Re: [chirp_users] Request help on using Chirp and a new radio

2019-03-08 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Download an img file from each radio and label it with the name of the
radio.

Do that first it's urgent.

The read this: https://baofengtech.com/CHIRPImport

I believe I used to export to csv file, then download the radio I wanted to
program. I'd paste from the csv file into the img file.

I think it's also possible to open up each radio, one in a different tab,
and delete all the memories in the radio you want to program and go to the
tab with the radio you want to copy and copy the cells. Go to the other
tab and paste. Save the changed img file with a different name (include
the date in the file name), then upload the file to the radio.

Don't get confused and upload the wrong img file from a different radio.
That will cause big problems.

Re: [chirp_users] Radio did not respond Baofeng UV-82

2019-03-21 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Sam,

Please do this:

ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0

Send back the output.

Also send back the output of this when you are using your user (regular)
account:

groups

It is important that you are in the group that owns /dev/ttyUSB0

I'm not using Ubuntu but Arch Linux, but here is my output to show you:

ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0
crw-rw 1 root *uucp* 188, 0 Mar 21 09:40 /dev/ttyUSB0

[djringjr@n1ea ~]$ groups
video *uucp* wheel djringjr

I've made *uucp *bold so you can see the important part.

I believe /dev/ttyUSB0 in Ubuntu is owned by root tty - don't change it!
Just make sure you are a member of whatever group that owns /dev/ttyUSB0.

Different distros handle devices slightly differently. The point is that
if you are executing CHIRP and you are not a member of the group that owns
the /dev/ttyUSB0 device, it will not work.

To add a user to a group - whatever group owns the ttyUSB0 -

sudo adduser user group

Where user is your user name and group is the group that owns ttyUSB0

Looks good, Sam. Sometimes the cable doesn't make good contact with the
radio. Push it it fairly hard.

Put a call out on the local repeater to see if anyone has a Baofeng UV-82
that they use with CHIRP. Ask them to meet you with their radio and
computer and cable.

It sounds like you have done your work with CHIRP fine.

Consult your owner's manual and find the section about displaying either
1)channel number, 2) frequency, or 3) channel name.

If you download from radio to CHIRP and see the names, they are there.

Just find the owner's manual. It will tell you,

2019-05-15 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Billy,

Please answer these questions in my yesterday's message below one by one so
we can help you.

If you're using Mac or Linux skip the questions regarding Device Manager,
but you may still get a notification if you unplug and plug back in your
USB cable. We need to know the name the notification gives you for the
location of the cable.

Most of the problems people have is they are using counterfeit chips in
inexpensive pirated USB converters under Windows which use Prolific chip
sets, or the cable physically isn't fitting into the radio sufficiently
enough and we can advise you what to do to make it fit.

We need more information from you to start helping you.

Alan,

I know very little about iMac, but I believe I found a page that has
helpful information: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201163

I've found good searching skills can find the most obscure information in a
few minutes.

Re: [chirp_users] baofeng uv5r

2019-06-08 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Hello Don,

This isn't a list for baofeng uv5r.

Also if you're a first responder, I would not use any of these
inexpensive radios because they lack one very important design
feature. All these inexpensive radios lack the ability to reject
nearby off-frequency signals, meaning that if you are at the scene of
an emergency, if someone near by is transmitting, your Baofeng UV5R
will become desensitized by the nearby transmission - could be police,
fire, or other signal and you might miss vital transmission that might
save your life.

Mail lists and FaceBook Groups for the Baofeng UV5R are listed on this page:
https://www.baofengsupport.com/forums/

Best wishes,

David N1EA

Re: [chirp_users] Transmit UV5r to FRS

2019-06-20 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
We also do not want to be accomplices in the commission of a crime.
§95.335 Operation of non-certified transmitters prohibited.

https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx?SID=513d144496fe583b1100416953ca419f&mc=true&node=se47.5.95_1335&rgn=div8

GMRS and FRS regulations have changed, but unlicensed FRS does not permit
any radio that has a removable antenna. Also radios have to be certified
under FCC Part 95. UV-5R isn't on the list, and FCC is planning on banning
the import of any radio capable of being used on a frequency that the unit
is not licensed for. That is if it isn't an amateur radio, in the future
any radio imported will only be able to be used on amateur radio
frequencies.

Also in the near future, radios will not be legally allowed to be
manufactured, imported , or sold that can be used on BOTH GMRS and FRS.
This is going to cause a problem for licensed amateur radio operators who
own such radios, like I do:
§95.1791 Sales of GMRS/FRS combination radios prohibited.

(a) Effective September 30, 2019, no person shall be permitted to
manufacture or import, sell or offer for sale any radio equipment capable
of operating under both this subpart (GMRS) and subpart B (FRS) of this
chapter.

