Re: Sending a card to multiple addresses

2014-12-15 Thread Andrew Lamanche
just to add to what Alex has said, you don't have to add cards to a group
individually. You can interact with the table of contacts and use the select
method. Use vo+up or down arrow to go through the list of your contacts. Once
you've found the one you want to add to group, press vo+command+enter key to
select it or deselect it. Voiceover will tell you how many selections you have
each time you add another contact. This is a good method because in this way
you can select non-consecutive contacts. Once you've selected all the cards
you want, press vo+shift+m to call up contextual menu and choose add to group.
which you will have previously created.

Hope this helps.

Re: Saga trying to reinstall Yosemtie

2014-12-15 Thread Cheryl Homiak
I am not sure how old your iMac is or whether or not this would be a factor,
but if I use cmd-r at restart and take the steps to reinstall, it is Yosemite
that is indeed shown as the install that will be done, not Mavericks. So I
don't think the problem is that Apple has failed to allow a Yosemite install
but unfortunately I don't know what the problem may have been when you
attempted this.

Hello Sarai,

If you need to use Pages seriously, you should take a course in how to use it.
I don’t know whether anyone else offers this, but my husband and I teach a

making the whole course cost €125.

If you’re interested, e-mail me at:

RE: yosemite advice

2014-12-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jeff,

During the installation process, depending upon many factors, VoiceOver may not
place focus at the top/beginning of some dialog boxes. Take your time and read
each dialog box carefully.

One dialog box that you will definitely want to pay particular attention to is
the one that offers you the opportunity to encrypt your hard drive using file
vault. If memory serves, the default choice for this is Yes.

Good Luck and Enjoy,

Mark

Also, I know it asks you to setup iCloud drive. I’ve never used iCloud for

RE: Hiding the Gmail all folder

2014-12-15 Thread M. Taylor
Hello Jessica, et al:

Without getting into the specifics, which would take a novella to fully
explain, in my opinion, I strongly, strongly urge you not to hide the gMail All
Mail folder. Doing so may, and most likely will, cause Yosemite Mail problems.

Having the All Mail folder being displayed causes absolutely no loss of space,
as it were.

There is no official resolution except that someone at the bottom of the

For the time being though I will take the approach of if it anin'si not

Re: Saga trying to reinstall Yosemtie

2014-12-15 Thread Cheryl Homiak
My iMac shows as a late 2012.
I also may have a theory/solution re: the headphone jack. The other day I
couldn't get bluetooth sound with my jam xt bluetooth speaker though it would
control iTunes so I knew it was paired. I thought nothing of it since I saw
other posts of people saying they couldn't get sound on the Mac with this
speaker but it had worked for me before. Yesterday evening I discovered that no
headphones I had would work either though when I took the headphones out sound
was fine through my iMac's internal speakers. I do have soundflower so I was
showing a couple of items in output besides internal speakers but I wouldn't
have seen anything but internal speakers if I hadn't had soundflower. So since
I have braille I was able to experiment. I put the headphones in and interacted
with the output table and at first I saw no earphone choice. After moving
around for a few seconds the headphone choice finally appeared but there was
also a dialog to confirm the new setting; had I not done this it would have
reverted to internal speakers. I did so and my headphones worked with no
problem but at that point there was no choice for internal speakers. The next
time I inserted the headphones I didn't have this problem; the switch was
automatic. This morning I went in again with headphones on; they worked but
when I pulled them out I again had to go through the confirm dialog to change
settings back. So while I don't know exactly why sometimes the transition is
automatic and sometimes not, headphones and internal speakers will I blieve
never both be seen in your output table at the same time; the switch completely
replaces one designation with another. I actually think that may have been the
case before too but if the switch happened without a problem, one didn't have
to go looking in the output table. At any rate, I don't think this is a case of
the iMac forgetting its own hardware; it has something to do with the switch
not occurring automatically the the new choice not showing up immediately and
replacing internal speakers. You also have to watch out for that confirmation
dialog which could indeed cause you to reinstall if you end up with no sound
and don't have braille. In that case, I would look for some way to reset the
sound settings rather than reinstalling and I believe at one time I saw some
tips for doing that but I am not sure if that was on this list or not. I do
know that sound not switching is not a totally new phenomenon to Yosemite
because I remember doing a reverse backup of superduper - backing up from my
backup to my hard drive - to restore my settings for sound when I used a usb
speaker, unplugged it and found myself without sound and unable to get it back.
This does seem to be slightly different from that and my problem and yours may
not be identical but I think it is something with the management of the switch
back and forth from internal speakers.

