VoiceOver saying, "Busy," Formatting in Pages, and recording on the Mac
Hi all, This is my first time posting to this list, and it's nice to have a community of users to discuss things with. Since I have three very distinct areas to discuss, I will divide them up. First, has anyone noticed VoiceOver saying "busy" in certain programs, but when Voiceover is turned off all is fine? It is as though VoiceOver is hanging programs, or causing itself to hang. I have 4gb of RAM, which I thought would be enough. Secondly, I use a BrailleNote 32 cell with Voiceover running Lion 10.7.4, and I wondered if anyone else has noticed how VoiceOver skips lines when reading in Pages and Mail, but oddly, not in text edit or on the Internet. Sometimes it seems as though full screen will help, but since I read on a daily basis in Spanish, it would be nice if there were a way to stop this behavior so I could be confident. Going back to Pages, I am curious if anyone has had success with creating tables in pages in order to put information (such as columns with words and definitions, dates and events, etc)? It doesn't seem to work for me. I can do it in Numbers, but VoiceOver is way too chatty. I would much rather hear it say, "a1, b1, c1, etc" instead of "a1, selected cell, blah blah blah, a1." I am also interested in any free recording solutions available for the Mac. I've heard that Garage Band works, but it seems complicated. I will apologize in advance for all of my questions; I merely had never had anyone to ask these questions of who may actually know. Anytime I call Apple Care, it is a struggle to have them transfer me directly to the Accessibility department instead of some specific product area, and no one ever seems to know what I'm even talking about. Thanks, guys, and take care. Harry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: what Voiceover bugs people want or are hoping will be fixed or squashed in Mountain Lion?
jesús, this is a fascinating discussion. Personally, I use Fred on a daily basis for reading in English, and Paulina when reading in Spanish. Alex is okay, but I prefer a responsive Voice, and I find that I'm able to move about the Mac more quickly using Fred. I have tried Javier for Spanish, but find him less understandable. Anne, thank you very much for your reply. I haven't looked at Apple Vis. is there a website I could go to? I've already learned so much from this list; I didn't know, for example, about VO+cmd+L for moving to next link within an e-mail, etc. Thanks, everyone. You can VO+F2 twice go go to the window chooser menu, select "force quick applications," and arrow over to close. If you are in VMWare Fusion, you can simply command tab between VMWare Fusion and the other Mac applications, as usual. To move within windows, press option+tab, which is the alt+tab equivalent. Re: Time Capsule and backing up
I know that I have an external drive that I bought back at the beginning of November. I successfully backed up to it once, as it was preformatted fo Mac, OSX extended, journaled. I set a password on it, but ever since that single back up, it has enver worked. I have tried reformatting it, and it seems to work, but then almsot halfway into backing up it will say there was an error backing up my files and that I need to repair the drive. It is a 500gb Western Digital Mypassword. Has anyone else had this issue with this particular drive? For a long time I thought it was VoiceOver, since everything would go dim after I would enter the password and I would have to manually quit the drive, etc. I'm just trying to figure out a way to get it repaired so it actually works, but everything seems to be giving errors. Hi, Chris, Interestingly, after reformatting, it no longer asks for a password, so that doesn't appear to be the issue. I'm not sure. I will try a repair again. Re: Really having a hard time trying to save with pages 09 over original file experimenting but no results.
