[g-i] new screenshots available (dejavu 2.16)
Hi,
bubulle has kindly uploaded the new version of ttf-dejavu (2.16-1).
I took the usual screenshots; please refer to [1] to see what changed
since version 2.15.
The screenshots can be found in [2], where you can see what changed
from the previous version.
You'll notice there are many differences: it is a bug in pango, which
is said to be currently worked on.
For those who care here is a conversation on #dejavu about the problem:

Looks like there are differences only for "bg" and "he": probably some glyphs got hinted. [g-i] Use of ttf-dejavu for rendering Georgian text
Hi, as I reported in [1], version 2.18 of ttf-dejavu (currently in sid), adds support for Georgian which helps achieving a better consistency in g-i and desktop in general. g-i still includes and uses Georgian glyphs coming from ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts-udeb but I'd like to change it as to switch to use ttf-dejavu if it's ok with native speakers (in cc). I've prepared a few screenshots [2] to show how both fonts render the same text samples at different fontsizes: bgp is on the left side, dejavu 2.18 on the right. [g-i] switch to ttf-dejavu for Georgian
Hi, as announced in [1], I've just switched g-i as to use ttf-dejavu to render Georgian text instead of ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts-udeb This involved a few steps: * remove ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts-udeb from installer/build/gtk-common/ (r48873) * I've filed #435970 asking to stop providing the udeb for ttf-bpg-georgian-fonts * I've updated the wiki at http://wiki.debian.org/DebianInstaller/GUIFonts * build / test a g-i image with qemu (looks nice!) Please let me know if there's anything I've forgot. [d-i] spellchecker: support for all languages
Hi, PO files are not so handy when it comes to spellchecking; http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/spellcheck/ was set up to help translators in the task of spottin typos. After a few months of tests on the translations of the post-Sarge branch of the installer it has been extended as to cover all languages supported by the installer, for all the levels (1-4 / post-Sarge). This means that even if an aspell dictionary for a particular language is not installed on Alioth, you can find informations that will help you to keep your language up to date and as much error-free as possible. Here is a sort of legenda of the report tables: * LANG_all.txt contains *all* the strings for LANG; this means you can run your favourite spellchecker against it * LANG_unkn_wl.txt is the list of words not found in the aspell-LANG dictionary (obviously only if there is one!) * LANG_var.txt contains all the "suspect variables": variables that could spellchecked or missing. Documentation for the spellchecker
I'm trying to write down some documentation for the spellchecker, both for a future deb package and (mainly) for the translators who want to use it to spellcheck po files for the installer. ATM the plain text documentation is derived from notes/emails collected in the last few weeks; before merging it with the "Debian Installer Internationalization and Localization Guide" at http://people.debian.org/~bubulle/d-i/i18n-doc/ I'd like to know what you think about it; In particular I'd like to know if the structure of the document should be changed or I can just go on adding stuff to what is there. spellchecker update
The spellchecker is using official Sarge tools (aspell, all the
dictionaries and gnuplot); this means both aspell and the various
dictionaries where "apt-get install"ed by the sysadmins of Alioth.
At the moment only the languages with an aspell dictionary in stable
will be spellchecked: bad for languages like "ro", good for Finnish.

and if f your language is among those not automatically spellchecked , you
can still make good use of the files provided by the spellchecker:
If you have an aspell dictionary for you language, download ${LANG}_all.txt
and spellcheck it yourself this way:
# This will produce the file unkn.txt containing all the unknown words with the
occurrence count
cat ${LANG}_all.txt | aspell list --lang=${LANG} --encoding=utf-8 | sort -f |
uniq -c > unkn.txt
if you have (or you prefere) ispell you can use it with the "-l" option to
produce the same
list of unknown words.
Variable substitution is checked for all the languages listed in the
spellchecker page, so
you can use that information too.
If you found anything wrong with the dictionary (i.e. words reported as unknown
when they should
not) , please use the BTS and report the bug.
If anything is not clear please let me know.