FRS allows 2 watts or less on channels 1 – 7 and the previously GMRS only
channels of 15 – 22, but only 0.5 watts on channels 8 – 14.
GMRS licensees can use up to 50 watts, but there are somewhat complicated
restrictions and an FCC 10 year renewable license (good for entire family)
is needed. GMRS licensees can also operate on 8 additional repeater
frequencies.

The regulations for GMRS are quite complicated.
https://ecfr.io/Title-47/se47.5.95_11767

I think the past practice of this group not to provide such information to
unlicensed persons is a wise one.

Good news, Dan - for Windows users that is.

Gnumeric is now available for Windows 10.

If you want some software that's fast, I recommend Gnumeric and Abiword.
Very small size programs but do what most people need to do, and they work
very fast.

Hmmm, just like CHIRP. Fast and useful.

Re: [chirp_users] Chirp under Linux

2019-12-22 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Phil,

Someone gave you this command, but they forgot to start it with "sudo" and
if you didn't use sudo the command will not work.

sudo chmod 777 /dev/ttyUSB0

Check the ownership of this:

ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0

This will list the owners of /dev/ttyUSB0.

See if you're in the group that is listed.

Enter this command:

groups

It will return the groups your a member of. You have to belong to the
group that is listed when you gave the command: ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0

If you disconnect the USB cable then reconnect it. You can confirm the
device name by this command:

sudo dmesg | tail

You should see lines that says "new device" and it will give the address of
the new device, that's the device CHIRP needs to use in order to work .

Try that,

I use chirp-daily it's always the latest version because I don't want to

Don't upgrade just some of the files unless you have a good reason.

Send us the output of the command:

It should include dialout in that line as /dev/ttyUSB0 belongs to users in

Re: [chirp_users] Having troubles

2020-02-26 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Jim's recommendation to use the gui is a good one. Often the way
Linux commands are written is very confusing. I think this is what is
happening.

As root, check who owns /dev/ttyUSB0.

It should say root:dialout - if its something other than dialout, you
have to be in that group.

sudo ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0\\

Does it say root:dialout? If so go to next step, if it doesn't write
an email to the group.

Now let's add user holmzie to the dialout group, we have to do that as root.

sudo usermod -a -G dialout holmzie

If it says usermod command isn't installed, install it.

Otherwise, if no errors, reboot and then type groups in terminal and
you should have dialout in the results.

At the user prompt type:
groups

My system - which is different that yours, responds:
users lp floppy dialout audio video cdrom plugdev power netdev scanner sudo

But you will see dialout there.

Re: [chirp_users] Permissions for serial device under Linux

2020-02-27 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Hello Pat,

Please send the results as your user account of these commands in
Terminal before doing any chmod:

groups

ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0

Then do your chmod command - send the command as well, and send the
results of ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0 again.

See if we can figure out what is going on.
Thank you,

Re: [chirp_users] Permissions for serial device under Linux

2020-02-27 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Hello Nigel,

Different Linux distributions put tty connections in different groups.

ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0

Will always tell you which group owns the device.

Just add your user that that group and it will work.

Re: [chirp_users] copying from BF 3TP to BF GT-5TP

2020-02-27 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
You cannot do that.

Plug in the radio, download from the radio. Save the image file in case
something breaks.

Same thing with a different radio, give the file a different name, like
John Smith's BF3TP. Save that file. Never assume same model radios are 100%
comparable. NEVER!

Export the frequency list you want to copy as a spreadsheet csv file. Say
it's the BF3TP, export as CSV.

Use LibreOffice to open it up in LibreOffice Calc. Microsoft Office will
NOT work.

Read up on how to transfer frequencies from one model to another, it's done
via the csv spreadsheets. Consider ALL img files to be incompatable. I
don't have the instructions in front of me, but I needed to tell you you
cannot directly do what you are saying, you have to use CSV files and
LibreOffice Calc.

Re: [chirp_users] Replying to the list with a new

2020-03-31 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
David,

Administrators can set the lists up so that replies go to the author, or to
the list, or both, or "user decides" - moments ago I just set my
googlegroups list to "user decides" because if I don't set it that way the
author's email address is hidden - even from me - the list owner!

Email lists are strange. Gmail doesn't send you back your own posts, which
was the original setting "way" back in 1980s when everyone was on a 300
baud modem and phone lines. Conserve valuable bandwidth in those days. Now
sending you your own message takes a few milliseconds.

I still use mutt and thunderbird, both have "bounce" functions because
sometimes my list subscribers think they have to send their emails to me
for forwarding to the list. Bouncing an email makes it look like it was
sent by the original sender to the final addressee - which in my case is
always the email list, but it can be abused to fool people, Person A sends
me and email, I bounce it to Person B and Person B thinks it was sent
directly from Person A. You can see it came through me if you look at the
headers.

I did have my email list set up that way in 1994 when I started that list
as a "one way" email list. Finally when google announced it was doing free
lists, I jumped at the chance. I also printed newsletters using a
Commodore 64 and GeoPublish - wow that's going back some.

