[RBW] Guess I don't get down to the basement much

2010-04-21 Thread Me
...just walked down into our basement to get a tool, looked over to my
right and was curious what was in one of our many boxes from our
various relocations in the past 3 years [first, from the NYC area to
Minnesota, and then, now, to Portland, OR].

Ha, completely forgot I have a brand new, totally un-built Rivendell
'Bleriot' frameset with all the parts sitting in a box. Some nice
parts too: lugged stem, Noodles, Paul 'Racer' brakes, TA rings and a
beautiful daVinci crankset... all sitting in there, all new and
unopened.
Box next to it, a brand new wheelset of Velocity 650B 'Synergy' rims,
laced to a SON hub for the front and for the rear, a Chris King
cassette hub.

Me thinks I am going to finally build this thing up and try out the
whole 650B thang.

**no wonder my wife continually reminds me I am an idiot**

[RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?

2010-04-21 Thread Earl Grey
I should have mentioned that durability is not an issue for me, and
neither is flat protection. I hardly ever get flats, have never
destroyed a tire, and I habitually ride tires well beyond their
intended use. I ride my Jack Brown Greens on hardpack trails with lots
of sharp rocks sticking out of the dirt, and have only gotten one
(pinch) flat in 6 months (tire probably only had 30-35 psi, because I
am lazy about topping up). I just want something that won't wash out
in deep sand as easily, and still be really nice on the road where I
ride 70-80% of the time. For dedicated offroading, I have 42mm IRC
Mythos XC Slicks, which do the job very well and still are decent on
the road.

On most of the skinwall tires I have had, the sidewalls turned
threadbare (due to UV/ozone, I assume) before the tread wore out, and
I'd much rather have that happen but have a supple tire than have a
bomb-proof tire that feels dead. So I'll probably give the regular
Marathons a miss. :)

I am about ready to order the 35 Paselas, because I have the sneaking
suspicion that the 38 Marathon Racers are actually skinnier than the
35 Paselas, given that the 42 Supremes run 37.5 according to rivbike.
If the Racers run true to size, please let me know as I may try them
instead.

Cheers,

Gernot

[RBW] Another tire thread: does Riv sell 42/40 Marathon Supremes?

Hi,

Can someone educate me on the tire sizes available for Marathon
Supremes? Or, can someone recommend another touring tire that is
roughly a true 38mm? Does suppleness matter when touring? Or is the

Thanks

The last I read, they were thinking of offering two options: red panel/
headtube and orange panel/headtube.

As for the strength of the Sam Hillborne, here is what Rivendell
Reader #41 (which is free to download) said when introducing the Sam
Hillborne:

---
The Sam may be even more versatile than the AHH, because the
tubing is slightly thicker (same gauge as the Atlantis), so it more
suited
to loaded touring. With AHH clearance, Atlantis tubing gauges, and a
fork that splits the diff, you can think of it as halfway between the
Atlantis and A. Homer Hilsen.
--

I'm not sure what that fork comment is referring to (clearance?
tubing?).

I've read that the Atlantis tubing is butted .9/.6/.9. And the same
Riv Reader that introduces the Hillborne has an article about the
Bombadil. The article on the Bombadil says the tubing is .1 thicker
than the Atlantis, so that would make the tubes on the Bombadil 1.0
millimeter thick. The article also says the Bomadil's down tube and
double top tubes are straight gauge (no butting). The Hunqapillar is
described as having Bombadil stout tubing in the main tubes, which
presumably means the top and down tubes (and that might also be the
case for the down tube as well).

In any case, the Hunqapillar has 1.0 mm tubing, and the Sam Hillborne
and Atlantis have .9 mm tubing. The Atlantis is recommended for
fully loaded touring. Therefore, it seems like the Sam Hillborne is a
pretty stout bike.

Also, are you aware that the double top tube design of the Hunqapillar
has morphed into something different than depicted on the website?
The second top tube is most likely going to angle down and join the
seat tube in the middle of the seat tube.

I recall you mentioning it once back in your blog days. I just assumed

Pacenti has some potentally great 650B tires about to ship. Get your

Of course the venerable Hetres should be a fit as well.

