Hi Brian,
A few things here.
firstly, I understand frustrations and annoyances that get to someone at times.
However, remember to put things into perspective. I have had no issues like
your experiencing on any of my three Macs and the only couple of people I know
having mail issues have the common denominator as Gmail being part of the
problem. So, to say that you can't recommend Macs because of inconsistencies
is quite drastic. You are dealing with a situation that is either system
specific or gmail specific. That has little to do with the overall experience
of Mavericks most people are having. No, Mavericks isn't perfect, but it ain't
Windows Vista or Windows 8 either by any stretch.
Now, with that said, I would do one of 3 things.
1. If you have an external drive to play with, install a completely clean
version of Mavericks onto a blank partition. Then, set up your Gmail account
first and see how it runs. If it is all right, then try adding things to that
install and see what happens. If you find that that install runs in a stable
environment, then you probably want to do a clean install on your regular
system disk. If you still have problems, well guess what? It's not the Mac or
Mavericks, but, instead, is gmail or some configuration of gmail you have set
up.
2. If you don't have an external drive, you still might want to just do a clean
install anyway. I'm a big believer in clean installs for any new operating
system.
3. If the Mail is your biggest problem and suggestion 1 is either not possible
or just not practical with your schedule, as I know you are quite busy,, you
could install Mountain Lion on an external drive to do mail and then use
Mavericks to access Numbers and Pages.
The first alternative will give you the ability to mess with gmail, at
least.
