There is, as yet, no Windows 11. If your question was meant to refer to
Windows 10, which does exist, AOO is reportedin many posts on this list,
be compatabl with Windows 10. I have not, yet, personally used AOO 4.1.2
with Win 10.

What it is is a non Microsoft site with a bunch of third party speculation.

Its sort of parallel to comic book or movie fan boy site predicting the
content of the next Star Wars episode. Fun reading but pure fiction.

Microsoft is literally, today, giving away Windows 10 for free as a
download. No way is Microsoft going to be trying to sell a Windows 11
product in competition with a free giveaway of Win 10.

Not an Apple guy, so I can't tell you if AOO 4.1.2 is compatible with your
op sys.

If you download ONLY from www.openoffice.org and no where else you will be
"safe" in the sense that you will not get any "add ons"or assorted malware.

That site should list compatiIble Apple OS versions, if the set up
parallels the Windows part of the openoffice.org site.

Katherine had a question about apparently disappearing files when she tried
to load a history manager onto her OO installation.

Jan, who's first language is not English, graciously tried to help by
recommending a program called "recuva" to recover the missing files. The
phrase "dwn @piriform.com" which Jan used is not an e mail address per se.
It is a contraction of the phrase "download at piriform.com". Its a set
of directions to a web site, not an E mail address.

Similarly, Jan's use of the word "taste" is a stand in for "try". Remember
Jan is a non native English speaker, who is doing his best to try to help
out Katherine with a question Katherine asked.

I appreciate an's attempts to help Katherine and admire Jan's plunging into
the vaguries of American English to do so. Jan's efforts in a second
language, American English, are a heck of a lot better than mu feeble
attempts at French, which passes for my second language.

Please cut Jan some slackl

Dave Mainwaring -

I had the same issue with a Dell Pavillion 17 laptop, product number
K4Q96UA#ABA running 64 bit Win10 Home on a non touch screen.

Synaptic SMBus touch pad.

Couple weeks ago I gave up on the touch pad and plugged in an old logitech
wireless mouse. Its not a Win 10 compliant mouse, and the center scroll
wheel does not function, but I can live with that for a few days . I get
really good cursor control with the logitech and the left and right push
buttons work fine. No inadvertant "click throughs" when I park the cursor
on a link.

I have also found that Fry's sells a $14.99 HP wireless mouse, a model
something or other 3000, that claims to be fully functional in Win 10. I
bought one today, but haven' cut through the clamshell packaging and
installed it, yet.

Re: Windows 10 and Apache open office

2016-03-29 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Lucy Blake -

I upgraded my laptop from Win 8.1 to Win 10 about three months ago, just
after New Years.

I had no issues.

The upgrade went fine.

There is a learning curve from Win 8 to Win 10.

I did back up all my files (not programs, but files) to an external hard
drive as a precaution, but had no file issues.

I recommend that if you do upgrade that you back up all your files to an
external hard drive before proceeding just in case something goes wrong.
Better safe than sorry.

Re: Referencing a cell from previous worksheet in same spreadsheet file...

2016-06-03 Thread Jim McLaughlin
That will not work, but only for 1 value in the origin cell on sheet 1.

If the origin cell on sheet 1 undergoes a value change, that change will
not carry over to the target cell on sheet 2.

So if sheet 1's origin cell is dynamic, and its value is changed, by, say,
adding another number in to the origin cell [remember, the OP was using the
formula =SUM(:) in the origin cell on sheet 1] one needs o utilize the LINK
function in the "Paste Special"pop up / drop down screen.

Wade is telling Sean that a subject line should actually describe the issue

Re: propagating changes

2016-07-19 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Brian -

Thank you for the walk through on managing and changing default fonts in
Writer. Esay to follow and helpful.

A slightly related question:

How do I change the default font in Calc? I have vision issues and both
the Arial font structure as well as the default size are an issue for me.
While I can change each new spreadsheet's font type and size on the tool
bar, I'd prefer a manner in which I can change the default font to my
preferred one.

