Bug#338043: drupal: Setup fails

2005-11-07 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: drupal
Version: 4.5.5-2
Severity: important

Hi,

thank you for packaging drupal. I appreciate it.

Today I tried to install drupal on a system running testing. I prefer
PostgreSQL so I chose that at first. Apparently, the tables were not created
by the script althoug I told it to
do that. After that did not work and the docs had no information for a manual
PostgreSQL setup I thought I should try MySQL. But "dpkg-reconfigure drupal"
apparently did not work.
I entered the information and told the script to use MySQL now. The failure
message from going to http://localhost/drupal would still indicate that
PostgreSQL was the database
("Warning: pg_query(): Query failed: ERROR: relation "users" does not exist in
/usr/share/drupal/includes/database.pgsql.inc on line 104").

Best

Rolf

Bug#338223: xlibs: (EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap, falling back to pre-XKB keymap

2005-11-08 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: xlibs
Version: 6.8.2.dfsg.1-7

Hi,

I experienced the same problem with "xlibs: (EE) Couldn't load XKB keymap,
falling
back to pre-XKB keymap" after upgrading my Debian system running testing
yesterday.
I assume the bug entered testing during the last couple of days.

Hi Peter,

thank you for your mail.

As I wrote you in another mail, the system I made the initial bug rport
from runs stable. The one where I had the problems was running testing.
I am not asking to do an upload to stable to fix something in the docu.
But please change this bug from wontfix and do add a note for the
unstable and testing distributions. Thank you.

Bug#339022: firefox: remote and local Firefox session not separated

2005-11-14 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: firefox
Version: firefox
Severity: normal

Hi,

thank you for maintaining the Firefox packages. We love you guys!

Today I opened a remote xterm via "ssh -X $IP xterm". From the xterm I
called firefox. I was amazed to find out that FF came up with my local
bookmarks and starting page. It turned out that FF was running locally,
not remotely.

Upon closer inspection it became clear that whenever an FF process is
already running locally, calling the process remotely still launches FF
locally. The opposite is also true. I quit all FF processes and called
it remotely which succeeded. Launching it from a local console then
does nothing but open another remote FF process.

Konqueror behaves sanely in this respect so I assume it has to do with
FF itself.

Best regards

Rolf

Bug#336930: egroupware: tcpip_socket not enabled as default for postgresql 7.4

2005-11-01 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: egroupware-core
Version: 1.0.0.007-2.dfsg-2sarge2
Severity: important
File: egroupware

Hi,

I lost quite a few hours trying to install egroupware on my Debian
testing system. Turns out the problem was that version 7.4 of
postgresql does not enable tcpip_socket by default in postgresql.conf.
That was necessary before I was able to use egroupware. Before that,
egroupware appears to have been unable to access the database.

Please include a note to that effect in README.Debian. Thank you.

Bug#310550: locales: locale-gen fails (cannot lock with user-space NFS server)

2005-06-09 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: locales
Version: 2.3.2.ds1-21
Followup-For: Bug #310550

Lars and Masanori,

thank you for your answers. I first tried the suggested mount option
"nolock" but without any change in the result. Then I investigated the
locking on the NFS server and found that the user-space NFS server does
not provide this. I remember explicitly using user-space instead of
kernel-space because of problems with exporting /dir with default
settings and /dir/usr with option no-root-squash. The kernel-nfs server
would complain about an "invalid argument" so I switched to the
user-space NFS daemon as suggested in IRC. I guess, right now I am SOL.

Bug#312907: xfe: File associations could be more sophisticated

2005-06-10 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: xfe
Version: 0.66-6
Severity: wishlist

Bastian,

determination of file associations is suboptimal in xfe IMHO. First, it
relies on filename extensions which is not the most reliable solution.
Then again, calling "file $file" might not be the time-effective, either
;-) I wonder if there is a better way to do this. Not recognizing .Mp3
as the obviously intended mp3 file is not good, no matter what.

