Thought I'd put a footnote on this topic.
I bought a pair of Patagonia Rock Guide shorts. nicely made of course
but a little tight in the hips for the size. They work fine w/out a
padded liner but too tight with. The length is on the short side for
me for bike shorts( I'm 71in.tall ).
I then spent an hour or so at REI trying on a few other brands of
similar shorts. The best one, I found, is the Kuhl Renegade short. A
little looser in hips so a padded liner works for the longer rides, 12
" inseam so they work great on bike. A few nice pockets too. Both
shorts use that nice stretchy fabric.

I think I'm set on shorts for now...now what about some nice knickers?