Hi, when using Pages, when you save a file that you want to be in .doc format, the best thing to do is go to export, then choose "Microsoft Word" format. When you open the document back up and make changes to it, you can then save changes to the original by choosing import and then save once you see the dialogue box to name the file (make sure you don't change the file name; you can simply press enter). It will say that a file with the same name already exists, and you can choose to replace it. I actually just figured this out today. Pages defaults to its own format, so after saving files via exploit, when trying to exit Pages, it will say your document has not been saved. You needn't worry, however, as your file has already been exported in to .doc format. That's what I never understood. As a blind person, with a physical board, how are we to get a visual layout of the on-screen board? And yes, the Chess app is very accessible, what what I remember. Tips for Using Track Changes

Simon, Thanks very much. This is a real pity, since track changes is a pretty important feature. What I mean with features is being able to tell things like centered text, different-colored text, tables (inserting them, etc), and I am just guessing here, but I imagine that putting in a table of contents or headers and footers wouldn't work too well, either. Re: Tips for Using Track Changes
Anne, Thank you very much for this Skype resource on Pages training. I may take that up, since I am about to become a certified Spanish/English translator, so things like formatting will be important for the look of the documents. And, as an aside, it sounds like Text Edit is a bit more powerful than I previously thought. I always thought of it as simply Notepad for the Mac, but I didn't realize you could save in different formats, detect shading differences, etc. Thanks again, Harry On Jul 9, 2012, at 9:08 AM, Anne Robertson wrote: > Hello Harry, > > You can find text attributes by pressing VO-t. Nature Sounds App and my External Hard Drive
Hi, everybody, I just had a really quick question. I regularly used, and sometimes still use, the Vision Australia podcasts for learning various aspects of the Mac. He mentions on there that he has a nature sounds app (with instrumental music, fountains, birds, etc). it's extremely pleasant and relaxing, as he demonstrated the way to adjust the Mac volume separate from the VoiceOver volume. My completely frivolous question is, does anyone know of this app or one like it? And on a completely unrelated note, my external hard drive may simply be dead. It was unable to partition because it "could not unmount," and when it does try and copy files it will get part of the way through then say there was an error and the problem may be temporary, but I can try a repair. The repair failed for whatever reason, a few times. The latest error I got was that it could not write to a block of the drive or something like that. I'm really not sure what to do about it. I bought it back in November. I always thought it was just a problem with VoiceOver, but now I suspect it's more a problem with the drive itself. it's a Western Digital 5000gb Mypassport. I did notice my computer tries to about half lock up when I click on the partition tab, though. I thought it was just Voiceover hanging, but of course I couldn't really explain that to the tech support guy. He thought it might be a faulty USB connection. Curious, curious. I was going to try starting my computer up with the STartup disk, as I read on one of the Mac Support pages, but that never seemed to work to get Voiceover running. That is, I would hold down "c" with the CD in, but the computer would go straight to the login screen. I would hold down shift, I think it is, and I'm sure it worked, because it never went to the login screen (that is, VO never came on), but I was also never able to get VO running. I read that if partitioning won't work the normal way that sometimes it will work from the startup disk, as if you were going to partition your hard drive, but instead choosing the external drive. Again, the two subject lines are completely unrelated. I've tried to be as clear and concise as possible; it really is a confusing/frustrating issue. Thanks so much, guys. Re: Firefox on the Mac
I will add that the reason your student has been told to use Firefox with Blackboard is probably because of compatibility with the Blackboard system. Google Chrome was, Re: Firefox on the Mac
Hi, I wasn't aware that Google Chrome worked on the Mac with VoiceOver; I thought only Safari was fully accessible with VoiceOver. It's nice to know that other options are becoming more accessible, at least. I know with JAWS, you could only really count on IE, which I, personally, always hated. Not hearing, "Selected header cell" in Numbers
Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out how I can avoid hearing, "selected header cell," in Numbers when moving from row to row and column to column. I want to make a foreign language glossary for my different translations, but that is extra information that I don't really need. Intermediate verbosity doesn't change it at all, and low verbosity says, "header cell, with nothing else, which may or may not be alright; I've not figured that out yet. And also, since I use a Braille display, I assume there's a good way not to clutter the Braille display with unnecessary information? Thanks so much, all you guys, for the help. it's tremendous and appreciated. Harry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Migration assistant from a PC to a mac
