Re: [RBW] Dahon Hon Solo, Front Loader

2015-09-28 Thread Patrick Moore
Thanks. I am enjoying it more than I thought I would. I had feared that it
would be squirrely, but while it certainly doesn't handle like a Rivendell,
it is surprisingly (to me, at least, after what I'd read) stable and
neutral; quicker than a "real" bike but still pleasant to ride.

And I find the folding size, roughly that of a largish suitcase, to be
surprisingly convenient. I've always preferred cars which accept a bike in
the back without removing wheels, and my 26" wheel road bikes fit
particularly well, but even so, a bike folded in half with 20" wheels just
goes in and out so much easier.

And the folding mechanism seems to be very well thought out. I generally
leave seatpost and handle bar alone, and just drop the stem (it fold
sideways), and then unlatch the frame hinge and fold it in the middle. You
can then lift it almost like a suitcase.

I have on order (from listmembers) a Nelson Longflap and a Nitto saddlebag
Grip; eventually I hope to swap out the M 737s with M 324s with a
no-retention side.

Since taking that photo I've swapped the MKS Urbans for the old Shimano
SPDs, and switched the fenders: front to rear and rear to front for better
coverage. I rode it a very short distance through flooded streets last week
after a southwester downpour, and the fenders, despite being flat and
narrow, worked pretty well. I gave each a generous application of Johnson's
Furniture Wax.

Altogether I'm quite happy with it.

[RBW] Re: Carless? How many miles per day do you ride?

2015-09-28 Thread 'Clayton' via RBW Owners Bunch

My riding situation is urban-ish. I live carless, and have for many years.
I hate cars. My wife was killed in a car wreck, then there are the drunk
drivers, global warming etc. Since dumping cars, the quality of my life
went up. The miles I put on my Atlantis vary, as I don't ride, unless I
need to go somewhere, or I really need some time in the forest. I don't
rent cars or take public transportation, so I ride everywhere I need to go.

[RBW] Stolen Sam Hillborne

2015-09-28 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
Sad news - my daughter-in-law was mugged carrying her nearly new Sam Hillborne
up the steps to her house in Philly. This happened a few weeks ago - she
didn't want to tell me.

Good news - she wasn't hurt.

The kids who stole the bike were in their early teens, but I expect that they
quickly sold it to someone who had some inkling of what he was getting his
hands on, and it was probably parted out. Nevertheless, I thought I'd put out
a couple of pictures, just in case someone sees it on eBay or Craigslist (would
someone who knows how to do a national Craigslist search shoot me back a
how-to?). It's a unique build - Shimano Alfine 11/SON hubs, a vintage Alu-Dur
chainguard, nice dynamo lighting - so it shouldn't be hard to spot. Here are a
couple of pics:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/15837018988/in/album-72157645751093391/

https://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/1583688/in/album-72157645751093391/

I know there's not much hope, but I figured it couldn't hurt to put the word
out.

[RBW] soma san marcos?

2015-09-28 Thread Philip Kim
I was looking through Riv's site and saw they had a demo one. Are they not
being sold anymore?

It seems like a solid bike frame, and I hear it has lighter tubing than the
Hillborne. Maybe a nice substitute for the A Homer Hilsen (in function as a
club ride bike, not geo).

I debated between the Hillborne and the San Marcos and chose the Hillborne,
but wondering if there were any Soma San Marcos owners out there and how
you guys like it.

[RBW] Re: Stolen Sam Hillborne

2015-09-28 Thread Philip Kim
Really sorry to hear that : (, glad she wasn't hurt.

www.searchtempest.com does a national craiglist search as well as ebay
results included. You just type in keyword, and your zip code and does
search nearest you. definitely see if someone was selling the parts out
separately.

I would also alert bike shops in the Philly area, as well as seeing if
there is a facebook Philly marketplace and/or stolen bike page. Philly has
a large biking population so I would imagine someone would have organized
those kinds of pages.

Does she have renter's insurance? Maybe she could get it covered if she
did. She would have to file a police report though.

I'll keep my eyes peeled. Best of luck.