I searched with google and I can't find anything that does.

[chirp_users] Using Python 2 and Python 3 in Linux

2020-05-18 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Various versions of Python can be used in Linux.

These instructions were for Slackware, but I suppose they work well in
other distributions.

Install pyenv as root:
1. cd /root
2. curl -L
https://github.com/pyenv/pyenv-installer/raw/master/bin/pyenv-installer |
bash

update your .bashrc (or create it if not exists) and add this:

export PATH="$HOME/.pyenv/bin:$PATH"
eval "$(pyenv init -)"
eval "$(pyenv virtualenv-init -)"

load the new .bashrc with source .bashrc

now install the python version that you want like:

pyenv install 3.7.2 (you can have multiple versions installed at the same
time)
(you can check for the available versions with: pyenv install --list)

Switch to the new version with:

pyenv global 3.7.2 and run slpkg.
When you finish with it you can switch back to your original python with:

pyenv global system

And finaly check for the available python versions in your system with:

pyenv versions (the first 'system' means the python that is installed by
your system)

For example this is from mine:

root@lab:~# pyenv versions
  system
  3.1.2
  3.5.5
* 3.7.2 (set by /root/.pyenv/version)

References: https://github.com/pyenv/pyenv

It seems that pyenv only reports the python versions installed into it.

My system python is: Python 2.7.17

[chirp_users] Pyenv and CHIRP

2020-05-20 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Hi CHIRPers,

I was going to submit something about pyenv separately but I mentioned it
in a post about Ubuntu current.

The application pyenv which allows using specific versions with certain
programs.

I'm trying to get that very program working to allow me to use python 3.7
on a distro SLINT (Slackware) that only has python 2.7. I've gotten pyenv
working nicely, but I'm having problems installing slpkg a new unofficial
package installer.

Haven't mastered yet, but I'm stubborn.

I'm sure the devs know other means to keep CHIRP working but I just heard
of this, it gives a particular program the python environment it needs and
a shortcut with environmental settings can be put in ,profile file.

Re: [chirp_users] Fw: No USB Port Error

2020-06-02 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Glen,

With the USB device plugged in, use a terminal and enter this:

lsusb

Carefully check the names of the devices. Is it really /dev/USB1 ?

Remember Unix / Linux is case sensitive, /dev/USB1 is NOT /dev/usb1 which
is a normal device name.

Let's assume you made an error and the device is ttyUSB1.

In terminal:
ls -l /dev/ttyUSB1

Pay attention to the group this device belongs, to. The owner will be root.

You need to be in the same group to access it.

Find out what groups your user account is in by the command "groups."

In terminal enter:

groups

Is the group that ttyUSB1 belongs to listed as one of your groups? If not
you have to add your user to that group using the root account.

Best wishes,

David

Re: [chirp_users] Fw: No USB Port Error

2020-06-02 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
In your message you said:

"he found the device in his case, on USB1."

That's not a complete location, give the complete path.

We have to guess what you mean which is unsatisfactory when it comes to
computers which are always exactly literal.

Since you're taking about a tty device it's probably ls -l /dev/ttyUSB1 but
next time you reboot it might go back to ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0 which is the
usual assignment but your computer will go to ls -l /dev/ttyUSB1 if it
still thinks ls -l /dev/ttyUSB0 is being used (occupied).

You probably did. Glenn, but i can't find it.

If you would send the output of:

ls -l /dev/USB1

AND

udevadm info -a -p $(udevadm info -q path -n /dev/ttyUSB1)

Thank you,

Re: [chirp_users] Retevis 22 programming question

2020-06-18 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Rebecca,

I don't even know how you've done what I think you're saying you did.
Motorola VX261 isn't supported by CHIRP. How did you do this?

Please read the GUIDE here:
https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Beginners_Guide

I would first save an img file before using CHIRP so that if a problem
develops, you upload that file to your radio and revert to original factory
settings.

With 22 radios, being the cautious type, I would make 22 img files and
temporarily label each radio - if they have serial numbers, that would be a
good thing to note on the file name of the img file you down from the
radio. Then I'd check to see if each img file agrees exactly with the
others, some manufacturers have switched firmware and the different
firmware radios img files differ and are NOT compatible. Of course,
sometimes they are. I'd run a MD5SUM byte check of the files.

If you're running Windows, there is a md5 program here:
https://www.winmd5.com/ You should check each img file that you download,
and see that the md5sum computation is the same,

It's a pain to do 22 radios, but if the img files are not the same, you
might run into incompatibility problems including making a radio
non-functioning (dead, or bricked.)