Package: gaim

Robert,

thank you for maintaining gaim. The background for the systray icon of

since their default status is also grey. I use a dark blue status bar
and therefore it would be nice if the background were transparent
instead of grey.

I think this would be a good idea. Maybe mention it somewhere in README

Wouldn't it be a good idea to change Debian policy in this respect?
What do you think?

Bug#310319: hylafax-client: Transparency in PDF not handled correctly

2005-05-22 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: hylafax-client
Version: 1:4.2.1-5
Severity: normal

Hi,

I just came across something potentially very nasty. sendfax apparently
does not deal correctly with sending transparency in a PDF. Faxing the
attached PDF will show a black box instead of the graphic. Beware that
xpdf will also show this PDF incorrectly. Acrobat Reader on Windows
shows it fine so I assume acroread will do too on Linux.

Regards

Rolf

PS: Please advise me if sendfax is indeed the wrong package for
reporting this behaviour. Looking through the dependencies, I did not
find a more appropriate package.

Bug#258290: sysvinit: cannot find console device 136:0 in /dev

2005-04-15 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: sysvinit
Version: 2.86.ds1-1
Followup-For: Bug #258290

Miquel,

I also experience this bug. From
http://lists.debian.org/debian-user/2005/03/msg03785.html I understand you are
not
placing too high a priority on following up on these bugs. My computer runs
sarge and does not have udev, I still
get the error "cannot find console device 136:0 in /dev" upon trying to start
bootlog. You say these bugs are hard
to troubleshoot since people often do not respond back to questions. What is
the device 136:0? If I knew that I'd
send you more meaningful output. Let me know any questions you may have.

Regards

Rolf

Bug#292521: /etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server: Further info for this bug

2005-04-24 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: nfs-kernel-server
Version: 1:1.0.6-3.1
Followup-For: Bug #292521

Hi,

I have experienced something similar which I think might be related to this bug
so I file it here
instead of opening a new bug report.

In /etc/exports I had the following two lines

/mnt/hdc1/ 192.168.1.12(rw,sync)
/mnt/hdc1/export-laptop/ 192.168.1.12(rw,sync,no_root_squash)

"/etc/init.d/nfs-kernel-server restart" resulted in:

Stopping NFS kernel daemon: mountd nfsd.
Unexporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...done.
Exporting directories for NFS kernel daemon...192.168.1.12:/mnt/hdc1: Invalid
argument
done.
Starting NFS kernel daemon: nfsd mountd.

Only after I changed the first line to "/mnt/hdc1/
192.168.1.12/255.255.255.255(rw,sync)" did the
restart go through without reporting an error. I have not yet tested if it
works as intended, though.

Rolf

something). What I did spot was that this bug report is already a few

I doubt that. But I readily admit I always fail to understand why so
often technical competence is coupled with utter social ineptitude.
Sorry to disturb. I was trying to help, but I guess some ppl really
have no clue apart from programming at all, if that. How sad.

Bug#309992: xfe: "File move"-window annoyance

Bastian,

found another annoying bug in the new xfe which will probably make me

front for every single file and grabs focus (at least under icewm).
That makes it impossible to do any normal work while moving files :-(

Bug#294122: xfce4: XFTerm4 cannot be started from XFCE panel

2005-02-07 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: xfce4
Version: 4.0.5-1
Severity: normal

Hi,

just upgraded from woody to sarge. Previously, I did not yet have XFCE
on this machine so the configuration is pretty OOTB.

When I click on the icon for the terminal in the XFCE panel it appears
as if the computer is trying to start the application but in the end
nothing really happens. I thought that maybe there is some issue with
the path environment and that the executable cannot be found. So I
looked up the location with 'which xfterm4' and changed the properties
for the panel entry to /usr/bin/xfterm4. This did not change anything.
Currently I am without shell access under XFCE.

Previously I used nano, it was changed to mcedit-debian without my

written without confirmation. Thus marking the bug as serious
because it violates policy.

Bug#301197: pump: IP gotten from DHCP not released upon restart

2005-03-24 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: pump
Version: 0.8.21-1
Severity: important

Anibal,

thank you for your work on pump.

