[RBW] Re: What worked and what didn't in the rain and hail this morning

2013-01-08 Thread Jay in Tel Aviv
Thanks for all the replies.
The weather this mornig was just as bad as yesterday. The main highway
here in Tel Aviv was closed due to flooding, causing huge traffic
everywhere. Took me an extra 5 minutes to get to work because I pedal
slower in waterproof pants :)

Michael - Yes, I am really in Tel Aviv
Ted - Maybe the Nashbar socks are not real neoprene. They are good in
light rain but when if it's really wet they get saturated and hold
water like a wet suit. Definately not just sweat.
Bruce - I have looked at seal skinz but was put off by the price. The
issue for me is that it doesn't rain here very often, but when it does
can come down in buckets a few days in a row. So I would need several
pairs of $35 sox which which I would use only a few times a year. Next
time I'm feeling flush.

We don't get real winter weather here, and people really overreact to
rain. Some friends started up a Friday afternoon pub/music thing a few
weeks ago. More people showed up during the war with Gaza when rockets
were falling than the following week when it was raining. Funny world.
Or maybe not so funny.

First time I marked the stays with tape to remember where each one was

Now I just leave them on and shove the whole thing on top of a closet.

[RBW] Re: So, with Rivendell bikes are you supposed to get...

2013-01-08 Thread Matthew J
Race geometry has a lot to do with the 'nervous' handling of a race bike.

If someone were to make a modern race bike with steel tubing, the
experience would not be much different than riding a carbon fiber
offering.

On the other hand, a CF bike with Riv geometry would have similar ride
characteristics to the Riv. Arguably a CF Riv would damp vibrations less.
But this could be managed with thicker CF tubing. Of course then the bike
would weigh in close to a steel Riv, obviating the primary reason for going
CF.

2013-01-08 Thread Jim Thill - Hiawatha Cyclery
Vibration damping has more to do with tire size/construction/pressure. It's
probably true that the frame plays a bigger part in vibration damping for
extremely high-pressure tires. Put some 700x23 at 120psi on your Atlantis, and
the ride will be HARSH.

[RBW] Luxos B dynamo light user review

2013-01-08 Thread Toshi Takeuchi
A couple of notes on the installation of the Luxos B dynamo light:

1. The light is much bigger than the Cyo light.
2. The bracket must angle upwards. You can no longer mount the light
with the bracket angling downwards because the light cannot swivel to
the proper orientation.

Because I could not mount the light downwards, I needed to add a bunch
of washers/spacers to the front of my Mark's rack to have the light
clear my Acorn mini-rando bag.

--An immediate difference at start: gone is the dark spot in front of
the light. The light spits out a U of light with the bottom of the U
starting on the ground right in front of you, so you don't have to
worry about getting a nearfield light and losing out on distance.

The light output is quite ingenious--I think. The way you align the
light is to have the light hit the ground about 30 feet in front of
you. What this does is put a big hotspot on the ground a little over a
lane wide in front of you. This gives you clear vision of any
obstacles in front of you, but there is still decent light within the
U which spreads out from the bike to the hotspot. In addition the
width of the light much wider than the Cyo--most of the 2 lane road.
Don't throw the hotspot into the horizon, put it on the ground--it
will improve the ride visibility immensely and you won't blind the
traffic.

The color of the light did not look too blue. Without direct
comparison to the Cyo, it looked pretty similar to me.

The downside of the light could be that the only area that is as
bright as the Cyo is in that hotspot I mentioned earlier. The rest of
the illumination is less, so it is much easier to get distracted by
street lights. If you do mostly city riding, then you probably don't
need or maybe wouldn't want this light.

For me, yes, I wish that whole area within the U was as bright as the
hotspot is, but for lighting what is most essential for safe and
enjoyable riding, the Luxos does a great job, and it is a big
improvement over the Cyo for me.

Wonderful set of images. Arguably, the A/R morphed into the Atlantis, and
became the best-selling design of the Rivendell lineup. But, every bike

Re: [RBW] Re: FS: 60cm Sam Hillborne

2013-01-08 Thread Jim Mather
Here's the Riv size chart:

PBH measurements and Sam Sizes:
75-81cm PBH = 48cm Sam
81-85cm PBH = 52cm Sam
84-89cm PBH = 56cm Sam
88-94cm PBH = 60cm Sam
94-101cm PBH = 64cm Sam

It's probably too tall for you. I have an 88.5 PBH, and you can see
that there is not much seat post showing.

