Today was the first time I have actually seen a cleaning tape ejected from
the 3494 library. If I insert a new one should the robot put it in a
specific place or not and do I need to do anything else special after that.

extend a retention period for some server backups. I know where I can reset the
retention information, but it was not clear to me if this would be retroactive for
existing backups or just affect new backups.

I've done this in two steps: 3.1.2.x to 3.7.x and then to 4.1. I believe we
tested the jump from 3.1.2.x to 4.1 directly and had some problems but I
haven't been able to prove that and I haven't tested it myself.

I'm guessing that perhaps the element numbers on the define drive commands
were wrong. You may have reversed them. Can you see the robot put the
cartridge in a drive? Is it putting it into the correct drive?
You can perhaps use lbtest to ensure that the element number and scsi
address match.

from seeing tape drives after adding an additional disk array???

A solution for this is to see how long your backups are running. If it is close to
the "Duration" time set in your client schedule, then increase the duration to give
adequate time for the schedule to run. (That duration is not just a "start" window it
is also a run window.)