Should I try a repare with checkdisc?

extended period of time. I suspect the problems are the result of the
Windows machine being rebooted or that there were changes in your
network during the interim.

tuexera ntfs drives on the mac side.

Should I try a repare with checkdisc?

Re: My Network

2014-12-15 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi y'all
I finally had to take off the alias that worked, but caused my computer to go
into fits. I think the problem was that the Windows computer is not always
awake when I want to access the network and I have to go and wake it up. That
would be ok except that even when I didn't want it apparently my computer was
trying to access the thing. I didn't think it would do that with an alias, but
I guess it did access or attempt to. I got Finder busy all the time until I
finally took off both the alias and earlier, the Public volume on my desktop.
Then I had to restart my computer without the network. Once I did that, my
computer is behaving fine now. It doesn't like my husband's network. I thought
I had messed up my computer for sure, but it has recovered now.

Re: Pages Formatting

2014-12-15 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
Another thing you can do is do most of your work on a resume in TextEdit. I
always get a reader to look at a resume, even though I know how to do the
formatting things you mentioned. This is because it just helps to get a good
reader to evaluate the looks of something that important anyway. If you stick
with the Windows computer, you can get Word to save it out in rtf format so you
can read yourself in TextEdit and maybe update it, too, even if you have to get
a reader look over it again once any updates are done later. Just some thoughts
here.

I do think it would be useful for you to learn Pages some time, but a resume is
usually a hurry up activity, and you want to learn Pages on something less
important. When I learn a program, I always use it for important things and
have a backup to check that I have things right.

Regards,
Gigi

Re: Results for Abbyy Fine reader pro?

2014-12-15 Thread Phil Halton
I don’t believe AFP has a built-in reader. I have AFP setup to automatically
export the scanned results to textedit and I read it there.
After completing a scan, you’ll need to poke around to find the export facility
(probably in the menus somewhere). I forget how I did it long ago, but it can’t
be too difficult if I figured it out.

Re: Pages Formatting

2014-12-15 Thread Phil Halton
just a note about exporting from word into rtf format for textedit, it’s not
necessary as textedit opens and reads .docx files just fine. I use textedit to
read docx files regularly.

Adobe Flash Player Not Installing

2014-12-15 Thread Shawn Krasniuk
Hi all. I'm posting this on two different lists to get a little more feedback
from people. This morning I went on a site to watch TV, time4tv.com
to be exact, and it's saying that I need to update my
Adobe Flash Player. Ok, no problem, I download the dmg for the update, opened
the dmg and copied the app to my apps folder, but when I launch it, I just get
an empty html thing where it's supposed to install. I had a sighted friend look
at the screen and she could only see a box and no indication that Flash Player
was installing. Has other people had problems installing the Flash Player? I do
have another question that's off topic so *PLEASE* email me off list. To all
gamers that have a little vision and own an Xbox 360 or PS3, preferably Xbox,
have any of you found any websites where I could watch live TV from your
console? I'm asking this because most of the time I like watching live TV
streams on my TV and not on the computer. Thanks.

Hi,

I thought flashplayer file is pkg file which you have to run, not an app you

Re: apps to listen to radio and tv

2014-12-15 Thread Faisal ali
Hi,
I found an ESPN radio stream on Radium. you can try doing it that way. Just for
ESPN. As for watching TV, I know on the windows side there is a program called
U TV (I believe) but not sure if one exists on the mac. I generally stick to
netflics and Hulu plus for any extensive television watching and just use my
regular television for any life television. I know its not ideal but I think
these are probably your best bet.

