That's unusual. I would not recommend to use SCSI IDs 0 and 7 at all.
But if this is the only way for you, who knows why ?

Maybe the value of status_loc tells what was wrong: unsupported,
invalid, io-error, permission denied.
Before changing the depth you may need to change the scan mode to Color.

I just changed to openSUSE Leap 42.2, where my Canon CanoScan 9000F
stopped working properly. scanimage scanned one page. Then stopped
working when starting to scan the next page. Scanner needed to be
switched off and on for the next scan.
Leap 42.2 comes with sane-backends V 1.0.24. Af
E-backends ?