Buenas, Daniela, I never used Migration Assistant, but what I did was to save all of my documents onto an SD card and thumb drive then copy them over. I redownloaded Skype and applications like that. I don't use very many applications otehr than Skype and Kurzweil that weren't already on the mac, so other than putting VMWare Fusion and Windows o nthere, it was painless. Sharing calendars with Google Calendar and iCal
Hi, guys, I am trying to have my girlfriend and I share calendars. She uses Google Calendar on the web, and I use iCal, or would prefer to continue using iCal. What is the best way to have us share calendars? I do have an FTP server which hosts my website, if there were a way to set my calendar up through that so we could share that way. I know traditionally it can be a bit complicated. What I am looking for is a way so I can makes changes in iCal and it shows up in her Google calendar, and she makes changes and it show up on mine. In other words, what I used to be able to do when I worked and the secretary would make changes on mine and her shared Outlook calendar using a Microsoft Exchange server. If this makes sense, does anyone have an idea of how this might be accomplished? Regards, Harry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. iCal: Interesting Voiceover aspect
Hi, guys, I may possibly have figured out the solution to my question I e-mailed a bit earlier, but in the midst of playing around with iCal and Voiceover, I discovered if you turn QuickNav off, you are able to hear the name of each event by arrowing without the VO keys. It seems to, in effect, interact with each event. If you have Quicknav on, however, the issue is that I don't hear the event names, but just the days, so I have no idea of knowing what days actually have events. For those who use one or the other, do you find either Google Calendar or iCal more accessible, or are they about the same? I would like to use iCal, and I just wanted to share that tip for anyone who may not have already known it. Although I don't use Voiceover Activities, my guess is that you could set VoiceOver to automatically turn off Quicknav within iCal only. That way you wouldn't have to bother turning it on and off each time manually. I hope this tip/discovery helps someone else out, and for those with more experience, I look forward to hearing from you on your opinions on Google Calendar vs. iCal. Re: Log-in Password on Macbook Pro
Chris, I changed my login to prompt for a username and password rather than showing a list of accounts. Voiceover speaks fine at this prompt, and this allows you to enter the username, tab, and enter the password. Hints also work if you need them. You are able to switch accounts while logged into one account, if you need to, as well. I regularly use my laptop on a standard account, and have my administrator account for checking for software, installing software, upgrading, etc. I think it is more secure this way. So yes, passwords are always a good idea; they just seem to work a bit better for VoiceOver if you have the OS prompt for a username and password instead of having you choose from a list of accounts. Guys, I have noticed that Mail will put my Gmail messages, which are using iMap, in the drafts folder some times. I go to resend them and it look as though the list has received multiple copies of the same message(s). I'm sorry about this. I'm really not sure why my messages don't simply go ahead and send. Re: Ctrl+Left and Right arrows
Hello, Are you trying to move word-by-word? You can do this with VO+right/left arrow, or just the arrow keys, I believe. To select, simply add the shift key to these commands (shift+VO+left/right arrow). If you only press shift+left/right arrow, you will select by character. iCal Event Creation Problem
Hi, has anyone else had issues creating an event in iCal? I press cmd+N, type the name of the event, press return, and then press cmd+E. I hear, "Edit event," but then nothing. I wonder if there is something wrong with my iCal? Thanks very much for any help. I have a few appointments coming up, and would also like to make some reminders. Re: iCal Event Creation Problem
Something interesting I noticed this evening while putting appointments on my calendar, in case this is benefit to anyone else, is that once an address is entered into the "Location" field, it becomes imbedded text. It appears that this text is then almost an image and is impossible to read word-by-word. So, if anyone needs to verify an address or to read it back, it may be a good idea to slow the speech slightly in order to catch the entire address with phone number, etc. More helpful, in the "URL" field, the website I entered became a hyperlink and is immediately clickable, which is extremely handy. I suppose a work around to the imbedded text issue is to type the address in the "Notes" field. Otherwise, iCal is fabulous and a lot more accessible and useable than I previously thought. YOu will want to go into Voiceover settings with VO+F8, and choose "aNavigation," I think it is. Here, you want to check the checkbox called, "Enable curser wrapping." What this will do is let you wrap around from control to control, which is very useful when you are at the end of a set of controls or items, but wish to just quickly back to the start of the list. Re: Go to page...