While I am in a Calc window, the Tools > Options> Open Office > Fonts, or
Tools>Options>Open Office > Calc or Tools>Options>Open Office > Calc Base
don't give any of the plethora of ways to change font options that are
available in an OPen Office window.

Thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

Re: propagating changes

2016-07-19 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Brian -

Thank you for the hints for an automatic universal font change in Calc.

I will create a new template and invoke that for my spread sheet usage
going forward. I will increase the number of sheets to 10, rather than the
default 3, and set a properly (for my eyes) sized font on each sheet, and
delete un used un needed sheets from various spreadsheet documents. Having
all sheets within one document pre "formatted" to the desired font and size
will be less frustrating than having to remember to invoke the template for
each sheet added.

Again, thank you.

Re: Conveting files from Word Perfect x7

2016-07-29 Thread Jim McLaughlin
I have not used any Word Perfect product in at least a dozen years.
I do not know what file formats WP 7 uses.

It is my understanding that Open Office (OO) 4.2.1does not directly handle
the PW file format *.wpd, due to licensing issues with Corel, the publisher
of Word Perfect.

Similarly, OO does not handle the *.docx file formats whic the newer
versions of MIcro$loth Word and Micro$loth Office utilize.

I know that there are "work arounds" for the Micro$oft files, which can be
forced to save documents in the *.doc format.

I do not know if there are similar workarounds for the Word Perfect file
formats within Word Perfect 7.

I do know that the MIcro$oft Word / Office work arounds require that yu
have Word / Office available upon your machine in addition to OO.

Hopefully others more familiar with WP7 will join in this discussion.

Re: Double line spacing

2016-08-06 Thread Jim McLaughlin
A writer whom I rather like was credited with commenting that my country
and his were unfortunately separated by a common language. I have always
thought that to be
a quite accurate observation.

I suggest that we agree to disagree and each withdraw from the field, each
knowing that we are each separately correct as to preferred usages in our
respective geographic areas.
Languages , even Latin, are living things and continually evolve. Perhaps
only Carthaginian appears to not do so. Scipio Aemilianus (Scipio
Africanus) seems to have taken care of that.

In any event, I think that half breed, Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill
had an apt point.

I promise to not make fun of your side's silly pronunciations of "clerk"
and spelling and pronunciation of "aluminum" if you will refrain from
calling me silly for my usage preferences.

To quote the world's self appointed expert, "BS".

Not a blatant falsehood.

If you have any ability to read and understand the meaning of the words you
are reading, you'll eventually figure out that my statement is a blatant
truth.

In my experience, OO, does not open .docx files but all too frequently
requires a sort of "translator" to open.

Now stop playing with your computer, and stop playing with your self, get

Re: What should be a simple Question

2016-12-17 Thread Jim McLaughlin
As others have noted, with regard to OpenOffice 4.x.x the answer is
basically "Yes".

I am going to espouse heresy here.

I have used OO about 4 years. When I started, it was a reasonable
alternative to the Micro$loth product.

Over that time period, IMHO OO has gone downhill.  Too many bugs not fixed;
too many problems ignored. (The user profile / dictionaries /. spell check
being only the most common one.) Its a result of too few volunteer
developers. I don't have those development skills, so I can't help with
those issues. I am a tool user, not a tool builder. I think I have
found a tool which suits my needs better, that being LibreOffice. I am
in the process of running both suites in parallel and think that I will be
eliminating OO sometime after the New Year.

Libre Office is available at:

www.libreoffice.org

LibreOffice is the same price as OpenOffice, i.e. free.

I have no economic or proprietary interest in either OpenOffice or
LibreOffice. Just a fellow looking for a better tool.

Re: Impress keeps changing my font color to black

2016-12-26 Thread Jim McLaughlin
The chronically obnoxious Mr. Groenescheij runs true to form yet again.

