Yes that’s exactly what it is, I am clicking command backspace and a here a 
ding.  Is the backspace key the last one on the keyboard under the top row of 
keys?  When I hit keyboard help it tells me that key is called delete, so if 
I'm hitting the correct keys why is it dinging?

   I'm assuming you are on the desktop.  That's probably a VoiceOver audio log 
file.  Just command-backspace on it to delete it.  You can open apps from the 
Dock or open a Finder window from there with command-n.
