Re: Coronavirus impact: Apple moves WWDC to online format, citing 'current health situation' | Fox News

2020-03-14 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Simon,

I live in one of the worst affected departments in France and the hospital
where I was recently treated for cancer is where the first local case was
diagnosed. My husband is an independent English teacher and already some of his
classes have been cancelled. It’s a very weird situation to be living through.
Cheers,

Anne

Hello Simon,

Well, things are much worse here now. All restaurants, bars, cafés, cinemas and
theatres are closed as of midnight last night. Only essential travel is
permitted. However the local elections are going ahead. We are certainly living

Re: Bug in new version of Numbers on OS X

2020-04-12 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Phil,

I haven’t much in the way of spreadsheets on my computer so I asked my husband
to test the latest Numbers on his, which is a recent MacBook Pro running
Catalina. For him, VoiceOver will read column headers for the first 22 columns,
and row headers for the first 44 rows. This is true both for navigating using
the VO keys, and VO-Shift-t.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: commands for navigating the web

2020-05-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Shirley,
You open the web rotor by pressing VO-u. The rotor is like a series of
drop-down menus, each listing all the items of a particular type such as links,
headings, form controls etc.
To find commands, press VO-h-h and you’ll have the full list of VoiceOver
commands. If you want to find commands relating to links, just type the word
link and the list will shrink to show only commands with the word link in them.
Some commands have no shortcut assigned to them, but you can always add one
using one of the commanders.
You should explore the VoiceOver Utility as it has lots of settings for you to
customise your Mac.
Cheers,

Anne

Re: How do I check the time on the mac?

2020-05-22 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Shirley,

With the keyboard commander turned on, Option-t gives you the time. In
VoiceOver Utility, in the Commanders category, you can choose whether to use
the right or left Option key. However, on a laptop, the only sensible choice is
the righthand Option key since there is no Control key on that side so the
Option key can’t really be used for the VoiceOver keys.
VO-Shift-k toggles the keyboard commander on and off.
Cheers,

Anne

Re: Pages and custom template

2020-05-23 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Leo,
In Pages Preferences, I think you have to click on Change template and reselect
your preferred one then press Choose. Close Preferences and your chosen
template should be shown. Close the window and quit Pages, then reopen Pages
and all should be well.
This works for me under Mojave, and for my husband under Catalina.
Cheers,

Anne

Hello Leo,
When you open Pages, you shouldn’t have to press anything. The application
should open with a blank template. Cmd-n is the command to show the Template
Chooser.

Hello Ian,
After setting the shortcut, did you check that it showed up in the table? When
setting a shortcut in the Keyboard Commander, you simply press the appropriate

Re: This blind Apple engineer is transforming the tech world at only 22

2016-07-11 Thread Anne Robertson
I grew up in England and between the ages of 7 and 17, attended schools for the
blind where maths was taught, but the only science was biology, which didn’t
interest me at the time. I would have preferred to learn physics.
I finished my secondary education in a mainstream school and specialised in
languages. I studied French at university, but then I went into computer
programming.
The tool that allowed me to work on an equal footing with my sighted colleagues
was the optacon. I was able to read the terminal screen and printout. I
programmed the Apple ii in hexadecimal and read all the manuals using the
optacon.
I didn’t use speech on a computer until we got a Mac, a 2SI, during the 90s and
I purchased OutSpoken.
It never occurred to me that I might not be able to get a job as a blind person
once the optacon became available to me.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: a bug in Voice Over, Writing text when creating new folders. Please confirm.

2016-08-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Kawal,

You could try reinitialising the PRAM. To do this, first shut down your
computer. Then, hold down the following four keys: Command, Option, letter p
and letter r. Press the Power key and let it go, but keep holding down the four
keys until you’ve heard the startup chime at least three times. Then, let go of
the keys and the computer will boot as normal.
However, it’s strange that you’re having the same problem on both your
computers. I’ve never experienced this.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: renaming or relabeling apps on the home screen

2016-08-08 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Jenine,

Double-tap and hold with two fingers. You’ll hear a series of clangs, after
which you can type in a new label. Click the Done button and VoiceOver will
read the new name.
Interestingly, in the App Switcher, VO will read the new name, but when you
close the app, it will be announced with its original name.