Totally lacking in communication skills, and being utterly without any
actual knowledge with which to answer another user's question, Mr.
Groenescheij
resorts to a snarky put down of both the original poster and a statement
from the original poster.

For Martin, this is what comes of living alone in his Mother's basement for
the last 30 years.

Yet another instane of a long festering defect in the OO "organization"

OO is effectively dead.

Try Libre Office fr a somewhat better experience.

Sad to be a *former* OO user, but after a while dealing with the defective

Why would Microsoft alter Windows Defender in Win 10 to make use of open

Postal Bar Code Add on - US

2014-02-19 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Running Open Office (OO) 4.0.1 with all updates current up to 19 Feb 2014.

OS is Windows 7 with all updates up to 19 Feb 2014.

16 gig memory, 4 TB disk space.

Long ago I used Word Perfect 8.0 which had a built in feature for adding a
US postal service
bar code either below the typed Postal Zip Code, or atop the first line of
the address, when printing either shipping labels or standard business size
envelopes. It was a very useful feature.

I have looked in vain for an analogous feature within OO 4.0.1, but not
yet been able to locate one, either within OO, or as an Add On or Plug in.

Can anyone here direct me to such a feature, either native to OO, or as an
add on or plug in.

Thank you.

Re: Postal Bar Code Add on - US

2014-02-19 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Mr. Jordan -

Thank you for the information.

I had never thought of that with respect to the USPS.

Back when I used the WP 8 feature, it seemed that mail with the barcode for
the nine digit zip did result in a one full day faster delivery.

There was once upon a time before I retired as the Secretary of a hobby
group that I did have 800 or so pieces of mail to send as business or bulk
rate stuff. But that was probably 15 - 20 years ago.

The fellow who is now performing that function for the group posts it to
our websiter and E mail the stuff.

Still, I will miss the bar code for the 9 digit zip on the envelopes /
mailing labels. Some how, it just looks better, more complete and
professional, with the bar code for trhe 9 digit zip.

Thank you again for the information.

I guess my age is showing.

Re: not working version of OO4.1.0

2014-05-16 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Google 401.msi

The msi extension is a Microsift Installer file.

I found a series of conversations back in November, 2013 regarding 401.msi
errors for OO with a purported link to a file source to fix thise errors.
Following is what I found:

*openoffice401*.*msi* download -
2shared
www.2shared.com/file/4iqcHDSx/openoffice*401*.html
Nov 13, 2013 - Here you can download file *openoffice401*. 2shared gives
you an excellent opportunity to store your files here and share them with
others.

There are a whole lot more references to 401.msi on Google, but I'm not
going to look at all of them since I'm not having the problem. You might
want to Google 401.msi yourself.

IF YOU DOWNLOAD A FILE FROM "THE WILD", BE SURE YOUR ANTIVIRUS PROTECTIONS
ARE WORKING, and examine the download carefully for trojans, virii,, and
other nastiness before installing it anywhere.

I had a similar issue with an HP printer which wanted a "TrayApp.msi".
That is an HP written installer file for a feature for my HP printer. I
felt safer with a file from HP, but still ran it through Kaspersky before
using it. The .msi from HP did solve my printer issue. I have no idea if
the 401.msi out there in the wild will solve your OO issue.

If you do try the 401.msi, please let us all know what happens.

Good luck.

Re: Suggestion.

2014-05-16 Thread Jim McLaughlin
This has been a very interesting thread.

It has also been the single most posted to thread I've seen in the six or
so months I've been a subscrber to this group.

What fascinates me is that other than the three defender's of OO
"orthodoxy" regarding "styles" ve. alternative methods, like a WP "reveal
codes" approach, the overwhelming majority of posters appear to desire the
WP/Corel "Reveal Codes" option to the very steep learning curve of the
"styles " approach.

Food for thought.

