I didn't ask. Just ordered a pair in black this morning. (Along with
the Rockmount shirt). Will probably add the blue on the next order.

Actually they have a wool version.

FYI - the Ibex "commuter" knicker is cotton canvas. their wool
knicker is a 3/4 length cycling short - tight fit/chamois/etc.

I rode in the Patagonia Rock Guide shorts last night and was very
impressed. Even on a brand new B17 Special and no padded liner short
they felt great.
I'll have to check into the IBEX wool knicker next.

What's Gi2?
I was looking at the Riv site yesterday and noticed the new colers of
MUSA shorts. They also appear a tad longer. I emailed Grant and he
check a pair and said they were about 2cm longer. They look longer
than that. I'm gonna order a pair tomorrow. I like the new navy and
black ones. Ei
I'm also a fan of the Patagonia Rock Guide shorts. Commute in them
nearly every day.
Love the Pata. Gi2's as well.
OR Rapid Short is stretchy like the Rock's but lighter.
Pata. Thrift Short is kinda like the Boosucker...only made of 65% poly
amd 35% org.cottonPuckered finish.

Thought I'd put a footnote on this topic.
I bought a pair of Patagonia Rock Guide shorts. nicely made of course
but a little tight in the hips for the size. They work fine w/out a
padded liner but too tight with. The length is on the short side for
me for bike shorts( I'm 71in.tall ).
I then spent
Late to the discussion, but anyway: I use well chosen shorts from Goodwill,
where I, at any rate, can find top quality for $4.79. My best are a
Patagonia pair and another, longer one, both of good quality nylon and cut
loose and long enough that they don't dig in in front or slip down in back

Mostly just the MUSA shorts. Right now have a pair of XXL on,
although haven't needed that size in a number of years. The only time
they get worn is when it is hot and humid out. Then the billowing is
a nice thing. Eventually will hem the waist strap, which hangs silly
low now.

My only issue with the MUSA shorts is that they're a little too short-
waisted in a way that doesn't work for some women (i.e., the waist
isn't deep enough to accommodate a woman's derriere comfortably).
Clearly they're not truly a unisex garment. That said, I find I can
still wear them comfortably
No brand names to endorse, but when I'm not riding in MUSA shorts, and
it's not winter, I have a collection of cheap swim trunks with the
crotch net removed. The material is thin, smooth, cool, lightweight,
doesn't chafe or bind, it dries fast, and some even have pretty nice
pockets and look like c
I've looked a pair of shorts marketed by Woolrich, that seem to be
intended for police or military use, which they're marketing as the
"Elite Series Tactical" line. Here's a link to the manufacturer's

I'm a big fat dude these days and ride in my work clothes. I really
like my inexpensive Key logger jeans with suspenders. Until I started
wearing suspenders I always had my pants bunching up. Of course these
are long pants but its what I wear. I'll probably cut a older pair off
to make some shorts

Yep, I have the same issue with the MUSA shorts - too short and they
seem to blow up the leg. Found myself tugging them back into place
last weekend. As we all did, I wore shorter shorts in the past but now
much prefer shorts just above the knee.
Purchased a pair of Patagonia Gi II shorts a coup
Swrve vs. Rapha. On the bike Rapha is way better. They're thinner
which is great for wearing over lycra or padded undies and the button
adjusters inside mean you don't need a belt. I need a belt with my
Swrve shorts and that makes them a bit restrictive on the bike. The

Joel, I was going to ask the same question as Michael.
@Tom M.:That's a great idea! So simple! So obvious! I have a pair of
MUSA pants that I never wear, perhaps I'll try that before making a
purchase.

Joel, which Patagonia climbing short have you been using... the Rock
Guide short? Does it fit loose enough to wear a liner underneath for
longer rides? I use their Nine Trails shorts for hiking and find them
very comfortable.

I bought some MUSA pants, which ended up being too short, so I cut and
hemmed them. You can get the length you want, and they don't billow.
Lab-Gear makes nice heavy cotton shorts.

Ex Officio Amphi shorts. I cut out the mesh brief. I have about a

supple, lightweight nylon that never wear out.

Hey folks, thanks for all the responses. I may have to check out the
Rapha shorts. While they're expensive they seem to have the fit I'm
looking for and the style (simple and functional), it's just a matter
if they fit me correctly. I'm often in-between sizes which can be
frustrating.

As other have said, I like the J&G products, as well. In particular,
I bought a pair of their "Patrol Shorts" a few years back. I like 'em
because they're roomy enough to be worn over a pair of "chamois"
tights, if desired, with the added value of some very roomy cargo

I'm a fan of the North Face Paramount cargo shorts. Fitted enough, still
loose, cargo pockets and a gusseted crotch so your movement isn't, um,
restricted. Nice balance between light and durable, too.