Apparently, there is no mechanism in place to release the IP gotten via
DHCP at reboot or shutdown. This can lead to rather severe problems
in dual-boot situations therefore tagging as important.

The problem is as follows. I have set up my DHCP server to assign
specific IPs for some network cards. One of those cards is in a
Windows/Debian dual-boot machine. After Debian has not released the IP,
the computer rebooting into Windows will get an IP assigned from the
"free-for-all pool". That of course is not intended. I block IPs from
the "free-for-all pool" for certain services on the LAN server, they are
relegated to guest status.

The fix would be to make sure that a script is called at the time of
shutdown to release all IPs gotten via DHCP. I am not 100% sure that
pump would and should be the package to do that but it appears most
appropriate to me ATM.

Regards

Rolf

Bug#316349: /usr/share/doc/shaper/README.shaper.gz: Reference to cache in documentation is incorrect for Debian

2005-06-30 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: shaper
Version: 2.2.12-0.7.3-1
Severity: minor
File: /usr/share/doc/shaper/README.shaper.gz

David,

thank you for maintaining shaper for Debian. I appreciate your work.

Just wanted to bring a minor issue to your attention. README.shaper.gz
says in one of the first few paragraphs that caching is done in
/var/cache/cbq.init which does not appear to be the case for a Debian
system. I assume that /var/cache/shaper/ is the correct place. It would
be nice if the documentation were to be updated.

Regards

Rolf

openoffice.org-spellcheck-de-de ought to depend on
myspell-de-de-oldspell as well as an alternative for those that do not
want the new spelling rules. The same goes for the AT and CH packages.

I cannot find this package in Debian.

Martin,

it appears that this is a deprecated package that has been removed some
time ago from debian. I guess I must have gotten it from
snapshot.debian.net. Sorry for bothering you.

Bug#316999: libapache-mod-gzip, libapache-mod-dav and apache-ssl fail to install

2005-07-05 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: libapache-mod-dav

Andreas

thank you for maintaining libapache-mod-gzip. Unfortunately it fails to
install on my strictly stable system. The same is also true for the
other packages meantioned in the subject. I suspect there might be some
common error behind this. I tried installation via apt-get or aptitude
so declared packaged dependencies should be satisfied. I also ran
apt-get install update before installation. Still, no go. The error
returned is from dpkg that the post-install script exited with error 10.

Other people on IRC were able to successfully install said packages into
strictly stable systems. My suspicion is the problem might be due to an
undeclared and in my case unfulfilled dependency. I have the output of
"COLUMNS=200 dpkg -l" in a file saved on my computer in case you need it
later on. I wonder if this is related to bug 243433.

Bug#318148: dh-kpatches: Documentation is incomplete

2005-07-13 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: dh-kpatches
Version: 0.99.35
Severity: wishlist

Yann,

thank you for maintaining dh-kpatches over the years.

To benefit from the wonders of make-kpkg I today tried to debianize a 3rd party
kernel patch. I read the info available for dh_installkpatch but it is
missing instructions on how to create all files except for $patchname.kpatch.
maint-guide or google were not helpful either. When I run dh_installkpatches
the script complains about a missing debian/rules file. Other people seemed to
have had similar problems as can be seen in
http://groups.google.de/group/linux.debian.user/browse_thread/thread/c365f7c55522cc55/fe2cd2b8f6f69681?q=dh_installkpatches&rnum=5&hl=de#fe2cd2b8f6f69681
 for
example. There seems to be no information to be had anywhere on the web on how
to do this.

Please include such information in the documentation for the dh-kpatches
package. Thank you.

Dan,

please excuse me for jumping in. I fail to see the benefit of changing

point out that you are mistaken in your assumption that empty subject
lines would always be caught. I for one use $EDITOR on the terminal not
my mail program to write the bug reports and thus I will not get an
empty subject warning.