If the programmers behind OO want to provide a word processor which will
attract users, and avoid the very high costs of the MJKS or Corel products,
those programmers might want to seriously consider the efficacy of
providing what the users who have expressed an opinion appear to want,
rather tahn take the "...my way or the highway..." approach expresseed here
so far.

Not trying to start a pissing contest. Just pointing out what the
admittedly unscientifif opinion sample in this thread has so far shown.

Is there a technical reason why a Corel/WP "Reveal Codes" function can not
be implemented in 5.x.x?

I've attached a copy of the first bounce message I received. If this

I've kept a list of which messages from the users mailing list have bounced

The message received on 24 May was the second I received. The first was
about 4 weeks earlier. Unfortunately, I did not save the first such

working fine and that nothing appeared to have bounced.

Very odd.

LABELS question

2014-07-13 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Printer is an HP 6310.

OS is Windows 7.

Open Office 4.0.0

Label sheets are Avery # 5160.

I'd like to print multiple different labels on different column / row
combinations on the Avery sheet.

(Note: I do not want to print 30 iterations of the same label on a sheet.)

As it is, I can readily click through to T*ext Document > File > New >
Labels*
and once there get the dialog box, click on various column and row
selections, click single label and click new document. The screen shows a
single "box" corresponding to the label position on the sheet. It takes
any entry I type, and allows all sorts of formatting re type faces, colors,
print sizes, centering, etc.

What it won't do is allow me to type a second label with a different text.

I am forced to print the initial label and then open a new label form,
repeat all the steps, enter the second text, and print that, and repeat the
process for any additional labels.

That is amazingly inefficient.

I am sure I am missing something simple.

How do I enter two different labels in two different label fields, (or
three, or four, or five or six, for that matter) without having to
reinitialize the "LABEL" function?

Its a frequent occurrence that I need to make 4 or 5 labels with different
texts at one time.

I was readily able to enter multiple labels on a single label sheet with
both Word and WordPerfect.

This shouldn't be Rocket Surgery or Brain Science. What am I missing?

Thank you.

Re: LABELS question

2014-07-13 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Yes, thank you, problem solved.

I was certain that there was something simple which I was overlooking.

Boots, instructions, and unsubscribing

2014-07-27 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Dennis-
Rather than repeatedly performing an action which does not yield the result
you are seeking, why not actually read and follow the directions for
unsubscribing from the Open Office forum?

Or are you too stupid to pour piss out of a boot while reading the
directions written on the sole of the boot?

To unsubscribe, you must send an original E mail, from the account you used
to initially subscribe, to:

users-unsubscr...@openoffice.apache.org

Merely repeatedly relying to other posts here with a request that you be
"unsubscribed" will not accomplish what you seek, and it will seriously
annoy the residents.

When in doubt, RTFM and follow the instructions.

Inserting jpeg into .odt document

2014-07-30 Thread Jim McLaughlin
I have created a document, saved with the .odt extension.

I want to insert a .jpeg file int the document, between paragraphs in the
teext within the document.

I am having difficulty getting the .jpeg file to appaer and print within
the document.

Would some kind soul here walk me through the steps I need follow to
accomplish this task.

I have looked in the Pictures Toolbar list, found the "Insert File" command
button but cannot get that command button to appear in the standard tool
bar by copying into the standard tool bar, nor can I get the Pictures
toolbar to open at all.

I am seriously off the track here and would appreciate some guidance.

Thank you.

Re: I want to install Open Office version 1 on a Windows 98 SE installed computer.

2014-08-15 Thread Jim McLaughlin
What disk?

Where did you get the disk?

I suspect you purchased the disk from a third party reseller, and if so,
you are taking several risks.

I urge you to DOWNLOAD the Open Office 4.0.1 or 4.1.0 or whatever it is
this week directly from either:

 www.openoffice.com

or

www.sourceforge.com

These are the two official sites from which to obtain Open Office.

The downloads are without charge for the Open Office program.

You may have fees associated with your ISP in providing the download
connection.