The only risk I see is this may nudge out your other rides to become

Big fan of the Bullmoose bars. Especially the metallic run Riv says
Nitto sent in error. I do not have a bike with the correct rise

Re: [RBW] Guess I don't get down to the basement much

2010-04-21 Thread Ray Shine
For a moment there, I thought we lived in the same house. I, too, have a box
in my basement that contained a Bleriot recently purchased from another list
member. Mine is built, however, and I have put about 50 miles on it since
receiving it last Tuesday. I also wanted to experience the 650B thing,
whatever that is. I read on this forum how wonderful the 650B ride is, and am
curious what that means.

The bike rides great. Quite comfy, but so are the other Rivs. It has drops and
bar-ends. I am awaiting another parcel from VO that contains brake levers and
grips, then my plan is to replace the Nitto Noodles with Albatross and thumb
shifters -- also a first for me. My Bleriot came with a Brooks Flyer (sprung).

The only thing to report so far is that I learned very early on how important
it is to keep that inside pedal up when turning at any significant speed.
Also, when I stop, I can easily place foot on ground. On my 700c Rivs, that's
always a toe stand if I stay on the saddle. So, that aspect is more
comfortable. I'll report more soon, and send pix to Cyclofiend after the
cockpit make-oveRay

I was down in my basement yesterday puttering around and working on my
bikes. All I found was dust, boxes full of stuff I don't really need,
and some cracked Planet Bike fenders. Last week I found my Keen sandal
which had been MIA for a year. Maybe I'll go down there and rummage
around some more. Sure would be nice to find an Atlantis but I don't
think so...

Hey Scott, that sounds like a great bike you have there. Feel free to
contact me off list if you want to get out for a ride one of these
days. I live in Portland. In fact, any list members in the area that
want to get together for a ride, or are swinging through town, drop me

I've ridden both the 35 paselas and the 35 racers (which did run true
to size). i recently sold the racers to a list member because I
didn't care for the ride. the racers might be relatively more
"supple" and have better rolling resistance than other schwalbe tires,
but they still felt harsh to me compared to the pasela. in any
event, for what you want, both tires are probably as good as it gets
at that size in 700c. there's not too many options.

IMHO suppleness matters more in those situations but there are
tradeoffs- flat tires are a major nuisance on a loaded touring bike

[RBW] Silver Shifter Adjustment

2010-04-21 Thread MichaelH
Between my wife and I, we have four bikes with silver shifters, two DT
and two BE. The DT shifters can be set with a very light touch and
hold that position without any loosening and skipping. However the
two BE need to be tightened down to a point where the shifting is much
stiffer, and sill I find after a few days of riding the D ring will
loosen a bit and the chain will jump gears.

The only other variable I can think of is that the bikes with BE are
more often ridden on dirt and rough roads. Has anyone else noticed
this?

[RBW] Re: Silver Shifter Adjustment

Michael,

I have noticed that the silver shifters need more tightening on rear
derailleurs that have a higher spring tension.

My experience between DT and Bar end has been the opposite of
yours...I don't understand why. I end up tightening the DT silver
shifters during most rides.

You may have bought already but my four JB greens measure between 34
and 35mm the two most broken in being 34.8 and 35.1, I am not sure
you are gaining anything with the Paselas. I have been looking at the
spec chart for the Racers too, but too cheap to pull the trigger,
based on ETRO the 38 racers should be 40mm wide. I have found the
schwalbes measure true to stated ETRO data not what is on the box at
times. Proportionally it should be like moving up from Rolly Pollys
to JB, the 38 racers are the next step as far as I can see.

For the moment it is JB green for me.

[RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none

2010-04-21 Thread MichaelH
To answer two questions at once. Indexed shifting a triple is more
trouble than its worth. It will need more adjustments and offer less
trim finesse. So, skip the indexing and the ramped rings. I run
friction shifters and good, but no name LBS silver unpinned
rings( 48/34/26) on a DaVinci triple crank and it shifts fine. The
only time I ever have a problem is when I have waited too long to drop
into the granny.

