This problem with the unresponsive finder has been getting worse for a while
now, but it is making it more difficult for me to use the machine now. I had

As someone suggested, I used terminal to format the drive. Then Disk Utility
saw it without crashing.
I used recovery mode to reinstall Monterey, While in recovery mode, I also
renamed the drive and the data drive was automatically renamed as well.
So everything is good.

The tab completions in the terminal are controlled by the shell being used. I
believe Catalina is using an older bash, and that new accounts created with Big
Sir and newer use zsh because of some licensing issues with the bash shell.

I suggest you use CMD + W, to close all open Finder windows and tabs, then be

Arrow to expand a folder and Left Arrow to colllapse a folder. This no longer
works in Bigsur.
However using Tab to expand a folder and Shift+Tab to collapse a folder works

When navigating through a list of files with the arrow keys, the cursor
periodically jumps to the bottom of the list for no apparent reason. Is there

my experience with this is that you can have however windows open that you
want. you can cycle around through all of them using command-accent or whatever
that is. maybe you have a different finder setting somewhere than I do but I've
had 3 or 4 windows open many times.