Re: emails bouncing`

2014-10-07 Thread Jim McLaughlin
I also get the same set of "bouncing E mail messages". I got all panicked
the first couple of times, but I wisely learned to ignre them.

It is a tad irritating that the "Powers Who Have Appointed Themselves To
Be", though notified of and aware of the issue with the list management
software, have routinely ignored both the problem and the annoyance it
causes.

Sort of like ignoring the need for a "reveal codes" analog function in OO
Writer, instead assuming that everyone must - and will, or else! - learn
the "styles" system.

There is no need for your insulting remarks regarding the use of French in

You will note that the original poster, M. Chenavier, provided a full

>From you E mail address I intuit thatht your primary ISP is in Canada. I do
not know if you are an Anglophone r Francophone, but from your comments I
must presume you are an Anglophone.

I hope that you have downloaded the German language version of Open Office
through the official open office site at www.openoffice.org. That sdite
provides you many language options for the Open Office suite, and many
options for the operating system under which you will run Open Office.

I suggest that you uninstall the German language version of Open Office
which you have downloaded. There really is no way to "switch" it to
English, whether US English, British English, or Canadian English.

After uninstalling the German language version, go to www.openoffice.org
and select the "flavor" of English version which you want to use, as well
as the Operating System you are using, and download ONLY from www.open
office.org.

The Open Office website will take you to Source Forge, from which your
download will be obtained.

Downloading any language version of Open Office from any source other than
Open Office.org is risky and may result in installation of various forms of
undesirable programs being installed on your system.

 Sir -

I am saddened to learn that you are having difficulty installing Open
Office 4.1.1

I am embarassed by the tone and tenor of some of the answers you have
received from members on this user's group.

To begin to respond to your issues, we would need to know:

Type of machine – e.g. PC clone / Mac / other

Precisely which operating system are you using?

What anti virus programs are you using?

What web browser are you using?

down load site from which you are downloading?

 Only download from www.openoffice.com

Note that the software for this user's group will strip out any picture or
scree shot which you post. We will never see it.

I believe that English is not your primary language, French is not mine. I
have learned that it is sometimes helpful to compose my material s in
English, and use a translation robot / application to translate into
French. An example is at: https://translate.google.com/ That particular
application / bot will translate from French into English as well.

No, no one viewed the attachment you sent, as the list software strips out

This list works when users pay attention to its operating constraints.

You have also twice been told that there is no "key" required for OO. You

You have been asked once for the identification of the operating system on

So far, you appear to have ignored every response you have received.

People on this list like to help and often do so quite quickly and
effectively.

However it is very difficult for us to help you if you are unwilling or
unable to actually follow instructions.

Importing PDF form into OO 4.0.1

2015-02-04 Thread Jim McLaughlin
I am running OO 4.0.1 on a PC clone under Windows 7 Home Premium edition.

I am looking for a way to import into OO a form created by a third party
with Adobe in PDF format. I want to be able to fill out the form with my
computer, rather than print a blank form and fill in by hand.

For reasons not known to me, the third party did not create a fillable PDF
form, which I can fill out with the 'puter, either within OO or with Adobe
reader. Other third parties do provide other kinds of fillible forms so I
know it can be done.

I just don't know how.

I am looking for a way to fill out the form with OO and save it in the
.PDF format.

Any ideas?

Thank you each and all in advance.

Re: Bad download

2015-02-05 Thread Jim McLaughlin
>From whence did you download OpenOffice?

I suggest that you were not on the only official OpenOffice site, that
being www.openoffice.org.
If you downloaded from that site, and only that site, you will not have any
extraneous and undesired programs added to your download.

Sadly, there are unscrupulous folks who have set up sites offering what is
purported to be OO, packaged with other, sometimes malicious, software.

2015-02-22 Thread Jim McLaughlin
Very difficult to try to help if you don't tell us:

ONLY BE www.openoffice.org),

b)  Web browser and version;

c).  OS and version;

d) available disk space on hard drive disk you seek to load / install OO
