I've used a dinghy pump, and also pulled pulled hoses off and used a
screwdriver to clear blockages. You might get a few gallons of water. It
seems like a lot of water coming in, but the opening is only open for a few
seconds.

I am ordering parts and soon will do this installation and wanted to thank
everyone for their input. I also wanted to clarify that I was not doing this
in order to winterize the engine. Like others, I do that by pulling antifreeze
from a bucket on the ground with a hose running to the seacock
I'm trying to visualize this, and when I do I see lots of water gushing
into your boat - ?

I've heard of people using a dinghy pump to clear a blockage. Never had to
try it!

Stuffing a hose into the inlet works on the hard, but not when the boat's
afloat. I also don't like to tie up another person for such a mundane task.

The seacock tee idea came from Don Casey and makes it a quick and easy one man
operation. I usually have four gallons of pink stuff in a five g
Hi everyone,
Whatever method used, drain both strainer and water muffler before circulating
antifreeze. That pink stuff is lighter than water and will not displace the
water in the strainer. After circulating one gallon of antifreeze, my strainer
only had half an inch of pink at the top.

The only thing that I would add to it is that after the procedure, I open the
strainer and remove the pink AF from it, so that the strainer does not craze.

Water pump is what I should have said instead of impeller.

It takes a 2nd person, but our method is extremely simple. Our boat came with
a length of hose where one end has several wraps of rigging tape. This fits
snugly in the thru-hull and we just put the hose into the jug and suck the
antifreeze directly into the engine. No tools required.

Hey Bill,

Bob, I am confused by the mention of impeller? Are we talking about the raw

I am thinking most engines have a strainer right after the thru-hull, no?
When I winterize the engine, I just remove that strainer lid, (clean the
strainer), and pour a gallon and half through the strainer with the engine
running, and I am done -

Keep it simple. Upgraded my boat's 90 degree ell, using a 3/4" bronze female
tee and a screw in bronze plug. To winterize, I close the seacock, remove the
plug, insert a 3/4" male pipe to hose adapter, connect the hose from the
winterizing system and the engine sucks the antifreeze from a buck
If you cut the fresh water hose between the thru-hull and the raw water
strainer, you can insert a three-way ball valve. The common side goes to
the raw water strainer. One of the other sides goes to the thru-hull. The
third opening is fitted with a hose adapter. Attach a hose that can reach

that was probably me. I intercepted the hose running from the thru-hull to the
impellor and put a T connection in it. The connection was purchased from an

As I recall, Groco makes an emergency by-pass fitting to enable use of the
engine as a pump. This fitting could also serve your purpose.