There is a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) article here:
https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/FAQ

In the FAQ it says there's a way to add your group's frequencies:

*Can I add new stock configurations?*
Yes! Adding your group's frequency plan to the stock configurations can
make it very quick and easy to program new radios. Further, putting various
configurations into the stock list can make switching your radio between
multiple functions or geographical regions easy. Simply save a CSV file
into the stock configurations directory and restart CHIRP to have it show
up in the list. On windows, go to Start -> Run and type:

APPDATA\CHIRP\stock_configs

On MacOS or Linux, the path is:

~/.chirp/stock_configs

I would do that if I had to program 22 radios, and if the frequency lists
changed, I'd change that file and use that file as the stock frequency
list. It's a way some people use to program many different type radios for
frequencies used by various organizations like amateur radio clubs where
members each have their different type radio.

Best wishes in your efforts,

David N1EA

Re: [chirp_users] Alinco DJ-VX50T

2020-08-27 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
First you have to put in a request to have that model covered by CHIRP,
then one of the developers had to volunteer to add coverage for that model,
then the developer contacts you for the loan, when he receives the radio,
he can start working on developing support for it.

The time depends on volunteer developer's time availability, his ability to
discover how the radio programming is implemented in the particular radio,
how he can implement it in CHIRP, time for testing, then a BETA release of
the module and if it works without any problems, a merge request to add it
to CHIRP.

Start the ball rolling by putting in a request and be sure to answer if
you'd be willing to loan your transceiver.

As you can see a loan is needed except in the unlikely event that one of
the developers has the same model radio.

Best wishes,

David

Re: [chirp_users] Yaesu FT8900R Cloning

2020-09-07 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Sorry, you select the COM port that connects to your USB device.

You have a USB to serial COM port adapter and it connects to your computer.
If you unplug it, you can see the COM port disappear when you unplug the
USB cable, plug it back in, and make note of the COM port used.

Sorry, I goofed on the answer,

Re: [chirp_users] Question

Please send in the error messages are there any?

I would do this, download
https://mirror.math.princeton.edu/pub/ubuntu-iso/groovy/ubuntu-20.10-desktop-amd64.iso
and burn it to at least 4 GB or larger USB stick using etcher
https://www.balena.io/etcher/

Boot from the installation.

Using terminal - enter this:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install chirp-daily

Then run chirp-daily either in the terminal or you'll find it on the menu.

Messing with counterfeit chips on cables and Windows security measures of
updating drivers which don't work for your older cables - the fake ones -
and the lack of error messages are big time consumers.

Download the live Ubuntu and use chirp there.

2020-12-30 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Rich,

Inside CHIRP you can access under the Menu, the RADIO menu, and under it,
"Query Data Sources" and then "Repeater Book."

If you are in Europe - I believe you might have said your in the UK, you
can use the Data Source prezmieniki.net which lists many EU
countries including UK.

rfinder which offered world-wide service (not just USA / Canada and Europe)
either is having web server problems or has shut down.
http://rfinder.net is their web site, and there is a link inside CHIRP but
you have to have a username (email) and password first.

Mine doesn't work at the moment, so I suspect that website is gone.

You can download these, and you can copy from the download and paste to
your downloaded channel grid that you obtained by downloading
from your radio.

REMEMBER - download from your radio and SAVE the file as an img file so you
can restore the factory settings if something goes horribly
wrong. If you have google drive or dropbox, upload it to that archive, the
file is THAT important.

Hello Rich,

I checked and the BTECH UV-5X3

No manual is available. Since the frequency range for reception is
not specified and you cannot receive NOAA broadcasts, I would strongly
suspect that those frequencies are NOT supported.

Maybe they will be supported someday in updated firmware.

I was going to chide you for asking so many product specific
questions, but now I see why you are doing so, the product
specification sheet and owner's manual are simply unavailable. That's
certainly forgivable. I'd ask too!

Contact the distributor and see if they can get an owner's manual for
you, the transceiver appears to be so new it is not available on the
Internet.

daily-20201221 on Linux - Debian GNU/Linux 10 (Python 2.7.16) but I cannot
upload.

I get the following error message.

ERROR:
ERROR: Clone failed: Failed to communicate with radio: Radio did not ack

Any suggestions?

Bernhard,

This is a problem only for writing, not reading from radio.

Doesn't make sense to me.

Re: [chirp_users] Yaesu FT-897D Upload Error

2021-01-03 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
I found the problem.

Advice on the screen when uploading says click "OK" then click "send" on
the FT-897D screen, then a sending progress bar appears.

However when downloading from CHIRP it doesn't have that instruction.

It just says click "receive" on the FT-897D screen.

I just repeated the first sequence I had done moments ago. That's where it
failed.

What I had to do was:

Click "receive" on the FT-897D screen.
Then click the dialog box "OK" on the computer screen.
Then screen changes to a "receiving" progress bar.

It will fail if you click the computer dialogue box "OK" before you click
"receive" on the FT-897D screen.

Maybe improved language would help here.

I knew it wasn't the cable connections if I could upload, but download
failed moments later with nothing changed with my setup.