Thanks

[RBW] Re: So, with Rivendell bikes are you supposed to get...

2013-01-08 Thread Cyclofiend Jim
Yep.

And it's a combination of awareness of variables.

To call out a couple: Normal volume tires require clearance. They also
require you think about where you put the bottom bracket, as if you just
slap a set of 44 cm tires onto frame designed for 23's (well, if you
actually _could_ do so...) alluva sudden your bb has jumped a centimeter
higher. That changes how the bike enters and exits turns. (Have to go way
back into the archives to find the specific RR, but recall GP writing about
how higher bb designs felt like they were in a trough. Probably
paraphrasing and don't hold him responsible for my imprecise
recollections...)

Another vote for chain tensioner. Back when folks used to ask why anyone
would want a singlespeed, I bought the simple Surley one to play with on my
MB1. That's - crikey - 13 years ago Slap some spacers on the hub and
get a BMX splined singlespeed cog. Maybe $45-50? I've cooked three or
four freehubs over the years, but it just works.

[RBW] Re: 52cm Waterford Bombadil FFHS for Sale, single top tube-Last Notice before the Ebay

2013-01-08 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
In the spirit of following up... After a cross country journey via UPS,
this frame has been sitting in my basement for a couple weeks while Tommy
rounded up parts. He doesn't quite have everything for the build yet but he
came by yesterday to drop off what he does have. He wasn't planning to
build anything but the lure of shiny bits, frame, and bike-stand in the
same room was too much for him to
bear.

The frame came with a front wheel. Somewhere along the parts gathering
process I convinced Tommy that he should build his own rear wheel. I'm
probably not the most qualified person to be giving wheel building
instructions. Despite my limitations the wheel is coming
together.
It still needs a little fine tuning, but should be ready to roll in the
next couple days.

[RBW] Re: So, with Rivendell bikes are you supposed to get...

2013-01-08 Thread Jeremy Till
Although we don't like to talk about it here in our little world of lugs
and quill stems, many mainstream CF bike manufacturers have started to
realize the advantages of something closer to the Riv geometry. Many of
them have "endurance" road models right up through the fanciest carbon
fiber and component spec that feature taller headtubes and slacker angles
than the full-on race-spec team machines. Of course, there's still the
matter of fit--these bikes are often fit a couple of sizes smaller than the
Rivendell fitting philosophy, and riding a smaller bike is liable to feel
squirrely and unstable when compared to a Riv with Riv geometry and Riv
sizing.

[RBW] Re: Advice on how to best obtain a 650b single speed?

2013-01-08 Thread Jeremy Till
I'd say if you think you are pretty committed both to singlespeed riding
and 650b wheels, then getting a 650b rear wheel with the White eccentric
hub would be a good investment. Think about it beyond just the
Hillborne--with an eccentric 650b wheel, no matter what 650b frame you
happen to have available in the future, you have the option to run it
singlespeed.

[RBW] Color Question from an Indecisive Person

So my Bombadil is taking a short trip over to the Color Factory in
Waretown. Even though thier prices seem scarily low Bruce was awesome
on the phone so I am gonna take the leap soon. The only issue is I
have never gotten a re-spray and I am having angina over which color
is most appropriate for the twin TT bomba. I wanted something
metallic, maybe a dark purple or a soft orange, as you can see I am
worlds apart even in my own mind. Anyone have any pics of thier
bombadil they can share so I can play off some ideas?

I have no color advice, but I was reminded of a phone conversation I
overheard years ago when I worked at another shop. A jaded mechanic was on
the phone for a long time with an apparently neurotic customer, who was
asking for a verbal description of a color of something or another... All I
really remember was the mechanic doing a perfect deadpan as he said: "It's

Hahaha, I am the opposite, where I cant give anyone an accurate
description. I would honestly prefer they just do whatever they want and I
will love it, there is really no color that I don't like, outside of neons.
Understandably, most shops are not comfortable with that arrangement for
obvious reasons. Oh the life of a chronically indecisive person, the frame
has been sitting next to my bed this long while I waxed and waned about
where to just send the damn thing.

[RBW] Bullmoose brake lever question

2013-01-08 Thread BSWP
I'm going to try the Bullmoose bars on my QuickBeam, as a test change from
the 'M bars. It's easy enough to remove the moustache bars, brake levers
and stem as a clean cockpit, leaving my tape wrap in place, for a quick
change back later on. But for Bullmoose bars, has anyone experimented with
placing the brake levers well to the inside and just building up tape wrap
for a wide hand placement area? I think I'll try that, it would put the
brake levers similar to where I'm used to them, and leave lost of room for
moving my hands around.