Re: Adobe Flash Player Not Installing

2014-12-15 Thread David Griffith
What happens in my case was that it was an installer.app file. So yes
you have to run the installer.

However there are two windows to the installer.
There is a window with an html element with which you have to interact
to read, and there is also another second monitoring window. If the
installer finds any problems like Safari being open and needing to close
this will be flagged up in the monitoring window where there will be
buttons like retry. In order to access this second window you need to
use window chooser with VO F2

twice. In general I found that throughout the installation process I had
to hit shift vo space bar on each button to execute them with a virtual
mouse click.

,as pressing VO space bar or enter or spcace did not work in my case.

it's supposed to install. I had a sighted friend look at the screen

Best way to Navigate Forum threads on the web

2014-12-15 Thread Brian Fischler
Hey all,

Do not ever recall this being discussed, and have read a lot about people
reading the Apple forums lately. I have noticed that whenever I need to browse
a forum site on the web doing it with VO can take forever. On most forum sites
there are no headings listed, so what I typically do is use auto webspots to
locate the first conversation but then I have to use the arrow keys to navigate
the page therefore having to read a lot of info that I could care less about to
just get to people’s reply. For example, I will have to arrow through things
like user names, last date on site, last date posted, etc. All of which I could
care less about when I just want to read the response. Has anyone found a
quicker way to navigate forums on the web, and if so can you let us know.
Thanks.

Re: apps to listen to radio and tv

2014-12-15 Thread Brian Fischler
Almost all major networks have their own website and offer streaming of their
shows a day or two after they air. The accessibility of these sites seems to
constantly be changing so it is more of a trial by error thing. I have had
issues playing most videos in safari as I do not like videos automatically
playing when I go to web sites so do not think I have adobe flash player
installed, so what I do when I want to watch a video is go to the page then go
to the develop menu and choose open in chrome and pretty much all the videos I
have wanted to listen to have played in chrome. Hope this helps.

Re: Saga trying to reinstall Yosemtie

2014-12-15 Thread David Griffith
You may not have the problem . It is unclear why some of us are
retaining Mavericks on our Recovery Console, even after installing
Yosemite but clearly this problem is not affecting everybody. Some
people are in fact getting the correct Yosemite Recovery Console.
I suggest you simply have a look by restarting and pressing Command R.
Obviously you do not have to proceed with any re-install but you will
then be able to hear whether you are being given the option to
re-install Mavericks or Yosemite.

If you hear Yosemite you are OK.
If Mavericks we are in the same situation.
I will start by trying to download the latest Yosemite installer and
replace my old installer with this.

Hmmm, for me that window just opened and was there but maybe it varies from
time to time. Also when I did this yesterday to get the buttons to work I had
to use vo-shift-space instead of just vo-space so if you seem to be stuck with
it saying you have to close safari when it's already closed, try that. I never
bother to move the installer app into the Applications folder but I don't think
it matters.

Can anyone explain what this app offers that the mobile site does not? I'm not

issue with mail

2014-12-15 Thread Faisal ali
So this os not my day today when it comes to technology. I’m having trouble
expanding and collapsing conversation threads in mail. I have it set to sort by
conversation but when ever I hit right arrow to expand a conversation, nothing
seems to happen. However, when I hit the left arrow, voiceover announces
collapsed even though this is not reflected using the arrow keys. Can anyone
shed some light on this?
Thanks

Thank you very much!
And can somebody help me to set things up, that after finisting a
digitalization, it exports it to Text edit?
After I digitalize pages, I get a button that says something like warnings, an
other that puts pages, etc.
I really don’t know where is that result.
This is the computer of a student and we are trying to make this work for her.
Thanks for all the help you can give!

The fix that works for me is to simply turn VO off, hit right arrow a couple

My other question is, is it possible to set the view to mobile? I know this was

Re: Observations

2014-12-15 Thread 'Chris Blouch' via MacVisionaries
Interesting. While I do have a good number of apps I think the bulk of
my iPhone content is media. While it's great that iCloud backs up
pointers to media stored on my computer, that means the iCloud backup
isn't really a full backup. If something goes kerfluey on my laptop the
copies on my phone are the only ones. Or is the assumption that my
generated content from the phone is being synced to icloud and then that
is synced to my laptop?

