As other have said, I like the J&G products, as well. In particular,
I bought a pair of their "Patrol Shorts" a few years back. I like 'em
because they're roomy enough to be worn over a pair of "chamois"
tights, if desired, with the added value of some very roomy cargo
pockets (I also have one of their wind jackets and like it a lot,
too).

For general tooling about town and sometimes for longer rides I also
like the Carhartt B190 canvas work shorts. They're just about perfect
for cycling, plenty roomy and with some nice sized pockets, but
narrower through the waist-to-crotch area so they don't bunch up.
They also become very soft and comfortable in warm weather after
repeated wear and laundering (the hammer loops kept getting hooked on
things, though, and are quite unnecessary for cycling so I cut 'em
off).
