Technically, gmail does not have any folders except for all mail. When a
message is moved, copied, or deleted, gmail places a flag on the message. If a
message is copied into multiple folders, gmail places multiple tags on the
message. When a message is moved to trash / deleted, gmail places a trash flag
on the message. Any trash flag that is over a month old is automatically
deleted (I am not yet sure if the one month rule is based on the date of the
message or the date of the flag). Note: If the automatically archive deleted
messages box is not unchecked in preferences, gmail puts a permanent archive
flag rather than permanently deleting the message once the month ends.