On 12/14/14, 10:33 AM, Tim Kilburn wrote:

Hi,

Actually Chris, this is a common misconception. When your iDevice is backed up
to iCloud, the entire device is not necessarily backed up. That is, the OS and
pre-installed apps are grabbed from Apple, only markers and setup info is
stored for your apps as they are downloaded after the fact, and the same is so
for your music. The actual music is not stored in the iCloud backup, just a
database of the songs, playlists and such that you can restore either from
iTunes Match or your computer. Thus, it is feasible to keep multiple backups
of multiple iDevices in iCloud simultaneously.

Hi,

Regarding iPhone backups. The process is as follows. If you have your iDevice
set to use iCloud Backups, then it will automatically backup to iCloud when
your iDevice is plugged in to power and connected to WiFi. this is regardless
of whether you have Mavericks, Yosemite, Windows or even a computer for that
matter. You can manually tell it to backup to iCloud from within the iCloud
area of Settings on your iDevice. If you have enabled iTunes WiFi Sync, then
your iDevices will sync with your Mac when they are both connected to the same
WiFi network and iTunes is open on the Mac. This is done over the air so you
don’t need to tether it with your USB cable in order for this to occur.
Realize though, that this is just syncing, it’s not backing up to iCloud. If
you have set your iDevice to backup to that same Mac instead of to iCloud, then
backups should occur using WiFi Syncing to that Mac.

Hope this makes sense.

Hello.

I am having problems with understanding Yosemite after coming from Mavericks.

For instance, my understanding was if you locked your I phone, you could back
it up to iCloud. However, this is not for me, as when I do it, I always get
the message that the process failed. However, if I use my Mac mini or I Mac to
do this, my I phone gets backed up.

Another thing I just discovered today was, that I don’t have to have my I phone
connected to any devices and I can back it up to my I Mac or my Mac mini
without having to connect it although initially I did connect it to a cable in
the first instance when I was instructed to do so.

A very nice thing I discovered was that the iCloud website was better when
sorting out my rules as before on Mavericks the process was rather complicated.
It’s so nice that Apple have worked to tidy things up now. I’m so glad that
braille is working at last on Yosemite as my Focus 40 would not connect via
bluetooth. Such a positive note for a good operating system.

Thank you.

Re: Hiding the Gmail all folder

2014-12-15 Thread Jonathan C. Cohn
One thing that might speed up gmail syncing and save space on your computer
would be to reduce the number of messages that Google iMAP allows to be
downloaded. My memory is that there is a checkbox with a default of 2000
messages. So supposedly if you checked this you would only have the 2K most
recent messages available unless you moved those that were important into “On
My Mac” folders.

Best wishes,

Jonathan

Re: Observations

2014-12-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

This is what I understand. If you primarily use iCloud as your backup solution
for your iDevice, then your Mac really isn’t in the picture, at least according
to Apples’ expectations. All apps are purchased through the iTunes Store, all
music is either streamed or downloaded from the iTunes Store and all settings
and app data are stored within the iCloud backup. Therefore, everything you
need is available over the air through this iCloud backup solution. Now, we
know better than that though, music ripped from CDs etc, and apps that are no
longer available in the iTunes Store also often reside on your iDevice. Using
the iCloud backup solution only, would be a problem if your iDevice crashed and
those items weren’t backed up elsewhere, or at least available from elsewhere.
Those, still useful apps and other non-purchased media would be lost.
Therefore, setting iTunes to download all your app purchases, and maintaining
copies of your media on your Mac is also a very good idea. Extend that further
to have a good backup routine for your Mac and you should never lose anything.