About the gearing. I am considering switching one of bikes
(Rambouillet) from a triple to a 44/30 double with an 11x28, 9 spd
cassette. This will give the same top gear as my 48x12 and only one
gear less on the bottom 30x28 instead of 26x27. One downside I can
see to this is that the 11 will probably wear out pretty quickly. If
that does happen I think I will move the cassette to a bike with a
triple and lock out the 11. Also, the jumps - 12-14-16 - are a little
bigger than the 12x27 spacing - 12,13,14,15,17.

The only objection I have to triples is the extra work cleaning them.
I ride a lot of dirt roads and tired of pulling the whole thing apart
(especially the XD with the hidden bolt) to clean the middle ring.

Why ask the peanut gallery when you could go to the source?
http://www.schwalbetires.com/marathon_supreme

IMO, the Supreme is a nice tire for city riding, gravel riding, loaded
bike riding, etc. Fairly flat-resistant, fairly lightweight, fairly
nice rolling, fairly expensive. Schwalbe makes at least ten other
tires in the vicinity of 700x38 that are also road worthy.

Atlantis. I actually wore out the tread on the Paselas and never had
any problems with the side walls. Both ride nicely. I would say that
the Racers ride a bit smoother; probably just due to the slight
increase in volume, but it could have something to do with the casing
material as well. I don't know if I'd say that the Racers have more
tread than the Supremes. The tread pattern is really shallow and they
almost function as a slick. That said, I've ridden the Racers on
gravel and they perform well. The Racers *seem* to be wearing a little
better than the Paselas so far. I'd say that I like the Racers better
but they're considerably more expensive than the Paselas too.

as long as you have a low enough gear, it will be reasonable.

be aware that if you're looking at a compact with a ring smaller than
a 33, it can get spendy. but the nice bit about a lower gearing
compacts (46x30; 44x28; etc.) is that you can stay in the big ring for
all but really long or really steep climbs.

you could always just run a 48 or 46x34 110bcd compact with a wide
range cassette to get a low enough gear. but it kind of depends on
where your sweet spot is and what kind of riding you're doing. you
might end up shifting a lot between rings with this set up. gearing
is definitely not one-size-fits-all.

i have bikes set up with a 50x34 (11-25), a 48x34 (11-30) and a 44x28
(13-26). all very different bikes for different kinds of riding.

[RBW] Re: Pasela 35/37 or Marathon Racer 38?

2010-04-21 Thread Earl Grey
Interesting, my 6 month old JB Greens measure 33.5mm on Synergies.

I was under the impression that Schwalbe tires run narrow (judging
from a few posts and from rivbike.com which says the 42 ETRTO Supremes
are actually 37.5, the 47 Marathons are actually 41.5 and the 50 Big
Apples are 44.5 (presumably on Synergies, the rim of choice at Riv).
But Michael_S's 42 ETRTO Schwalbe Smart Sams (UK only) measure 41 knob
to knob and 38 wall to sidewall (don't know what rim), so I guess
severe undersizing isn't true for all Schwalbes. Does anyone have a
Racer they can measure to compare stated with actual width?

Cheers,

Gernot

Someone recently asked for the actual width of the 38mm Marathon
Racers. I measured mine with a digital caliper and, as I recall, they
were at about 39mm. They are mounted to Sun Ryno Lite rims, which are

If you haven't done so, I'd pay a visit to Sheldon's Gear Calculator.

http://sheldonbrown.com/gears/

You can play all kinds of "what ifs" there. If you haven't worked with the
units of Gain Ratio or Gear-Inches, it's helpful to enter in some known
setups for reference first.

+1 for spending time with Sheldon's calculator. Great tool.

Make a note of which gears you are actually using. With 20+
combinations, most of us only really use a portion of what's there.
Especially note the highest gear you're comfortable with. You may
find out you've got a cog or 2 at the top end you never use with the
big ring. With 8-9-10 cogs, a double can be perfectly reasonable.
The important thing to understand is what you need for your riding,
and set it up to match.

My touring bike has a triple with wide range gearing, because I never
know what I'll get myself into. My knock around town bike has an old
7 speed and a couple of orphan rings because it really doesn't
matter.