Emotionally okay as well, I think. For a period of a few days she was mad at

reassured her that she did the right thing. Bikes, after all, can be replaced.

www.searchtempest.com does a national craiglist
search as well as ebay results included. You just type in keyword, and your zip
code and does search nearest you. definitely see if someone was selling the
parts out separately.

I would also alert bike shops in the Philly area, as well as seeing if there is
a facebook Philly marketplace and/or stolen bike page. Philly has a large
biking population so I would imagine someone would have organized those kinds
of pages.

Does she have renter's insurance? Maybe she could get it covered if she did.
She would have to file a police report though.

I'll keep my eyes peeled. Best of luck.

Re: [RBW] soma san marcos?

2015-09-28 Thread Tim Gavin
I picked up a San Marcos 51 cm for my girlfriend (1G light blue paint, 650b
wheels). The 650b model has ample tire clearance (38 mm plus fenders) but
the 700c models are a little tighter (35 mm with fenders). The fork is
slightly lower-spec tubing (Tange Infinity), not that you'd notice without
weighing it.

The San Marcos seems a bit more road-oriented than a Hilsen. It has a 6
degree top tube (two tubes in the top sizes) but otherwise its geometry
falls between a Hilsen and a Roadeo. You could also see it as a budget
Roadeo.

My girlfriend's San Marcos is built up as a light tourer, with drop bars
and a front Campee lowrider rack. I'm about to change it from 8 speed STI
to 9 or 10 speed bar ends (depending on which cassette I have lying around).

You're correct that the San Marcos doesn't show up on Riv's frame page
. I assume that a call to RIVHQ
would answer the question of whether they'll continue to stock it. The
Clem fits into the "entry-level Riv" price slot that the SM has occupied.

RE: [RBW] Re: Stolen Sam Hillborne

2015-09-28 Thread Allingham II, Thomas J
It was probably my fault for giving her such a nice bike when she and my son
were living at 50th and Pine. But they don't have a car, and she was riding an
old single speed which was fine for her daily commute to Center City, but not
much good for other uses (at least those that involved much climbing of hills).
She had indoor storage at the school where she teaches, and she brought it
inside (or tried to!) every day when she arrived back home. It's a cautionary
tale.

[RBW] FT/FS: Pari Motos & Nifty Swifties for Soma B line/Lierre/Loup Loup

2015-09-28 Thread islaysteve
I know, in my dreams as far as the Loup Loups go, right? Anyway, P-Ms are
lightly used, less than 400 miles, original extra light event tires, all black.
Nifties have even less mileage but one has slight kink in bead, should not
affect mounting. I'm willing to trade one or both pair, will consider cash for
upgrade if appropriate. No punctures or problems with either pair, I would
just like a 38 tire with a little more substance for mixed road/trail riding.
As far as straight sales, how about $45 for the P-M and $25 for the Nifties,
shipping extra. Please message me, it works as far as I know. Thanks, Steve

Re: [RBW] Re: Stolen Sam Hillborne

2015-09-28 Thread Brian Campbell
Well I am going back quite a ways but when I lived in the same area (44th
Walnut/ 48th Springfield) and my stuff got stolen (cameras/ musical
equipment/bikes/tools etc.) I would go to the pawn shops in the retail area
about 52nd & Pine. I had pretty good luck getting stuff back. There was
also one notorious pawn shop at 13th and Bainbridge (IIRC) that was a known
location for selling stolen goods. The police were not much help
unfortunately (many other larger things to tend to) so I would either show
pictures of myself with the item or police report and pay a "nominal fee"
to get my stuff back.

[RBW] Bags for sale. Some Brooks B17's... Mustache handlebar setup too.

2015-09-28 Thread RJM
I have a few Sackville bags that need a new home...these are just taking up
space and the wife is irritated with me for having "stuff everywhere."

Sackville SaddleSack Small - Olive Pretty good shape with only a few
marks from various rubbing. No holes or any weirdness. Great bag. - $90

Sackville TrunkSack Large - Olive This is in a little worse shape than the
SaddleSack above, but still, no holes or any weirdness. The leather on the
back that fits over one of the Nitto racks is a little "not flat," that's
really the only difference in condition. Still works finejust some
beausage. - $75

Sackville TrunkSack Small - Olive. About the same shape as the SaddleSack
above. Handly little bag for a front rack. - $70

If you need more, just ask and I will put some more up.