Two more things that I do to ensure I don’t lose anything, is to occasionally
do an iDevice backup through iTunes on my Mac, and make sure that my iDevice
and Mac are synced often. The latter just ensures that those apps that may no
longer be available through the iTunes Store, can still be brought back to my
iDevice through iTunes. . When you do a restore through iCloud, this dialog
often appears telling you exactly that. Some apps weren’t able to be
downloaded from the iTunes Store, connect your iDevice to your Mac and retrieve
those apps from iTunes. Add iTunes Match to the mix, and you can actually get
all of the music downloaded over the air as well.

Hope this makes sense.

 Hi,

Regarding iPhone backups. The process is as follows. If you have your
iDevice set to use iCloud Backups, then it will automatically backup to
iCloud when your iDevice is plugged in to power and connected to WiFi.
this is regardless of whether you have Mavericks, Yosemite, Windows or
even a computer for that matter. You can manually tell it to backup to
iCloud from within the iCloud area of Settings on your iDevice. If you
have enabled iTunes WiFi Sync, then your iDevices will sync with your Mac
when they are both connected to the same WiFi network and iTunes is open
on the Mac. This is done over the air so you don’t need to tether it with
your USB cable in order for this to occur. Realize though, that this is
just syncing, it’s not backing up to iCloud. If you have set your iDevice
to backup to that same Mac instead of to iCloud, then backups should occur
using WiFi Syncing to that Mac.

 Hope this makes sense.

Re: Observations

2014-12-15 Thread Faisal ali
the only problem with backing up your apps to your mac is that you lose all
your folders that you so painstakingly created on your iDevice. This is why I
prefer using iCloud as it preserves all your folders.
Another issue I noticed when using your mac is apps that get restored onto your
phone which you deleted. I once did a restore from my mac and I had over 6
pages of apps when I should only have two. I also found that I had pages and
pages of apps that I deleted a long time ago. The interesting thing is, I
actually backed up my phone after I deleted those apps so they should’ve have
gotten backed up to begin with.

Re: regarding current

2014-12-15 Thread Krister Ekstrom
According to the description on their web site, you should be able to have
Current in the background and be notified when something of importance happens,
but all i see is the hide feature that’s in the OS and that doesn’t hide the
app entirely. Wondering if there’s a way of doing like what you can do in Menu
tab and sorta hide the app completely? You can’t quit the app because then it
even disappears from the menu extensions. Anyone who has a clue about this?

Yes that’s exactly what it is, I am clicking command backspace and a here a

keys? When I hit keyboard help it tells me that key is called delete, so if
I'm hitting the correct keys why is it dinging?

Have you visited www.applevis.com yet? They have a page specifically for those
new to the Mac, with podcasts and written articles on everything from VoiceOver

Re: Results for Abbyy Fine reader pro?

2014-12-15 Thread Phil Halton
Daniela, this is how I scan documents using AFP.
1, in the “new task” screen, I select my scanner from the source table.
2, I check the “go right” checkbox to the left of the source table. That brings
up a scroll area to the right of the source table which contains buttons for
all the document types that I can scan to.
3, in the scroll area , I interact and click the button for .rtf format
document (just my personal choice, you can select any doc type you want.)
4, this brings up a “import” window, and my scanner makes an initial pass over
the document.
in this window there all kinds of settings that will affect your scan results.
probably the most important is the color depth setting. press the color depth
button and set it to “gray scale” it’s the optimum setting for OCR. Also
suggested is setting the resolution to 300DPI. the other settings are
self-explanatory, set them as you wish for best results.
5, at the far right/bottom of the window are the “scan” and “finish import”
buttons. With the document on the scanner, press “scan” for each page of the
document. Note: you can set
AFP to automatically scan after a pause allowing you to change pages on the
scanner, but unless you’re scanning a big doc, I find it best to manually scan
each page.
6, when done scanning pages, I press the “finish import” button and AFP OCR’s
the scanned pages, and then brings up a “save” dialog. I use the default
filename of untitled and press export. I then get a dialog asking if I want to
replace the previous Untitled document. I press the “replace” button and
textedit opens with my scan results. I can then do what I like with the results
and close textedit when done.
7, returning to AFP, I find myself in the “untitled” window which contains
tools for selecting areas on the scanned doc, and a lot of stuff I don’t bother
trying to use as it is mostly useful for sighted people. They can draw borders
around tables and other areas for additional scanning etc.
8, Now here’s where you want to set AFP to automatically export the scanned
results to textedit or some other viewing program. Unfortunately, I can’t seem
to find any setting for automatic export either. However, you can simply press
Command + S to start the export process manually. If I’m not mistaken, auto
export/save is not an actual setting from within AFP, but is done somehow in OS
X, telling it to automatically open AFP’s scan results in textedit. I’m going
to look into this because it really bothers me not to know.
I hope this has been somewhat helpful.