Re: [chirp_users] Recommended radio for adding to chirp

2021-02-22 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Eric and Discussion of CHIRP,

For those who have vision problems including blindness, I heartily
recommend SLINT based on Slackware. SLINT stands for SLackware
INTernational and it supports many languages and it is the most accessible
distribution I know of. There are several speech systems supported, and
IBM Text to Speech - VOXIN - is supported even though VOXIN must be
purchased for $5.00 per language from oralux.org a non-profit group.

CHIRP and other ham radio programs are available for SLINT. I'm using
SLINT right now.

Re: [chirp_users] I get an "unknown file format" when importing

2021-03-23 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
If I'm not mistaken, there was an issue of Microsoft Excel not editing
the csv files correctly and when opening such a file up and saving it
again, it introduced errors.

Such errors did NOT occur with the use of LibreOffice (or OpenOffice)
which is available for Windows, Mac OX-X, and Linux.

OpenOffice download: https://www.openoffice.org/download/
LibreOffice download: https://www.libreoffice.org/download/download/
(currently out of order)
LibreOffice download:
http://mirror.internode.on.net/pub/libreoffice/stable/7.1.1/

If Microsoft Excel no longer introduces errors, someone please correct me.

[chirp_users] Debian Chirp Daily

2021-03-31 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Hello List,

I'm confused.

I have added the sources for Chirp daily snapshot to Debian Stable.

I install chirp.

I ask chirpw --version and I get:
CHIRP daily-20201221 on Linux - Debian GNU/Linux 10 (Python 2.7.16)

when I try to install again,

wajig install chirp-daily

install chirp-daily
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
chirp-daily is already the newest version (20210310~xenial~1).

How do I get the newest chirp?

How to I get rid of it? Normal ways of using flatpak to uninstall don't

Re: [chirp_users] Help with "Baofeng UV-5R A3" HT

2021-04-05 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
The only tri-band Baofeng that is supported that I can find is UV-RX3.

   - UV-5RX3 *(use Radioddity UV-5RX3)*

Try the Radioddity UV-5RX3 and see if you can download an img file, if so
save it so you have something to go back to if you need to re-image the
radio.

Best wishes,

Re: [chirp_users] Debian Chirp Daily

2021-04-05 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Still working on getting a current version of CHIRP on Debian Stable.

Here's the latest.

flatpak uninstall chirp
Found installed ref ‘app/com.danplanet.chirp/x86_64/master’ (system). Is
this correct?
[Y/n]: y
error: Remote "chirp-origin" not found

I have tried to install (or reinstall) chirp using flatpak and I've been
confused and unfulfilled.

I did find this script on this page
https://piratesinteepees.org/installing-chirp-in-ubuntu-20-04/

#

#!/bin/bash
#
#
# This script updats chirp flatpak to latest daily build
# Add this to root's crontab for automatic updates
# If run as standard user, you will get a popop asking for admin password
#
#
#Make download folder if doesn't exist
mkdir -p ~/Downloads/ChirpFP
#Move to Download folder
cd ~/Downloads/ChirpFP
#Remove previously downloaded flatpaks
rm *.flatpak
#Pull link from download page and download latest flatpak
wget `lynx -dump https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/ | awk
'/http/{print $2}' | grep flatpak`
#Install the file
flatpak install -y --noninteractive *.flatpak

#

I tried it, but alas, I still get the cryptic error: Remote "chirp-origin"
not found

I am still confused and lost.

Does anyone know how I can uninstall what seems to be a flatpak
installation on Debian?

If I try to update, I receive this error.

$ flatpak update
Looking for updates…
Unable to update app/com.danplanet.chirp/x86_64/master: Remote
"chirp-origin" not found

Best wishes,

The Baofeng UV-82 doesn't use "codeplugs" as it is an analog radio, also
CHIRP isn't for digital radios, just analog.

Michal are you using the incorrect terminology, or are you talking about a
different model which IS digital?

[chirp_users] Fail Install CHIRP on Slackware

2021-05-09 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Hello Discussion,

Running SLINT, Slackware International, based on Slackware 14.2.

I cannot install chirp because there is no libxml2mod.

ImportError: No module named libxml2mod
fakeroot -- sh chirp.SlackBuild Failed

Full errors:

I don't know who works on the slackware build of chirp.

Re: [chirp_users] Fail Install CHIRP on Slackware

2021-05-09 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
I found a new package which somehow didn't automatically install when
upgrading.

https://slackware.pkgs.org/14.2/slackware-x86_64/libxml2-2.9.4-x86_64-2.txz.html

I use /tmp in root file space to install such programs.

su -
give root password

# cd /tmp

Using wget to get the new files.

wget
https://slackware.uk/slackware/slackware64-14.2/slackware64/l/libxml2-2.9.4-x86_64-2.txz

Then I upgrade the existing package.

upgradepkg --install-new libxml2-2.9.4-x86_64-2.txz

Then I install chirp.

spi --install chirp

Installing new package ./chirp-20201128-x86_64-1_SBo.txz

Then I run chirpw and chirp works. It does nag me about a newer version
being available, but I ignored that message and I'll wait for it to appear
in the Slackware repository.