Hello, The easiest way is to simply do a search for the tex you're looking for -- usually a few words does the trick. Note that Within there is a limit on how many words/characters are are able to type into the search box, for some reason. The other way is to stop interacting until you hear it say "Page X group," where "X" is the page you're currently on. You can then arrow through the pages until you find the one you need and interact with the page group and the body text. As far as I am aware, there is no direct shortcut to go to a particular page, but you could, of course, create a shortcut key for such a command if it does indeed exist in the menus. I had a quick look and didn't see anything, at any rate. And also, since, as Anne recently mentioned to me, all of the color/font change commands work in Text Edit, you could also copy the text over into Text Edit and look for bolded text, italic text, or a font color change, etc. if that is helpful or quick. However, if you're looking for a particular heading or section, usually the quickest and most simple way is to simply type those words into the search field. Fonts in Pages and TEmplates with placeholder text in Pages and Numbers
Hi, everyone, I am in the process of exploring Pages and getting ready for my internship, so I want to be comfortable changing fonts in Pages as needed. I am trying now to change to Times New Roman. I type some text and select it, although this is probably not even necessary, and I then press command+T. There is a search box where I could type in a font name, but instead I go over to font family and choose "All fonts." I then go down in the list of provided fonts until I find "Times new Roman." I stop interacting, adjust the size of the font, and then press the close button. I check the font, and it says, "Times," with the correct point size. It does not say "Times new Roman," and from what I am reading on the Internet, these two are different. I have also seen "Times Roman." It is my goal to become as proficient with Pages as possible so I can confidently move about. Although not all things are probably doable at this point, much more is possible than I previously thought. I also understand that it is possible to use the templates with the placeholder text. I have found in the past that Pages and Numbers both tend to select the wrong template at times. There is one particular template, in particular, that Numbers never selects. I think it is the grade book template, if I remember right. So anyway, I am off to explore more about Pages; in the meantime, however, I wanted to see if anyone else was familiar with these points. Text Expander from Smile Software
Hi, guys, I would be very surprised if there isn't at least one member of this list who doesn't already use this application, but I just heard about it tonight on a podcast, and just now downloaded the free trial (the full version may be purchased for $35.00). It is called Text Expander, and it allows you to assign abbreviations to type out your e-mail address, your e-mail signature, your home address, or even entire paragraphs of text. If I had text expander running, for example, I could type, "You may contact me at ;em if you have any questions." Then, the ";em" (without the quotes) would become my e-mail address. It is fully accessible, and in fact mentions enabling universal access at the outset. I will warn that it is a bit pesky at first, at least with the trial, as it wants yo to purchase, then sign up for the news letter, etc. but it truly does seem like a fantastic application. Again, it is $35.00 and runs on the Mac OS. A feature which seems very useful, but which I have yet to try, is an ability to fill in custom fields when writing a reply,. The example they give is for a response to a donation to a company, where the responder wishes to thank the donor and tell ways in which his or her specific dollar amount will be used. I can definitely see myself using it when filling out online forms which constantly ask for name, e-mail, home address, telephone, cell, etc. The website is www.smilesoftware.com/textexpander. I haven't looked at any of the other applications on the site yet, and I was very surprised to find this worked as well as it does and is as accessible as it is. So far, it is completely useable. The only interesting point is that the test areas in the tutorial, where you go to set up the various snippets, as it calls the abbreviations for text to be inserted, is that the test area to try the abbreviations out do not work, at least when I tried it. Again, if you have any questions feel free to ask. I have just started using it, as of about ten minutes ago, but it truly seems fantastic. For those with some sight, visuals such as images may also be inserted. Take care. Is anyone else looking forward to seeing how the dictation feature may or may not work so well in Mountain Lion? I'm always unsure of dictation programs and things of that sort. Take care, Harry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. William, I, too, have noticed the odd speech issue with the voices. When reading in Spanish, the voice will go from a low pitch to a high pitch sometimes with no explanation. If I install Mountain Lion without backing up my system, will I lose all my data? It's also a good idea to run Software Update to make certain you have the most current updates for Lion. Now, once you've done this, just purchase Mountain Lion. It will download and your system will re-boot. You may have to turn on VO when your system restarts, but you will then have speech through the remainder of the installation process. VMWare Fusion Not Supported Under Mountain Lion
Hi, guys, Apparently, VMWare Fusion is not supported under Mountain Lion. I got an error message saying that I could not open the application because it was not supported on "this type of Mac," whatever that means. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, a solution would be gratefully appreciated, as I start classes this fall and need access to Kurzweil. That's probably true. Often, many of us don't want to read the manual, myself included, because we're afraid it'll take too much time. Re: synth that makes vo snappier?
I use Fred, although you said you don't care for the voices included with VO. I find it is more responsive than Alex. Also, I am updating my computer right now, and there are several voice updates -- Paulina is one, but I don't know about Alex, since I don't use him. For Paulina, it mentioned improved clarity and pronunciation; I'm not sure about responsiveness. i will let you know once it all finishes downloading. Re: Sound
I noticed a similar problem upon installing Lion when it first came out. it was a big problem for me every time I switched from headphones back to regular speakers. Apple came out with an update that addressed the issue, and, with the exception of a couple of times since, I have never had an issue with this again. It has happened not at all yet under Mountain Lion. Cheers, Harry On Jul 25, 2012, at 6:44 PM, Craig J Dunlop wrote: > I just installed mountain lion on my MBP. Re: synth that makes vo snappier?