Cheers,

Anne

Audible.com new library view

2016-08-14 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

Audible has changed its library view and it’s horrible! You have to hover the
mouse over the book’s cover image and click to get the download options.
Sometimes, the mouse simply will not come to the VoiceOver cursor and the whole
thing is very hit and miss.
I’ve chatted with someone at Audible and he’s going to pass my comments on to
the web designers.
We’ll just have to wait and see.

Cheers,

Anne

Have you been there in the past few days? It really has changed completely, and
that has nothing to do with the operating system used.

Re: text navigation help

2016-08-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Here is a full list of the commands:
Right one character - Right Arrow;

Left one character - Left Arrow;

Right one word - Option-Right Arrow;

Left one word - Option-Left Arrow;

Go to the end of the line - Cmd-Right Arrow;

Go to the beginning of the line - Cmd-Left Arrow;

Go to previous line - Up Arrow;

Go to next line - Down Arrow;

Go to the beginning of the paragraph - Option-Up Arrow;

Go to the end of the paragraph - Option-Down Arrow;

Go to the beginning of the document - Cmd-Up Arrow;

Go to the end of the document - Cmd-Down Arrow.

Add the Shift key to any of these commands to select the text.

Pressing the Return key signals the end of a paragraph, but you can use a line
break (Ctrl-Return) to go to the next line while still in the same paragraph.
In Pages, Cmd-FN-Return on a laptop, or Cmd-Enter on an extended keyboard,
forces a page break.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Moving by page in Text Edit/Pages/etc?

2016-08-25 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

In TextEdit, you need to adjust the window to the page for VO-Page Down to
work. The command to change this is Cmd-Shift-w.

In Pages and in TextEdit, you have to be interacting with the text area for the
Page Down command to work.

The Page Down key only has a visual effect, so it’s actually useless for us.

The VO-Page Down command works for me in both Pages and TextEdit, but not in
Preview.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Alex,

Wrap to Page does indeed show what the document would look like if printed, and
allows VO users to find the page breaks.

Re: Moving by page in Text Edit/Pages/etc?

2016-08-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Donna,

The commands you’re thinking about are Go to first or last visible item and Go
to First or Last Item. These were switched round in El Capitan. To me, this
makes sense for a VO user who normally doesn’t care what’s visible or not. So
now, VO-Home goes to first item and not first visible item.
I use VO-Home and VO-End a lot to save time.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: lables compatible in pages?

2016-09-07 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Zoe,

There is no label template provided in Pages, but you could create your own if
you know the dimensions of the labels and the sheet they are on.
You would need to create a template with text boxes of the appropriate size and
in the correct positions.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: the mystery is solved! (was Another Annoying issue in mail)

2012-02-28 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Steve,

With Mail in classic view and having got rid of the preview pane, the messages
appear as a list on the right-hand side of the screen, with the mailboxes as a
list on the left.

In Conversation view, you expand a thread by pressing right arrow and all the
messages in that thread appear below the first one. Left arrow collapses the
thread again.

To open a message you press Return and the message is read automatically. To
close a message, you press Cmd-w since opened messages appear each in their own
window.

If a message has been read, VO says nothingm, but it does say "Unread",
"Message was forwarded", etc.

This way of viewing mail could be what you're looking for.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Questions about Prismo

2012-03-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chris,

I use Prizmo very successfully on my iPhone 4, but it's extremely difficult to
get good results from a computer screen.

I get really good results from books and other printed materials.

I have no light perception so use the Light Detector app to check that there is
sufficient light for Prizmo to work.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Questions about Prismo

2012-03-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Paul,

The Light Detector app is just called Light Detector and you just launch it and
it plays a tone which rises with the light level.

Here are the instructions for Prizmo that Esther posted a little while ago.

