Try \linebreak[4]\mbox{annoyinglongunbreakableword}. You can put the whole thing in a TeX box, or put everything up to and including the first brace in a TeX box, the unbreakable mess in ordinary text, and the trailing brace in another TeX box. Footnotes in captions is an unholy mess. Try googling
