“There's also risk of theft with Diesel to worry about. “ That is a huge
reason for no diesel generators at unattended sites.

If it's a large quantity of diesel fuel, I have heard there are companies that
will come out and filter/clean it on site refresh the additives and leave you
good to go for another however long it takes for that to happen.
That and cold weather performance are why we've done natural gas and propane
for our backup generators. There's also risk of theft with Diesel to worry
about.

Reminds me of one of my Dad's stories. He worked on HVAC controls at Cornell
University. During a planned power outage they rolled out a huge diesel
generator from storage to power up one of the buildings and couldn't get it to
stay running. Being a former Navy Fireman (which, for historical reasons is
what they called the engine room technicians) he was well aware of algae in
diesel fuel and advised the electricians to check the fuel filter. Sure enough
the fuel filter was clogged with that crud.

I'm not sure what your final recourse is when that's happened. Do you just
keep cleaning the fuel filter while you burn off the tank and then add clean
fuel with algaecide? Or do you have to do something to clean out the tank?

I didn’t think about the possibility of a buried fuel tank. I know the
generator is inside the prefab concrete building, with an equipment side and a
generator side separated by a firewall. I haven’t been inside, I just assumed
the fuel tank was by the generator.

I have been seeing outdoor commercial Generacs sitting on top of what looks
like a black steel riser but it’s a diesel tank.

I would guess the tank is underground, but I really don't know. The shelters
I've been in didn't have a tank inside.

From what I gather from the climbers and with the rate of changing equipment
out, the site owners are having the tower climbers take pictures/check the site
regularly so they aren't paying for two trips.

Is that why I see the Verizon cellsites with a diesel generator but the

periodically and service the HVAC system, I’ve seen guys there doing something
with the fuel probably Chuck’s anti-critter additive?

Because when it's -10F diesel doesn't have issues?

I believe I calculated needing three 1000 gallon tanks as -10F or
something goofy like that to get enough vapor flow. Other option was a
propane vaporizer that burned propane to vaporize liquid.

Yeah, just went with a diesel base tank.

Or insuffient vapor pressure in the cold tank? Noting that
vaporization will make the tank contents even colder.

"For reference, this past year I’ve been charged $4.90/gal
and $1.15/lb at two different local places to refill 20 and 30 lb portable
tanks."

That is like quoting the cost of electricity based on what it
costs at a DC fast charger. Has more to do with delivery costs to move it into
your tank than it has to do with the cost of propane which is like sub $2 a gal
in MN right now.
