You do not need to use VO + Spacebar, to select a folder or item from the Sidebar. Once you have navigated to the item, it is selected. Now, just stop interacting with the Sidebar, and navigate to the Folder View area, where you can interact, and select an item from the folder contents. BTW - Rather than navigating to the Toolbar to change your Folder View to List, you can use the keyboard command CMD + NumberRow 2, to select List view.