And oh, are these Moosies wide! I'm not going to trim 'em narrower just
yet, but slipping through traffic will be more interesting, that's for sure.

Stable, predictable, comfortable, but by no means sluggish: my Rivs (all
roads) turn in "intuitively" with no hesitation. In fact, they handle
quicker than other road bikes I've ridden. But the last one was built in
'03, so perhaps Grant's designs have moved toward slower turning? Certainly
the Sam Hill didn't turn in like my roads.

It will be interesting to ride the Ram and compare it to the roads. I
expect it will fall somewhere in between, which is probably good since I
just discovered it accepts 35 mm tires (34 mm actual -- Kojaks, on 27mm
rims with very possible room for flattish fenders if carefully installed.

Re: [RBW] Re: Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-08 Thread René Sterental
I had the same issue when trying to choose custom colors. First one was on
the Bombadil, and after choosing an almost black dark green found that the
painter either chose another dark green color due to him not having the
Imron one I had chosen, or that the color I chose looked completetely
different when painted on the frame vs. what I had imagined it would look
like. Could never tell, but learned a valuable lesson: Colors look
different in charts than they do on real objects!

I was dissapointed with the Bombadil's color, but luckily, the current
owner just loved it.

When I needed to repaint the Atlantis, after much debate and going back and
forth, as well as countless photo reviews on Flickr, I decided that Grant's
original color choice was the best option for it. I asked the painter
(Riv's local painter) to repaint it with the original Atlantis colors and
just added a panel on the downtube with a different decal to differentiate
it from the stock configuration and make it unique and personal. The color
came out very lovely, but when compared side by side with the original
fork, it's different. I was already warned to expect that, but does it mean
that there isn't a single official color, that the different painters use
different brands with colors that are supposed to be equivalent or that the
quality control at Imron sucks? Or, perhaps, that the effects of time and
sun on the paint will change it?

Now I have to send the Hunqapillar for a repaint since it's got its new
fork, the one thing I know is that I don't like the original gray color.
Funnily enough, when the painter gave the new fork a quick coat of gray
paint so I could start riding it right away, the gray coat he gave matches
the original color from Japan perfectly...

Still, I had originally thought to have it repainted in silver, after
seeing some great photos of a silver Atlantis. He suggested going to pewter
instead, and after finding photos of another pewter Atlantis (I believe)
online, I started going back and forth and am still undecided...

Isn't it funny how a simple choice can be so difficult to make?

Re: [RBW] Re: Bullmoose brake lever question

2013-01-08 Thread René Sterental
Great! I was actually thinking about trying reverse brake levers on Bosco
Bullmoose bars, just to see. On the regular Bullmoose bars, I think the
brake levers on the standard position work very well. Let me know how you
work it out with your configuration and post photos. It may be worth trying
it as well.

[RBW] Re: Rain follow up

"So I would need several pairs of $35 sox"

You may be able to get by with only one pair of the $$$ waterproof
sox.
The gortex sox I have are not very thick and have little to no
insulation.
So what I do is put them over fleece sox that are warm, and those I
put over very thin (might be silk) sox liners.
Those innermost sox get all the washing. I use just the one pair of
gortex sox and very rarely wash them.
I think of them like shoe covers that go inside the shoe. In fact I
originally bought them instead of getting expensive foul weather boot
for sailing. Looked at that way they were a real bargain.

[RBW] Re: So, with Rivendell bikes are you supposed to get...

2013-01-08 Thread Joe K
I had had two modest steel bikes before, both low-to-mid-level
Raleighs from the 70s; also had borrowed a few bikes. When I learned
about Rivendell, I decided it was time I found out what that vaunted
"good steel ride" feels like, and ordered a custom, circa 2000.
It's true, nothing else felt like this, Could be partly because I
was riding the wrong size just before, but my first Raleigh was
roughly the correct size. Tire size and type were fairly consistent
across all bikes (28 mm or 1-1/4")..

Re: [RBW] Re: Rain follow up

2013-01-08 Thread René Sterental
Now we're talking about buying a pair of shoes a half-size up or more to
accomodate all those socks... :-D At least for me, where tight shoes make
my feet hurt...

I'm also wondering if you need these to bike if you use shoes with a
waterproof membrane. Even though I'm not experienced biking in the rain, I
do want to overcome that. Living in the SF Bay Area I've learned that most
of the time, biking in the rain is really biking through some fine
drizzles, although every now and then when it rains, it pours.