Problem solved!

Re: [chirp_users] using chirp for first time.

2021-06-04 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Please say which operating system, you are using.

If you're using Windows, usually the problem is your USB cable uses a
counterfeit chip and Windows automatically upgrades the driver which then
will no longer work for counterfeit chips. Check "Device Manager" to see if
you have unrecognized USB serial port devices, if you do "roll back the
driver" and it should work at least temporarily. (Cure is to buy a USB to
serial port device with FTDI chip set like this one:

Re: [chirp_users] win 10 install

2021-08-25 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Don,

There is NO registration!

Read the instructions! You have to download from the radio first before you
do anything. Save that img file as insurance so you can go back to it.

Once you have downloaded from the radio, THEN you can edit memories or use
one of the menu items to query a data base for repeater frequencies.

Save the file, I recommend the format year month day hyphen radio model dot
ing.

20120825-ft897d.img

You can also export to spreadsheet (use openoffice or libreoffice as
Microsoft Spreadsheet program introduces errors. Save this and use it to
import into another radio's img file. CAUTION: Chinese radios with the
same model number often have incompatable firmware versions so you can't
just use another radio's img file with a radio of the same model.

Best wishes,

David

Hello Chris,

It seems that radio doesn't cover that frequency range:

FRQ.: V:TX:144-148

RX:137-174MHz
RX:400-512MH

It may look like the same radio but the frequency range is different.

[chirp_users] CHIRP under Debian Linux

2021-09-08 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Unfortunately, CHIRP under Slackware on my wonderful SLINT.fr installation
variety is failing to work.

I prefer to run Debian because it has many more CLI - Command Line
Interface - programs than Ubuntu.

Does anyone have a proven method of adding repositories to the
/etc/apt/sources.list in Debian Sid?

With hopeful wishes, I remain, respectfully yours.

That helps!

This page:

https://chirp.danplanet.com/projects/chirp/wiki/Running_Under_Linux

had:

sudo apt-add-repository ppa:dansmith/chirp-snapshots

Which is a different PPA.

Maybe the gpredict-team PPA should be given instead?

Nigel,

How do I get rid of this error?

W: GPG error: http://ppa.launchpad.net/gpredict-team/ppa/ubuntu bionic

key is not available: NO_PUBKEY BC6CFD5BAF1773BB

Re: [chirp_users] CHIRP under Debian Linux

2021-09-08 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
To summarize installing Chirp using flatpak in Debian:

If you are using GNOME Desktop environment, install the Software Flatpak
plugin:

[as root:] apt update | apt install gnome-software-plugin-flatpak

Non-GNOME Desktop Environments:

For Debian Buster and newer (including Bullseye and Sid):
A flatpak package is available. To install it, run the following as root:

apt install flatpak

For Debian Jessie and Stretch:
A flatpak package is available in the official backports repository;
Too add this repository (if it's not alreay there):

Add using root to your /etc/apt/sources.list file this line:
deb http://deb.debian.org/debian buster-backports main

Now update and install flatpak:

[as root:] apt update | apt upgrade | apt install flatpak

Now you have to REBOOT or at least log out and back in.

You have to download the Chirp flatpak from the Chirp download page and
then install with

So do this:

Go to https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/

Find the latest which of today is:
https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/chirp-daily-20210830.flatpak

Save that to ~/Downloads, then:

cd ~/Downloads

sudo flatpak install chirp-daily-20210830.flatpak

And everything works.

Thanks Nigel,

Re: [chirp_users] not understanding the com port.

2021-09-11 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Tom,

Long list /dev/tty*

$ ls -l /dev/tty*

See what groups the various tty devices belong to.

In Debian, all the tty's belong to the tty group, EXCEPT the /dev/ttyS*.

$ ls -l /dev/ttyS*

Those tty devices belong to the "dialout" group instead, your Fedora might
be the same or different.

See what groups your user is a member of:

$ groups

Your user MUST be a member of the groups that the /dev/tty* and
/dev/dev/ttyS* belong to.

In my case it is both "tty" and "dialout", yours might be the same or
different, just follow the Fedora procedure to add your user to the needed
groups.

Also check that your user has read and write privledges for the tty you
will use, if not chmod the group of tty's to make that happem.

Re: [chirp_users] IMG file format

2021-10-05 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Eric,

The IMG files are like photographic snapshots of the radio's memory
channels, they are unique to each version AND model of a manufacturer's
transceiver.

