Well, like Alex suggested, you can create a new gmail account and just set it up to forward your mail to it. This might be a little bit of a pain in the neck, but it is a temporary solution you can reverse when the problems are fixed.
Or, again, install ML on an external disk and use that solely for mail until the next version of Mavericks, 10.9.2, is released. This is exactly why I always keep a functioning version of the previous OS available on external partitions. I have them going back to Snow Leopard, in fact. Take Care John D.