that's true, but I'm sure a lot of the infos produced by the spellchecker
can be used by all language teams:
* suspect variables are easily spotted
* the file containing all the language msgstrs, without english strings,
is useful for consistency check and if there's any tool for analyzing your
language strings

The spellchecker run against two "flavors" of level1 translations: * level1-post-sarge * level1-sarge I just discovered that po files in level1-sarge branch were infact po files for trunk... In a nutshell: now http://d-i.alioth.debian.org/spellcheck/ has level1 to level5 plus the manual. Have to ask seppy to include translations for the Sarge branch of the installer in the daily archive I use. Sorry for the incovenient. the spellchecker uses aspell for spotting such typos, but obviously only
for the languages that have an aspell dictionary; for the other levels,
the spellchecker can still be useful, but not for syntax checking, so your
script might fill that gap!

I've just committed a patch which makes it possible to add a level-specific script to the spellchecker. ATM it's used with level1 translations, and it is used to check the following: 1) check for "Choose language" in the translation of the "Choose language" string (if it's been translated... if msgstr is different from "") 2) translation for the mirror country (again, if msgstr is different from ""): the "correct" translation here is an existing two-letter country code, in ASCII and all caps. 3) Make sure every msgstr containing "#. Adding spellchecker stats to existing d-i stats
I'd be interested in adding infos obtained with the spellchecker to the statistics pages, so that everytime a new error is spotted translators know about it. ATM seppy's script comes up with the following: ... Global statistics: 1593t2f0u (99%) (total strings: 1595=100%) (From all it.po files) Master: 1462t2fu Spellcheck: unknown words in master file.. ... Currently, the spellchecker page (see [1]) reports various columns; the relevant information needed to produce useful stats is contained in the following columns: "Unknown words" - available only for languages with an aspell-lang dictionary "Suspect variables" "Specific checks" "Codepoints" - not sure this is needed but might be useful anyway I just modified the scripts as to produce numerical information for the above columns (can't commit since svn is not working). Now, the above infos should be fetched and the line saying "Spellcheck: unknown words in master file.." should be changed into something like (for example) "Spellcheck: 3u5v12s149c" languages with no aspell dictionary should be probably handled differently: maybe using "-1u". let me know what you think about this. I think the most important things translators should be automatically notified about are not typos, but things like wrong/missing variables, broken multiselect entries and such: things which badly break the installer. As for spotting typos, you can easily download the "vi_all.txt" file which is updated everyday around 11 UTC and spellcheck it locally on your mahine using your favourite spellchecker (not necessarily aspell). [g-i] new screenshots available
Dejavu 2.7 has made it into unstable and things are happening on the font side. I just created a new set of screenshots in [1]; everything is pretty much the best we can do atm, apart from Arabic / Farsi (see #374720) It would be interesting to have some feedback from native speakers; I'd be particularly interested to know how is Vietnamese displayed using Dejavu (we don't use freefont anylonger to display it) and how non-latin languages look like. Dejavu fonts: call for testing
As many of you probably know, dejavu fonts have been chosen as default font for the graphical version of the debian-intaller (g-i); this means that 48 of the 64 currently supported languages rely on dejavu fonts for rendering text. I've started lurking the dejavu IRC channel and mailing list and got in touch with the developers; Nicolas Mailhot proposed an interesting initiative on the dejavu ML: a cross-distribution call for test of the latest version of the dejavu fonts (see [1] for details). I've started a similar initiative a while before ([2]) which helped to find and fix quite a few problems related to fonts inside g-i. despite being very useful, it ended up being a bit messy and unpractical: I got private emails which should have been sent to the ML instead, and often messages were sent only to one of the two MLs involved. Morover, keeping track of reports for so many languages is not easy. I think if we found a way of joining the forces to help the dejavu project could be good for everyone and speed up the developement of better fonts; my (g-i oriented) purpose is to take part to this "round of feedbacks" by judging the screenshots (like [3]) captured in a g-i environment. I'll do my best to report success stories to the dejavu ML [4], and to report bugs to the appropriate BTS [5]. Our wiki [6] lists which of the supported languages use dejavu.