Cheers,

Anne

One of the features that contributes to Prizmo's increased effectiveness for
visually impaired users is the ability to take pictures with speech control, by
saying, "Take Picture", which reduces the likelihood of a blurred image due to
moving the phone when you double or split tap a button to take a picture. You
turn this feature on in the Settings menu by double tapping the "Settings"
button in the top right corner of the main Prizmo screen. Flick right to the
"General Settings" button under the "Settings" heading and double tap. On the
"General Settings" screen, flick right past the "Capture" heading and set the
"Alignment Grid" to "Switch button, off", then set the "Speech Control" to
"Switch button, on". I believe both switches are turned on by default, but it
is several months since I configured Prizmo. I'm not sure whether turning off
the "Alignment Grid" is necessary, but you certainly don't need it to be
displayed, since you can't see it while using the camera. Once you have checked
that these settings are in place, double tap the "Settings, back button" in the
top left corner to return to the "Settings" screen, then double tap the "Done"
button in the top right corner to return to the main Prizmo screen.

The main Prizmo screen has a list of types of documents to scan and OCR,
followed by a "Documents" button at the bottom of the screen that are results
you want to store in the app. In general, you will choose to double tap "Text"
(the first listed entry).

The app works in 3 stages, which are indicated by the 3 buttons at the bottom
of the the next ("Photo") screen: (1) Source (obtaining the image using the
Camera -- can also use previous images from your photo album taken outside the
app), (2) Image (options to apply corrections to image before OCR -- generally
requires vision to perform actions, such as cropping to only include the part
of the image that contains text or correct for distorted pictures because you
didn't hold the iPhone flat), and (3) OCR (perform the OCR with an option to
choose the language to improve the OCR), then display the results for editing,
copying, etc. or saving in the app's stored "Documents". You can navigate
through the app without ever using these buttons, just by double tapping the
"Next" button in the top right corner of the screen to move through each stage,
and that's probably the easiest way to use the app when you get started,
especially if you only work with documents in English. However, if you want to
OCR a document in a different language, you can improve your results by double
tapping the "OCR" button (third or three at the bottom right corner of the
screen) and then flicking left to the language button (e.g., "English") in the
row of option buttons for that screen, and double tapping. You'll be able to
double tap another language from the list of 10 available languages. (Note that
you will not hear "selected" announced beside the currently selected language
in the list, but you can only exit the "Language" menu by either double tapping
a new language selection or by double tapping the "Cancel" button in the top
right corner. Once you have changed the language (e.g., to French) and
returned to the "Photo" screen with the OCR button set, you should hear the new
language, "French", announced if you flick left to that button.) Setting the
OCR language before applying the "next" button improves the recognition of
words with accented characters -- otherwise I may get a "6" for an "e" with
acute accent, and other such examples.

Here's the sequence for the iPhone 4, assuming that you have configured the
"Settings" menu as outlined earlier. It is very helpful to use the $0.99
"Light Detector" app to check lighting conditions and also get a sense of the
optimal centering and height of the iPhone above the page before you use
Prizmo. (You can hear when the "Light Detector" signal is loudest if you move

This only gives a rough sense of where to position the phone when you use

Re: a guide on pages

2012-03-26 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Luke,

There is no guide on how to use Pages from a VO perspective. My husband and I
have put together a course on Pages which we offer via Skype so that we can use
screen sharing.

The course costs €25 per unit and there are 5 units.

Not everyone wants all the units, it all depends on what people need to do with
Pages.

In any case, you need a thorough knowledge of VO to cope with Pages as it is
somewhat idiocyncratic.

Cheers,

Anne

I don't know what you mean about it overwriting files, but it does save
automatically as you work. However, if you close a file with Cmd-w you will get
a dialogue asking whether you want to save your changes or not. You still have
to quit the application with Cmd-q as it does not quit automatically when it
has no windows open.

The first thing that comes to mind is your settings in VoiceOver Utility. In
the Navigation category, Initial position of VoiceOver cursor should be
Keyboard focused item.

You talk about opening a file, but it sounds as though you're opening a folder
containing files. Each file type is associated with a default application. So,
RTF files automatically open with TextEdit.

Re: Text edit and Lion

Hello Veronica,

Quite a lot has changed from Snow Leopard to Lion. One of the most annoying is
that, by default, windows left open are not closed when you quit an
application. You can change this behaviour in System Preferences. Go to the
General pane and look for the check box labelled Restore windows when quitting
and re-opening apps and uncheck it. A quick way to find this is to use the Item
Chooser (VO-i) and type res to select only phrases containing that string.
Press Return to have VO go to the selected item.