Brooks B17 Select - I used this on my Roadeo for only about 300/400 miles
and have switched to something not leathery. It worked fine and was super
comfortable, but I confess I went a little lighter for this bike. This is a
quality saddle with good thick leather. Has one scuff mark on the corner (I
lean my bikes up against building sometimes using the saddle to hold it up
and this is what happens...really, the only blemish) Comes with a box, tin
of goop, saddle cover, and a copy of the brooks newspaper thing shown. -
$120

Brooks B17 Standard black - my first Brooks saddle that I replaced with a
Special model. This one I rode for about 800 miles and it has a scuff mark
on the top. Still has plenty of life in it...comes in a box. $75

I have a mustache handlebar setup, one of the early mustache bars and not
the current ones. This setup has a 8" dirt drop stem, some Soma blinky
lights that Riv used to sell for bar end plugs that probably need
batteries. I haven't turned them on in years. It also has some Dia Compe
non-aero brake levers that I bought from Velo Orange a while back but I
installed some brake cable adjusters in the end, which really help with
adjustment...surprise. The handlebars are wrapped in black cloth tape and

Interestingly, Soma's website show a sale on the pearl blue 59/63cm SM
framesets at about $850 (while supply lasts):

 http://store.somafab.com/sosanmadotof.html

But if you don't mind the tiburon blue color, its available in all sizes at
the regular $930 price:

http://store.somafab.com/sosanmafr20.html

Soma's website explains the changes for 2015:

*CHANGES for 2015:* The 47 thru 57cm (57cm is a new addition) are designed
for 650b wheels and 55-75mm reach road brakes. Max. tire fit: 38mm
The 59cm and 63cm are designed for 700c wheels and 55-75mm reach road
brakes. Max. tire fit: 35mm
The 59 and 63cm have that Rivendell double top tube to restore the
triangulation lost with the tall top tube.

Good Luck!

Nice! Is that a custom-sized larger-than-61 Atlantis? I'm intrigued, because it looks like a 66 or so, but it looks (due to the lugs) like it comes from a period when even the 64's had to be special ordered.  Any great photo, thanks!-Original Message-

It must be one of the last 66's that you could get! I think that big a frame

[RBW] Re: For those of you who don't subscribe to the Compass/BQ mailings ... New Compass Tires Now Available

2015-09-28 Thread iamkeith

Would anyone happen to know how the older "Compass" 26x1.75 tires compare,
in terms of equivalency, to the standard and extra-light casing versions
of the Rat Trap Pass tires? The website doesn't really say, and I haven't
gotten a response to an email inquiry to Jan.

I bought a pair of the standard-casing skinwall variety, to experimentally
replace the Compass tires that I've been very happy with, on my All
Rounder. But I neglected to consider that I might like the current
tires because they were more equivalent to the extra-light version, without
realizing it. Thought I should try to figure it out before I open the
packages and mount them, in case I want to switch.

Thanks

It is my understanding that the Compass 1.75 tires have a casing that is
much more similar to the standard RTP casing. I expect the difference in
width will dwarf the casing difference. In terms of equivalence I think
you picked the right model (the standard RTP).

[RBW] Albastashes on a Cheviot; advice sought!

2015-09-28 Thread Liesl
Hi Friends, need the advice of the collective! My partner Erin has decided
that the beautiful harlequined, paul-thumied, bullmoosed Bosco bars on her
big Cheviot are just not groovin' for her. The problem is that she just
can't sit so upright due to tailbone pain. This tailbone pain is happening
in lots of sitting situations; not unique to biking. Long pelvis; no
cushion; runs in the family. Tried different seats; don't solve the
problem. Anyway, I am trying to help figure out what will work, what parts
we might already have, and what I can do as the household bike mechanic
(okay, that's a laugh, but I persist). some thoughts:

1) she's ridden with noodles, m'bars, and boscos—and the bars she likes the
best are old school mustaches, which she has on her 58 cm QB with a short
stem; maybe 8-10 cm. I have an extra m'bar cockpit with a dirt drop stem
ready to go. but...

