, but you might want to change your path variable to have
/usr/local/bin first instead of your user bin directory (or now that I think
of it, ./ should be first). Also, have you tried calling Xvnc explicitly IE
/usr/local/bin/Xvnc ?

Subject: problem with installation/use of vnc

hi all.

i have just installed vnc 3.3.3 'vnc-3.3.3r2_x86_linux_2.0.tgz' by
just copying the files:

 Xvnc
 vncconnect
 vncpasswd
 vncserver
 vncviewer

to

/usr/local/bin

which of course is in my path; 'echo $PATH' gives:

/home/gerald/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/openwin/bi
n:/usr/lib/java/bin:/var/lib/dosemu:/usr/games/bin:/usr/games:.:/usr/bin/TeX
:/usr/local/Office40/bin

'uname -a' gives:

   Linux aardvark 2.0.34 #67 Thu Jun 18 17:04:10 MEST 1998 i686 unknown

this is S.u.S.E 5.2 b.t.w. also 'gcc -v' gives

   Reading specs from
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1/2.95.1/specs
gcc version 2.95.1 19990816 (release)

in case someone needs to know what version of glibc i have?

the problem is that when i run 'vncserver' i get errors in
~/.vnc/aardvark:1.log: the following is a typical output:

sh: /home/gerald/bin/Xvnc: No such file or directory
   _X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
   _X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111

is there any work-around this problem?

i urgently need to get vnc running. i was running an older version
before. it worked fine except for programs like gimp.

any form of help would be greatly appreciated.

regards.

I've looked through the FAQ's and mailing list but did not find anything.
Any

Has anybody tried compiling x0rfbserver ? I am trying to compile on Solaris

ld: fatal: symbol symbol 'dec(ios &) ' is multiply defined"

RE: Unix $DISPLAY env variable

2001-04-12 Thread Sharma, Shashi

Actually the authorization checks in XServer is per user.
IF you start Xvnc with -ac option then it will disable authorization checks,
which is equivalent to xhost +

There is one more convoluted way of doing it without -ac option by using
xauth command.

Subject: Unix $DISPLAY env variable

Hi,

I have run into a problem with my VNC server that I run on Unix.

If I su to another user and I want the users environment I use the command
"% su - username".
This asks me then for that users password and sources that users env
scripts, etc.

The problem is that my DISPLAY variable does not get set. And if I set the
display variable to one of the following (assuming that the server was
assigned :1 as it's display number):

hostname:1.0
:1.0
:1

Then I get something like: "xterm Xt error: Can't open display: :1" etc. If
DISPLAY is not set then of course I can't open any Xwindows. And
interestingly enough if I set DISPLAY to hostname:0.0, it opens the window
in my root display (Not the VNC client). It would be fine if I could fix
this using xhost, but I didn't change hosts, just userid.

So, my question is.. How do I have to set my DISPLAY env variable to open X
windows if I change my userid? Setting it to the same thing as other windows
in my client have (hostname:1.0) does not work unless I am that user. Is
this some type of security feature, or is it a problem that no one has run
into yet?

-Brooke

Please CC comments to [EMAIL PROTECTED]

BTW- VNC is very cool. I am using it to work from home with my ADSL
connection and find the delay tolerable. I suppose using Xprotocol (like I
expect Exceed does) would speed it up, but then you probably lose the "same
display from anywhere" feature. I am looking forward to trying x2vnx.

I'm running Xvnc version 3.3.3r2 on a Solaris 2.6. I successfully set

resolutions.

Note: I use a script to start Xvnc from inetd.conf and Xvnc has the SGID

But, i connect on any of these ports and i just see the grey desktop

I've seen that somebody from the vnc-list uses Xvnc on Solaris.
Please can you explain to me how you execute dtlogin when you connect on
the VNC server?

Ok, granted I can say xhost+ and it works, but then I have disabled all my
X security. Starting VNC with -ac also disables all security. Does anyone
know the right command xhost or xauth to add just the user. I have looked
at the man pages and tied a buch of combinations with no success.

xhost +nis:user@
addes access for user 'user', but apparently not for the VNC disaply
host:1.0

xauth generate does not work on my host, and I dont have any key data for
the add command.

Information on the omniORB list indicates that much of the site content and

Will the same be done with this list?

Thank you to the lab's crew for their work on projects like VNC and omniORB,

Just to let everyone know I've ported VNC to the XFree86 4.x
architecture, and it's a loadable module.

This is a port of the TightVNC 1.2.2 codebase.

There are two scenarios. The traditional Xvnc server supporting the
new XFree86 4 features like RENDER, and the vnc.so module which with
an accompanied modified display driver you can remote manage your
desktop. I've also added a vncfb driver that works the same as Xvnc.

It also supports multihead, although the vncviewer's will need support
adding for this.

Documentation, binaries & source is available at http://xf4vnc.sf.net.

Contributions are welcome.

I believe Solaris had a porting kit for the XFree86 video drivers. I
understand it should work that that, but no promises.