CHIRP works with this unique file type which is why it is extremely
important to upon the first time using CHIRP to download the IMG from your
transceiver, save and safeguard it from loss. You can use this unique IMG
file to restore your transceiver to factory settings which is especially
important if user error causes your transceiver to be unresponsive, or
"bricked".

Each model and make of transceiver has a unique IMG file.

Your question shows a lack of understanding of how CHIRP works, please read
the documentation and follow the instructions!

Failure to do so may result in irreversible injury to your radio equipment.

If this happens, contact this list for possible restoration measures using
someone else's IMG file.

Best wishes,

David N1EA

Re: [chirp_users] IMG file format

2021-10-05 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
I'm sorry it came off like that, it wasn't meant that way, I usually answer
questions with a lot of understanding, probably I didn't do as well this
time, for that and for any offense I inadvertently made I apologize.

No harshness was meant, if such came across, it was my regrettable choice
of words.

If you spoke to me that wouldn't come across, written communications is
lacking in nuance or at least good writers, and in this, I have failed this
time.

To the original poster, I am sorry if my message seemed harsh, it was
supposed to be a URGENT warning to not hurt your radio, not meant to hurt
your feelings, or convey a lack of support from me or more importantly,
this list. I think the urgency of my warning to protect your radio from
harm got in the way of my otherwise better explanation and expression,
again my apologies.

Best regards,

Agreed, a very worthy project, perhaps it can be posted as a development
feature, especially if you would be willing to let others develop it with
you, everyone might find it very useful in maintaining CHIRP and supporting
the many transceivers it works with.

Re: [chirp_users] Can't transmit freqs above 147.975

2021-10-05 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
The highest repeater frequency is: 147.390 with an input (you transmit on)
frequency of 147.990.
Can you program that frequency in? Put in 147.390 with a positive shift of
600 kHz so that you transmit on 147.990 - that's the highest frequency
allowed - anything higher would be "out of band". If that is possible,
there's no problem at all.

Transmitting on 148.000 with ANY mode would be a violation of law as even 1
Hz of bandwidth puts your transmissions out of band.

Re: [chirp_users] Yaesu FT-817ND (US) download / upload issues

2021-12-14 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Hello Mr. McCee, KC1HLD,

I understand from our off list emails that you're using Windows. I
don't know where the error files are recorded for CHIRP in Windows,
perhaps one of the list members more familiar with Windows can give
you a clue.

I think I might have some help to get us in the right direction to
help you though, here's what I have.

Here's what I just sent you privately but for the benefit of the list
and the list archives.

There is a note for CHIRP:

Newer Yaseu HTs (FT-4, FT-65, FT-25) do not need to be placed into
clone mode manually. CHIRP can put the radio into clone mode and can
also operate if the radio is already in clone mode, e.g., if you first
download from the radio, then modify your setting in CHIRP, and then
upload back to the radio. CHIRP cannot command the radio to leave
clone mode, so you must power the radio off after the CHIRP session.

This reminds us that older radios have to go through the whole
sequence of entering clone mode again, unlike the newer models which
you you don't even have to enter clone mode, you - with the newer
models - can download the img file from the radio, then modify it,
then upload the changed img file to the radio.

You cannot do this with the older radios such as yours. You have to
download - which you've done - in one sequence. Then power the radio
off, and initiate the clone mode sequence again, and this time upload
the modified (and saved) file to the radio.

VK3BQ perhaps gives us a hint.

http://www.vk3bq.com/2013/10/18/chirp-and-the-ft817nd/

A trap for young players with the 817 and chirp. You need to do two
steps to get the radio to talk to the computer

Power on the radio while holding down both MODE < > buttons, The radio
will beep three times and show “CLONE MODE” on the display.

Set CHIRP up to download the radio image from the menu, then on the
radio, press button “A” and the radio will start TX’ing data, and you
have a copy of the radio memories. Program up the radio in chirp with
your repeaters and other parameter settings and save a copy. To load
the new memories/file into the radio, power on the radio as per above
and enter “CLONE MODE” again, Set CHIRP to upload to radio and then
press the “C” button on the Radio, the device will change to RX mode
and receive the new configuration. The instructions are on page 69 of
the 817nd (2011) manual under Cloning.

Re: [chirp_users] Yaesu FT-817ND (US) download / upload issues

2021-12-14 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Download from your radio then using the menu, export as a csv file and send
the csv file.

Were you ever able to upload to the Yaesu FT-817ND?

Do you have a copy of the unmodified img file that you downloaded from your
radio before you used any type of software to modify the memories?

Perhaps your img file got corrupted. That's why CHIRP strongly suggests
keeping an unmodified img file of your radio.

Open your current img file in CHIRP and export it in csv format.

Do NOT use Microsoft Excel to edit that file, it will produce errors. Use
libre office or open office instead. No errors with those.

Take your unmodified img file from where you saved it and upload it to your
radio.

Does that work without error?