To me, in my blissful ignorance, if it's going to pour, I'd probably prefer
the waterproof socks with the liners for warmth and confort as suggested,
but wearing sandals so the water doesn't pool inside my shoes or takes
forever for them to dry as they get wet. For drizzles, shoes with a
waterproof membrane with wool socks would probably work well. Am I
mistaken?

I once went through a deep puddle of water in an underpass on the Guadalupe
Trail where the water almost reached the bottom of my largest crank. I had
some speed so I was coasting through it when I happened to hit a rock that
was underwater which forced me to dismount and consequently, I got my
waterproof shoes full of water. It took several days for them to be
completely dry...

So, what I'd like to know is how people who ride in the rain regularly
address the issue of water dripping down your pants or legs when it's
raining, vs. rain actually falling on your shoes and getting them wet.

I received a Brooks cape (poncho) as a gift, which I've tried twice on
light drizzles and found very nice and vented. It has sorts of arm sleeves
with an elastic band so it doesn't lift up your arms, as well as two
magnetic loops to keep the front hanging from the handlebar; the
combination of both features keep the cape snug around your back so no
waist cinching is needed, as well as allowing water to drip in front of
your feet if it pools on the front when it's raining hard.

René (waiting for more rain)

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose brake lever question

2013-01-08 Thread ted
What I have done on my Bombadil, and like a lot, is to put the brakes
at about the middle of the straight section. I then use cork tape on
either side of each lever (4 sections for the whole bar). Hands go
most anyplace. Outside the levers, on the levers, inside the levers,
all good. Since the clamps for my levers are thicker outboard than
inboard, ometime I may try doing one layer of cork outside the levers,
then start a second layer at the end of the bar and run it all the way
to the strut just going around the lever clamp sort of like you do
with road levers.
I have paul thumbies mounted on the arc right next to the struts and
have not bothered to tape the arc part of the bar.
If I were doing a single speed I think I would run the tape right
across the strut junction and end both sides in the middle. Might even
tie a monkey fist over the twined ends in the middle like marking the
wheel of a boat.

[RBW] Re: Rain follow up

2013-01-08 Thread ted
I guess I buy my shoes loose or something, but I found just loosening
the laces gave enough room for my 3 layer setup. So no special shoes
in my case.
I'm also in the SF area and usually just let my feet get wet. I bought
the waterproof sox for crewing on a boat in the pacific cup several
years ago, and have rarely used them since. But when I was going to
take my fenderless Bombadil to tour the east bay dirt with Manny the
day after xmas the prospect of hours of cold soggy feet had me digging
out the waterproof sox.
Worked great. Feet stayed comfortable, warm and dry.

I have an old race bike (Gios Torrino) that is built with steel tubing
(old standard diameter main tubes). It is very quick and responsive. A
lot of folks would call it harsh and twitchy, though when I was racing
crits with it I thought it was great (right tool for the task).

I don't believe the material you build a bike out of drives the kind
of ride and handling you get. It does affect how you spec the tubes
etc. to get the result you want.

I'm in that camp. If I were to get a custom, I'd ask the builder to

Re: [RBW] Re: Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-08 Thread Steve Palincsar
It does put a huge burden on the builder, I think. It's easier if you
have to choose from a restricted range of choices, especially if the
builder has chosen several that he thinks work particularly well with
that type of bike. "Sky is the limit" really doesn't work, as not all
colors or schemes work with all types of bikes.

In the case of Rivendells, it seems to me practically all their colors
harmonize with and reflect the sort of color schemes you see in photos
of where they ride on Diablo, and to me it's part of the Rivendell
signature.

There are plenty of colors that would look great on a Kirk, Richard
Sachs or a Peter Weigle that would just plain look wrong on a Rivendell.

[RBW] Re: Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-08 Thread Andy Smitty Schmidt
I was recently in a similar quandary... with a custom bike build. I gave
the builder some ideas of colors that I like and told him whatever it was I
wanted it to be kind of muted. I left the final color choice up to him. My
thought being that whatever the color, it would be fine. There will likely
be times when I wish it was something different and other times when it is
the perfect color. I'm kind of excited about the surprise. The bike's still
at the painter so not sure how this approach will work out.