Hi, I updated using software update, which now takes you to the App Store instead of the software update dialog, FYI. I haven't noticed any difference in clarity of Paulina, but I also haven't been using it with headphones, and I haven't read any spanish with it yet; I've merely tested it by moving around on my desktop with my English document names, which, of course, is not the best way to test it's pronunciation improvements. :) Once I do, however, I will let you know. Re: Fonts in Pages and TEmplates with placeholder text in Pages and Numbers
Anne, Thanks so much. It turns out that tab is tremendously helpful in moving about in Pages. In fact, for the first time, I've set up an activity particularly for Pages so that Quick Nav will be turned off at the outset, so I don't have to worry about it, but if I need it I can still activate it with the left and right arrows together. Bug when expanding mail messages
I just noticed that when expanding mail messages with VO-space bar, sometimes the focus is in the wrong place, apparently, and it opens up the "sort by menu" where you are able to sort by attachments, date, from, etc. So far, my only complaint is that they took the expand mail messages keystroke away for VoiceOver; I find this new one to be a bit awkward. Other than that, it's really pretty nice. Harry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. hello, I use Paulina, the Spanish voice, which they also claimed had speech improvements, and I haven't noticed any difference one way or the other. Hi, Tim, i didn't notice a difference with the slider set to 100 percent, but what I did was to go into mail and say "expand all conversations," and at the moment that is making life easier. Numbers
Hello, guys, Is anyone familiar with Numbers and using the menus, checkboxes, etc. features? I would like to create an attendance tracker to practice skills in Numbers, but I just now looked at the template for an employee schedule, and the menu options that are placed into the cells are all dimmed, and although it gives times inside of those menus (times the employee signed in/out, for example), VoiceOver does not read this information. Should I be going about this type of thing another way? I want to be able to create professional presentations using Numbers that will give me the information I need about my budget, or my upcoming internship schedule, and that kind of thing, but I want to have it be in a way that is accessible when using VoiceOver, obviously. Right now I'm trying to create the attendance tracker with information modeled off the office.com website using Excel 2003. I want to learn how to do these various things because Numbers/Excel has always been a weak area of mine. How, for example, do you rename a table? I would appreciate any thoughts from a confident Numbers user. Best regards, Harry -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. in Pages
Do you happen to have any suggestions for using headers and footers in Pages with regards to Quick Nav? As I play with business letter templates, I am noticin you have to select each word/phrase to of the placeholder text you want replaced and write in your repalcement, which works fine. The issue comes when trying to move to the header and footers to enter information. You seem to need quick nav for this, but then I am unable to edit anything in the header or footer areas. I just wondered if you had any thoughts? I have gotten used to Quick nav, but I may turn it of and go about without using it, since it is really less useful than I always thought it was. Alex, apparently Mail cut off most of the subject line, but this was supposed to be the title of my reply -- Cons of using Quick Nav in Pages -- as opposed to the cons of Quick Nav in general. Trick for Expanding Messages in Mail
I thin this has been mentioned by another/or others, but now that I have stopped using Quick Nav, I am noticing only advantages. I am able to right arrow to expand a list of messages in mail and left arrow to collapse them. I suppose it is still necessary to turn on Quick Nav to navigate by words, characters, tables, etc. Of course, within websites, one could simply use VO+U to access the tables, forms, etc. I often switch to characters in order to read the serial number under "About This Mac." Re: Bug when expanding mail messages
I discovered the most reliable way is to not use quick nav, but to rather press right arrow by itself to expand messages, and left arrow by itself to collapse messages. VO blackslash for me does not work. Re: Numbers
Hi Anne, I've been going to the layout area and interacting with it, where I can see the tables I've added there. When that didn't seem to work, however, I went to the item chooser, to the sheets table, interacted, and brought the mouse over so I could move about. That worked. Is there a quicker way to get to the sheets table, however? With regards to the menus, it's strange. I'm able to put items in the menus, but it never tells me which is selected; it only says "menu cell," or something like that. That was back in Lion when I tried it, so I didn't know if anyone knew if accessibility had improved or not. And it really does seem when things aren't working with Voiceover that the solution is more often than not to move the mouse to a particular spot and manipulate it that way. Re: check next appointment in Calendar?
Hi Alex, Regardless of the view you are in (daily, weekly, monthly), you can press tab to move between existing appointments. The year view seems to be a bit different, but I typically use the month view, so I can't say how the year view functions. I have never experienced needing to press tab multiple times to move between appointments; perhaps you have your calendar setup in a different way?