It's best to start from the document rather than the application. Find your

However, before trying that, open System Preferences and go to the General pane

In Pages, you set the type of bullets you want for your bulleted list in the

I have short cuts for several useful service commands which make using the

Hello Steve,

I'm so tired of repeating myself, but I use Pages all the time in my capacity
as a professional translator. Any tables I find in a document I copy into
Numbers so that I keep the formatting correct. I manipulate the table in
Numbers, then copy it back into Pages. It doesn't take long and works fine.

Like any decent office suite, iWork takes time to learn and people just haven't
got the patience.

Yes, there are problems with the iWork suite. A group of VO commands doesn't
function such as looking for next colour change so I compensate for this by
using TextEdit to read my source document, but I have no trouble formatting in
Pages.

I do think it's about time Apple brought out a new version of iWork. The
current one is 3 years old and I'm afraid when they do, it's going to be more
like the IOS version but I'll just have to wait and see.

Anyway, to finish with iWork for the Mac, Keynote is also perfectly manageable
for a totally blind person.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Track pads

2012-04-14 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marc,

If you buy a Mac laptop, you'll have a built-in trackpad, but if you buy a
desktop Mac, you'll have the option of buying the Magic Trackpad instead of, or
as well as, a mouse. There are no other brands of trackpad that work with a mac.

As for it's limitations, there are a number of navigation commands already
mapped to gestures on the trackpad, but you can add the VO commands you use
most frequently and map them to unused gestures.

It isn't exactly like the iPhone because Mac OS X isn't IOS 5. So, on the Mac,
you have gestures for interacting and stopping the interaction, for instance.

None of this will make sense to you until you have a Mac and learn about the OS.

Using the trackpad with VoiceOver means turning on the trackpad commander which
renders the trackpad inoperable for moving the mouse. However, a simple gesture
turns the trackpad commander off and on, so getting sighted help to fix a
problem is still possible.

I can't give you any comparisons with Windows and its various screen readers as
I've never used Windows.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: VoiceOver practice mode

2012-04-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Marc,

To enter Keyboard Help, as it is called, press VO-k and press Escape to leave
it.

When in this mode, VoiceOver will identify the keys as you press them, and if
you press a VO command, it will tell you what it does.

This mode is very useful if you think you remember a command but you don't want
to make a mistake.

Do you know about VO-h-h which gives you the full list of VO commands divided
into categories?

Cheers,

Anne

Re: How do you put the name to a pages document in IOS

2012-04-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Daniela,

Here's how to rename a Pages document on an iPhone, I assume it works the same
way with an iPad. Warning: you need a steady hand.

You have to select Documents, then in the list of documents, the one you've
just created will be called something like Blank, probably followed by a
number. Place one finger on the one you wish to rename, toggle VoiceOver off,
double-tap with that one finger, then toggle VoiceOver back on again. You'll be
in an edit field which is the file name. Type the new name, then tap Done.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Disabling the preview pane in Lion mail

2012-04-15 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Franc,

First of all, you need to be in classic view to do this. You also need to have
the Trackpad Commander turned off.

Go to the horizontal splitter above the body of the message using the VO keys,
then bring the mouse (VO-Cmd-F5) and double click using either the trackpad or
the mouse, depending on what kind of computer you have. If you move the mouse
pointer even slightly before the double click, it won't work.

Cheers,

Anne

Numbers, a useful tip

2012-04-16 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Numbers users,

Here's a tip for moving quickly up or down a large table in Numbers.

Bring the mouse to the VO cursor (VO-Cmd-F5) and make sure that Trackpad
Commander is off.

To go down the table, swipe up the trackpad with two fingers then click with
it. Bring the VO cursor to the mouse (VO-Shift-F5).

To move up the table, swipe down with two fingers.

I always find myself in the column I started in, so you can choose which column
to follow.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Mail, unread versus read messages.

Hello Veronica,

If you are not interacting with the messages table and just navigating up and
down with the arrow keys, VO should announce unread, reply was sent, message
was forwarded, and so on, but not "Read". However, if you interact with the
messages table, the status column will say "Blank" if the message has been read.

Hello Veronica,

It sounds as though the preview pane is still there and the messages are being
opened as you arrow down through them.