2) the 60 cm Cheviot is one lng big-boned gal, as we like to say. I
slipped the m'bar cockpit into the Cheviot's headset, and the length from
the center hole on Brooks saddle to the bar-through-stem point was 2.25
inches longer than the same distance on the QB. We both think that's too
far forward and would be neck-bothering.

3) looks like the Albastache could solve this length issue because,
compared to the original m'bar the grip area is 2" longer and the crooks
are 1" closer according to Riv. Plus it's wider and I think would be
better proportions visually on the Cheviot. I could take apart the m'bar
cockpit, steal the brake levers and dirt drop, add sunrace shifters, and
sell the Bosco cockpit. (She's not so much thinking about albatrosses
because it would likely still be too upright.)

okay, so now for the questions. Do any of you out there

with similar problems? How did you solve them?
have experience moving from original m'bars to albastaches? Do you think
it would solve the 2.25 inch issue?
have albastaches on your Cheviot? Pictures please?
tried mountain bike levers and thumbies on albastaches? Pictures please?

And remember, it takes me about 4-6 times longer to change brake and
derailer cables than you! Maybe!

thanks in advance for your help and stay tuned.

[RBW] Autumn Aspen Ride

2015-09-28 Thread Deacon Patrick
The aspen are still spectacular AND my brain was doing well enough to head out
with the whole family. My wife hiked in with the two littles to play in a creek
and the two older lassies rode with me over hill and through dale and creeks
and aspen.

Wow, is it fantastic being out with family, the breeze sending cascading gold
all round with the dusty autumn loam scents filling the air. Sun played hide
and seek and as my eldest pointed out it just had to come out when we were in
LCG up the steep! Grin.

Not much direct Rivendell content, but I rode my Hunqapillar and it makes this
possible. Photos show thar’s gold in them thar hills!

2015-09-28 Thread Justin August
I would perhaps think about an Albastache + a temporary threadless adapter
+ threadless stem to test fit many lengths. This sounds like a situation
where precision will be appreciated. Or if the Quickbeam setup is ideal,
see what length of typical Technomic you'd need to put the bars in a
similar place.

Re: [RBW] Albastashes on a Cheviot; advice sought!

2015-09-28 Thread Dan McNamara
Hi Liesl,

I have a Cheviot with albastach bars. Traditional setup with road levers but
stem shifters. The stem is a 7cm Tallux.

I really like the setup. Comfortable and not as upright as the Bosco bars.

There are other options out there for minimal drop mustache bars as well. Soma
has one that is made for mountain levers with plenty of room for shifters.

I'll send you a picture of the Soma next to the Albastache bars now on the
Cheviot - just need to dig them out of storage.

[RBW] Re: Albastashes on a Cheviot; advice sought!

2015-09-28 Thread ted
Liesl,

Heads up, I don't think mountain brake levers fit on mustache or albastache
bars.
Also, if you want a short tech delux stem I think Bens Cycle in Milwaukee
carries them down to 5cm. The short dirt drop is 8cm and the long one is
10, so a 5cm would get you 3-5cm (abt. 1 or 2 inch) depending on which dirt
drop you have. Might help some. If you do get a short stem, make sure the
clamp is 26.0 to fit the m or albastache bar.

Hope you are able to sort something out without too much trouble.

[RBW] Re: Albastashes on a Cheviot; advice sought!

2015-09-28 Thread Surlyprof
The Albastache bars do require road levers and a 26mm stem diameter. I had
25.4 Albatross on my Sam and changed it to Albastache. Had to change both
levers and stem. The stem length reduction was 30mm (110 down to 80).
Fits great. I assume that the Bosco might be similar although I have less
experience with them.

Have you considered Bullmoose? I spent a few years using those on my orange

not be bolt upright. Bike had a real solid, confident feel with those bars:

One thing to consider - which will also allow you to keep the current