Re: actually now everything is dinging

2014-12-15 Thread David Griffith
In these circumstances it is worth checking Window Chooser to make sure that
there is not an alert window somewhere which is demanding your attention.
Unfortunatley not every window announces itself when it opens on the Mac.
Hit VO F2 twice to bring Window Chooser up.
Alternatively you may just have an application that has crashed. This happens
far less on the mac than on Windows but this does happen. Try hitting command
option escape and then in the force quit window which comes up interact with
the table of open applications and see if any
are not responding. If any app is causing a problem you can force it to quit
from this window.

Re: Results for Abbyy Fine reader pro?

2014-12-15 Thread Phil Halton
daniela,
I think I have found the procedure for getting AFP to automatically open the
scanned pages in textedit.
You must select “scan to rtf” in step #3. Then, when you press the “finish
import” button in step#6, AFP will automatically bring up the save dialog where
you export the scanned doc to an RTF document using the default title of
Untitled for a filename. Make sure the box for Open saved results after export
is checked, and since all rtf docs open with textedit by default in OS X,
textedit will open with your scanned pages.

Good Luck and let us know how it works.

Another possibility is to set up a smart folder.

You can set up a smart folder that has the rules folder: retail Age > 2 weeks
ago.

Then you would be able to just select all and delete every once in a while. I
certainly do this for the MacVisionaries since otherwise my system gets slow
syncing all the messages I will never have a chance to read.

Best wishes,

Re: vmware fusion eating the caps lock key

2014-12-15 Thread Phil Halton
In vmware preferences reached by pressing command + comma, select Keyboard and
mouse from the toolbar, then select the key remappings tab.
Press “add” to create a new key remap. in the first combo box press the accent
key, then vo right arrow over to the next combo box.
Here’s where it gets a little tricky, and you might need a sighted person to
work the mouse.
press VO space to open the combo box and arrow down to caps lock.
You need to mouse click the text of caps lock, but unfortunately, Mouse routing
is not too accurate in the combo box and sometimes it works and sometimes it
doesn’t. When I route the mouse the vo cursor, and then try to read what’s
under the mouse, I get a ding sound and clicking the mouse actually opens the
Apple menu instead of clicking the word caps lock in the combo box.
If you can get the mouse to click the combo box choice, then uninteract with
the combo box and verify your choices, then ppress “okay” to complete the key
remapping.
If you have problems getting the mouse to click the combo box as I do, get
someone with sight to mouse click the word “caps lock” and that should select
it. now uninteract and press “okay after verifying the choices.
Make sure “enable key mappings” is checked and you are done.
Now, in your windows or whatever OS, when you press the accent key, VMWare
should present a caps lock to the VM’s OS instead.

This is a feature that I had forgotten about. It lets you know where on the
Macintosh screen the VoiceOVer cursor is currently located. This can be turned
off in VoiceOver Utility under the Sounds area there is a checkbox called

Not able to access window chooser

2014-12-15 Thread Bobby Druesedow
Hello:

When I hit the VO keys and F2 to access window chooser, I hear a percentage of
brightness. Nothing happens when I do this except for brightness 38% or
whatever percentage it is set on. Is there something I am doing wrong or a
setting that I do not have correctly set? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: vmware fusion eating the caps lock key

