One thing that might speed up gmail syncing and save space on your computer would be to reduce the number of messages that Google iMAP allows to be downloaded. My memory is that there is a checkbox with a default of 2000 messages. So supposedly if you checked this you would only have the 2K most recent messages available unless you moved those that were important into “On My Mac” folders.