No or little benefit of the change, but potential downsides -> My vote
goes to stay with current policy.

think that around that time, the mailnews component started acting funny
when I reply to or create a new message. Instead of the window to input
my message I get a pop-up window with yellow background and black and
red text. The title of the pop-up is "Gecko", the text reads as follows

Bug#333351: asterisk: Log files owned by root

2005-10-11 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: asterisk
Version: 1:1.0.7.dfsg.1-2
Severity: important

Dear VoIP Team,

thank you for packaging asterisk.

Maybe I made a mistake but today I tried to install asterisk on one of
my computers. Asterisk failed to start so I enabled verbose debugging
in /etc/default/asterisk. The reason for the failure seems to be that
asterisk cannot open /var/log/asterisk/messages for writing since it is
owned by root as are event_log and queue_log. I cannot remember
changing those files so I assume they were created by the package with
that ownership. Maybe you want to take a look.

Hi,

today I tried to install an Asterisk server. The program would fail to
start while asterisk-app-dtmftotext was installed. Only after
deinstallation did I get things working.

Bug#328835: asterisk: Problem with app_capiCD.so

2005-09-17 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: asterisk
Version: 1:1.0.7.dfsg.1-2
Severity: important

Hi,

just installed asterisk on my server. It fails to start. I attach the
output of "asterisk -c". I first went to #asterisk on IRC to see if
the people there could help me. I was told that most likely there was
some kind of version mismatch in one of the compiled files/libs.

Best regards

Rolf

Bug#322074: "apt-cache policy $PKG" does not work correctly with apt-proxy

2005-08-08 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: apt
Version: 0.5.28.6
Severity: minor

Hi,

to lower the burden on the official Debian servers and mirrors I
installed apt-proxy as a local cacheing proxy for debs for the LAN.
Now, I just found out about the wonderful option to see where a specific
package can be gotten from via "apt-cache policy $PKG". If using a
local apt-proxy this will result in something like

# apt-cache policy myspell-de-de-oldspell
myspell-de-de-oldspell:
  Installed: 2-22
  Candidate: 2-22
  Version Table:
 *** 2-22 0
500 http://server testing/main Packages
100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

Of course, this is not useful since there might be several entries for
testing packages. Maybe it would be a good idea to output the full
URL. Currently, it is impossible to tell whether this file will be
gotten from http://server:/source1/testing/$blah or
http://server:/source2/testing/$blah.

But then again, maybe I am just making a mistake.

This is also related to bug 154868. My report is broader in scope,

Bug#320735: egroupware: Installation of recent security update broke my system?

2005-07-31 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: egroupware
Version: 1.0.0.007-2.dfsg-2sarge1
Severity: important

Peter,

thank you for maintaining egroupware for debian.

It looks like the recent security update broke my installation. At least I
cannot log in as a normal user anymore. egroupware will just sit there and
after
about 5 times the time it normally takes to log in, it will return me to the
login screen and say "Ihre Sitzung konnte nicht verifiziert werden" "Your
session
could not be verifified". That is all. I am 1005 certain the password is
correct and otherwise it would also tell that the PW is not correct. The
system
only started acting up after I installed the update.

Hi,

I just found out something interesting. If I press Alt+F7 or choose

the mouse or the cursor keys, the windowing widgets will come up and be

Bug#63995: bugs.debian.org: Why the uncompromising, unfounded by argument stance?

2005-08-06 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: bugs.debian.org
Followup-For: Bug #63995

Hi,

many people have reported this to be an issue for them. Quite a few of
them quit writing bug reports. I really do not understand why the
maintainers of bdo blatantly ignore this problem when solutions have
been put forward that do not impact upon contactability while
restraining the thugs at least to a certain extent. The @ is still
unmasked in the web pages. I take this as a sign that the Debian
organization disrespects my and others right to privacy. Again there is
NO loss whatsoever from doing this. The last message from Johan Walles
has just been ignored.

In light of the current situation, I also think that the absolute,
uncompromising stance in favor of publication of mail addresses vs.
privacy needs discussion and revision. There is a trade-off but an
absolute stance in most situations will be unbalanced.

The situation of unmasked @ on the website where this is not even a
trade-off is just an affront!

