I think you have to run the program as root.(There is something in the FAQ
on how to run as nonroot). In any case try running
Xvnc :<display_number>
directly from the shell as a root.

Gerald,

Not positive, but you might want to change your path variable to have
/usr/local/bin first instead of your user bin directory (or now that I think
of it, ./ should be first). Also, have you tried calling Xvnc explicitly IE
/usr/local/bin/Xvnc ?

Subject: problem with installation/use of vnc

hi all.

i have just installed vnc 3.3.3 'vnc-3.3.3r2_x86_linux_2.0.tgz' by
just copying the files:

     Xvnc
     vncconnect
     vncpasswd
     vncserver
     vncviewer

to

    /usr/local/bin

which of course is in my path; 'echo $PATH' gives:

/home/gerald/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/bin:/usr/openwin/bi
n:/usr/lib/java/bin:/var/lib/dosemu:/usr/games/bin:/usr/games:.:/usr/bin/TeX
:/usr/local/Office40/bin

'uname -a' gives:

   Linux aardvark 2.0.34 #67 Thu Jun 18 17:04:10 MEST 1998 i686 unknown

this is S.u.S.E 5.2 b.t.w. also 'gcc -v' gives

   Reading specs from
/usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnulibc1/2.95.1/specs
gcc version 2.95.1 19990816 (release)

in case someone needs to know what version of glibc i have?

the problem is that when i run 'vncserver' i get errors in
~/.vnc/aardvark:1.log: the following is a typical output:

sh: /home/gerald/bin/Xvnc: No such file or directory
   _X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111
   _X11TransSocketINETConnect: Can't connect: errno = 111

is there any work-around this problem?

i urgently need to get vnc running. i was running an older version
before. it worked fine except for programs like gimp.

any form of help would be greatly appreciated.

regards.