2014-12-15 Thread Phil Halton
Okay, a follow up to my previous instructions. At the point where you need to
mouse click the word caps lock in the combo box, There are two things you can
do to get past this little glitchy part.
First, instead of routing the mouse to the VO cursor with VO command F5, I have
found here as in other programs that setting the mouse to follow the vo cursor
in VO settings works better than trying to route the cursors in the app .
So, before attempting the remap, open VO settings with VO f8, and under
navigation, set “mouse to follow VoiceOver cursor”.
Now go ahead and do the remap, and when you arrow down to caps lock in the
combo box, just click the mouse either with the trackpad or vo shift spacebar,
and then uninteract once or twice to get out of the combo box. I just tried
this several times and it worked consistently for me.

the other way is to also set VO to announce what is under the mouse in the
announcements tab of the verbosity settings of VO settings. Do this in addition
to having the mouse track the VO cursor.
Then, in the remap combo box, press VO Space on the combo box to open it up and
insert will be at the top of the list. Slowly draw your finger down the
trackpad and VO will announce each key in the list as you go. When you hear
“caps lock” about the fifth key in the list, stop and click the mouse.
Now exit the combo box by uninteresting a few times and verify the selections.

Again, I tested these two methods out and they worked consistently for me.
I am using VMWare V7, but it should work for V6 or V5 too. (I remember doing
this same procedure back when I was using V5).

good luck

Re: Not able to access window chooser

2014-12-15 Thread Phil Halton
If you have not set your FKeys to act as software function keys in system
preferences, then you’ll also need to hold down the function key along with the
F2 and VO keys.
This is done in system preferences/Keyboard/keyboard tab. Arrow right to the
button that says “use all f1, f2 etc keys as standard function keys” and check
it. Now, The FKeys will act as software function keys, and you must add the
function key to the FKey in order to perform the associated hardware function
(brightness volume etc).

Trouble with tab key and appearing to lose focus

2014-12-15 Thread Bobby Druesedow
Hello:

This will be the last question I asked today. I think everyone for their quick
responses and being patient with my learning curve.

It seems that I can navigate okay using the tav key sometime and then I lose
the tav key functionality. This seems to happen the most when I am trying to
navigate through text messages or in email. For I wow, I am able to type in the
text fields and then it seems that I may be hitting a wrong key combination
which loses focus on the text field and the keyboard will no longer type.
Without the tav I can't seem to get the cursor back where I need it in order to
type. When I do hear text field the cursor doesn't seem to be there and when I
try to type nothing is entered. Any help with this one would be greatly
appreciated. Thanks.

2014-12-15 Thread Faisal ali
Hi,
I assume you mean the Tab key? you wrote Tav but think that might've been a
dictation error.
Its a little difficult to diagnose your issue as there sin’t much information
to work with but I should probably mention that the tab key by default will
interact with tables and other intractable areas. I’m not sure if this is your
issue or not but its certainly worth mentioning.

Hi david, vo f2 did nothing so I tried the command option escape, the 2 items

In these circumstances it is worth checking Window Chooser to make sure that
there is not an alert window somewhere which is demanding your attention.
Unfortunatley not every window announces itself when it opens on the Mac.
Hit VO F2 twice to bring Window Chooser up.
Alternatively you may just have an application that has crashed. This happens
far less on the mac than on Windows but this does happen. Try hitting command
option escape and then in the force quit window which comes up interact with
the table of open applications and see if any
are not responding. If any app is causing a problem you can force it to quit
from this window.

Re: actually now everything is dinging

2014-12-15 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

In the future, when using the Force Quit dialog, don’t do anything with the
Finder, it will likely just get you into an unwanted problem. For now, to get
you back up and running, press and hold down the power button for about 10
seconds. This will force shutdown your Mac. Wait 10 to 20 seconds then press
the power button normally to turn your Mac back on. Everything should be back
to normal again. Wasn’t really following this thread, so, I’m not sure what
caused your issue, but this is very uncharacteristic.

putting captions on photos

2014-12-15 Thread Jean
Hello All:

I want to put captions and titles on photos, maps and/or other files that are
currently in jpg format. What is the best way to do this? I thought about
doing it in keynote then exporting them as pdf although I really want them to
end up as jpg files. What other ways are there to do this?

Jean