2010-04-21 Thread Earl Grey
Well, yes, I probably should just give up, buy some Hetres and a 650B
bike to go with them. :)

Another (probably ridiculous) option: Schwalbe Furious Freds, 50-622
ETRTO, 335g (!). Tiny knobs, not much rubber, high thread count
casing. Supposedly the fastest mtb tire ever. Anyone try it for mixed
road/off road? Probably won't last very long...

Those Furious Freds look fun. I love trying out tires. Those would
be a kick to try. $170 for a pair is a pretty expensive experiment,
though. I'd almost pray that I don't like them.

Oddly, I don't have that many by most standards...

I have my Bob Brown custom, a Big Dummy and a Pugsley. And, of
course, as of last night, down in my basement, an unearthed Rivendell
Bleriot.

To the fella that asked: sure, I can take some fotos as I build her
up. That would be fun!

To the other fella in PDX... yes indeedy, love to go for a ride!

I certainly agree with skipping the indexing for front shifting, but if

[RBW] Re: Silver Shifter Adjustment

2010-04-21 Thread William
Any fabric store has beeswax for thread waxing, so you can get it
faster than Riv will ship it to you. The fabric store size is
particularly handy in that it's a 2" diameter flat disc so it's easy
to hold and to scratch onto any bolt. It's also convenient in that it
stays pretty clean in a little plastic case. The dixie cup quantity
is neither of those things, although I suppose you could heat it up
and make it whatever shape you want.

[RBW] Road Bike Tire Size Data

2010-04-21 Thread rperks
As we all know there tends to be an obsession over tire size data,
actual vs stated, etc. I started a group on Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/groups/1410...@n21/
for pooling photo data of actual measurements. I alm also hoping to
pool data into a spread sheet similar to this one:
http://spreadsheets.google.com/ccc?key=pZl-EANnWYi7hiDUv_KjoLw
for 650B, but make it inclusive of all sizes generally used on the
road. I figure this will help the retentive among us with our online
purchases and conversion projects as well.

If this is already being done point me in the right direction and we
can combine forces.

[RBW] Dynamo Hub and Light - Novatech by Velo Orange?

2010-04-21 Thread Trent in TX
Hey there,

Does anyone have experience with the Velo Orange Novatech Dynamo hub?
At $50, it seems like a good value. Everything that I've bought from
Velo Orange in the past has been quality, and the product description
leads me to think that this is no exception.

http://www.velo-orange.com/nodyhub.html

As far as lights go, the Inoled from peterwhite cycles looks like a
winner. I know I want to go LED.

http://www.velo-orange.com/nodyhub.html

Any input is much appreciated!

Thanks,

[RBW] Re: Bullmoose on a Hillborne

2010-04-21 Thread Johnny Alien
Wow. There is alot of great info here. So the Hillborne is much
tougher than I originally though.

As far as the double top tube on the Hunqapillar...I typically ride a
53 frame which means I would need the 48 Hunqapillar (if that's what I
go with) which would not have the double top tube anyway.

Tough call..the Hunqa looks GREAT built up that way on the site but an
orange hillborne with big wheels and Bullmoose bars would probably
look equally great.

[RBW] Schmidt/B&M Bulbs for Sale

2010-04-21 Thread Eric Norris
I've switched to LED lighting, and have a number of spare bulbs to fit schmidt
E6 and B&M Lumotec headlights that I no longer need. I'm not sure if these are
the 2.4 or 3-watt versions (see
http://www.peterwhitecycles.com/schmidt-headlights.asp#bulbs). Peter White
sells them for $4.50 to $5.50; I'll send them to you for $2.50 each including
postage. Limited quantities--contact me offline if you're interested.

[RBW] Wind!

2010-04-21 Thread PATRICK MOORE
A Sam Hill with big, boxy Axiom Panniers and a big, boxy Ostrich bag is a
barn door in our spring winds. I just rode 8 miles in the hooks straight
south into a southerly "28 g 35". This builds patience and strength of
character.

The Axioms -- half price at AE Bike, $44 -- are big, drape-over Dutch-style
shopping panniers, just one big empty space on each side with no annoying
side pockets, zippers, compartments or cinches: just good old fashioned
emptiness, big enough with room to spare for a full paper grocery sack,
each; and a fitted flap with two, simple fastek buckles. I'll take photos
when I get the attachments for my new Canon.