Re: [chirp_users] Yaesu FT-5D

2021-12-19 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Jeff,

The issue you posted says "equipment loan not offered".

Until someone either offers a loan to the development team, or someone buys
and gives a radio to the development team, nothing can be done.

Even when equipment is offered for loan, a developer has to be interested
in the project to volunteer. This can take months or even years.

I have a feeling that an offer to buy the radio for a developer would get
them VERY interested in supporting development for this radio.

Remember this is a totally community effort that is given away to users
without charge.

Have you thought about volunteering the loan of your radio?

Best wishes,

Re: [chirp_users] Yaesu FT-5D

2021-12-19 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
Jeff,

No progress can be made until a volunteer has offered to loan a radio.

That's the best answer that can be given.

Also many radios, especially those that are not extremely popular take
years if they even finally get supported at all.

Ken N2VIP says the coding process is much shorter than "years", and that is
true, but getting someone to take the development of code sometimes takes
years, but after someone volunteers, it usually goes quite quickly.

I have no problem with it taking years, this is a volunteer project, I and
several others proposed the Wouxun KG-UV8E in 2016, and we were overjoyed
when a developer took it and made it work with CHIRP, some of the delay was
finding someone who had a loaner radio who would be able to ship the radio
to the developer who was located in Cuba, USA still has an embargo with
that island nation, so a volunteer from Canada actually arranged for the
radio to be hand delivered in airplane luggage to the developer. That's
first class service.

But things cannot move until a volunteer radio is offered.

Also I just looked up the FT5DR and it seems to C4FM radio, and unless my
memory is unreliable, digital radios as a class aren't supported by CHIRP.

I hope someone of the developers can comment on that, I didn't realize it
was a C4FM radio in the beginning.

Excellent, I didn't remember correctly, I'm really happy about that, now I
hope someone who has the radio is willing to volunteer the radio.

Sometimes it is easier to look at the radios supported by CHIRP and buying
one of those. I do that with printers and scanners for use under Linux.

Great news!

Your download from the radio has only the tone modes supported by the
radio. CHIRP supports many more.

Re: [chirp_users] Installing To Linux

2022-02-05 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
K0LNY, Then just reinstall the latest LTS Ubuntu.

With reinstallation you won't break orca or accessibility.

Even better, install SLINT based in Slackware which has excellent
accessibility features and a version of orca based on the most current
version. I can guarantee it works.

Have you tried installing flatpak on your version of Ubuntu?

install flatpak with sudo apt-get install flatpak then run this command:
flatpak remote-add flathub https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

Then run:

flatpak install
https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/chirp-daily-20220202.flatpak

You should see chirp under Network in the menu.

But really the best thing to do is upgrade your distro. I completely
recommend SLINT https://slint.fr/wiki/doku.php?id=:en:start

But you might want to wait a week or so because Slackware 15 has just been
released.

The instructions for installing CHIRP are the same, install using flatpak,

SLINT is by far the most accessible, most up to date versions of orca and
brltty, three types of text mode screen readers. Emacspeak comes
preconfigured with the built in option of using a inexpensively purchased
IBM Text to Speech module from voxin.org. SLINT is generally a full version
ahead of even Debian when it comes to accessibility.

Re: [chirp_users] devuan/debian flatpak install issue

2022-03-03 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
The syntax is incorrect for files not in the $PATH, you have to give
the full path in the command, or if you are in the=20
same directory, you have to proceed the file name with a period then a
slash that is "./".

Thus the command you should give is:

sudo flatpak install ./chirp-daily-20220219.flatpak

Incidentally, your gpg signature seems to have a problem.

[-- Begin signature information --]
Problem signature from: KeyID 26A43C6DDBA6EDA63F4EF806EF2AED0D55BBCEC8
created: Thu 03 Mar 2022 12:12:54 PM EST
Can't verify due to a missing key or certificate

I tried to find your key on one of the servers, but I could not.

For others wishing to use flatpak, there are initial setup procedures here.
https://flatpak.org/setup/

Click on the distro's icon and get specific instructions such as
Debian instructions.

Re: [chirp_users] devuan/debian flatpak install issue

2022-03-03 Thread D.J.J. Ring, Jr.
When installing flatpak, you have to add the fllatpak repository. As
regular use issue this command.

flatpak remote-add --if-not-exists flathub
https://flathub.org/repo/flathub.flatpakrepo

In terminal, change directory to Downloads, then make a tmp folder (directory).
cd Downloads
mkdir tmp

Then change directory into ~/Downloads/tmp and download the latest
chirp flatpak.

cd ~/Downloads/tmp/

wget
https://trac.chirp.danplanet.com/chirp_daily/LATEST/chirp-daily-20220219.flatpak

After the file is downloaded, issue this command in that directory.

sudo flatpak install ./chirp-daily-20220219.flatpak

You should have no errors, but you will have to reboot to run chirp.

Best wishes,