How do you read your messages? I read mine by pressing Return, then I close
them with Cmd-w. If VO-j takes you to the body of the messages, then the
preview pane is still there.

Yes, VO can announce headers. In VoiceOver Utility, Verbosity, announcements,
check the Speak header when navigating across a table row check box.

When navigating along a row, you'll hear the column number, the contents of the
cell and then the header name. You can get both cell coordinates by pressing
VO-Shift-t.

Re: web navigation?

2012-04-30 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Alex,

All the VO commands are shown in the commands menus which you get to by
pressing VO-h-h.

When in a text area, you need to interact for VO commands to work. However,
usually, you can navigate using just the arrow keys. As for editing text, the
insertion point is always between two characters, so if you're navigating to
the right, the insertion point is immediately after the last thing VoiceOver
spoke. If you're navigating to the left, it's before the last thing VO said. If
you press VO-F4, VO will tell you exactly where the insertion point is.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: Clicking Column Headers?

2012-05-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Steve,

To sort a column, just interact sufficiently to be able to place the VO cursor
on your chosen column and use the VO sort command (VO-vertical line) On my
British keyboard, this is shift on the rightmost key on the home row, the key
in the angle of the Return key. The first time you issue this command it will
sort up the way, and the second time, it sorts down the way.

Cheers,

Anne

Maybe if you create an ativity it could be done. I've never bothered because I
have a keyboard commander shortcut and a Quick Nav shortcut to switch modes. I
usually use groups, but for reading a big chunk of a page, I use DOM.

I also use the Safari Reader for reading articles.

Safari Reader is a normal part of Safari. You press Cmd-Shift-r, wait a second

Re: Advice on switching from PC

Hello Will,

I'm not a zoom user, but my husband sometimes uses it and he also teaches
low-vision Mac users. He says that there is a random bug that causes focus to
jump to one edge of the screen for no apparent reason. Apple is aware of it but
so far, no fix is forthcoming.

However, many people manage fine, despite this bug. And since you won't be
using VoiceOver, you'll be able to use Office for Mac as well as iWork.

Re: reading in files or web pages

2012-05-03 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Stacey,

The first thing you have to remember when reading a text file is to interact
with the text, otherwise, the VO commands won't work.

To read from top of document, VO-b;
To read from current position, VO-a;
Read next character, VO-shift-Right Arrow;
Read previous character, VO-shift-Left Arrow;
Read next word, VO-Right Arrow;
Read previous word, VO-Left Arrow;
Read line, VO-l;
Read next line, VO-Down Arrow;
Read previous line, VO-Up Arrow;
Read sentence, VO-s;
Read next sentence, VO-Command-Page Down;
Read previous sentence, VO-Command-Page Up;
Read paragraph, VO-p;
Read next paragraph, VO-Shift-Home;
Read previous paragraph, VO-Shift-End.

On a laptop, Home = FN-Left Arrow;
End = FN-Right Arrow;
Page up = FN-Up Arrow;
Page down = FN-Down Arrow.

All this information can be found by pressing VO-h-h and looking in the Text
menu. It's worth reading through the VO commands just to be aware of what's
available.

Reading Web pages can be tricky, depending on how they are written. In DOM
mode, you can only navigate horizontally, but VO-b and VO-a work fine. You can
also navigate by headers, links, visited links, form controls and more.

Creating keyboard shortcuts broken

2012-05-17 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

In OS X 10.7.3 and OS X 10.7.4, it seems that VO users can no longer create
shortcuts for Services or other predefined categories in System Preferences. We
can still create shortcuts for commands in specific applications.

Since 10.7.3, there has been an Add button next to the command name but VO
users can't click it. I tried VO-Space, VO-Shift-Space, Space Bar alone,
Return, and bringing the mouse, turning off VO, and clicking with the trackpad,
but nothing worked.

Has anyone else had this trouble? I've already reported it to Accessibility.

Re: Creating keyboard shortcuts broken

Hello Jonathan,

No, that does not solve my problem. I interact with the second column, and if
there is already a shortcut assigned, I can change it. However, if there is no
shortcut assigned, the Add button does nothing. This is broken in OS x 10.7.3
and 10.7.4. Before that, there was no Add button, just an editable field.

I reported the problem to Accessibility, but have had no reply.

