If you cut the fresh water hose between the thru-hull and the raw water strainer, you can insert a three-way ball valve. The common side goes to the raw water strainer. One of the other sides goes to the thru-hull. The third opening is fitted with a hose adapter. Attach a hose that can reach to the bottom of a container of antifreeze. To winterize the engine: Start the engine and run the hose to the bottom of the antifreeze container. Turn the ball valve so that it sucks the antifreeze into the engine (through the raw water strainer). When antifreeze exits the exhaust, shut off the engine. Then reverse the ball valve so that it is ready to suck fresh water. One advantage of this method is that you have a way to use the engine to empty the bilge in an emergency. (Remember to use RV antifreeze, not regular engine antifreeze (which is toxic).