Happy Choosing,
Smitty

On our Custom Bilenky tandem we told them painters choice.. I'm ok with

I need to send my Bombadil in for a repaint.. I've scratched it up pretty

annoying the hell out of me.I'm thinking of going back to D&D for
standard color repaint and decaling.. or is that just plain boring?

I do know I want something a little tougher and thought about powder coat
but don't know

Dawn has custom colors on her Atlantis and Roadeo, all of mine are stock
colors... hmmm stock colors are so easy and I know what they are going to

I think I made the mistake of attaching a large photo to my post as I got
an email from the Mail Delivery Subsystem stating that my message was too
large. I don't know if it was posted, so apologies for potentially sending

I was able to track down the original photo of the Atlantis in pewter that
has me drooling over that color choice.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/37542512@N04/7107210911/

You can see how lovely it is, and also how loverly the silver looks on the
Bombadil... which one to choose? Still have a week or two to keep changing
my mind before I take the Hunqapillar apart and take it to D&D...

[RBW] WTT: NITTO Moustache for 42 Noodle

2013-01-08 Thread Michael
In the never enging saga of me trying to dial in my set up, I am looking
for narrower Noodles.
I have a slight falling thru feeling still with my 44 Noodles and think
42's are more my size.

The 'stache came on my used bleriot so I cannot verify history. But it
looks great except for the scratch on the right collar from someone
mounting it I guess.

I can email pics of interested.

[RBW] Re: Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-08 Thread Joe Bernard
I like the metallic pewter on my Saluki. It's close to the flat grey
Mark-at-Riv prefers on his customs (which I think is also the old Hunqa
color), but the metallic brightens it up when the sun hits it. From certain
angles on certain days, I'd swear I see a hint of pink/violet peeking
through...very pretty.

As someone else mentioned, this kind of "neutral" color is excellent as a
base for "repainting" with different-colored bartape, cables, saddles and
such. Mine is currently rather conservative with a black/silver mix of
parts/cables, but someday I'll go nuts and add red tape, cables and
waterbottle. Just for giggles. :-)

Re: [RBW] Re: Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-08 Thread Peter Morgano
I looked into PC, it seems like alot is in the prep, which you
unfortunately cannot really see unless you are watching the guy and know
what you are looking at, alot of acid baths and undercoatings that go
unmentioned usually. I think the epoxy primers most paint shops use
nowadays are superior at blocking moisture from getting to the raw steel
and are therefore a bit more forgiving than an ok powder coat. Plus it
seems like the cost of PC has gone up everywhere. Bruce quoted me less
thann $200 for the whole job which is what my local guy was gonna charge me
to powder coat. Shame sometimes I dont own a car since I am gonna have to
ship it 2 1/2 hours away to NJ, but with the cost of gas to get there and
back maybe coming out even in the end.

[RBW] Recommend me a Rando bar please.

2013-01-08 Thread Christian
I really like my Velo Orange rando bars. I have the 41 (they are 41 at the ends
and about 38 at the hoods) and have been very happy. I switched to them from
a pair of 44 Noodles. I prefer the bend of the rando and the narrow width. All
that said, I have them on my 650b low trail bike. I have 44 Noodles on my
Hunqapillar but will likely switch to the randos I like them so much.

Copy Amit's grey with kidney bean headtube and panels. Ya know, that classic
scheme used on the Hunqapillar. It looks really good with twin TT's.

[RBW] Re: Color Question from an Indecisive Person

2013-01-08 Thread Garth

Yes Peter ... metallics are wonderful because the colors change with the
light :)

Check out the orange metallics also , like 44467 Dk. Persimmon Met. and
44471 Burnt Orange Met. They do not show a lighter shade of orange on the
charts, but a Seminole Red Met. h7994 looks rather cool to me. It is more
of an orange red than "red". I have found no reference for a bike frame to
be painted as such , so it would be surely unique ! If I repaint mine it
may be this ! The metallics in particular are really hard to judge online
, as in the sun the metallics really shine and change appearance !

The price has come down on the Proto Appaloosa and pink custom. Even if you
have to have D&D repaint the custom, it's still a good deal on a unique

2013-01-08 Thread allenmichael
I remember a picture of Jimmy Carter on what looked like a Root-Beer Brown
custom (on an Atlantis pic page). That would be a great Bombadil color. I
dream of an Orange Custom (has anyone seen the second season of the hour?
there is one episode where Belle wears an amazing orange dress—i want a
bike that color), but the Bombadil cries out for something even earthier.

I've had Noodles from 48 down to 42, and prefer the 42's. And, I have

The "falling through" sensation you describe was something I