Re: Kapten GPS

2012-05-24 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Mike,

I've used this app and the price you see is for one month. I think the lifetime
price is about ten times the monthly price.

The app is good for planning routes that include both walking and using public
transport, but I don't find it to be as good as Navigon for giving turn-by-turn
directions at the right time.

I haven't bothered with it for a year or so. Also, it hasn't been updated since
November 2010 which is a bit disturbing.

I like the combination of Navigon and Ariadne GPS. Navigon runs happily in the
background with Ariadne as the current app.

On older laptops, there is no Option key on the right. This is the case on my

Inability to add shortcut in System Preferences

2012-06-01 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello everyone,

Here's the reply I got from Accessibility about my problem adding shortcuts for
predefined items in System Preferences.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello,

Thank you for your email. We appreciate the feedback and wanted to let you know
that Apple is currently investigating this issue. Unfortunately we cannot
comment on when it may be resolved.

Apple Accessibility

Hello,

There appears to be a major bug in OS X 10.7.3 and OS X 10.7.4. VoiceOver users
cannot create keyboard shortcuts, other than for specific applications, in
System Preferences.

I really hope that you can help with this one.

Cheers,

Anne Robertson

To reproduce this bug, Turn VoiceOver on and open System Preferences.
Go to the Keyboard pane and select Keyboard Shortcuts.
Select a category in the first table, then navigate to the second table and
interact with it.
Choose a command for which you wish to create a shortcut (it must be one that
doesn't have a shortcut already).
For this purpose, I've chosen from the Services category, Open Selected File in
TextEdit.
Interact with the second column which contains the command name, the add
shortcut button, and a text field.
Whether the first column check box is checked or not, the command name and text
field in the second column are dimmed.
Try clicking the button. I tried VO-space, Space on its own, VO-Shift-Space,
Return, bringing the mouse, turning off VO and double-clicking with the
trackpad, all to no avail.

Re: pages

2012-06-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Luke,

To change the font in a Pages document, highlight the whole document (Cmd-a)
then press Cmd-t to open the Fonts pallet and select the one you want. Cmd-t
will hide it again.

If you want to change the font for a portion of the text, just highlight that
portion and do as before.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: pages

2012-06-02 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Luke,

After opening the Font window, press VO-Down Arrow twice to find the row of
headings. You'll land first on Collection which is a table containing choices
of font collections such as English and Favorites.

To the right is Family. This is where you select the font such as Calibri or
Times or whatever you like.

To the right again is Typeface which only contains information if the chosen
font has variations such as italic or bold.

To the right again is Size. Here there is an edit field in which you can just
type a number such as 12 for 12-point. Alternatively, you can select the size
from the table below.

You then just press Cmd-t to hide the Font window and press an arrow key to
unhighlight the text.

In Pages, before trying to change anything, you need to make sure that the
focus is actually on the text. To do this, interact with the text then bring
the mouse and press VO-Shift-Space bar.

Cheers,

Anne

Hello Walter,

I think I counted 17 types of résumé templates in Pages! I don't know about
podcasts on Pages but I doubt it.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: VO is unable to read a book in PDF format

2012-06-05 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Rahul,

If the book is indeed just images, then ABBYY FineReader Express for Mac will
do the OCR for you. You can buy it from the Mac App Store. I think it costs
around $80.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: OCR for iPhone 4s or iPad

2012-06-10 Thread Anne Robertson
Most people find Prizmo to be the best OCR app for iPhone. Here is a link to
the Prizmo guide on Applevis:

I suspect it works best on an iPhone since it has a better camera than other
IOS devices.

Anne

Not exactly. Once Prizmo is set up correctly, you select Text, take the picture
of the page, tap Use and wait for the OCR to be completed.

It takes some practice to get the knack.

Anne

Hello Lisette,

I have an iPhone 4 and have been using Prizmo successfully in both English and
French for over a year now. I'm totally blind, no light perception, and yet it
still works for me, often at the first attempt!

Cheers,

Anne

Re: highlighting text in pages?

2012-06-18 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Maria,

To highlight the passages in Pages, you could select the section and change the
colour. Press Cmd-Shift-c to open the colour window where you can choose your
colour. The same command closes it again.

Cheers,

Anne