Regards

Rolf Leggewie

Bug#294484: debootstrap should honour --version

2005-02-09 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: debootstrap
Version: 0.2.45-0.1
Severity: wishlist

Today I tried a remote install of Debian via a chroot and debootstrap.
Base system was the latest Knoppix 3.7. I ran into some difficulties
(among others those reported in 253348 and 253468) since apparently
version 0.2.41-0.2 which is installed on the Knoppix CD cannot
bootstrap a sarge system. It would have helped if it had been easier to
find out about the version of debootstrap than doing "dpkg -l deboot*".
IMHO --version would be a worthwhile addition to the debootstrap
command.

Bug#295841: Regression: top scrolls off screen in cygwin-ssh terminal

Package: ncurses-base

Hi,

I want to report a regression. I often ssh into a remote Debian box.

client I use is the one from cygwin.com.

When issuing the top command in the remote terminal, there is a blank
line inserted after every line which makes top permanently scroll off
and refresh the screen (issue with CR&LF misinterpretation?). This
works just fine in Woody, but not after upgrading to sarge, so there is
a regression somewhere.

Please excuse me for perhaps reporting this to the wrong package. The
inner workings of this are not at all clear to me. My research made me
believe that it might have to do with some mistake in terminfo which
AFAIK holds the information on how different terminals are handled.
/usr/share/terminfo/c/cygwin belongs to ncurses-base. Such is my
reasoning to report it here.

I should make you aware that this problem has also been reported to
procps as bug 274251. I am not sure what this may have to do with
procps and the bug has just been sitting there for the last couple of
months.

Best regards

Rolf Leggewie

Bug#201437: dnsmasq: Close this bug?

2005-02-18 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: dnsmasq
Followup-For: Bug #201437

I know nothing about dnrd so my comment might be totally off the mark.

I guess making dnsmasq provid dnrd would only make sense if there are
packages depending on dnrd. But even then the better solution IMHO
would be for the other packages to depend on dnsmasq or another DNS
server rather than making dnsmasq provide dnrd which AFAICT it does not
really do.

If my analysis is indeed correct it might make sense to close this bug
which is almost two years old.

Chris,

today I installed reportbug on another machine which will be using a
smarthost to send bug reports. debconf asked me whether an MTA was
installed and I said no. It then offered me to enter the name of a
smarthost. What it did not ask for and what will also be necessary in
most cases was the user and password for that smarthost. I think it
would be a good idea to ask for that information as well if the user
entered a smarthost. Otherwise their system might not be usable.

Bug#295999: dnsmasq: entries for DDNS are kept for too long

2005-02-19 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: dnsmasq
Version: 1.23
Severity: important

Hi,

the version of dnsmasq I use on my router is 1.23. I think positive
results for anything *.dyndns.org, *.no-ip.com and other such dynDNS
service providers are kept for too long. IMHO they should not be cached
at all or maybe only for a minute or so.

In the last couple of days I frequently had to restart dnsmasq to reach
a computer accessible via dyndns.org because even one hour after the IP
update dnsmasq still returned the old IP. DNS servers at dyndns.org had
long since been updated and after the restart of dnsmasq, which I assume
flushes the cache, everything worked just fine.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have this configurable just like
bogus-nxdomain so the user can add from the myriad of providers out
there after the release of dnsmasq.

I do not know too much about DNS but isn't there a setting for TTL? Does
dnsmasq honor that and is it really dyndns.org who is the culprit for
having set that value too high?

Best regards

Bug#296077: upgrade-reports: Upgrade from Woody to Sarge: System hosed

2005-02-19 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Package: upgrade-reports
Version: woody -> sarge
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks the whole system

Hi,

about a week ago I took the plunge and upgraded one of my machines from
Woody to Sarge. Apart from the official packages I also had some
packages from backports or compiled from source. After replacing woody
in sources.list with sarge, I did an apt-get upgdate and after that an
apt-get dist-upgrade. As expected quite a number of packages were
scheduled for being upgraded. What was a bit unexpected was that there
were also a large number of packages scheduled for removal. I aborted
to make a backup of /etc/ and to direct the output of apt-get into a
file so that I would be able to install later on the packages that had
been removed. This way, I thought, everything would go smoothly.