Probably not up to touring, but better than my Ortleib Packers for shopping.

Oh, and big bar bags act like wind rudders in gusty sidewinds; keep a firm
grip on your bar!

[RBW] Re: OT: Respect you wheel builder, Rich to be exact

2010-04-21 Thread RonLau
OK, this can get me in trouble. Keep in mind this is MY option. YMMV
of course.

Rich crossed US before (he is talking about doing it again btw), he
knows touring bike, and what kind of wheels you need. He also has a
tandem, xtracycle and other all rounders type of bike. So he knows
touring and what to make a wheel last.

Len used to race, tubulars world. Currently his Della Santa is Dura
Ace 10s with Downtube index shifter.

I can say all my Rich wheels NEVER has a problem before, has not true
them once, no broken spokes. Some of the road in SF can be a little
rough.

I also have wheels Len build, a set of Campy Centuar hub with FIR Tour
rim, he trued them once after 10 years. The nipples are turing green
but I plan on riding them until something break. He build a Chorus/OP
wheel for me, it

So, IMHO, either one can build you a set of wheels that last a long
time. They come from different background but their wheels last for
me. For ref. I weight 165 and most of my wheels are 32 spokes, a few
28 and a few 36.

Well, not necessarily. I have two of the biggest handlebar bags out
there, Gilles Berthoud GB28 and 2886. They're considerably larger than
an Ostrich bag: 260mm wide, 220mm tall, and 200mm deep for the Ostrich,
Height: 270mm, Width without pockets: 270mm, Depth without front pocket:
145mm. On a low trail bike like my Kogswell P/R or my Velo Orange
Randonneur, gusty sidewinds do not yank the bars around.

[RBW] Re: fatter tires for 26" wheels

2010-04-21 Thread JGS
I second the 1.5 Marathon Racers. I run them on my Atlantis in NYC.
When I first got the bike I was running 1.5 inch Paselas and they felt
slow. I switched to 1.25 T-Servs. I liked them but somehow wanted
something cushier. The Racers feel very fast and cushier. I'd be
curious to try the 1.5 Paselas again to see if I was fair to them.
The Racers have flatted on me a couple of times while i never ever got
a flat with the T-Servs.

[RBW] Re: Guess I don't get down to the basement much

2010-04-21 Thread velomann
In my basement, all I discovered was that the litter box needs
changing, and that the Peugeot mixte, the Rockhopper, the abandoned-by-
a-homeless-person-on-my-front-lawn Motobecane mixte, and the 83' Trek
are all still waiting to be rebuilt. Couldn't find a Rivy anywhere,
and I was so sure...

Scott and MJ, I'm in too on the ride. Let's make it happen soon. Wish
the OR's had a populaire planned, but we can always do our own.
Probably would get to sleep in a bit if we did.

And Scott, I think you and your daughter should consider volunteering
as "intersection superheroes" for a Sunday Parkways event. Bring your
sticks, a plastic bucket or 2, and a bunch of sidewalk chalk. And
maybe a cape or 2. Just an idea.

Re: [RBW] Guess I don't get down to the basement much

2010-04-21 Thread Robert F. Harrison
I live in an apartment...no basement at all. But...we do have a shared
storage space.

Apparently sometime back in the late 90's I'd stashed a local brand (back
when more stores labeled their own) ATB (remember all terrain bikes?). Last
year the building manager reminded me it was there and told me to move it or
lose it. I turned it into a my first single speed since I was a kid. I like
it so much I bought my Quickbeam which will not be going into the storage
space. :-)

I ride it all the time, especially when I've got to leave a bike locked up
outside, though I have Riv'd it up a bit with fenders, a Brooks B17, Grip
King pedals, and a brass bell; which where any resemblance to a Bleriot
ends.

[RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none

2010-04-21 Thread happyriding
Good point about constantly needing the in between gears. The problem
is I don't know where that is for a touring bike. I only have a road
bike, which is set up with a 53x39 and 13-29, which works well for me
in all types of terrain.

