Thanks. This is not an older Mac, it’s a 2020 M1. SO I guess I will disconnect all the external drives, all three of them, and restart. I neglected to say that when the Finder stops working, I have to open a program like Mail to shut down the computer at all, and it might take it several minutes to do it.
I just disconnected all the external drives, I have three, and I hope I don’t lose them all as one of them is my Time Machine backup. The Mac turned on very quickly.
