Archiving just takes the messages out of your inbox and stores them until you delete them manually. as far as I'm aware, Google Mail's trash folder gets dumped every month or so, but I'm not sure about this. If you have IMAP set up on your device or computer, putting items in the trash on that device is the same as putting them in the trash mailbox remotely.