Unfortunately, that was not the case. The upgrade ended half-way
through telling me that there was an undefined symbol Perl_gthr_key_ptr.
Going from there I found out with Google's help that there had
previously been similar bugs classified when dist-upgrading from woody
to sarge (278417, 278495 and 279232, possibly others, apparently there
is no way search to search for a string in bug reports present in the
BTS system). These were classified as RC.

Apparently the abortion of the upgrade is due to the fact that perl is
in an inconsistent state out of which the system cannot free itself.
And indeed 'dpkg -l perl*|grep ^i' tells me that perl, perl-modules and
perl-suid are version 5.8.4 -5, installed but unconfigured (iU) and that
perl-base is 5.6.1-8.8 (ii), perl-t k is 800.025-2 (iU) and perlmagick
is 5.4.4.5-1woody (ii). As advised on #debian, I tried via aptitude if
that was able to fix the mess, but quickly found out that it would most
likely only make matters worse. Thus I backed off and have not touched
the system since.

I have the following information still on file and can make it available
on request. I hope you understand that I do not include it yet in this
bug report for reasons of privacy and so as not to flood the BTS.

 - tar file of /etc (and /home) before the upgrade
pre-upgrade /var I have unfortunately no copy of
 - output of apt-get on what packages to install and which to remove
 - output of dpkg -l right after the failed upgrade
 - and of course the system itself in its current state

My assumption is that from this it should be possible to somehow
reconstruct what packages were installed at the time I tried the upgrade
and thus analyze what triggered this failure.

Best regards

Rolf Leggewie

Mathew,

thank you for packaging ssh related stuff. It is very important for
security. I regularly use ssh as well as scp. It would be great if the
two packages were more flag-compatible. For example, when specifiying
the port on the command line ssh takes -p and scp -P. -p for scp is
preservation mode. May I suggest to switch the meaning of -p and -P for
scp? I am not sure if this can be done because of path-depency problems
(ppl rely on the old behaviour). I also assume this is something that
should be fixed upstream? Thank you for considering my little
suggestion.

'/var/spool/vbox/ttyI6' both exist. The old directory will no longer be
used; please manually move any messages from there to the new directory

double-byte stuff breaks xfe. When googling for the problem, it was

that text read more like it was related to the internationalization of
the menus. Thus I file this report for xfe itself.

For people reading the BTS, my last message was intended as a private
message to Alexander. It's in German, so feel free to skip over it.

http://mentors.debian.net/debian/pool/main/i/isdnutils/isdnutils_3.9.20060704+dfsg.2-7.dsc
is what I would like to see uploaded instead. Alexander, please
supersede or remove the NMU. Thank you.

2010-11-26 Thread Rolf Leggewie
Thanks guys, for your input. There are many minefields with isdnutils.
I appreciate you pointing them out. FWIW, my Ubuntu system does not
have /dev/MAKEDEV and I want to make sure that eventually Ubuntu can
drop it's delta. As such, I will need a bit more time to look into this
issue.

Guys, I appreciate you taking isdnutils seriously. I'm happy to see the
package is still in demand and people care about it.

Alas, isdnutils is a complicated and long-neglected package. I don't
claim to understand it very well, yet. As such, I try to tread
carefully after understanding as much as possible about a certain
change. Everybody has their pet bug and would like to see it resolved
immediately. To make a long story short, I cannot definitively answer
your question, both where I am concerned and where I am not (time to
sponsorship comes to mind). Here's a couple of things that may help you
get an idea.

* I try to resolve RC bugs within about a week
* anything not RC has no definitive time-frame (including this one)
* patches are always welcome, but I may have questions or go a different
  way
* things have to be compatible with both Debian and Ubuntu
* co-maintainers and dedicated sponsors welcome
I am only DM and would hope to get DMUA set in due course