I was thinking about the possibility of coupling the pending Velo
Orange Gran Cru crank ($125), which is a 46x30 double, with a
Rivendell/Shimano 12-36 9 speed cassette. That would result in a
lower top end than a 53x13 (110.1 v. 103.5).

Any comments on whether that is practical? Are doubles just not used
for touring bikes?

Thanks.

So try loading up your road bike with 20 lb of rocks in a bag and see
how that affects your overall gearing. I'd guess you'll need a gear
probably 2 shifts lower for any given incline over what you'd need
unloaded.

[RBW] FS: Power Grips, NEW

2010-04-21 Thread David Hallerman

Hi,

I have a set of Power Grips for sale, black, new.

Were installed, but never used -- even for one ride -- and removed.

Complete with all hardware.

Here's a view:

http://www.bikeman.com/store/graphics/0001/Alt-imageB/TS/TS5000B.jpg

Price = $21, with Priority Mail shipping included to CONUS

PayPal best way to pay.

Thanks,

Dave, who never used these Power Grips because between the time he
installed them on the off-bike pedals and the time he thought about
using them became permanently attached to SPD clipless pedals
metaphorically speaking of course

Re: [RBW] Re: Bullmoose on a Hillborne

2010-04-21 Thread andrew hill
I'll say that my Hillborne, with 40 Maraton Supremes, rides like a tank.

A really expensive tank, with amazing suspension. The Deore XTs and Mavic
A719s and 36h lacing might have something to do with that, too.

I'm 200+ and typically ride with a timbuktu and a left pannier, lock/cables,
etc... haven't ever felt a more glossy ride from a bike, though i can still
feel the road perfectly, if that makes any sense.
because it's so "sturdy" i do find it's much more important to unweight the
seat on this bike or i get bounced, but that's more about my riding skills than
anything.

They might. I once got a pinned large ring by mistake and whenever I

A Sam Hill with big, boxy Axiom Panniers and a big, boxy Ostrich bag is a barn
door in our spring winds. I just rode 8 miles in the hooks straight south into
a southerly "28 g 35". This builds patience and strength of character.

The Axioms -- half price at AE Bike, $44 -- are big, drape-over Dutch-style
shopping panniers, just one big empty space on each side with no annoying side
pockets, zippers, compartments or cinches: just good old fashioned emptiness,
big enough with room to spare for a full paper grocery sack, each; and a fitted
flap with two, simple fastek buckles. I'll take photos when I get the
attachments for my new Canon.

Probably not up to touring, but better than my Ortleib Packers for shopping.
Oh, and big bar bags act like wind rudders in gusty sidewinds; keep a firm grip
on your bar!

I have quite a few bikes with bar end shifting and ramped and pinned
chain rings, and in my experience, they shift better than unramped,
unpinned chain rings. And I've never experienced pins snagging chains
or making annoying noises.

As always, YMMV...

[RBW] Re: cranks: ramps and pins v. none

2010-04-21 Thread amoll68
Hap,

Loaded touring bike: you're probably gonna want that triple AND a big
cassette in the rear - unless you don't mind resting or walking (Kent
Petersen's "24 inch gear") when you totally bonk on that big climb.

On my AHH country bike/sport tourer with a light load: I LOVE my TA
46-30, Simplex SLJ up front, 12-27 Ultergra/Dura Ace rear. I live and
ride in the Cascade Foothills, and can think of only one occasion
where I've used the lowest gear. I occasionally use my second lowest
gear, but spend most of my time in the big ring on the rolling hills.
It's by far my favorite gearing setup, and I've tried (and have) a lot
of different setups. However, I don't think this would be ideal for a
long tour with a heavy load.

WRT the 46-30 and the 12-36 rear: it might work okay, might even work
well. I have a feeling the trick may be finding the right front
derailleur, and I'm thinking something from the 70's or 80's with a
wide cage. I first tried a modern FSA compact for my Hilsen setup, and
never could get it dialed in right (rubbing problems, and some
shifting problems.) The old Simplex SLJ doesn't appear to have the
correct radius for the 46T ring, but it works great!

Trial and error can be fun - especially when you create that winning
combo, but it can also be frustrating and expensive. Good luck!

Alex
