backblaze and voiceover
Hello All: I am considering purchasing Backblaze and have some questions. I am a bit hesitant because they do not publish a customer support phone number and they don't say anything about accessibility on their web site. Thus, I would like to hear from the group about your experiences as follows: 1. I did the preliminary backup as part of the 15 day free trial. I found the interface to select drives tricky to use so I am not sure exactly what is selected for backup and what is excluded. 2. Naturally, the ultimate objective of having such a service is to be able to restore files in case of a problem. I went to the view and restore files interface but was also not able to find things like documents, desktop, downloads etc. How does this work and is the restore process accessible? If so, how is it done with voiceover? 3. What is people's experience with their customer support? Are they responsive? Do they have enough knowledge to be conversant about how to perform functions using voiceover? Replying off list is fine in order to reduce clutter on the list. My email is: radioforever @gmail.com Many thanks in advance for your help. backblaze
Hello All: Thank you for the responses to my question but I am still having trouble with choosing the disk drive to back up. In the settings of Backblaze you can choose which disk drives to back up. When I interact with the table where they are listed, I get an error message saying that I can’t exclude my computer hard drive. No other parts of this table appear to be accessible. When I look at the number of files that have already been backed up it doesn’t seem to match the number of files on my drives. I have given it full disk access through the security settings on my Mac but nothing has changed. If someone could walk me through this process either on or off list I would be most appreciative. MS Word and track changes
Hello All: I just started using ms word for mac and I need to be able to read and interact with comments and track changes. The problem is that voiceover is not reading the annotations in the text that indicate where a revision has taken place. Any ideas? Ms Word and comments/track changes
I am also interested in this thread. I find 2 problems: 1. Although I can make the comments appear I can not reliably move back and forth between the comment and the exact place in the text to which the comment applies with voiceover. 2. My understanding is that voiceover is supposed to indicate places in a document where there is a track change by saying anotation. I can not get mine to do that. Any help with these two questions would be appreciated. Jean -- The following information is important for all members of the Mac Visionaries list. using powerpoint with voiceover on Mac
Hello All: I want to show slides using the slide show function in Microsoft Powerpoint. When I am in slide show mode however, the slides do not advance properly when voiceover is on. When voiceover is turned off the slides advance correctly. I have also tried using the space bar for this and also p for previous and n for next with the same result. Sorry but using Windows is not an option. The same slide show works fine with Keynote leading me to conclude that it is a powerpoint/voiceover issue. Is this a bug? Sometimes the screen share doesn’t go directly to vlc or quicktime though so it would be difficult to know where you are when command shifting around. Re: system voice irritation
Jonathan: Would that turn on quicktime from anywhere? The problems isn’t really starting play but navigating from zoom to the video player. If quick time or whatever could be started from zoom that would make it possible to turn off voice over thereby eliminating the possibility of the system voice interfering with things. VLC is a bit easier to manage. For whatever reason, the hot keys in Quicktime have never worked correctly for me. yahoo groups question
Hello All: I want to subscribe to a yahoo group. In the past you could send a blank email message to something subscribe @ yahoo groups.com. You would insert the name of the group in the email address. Since it has been so long since I had to do this I can't remember the exact syntax. If someone could give me the correct way to do this I would be most appreciative. Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. update question
Hello All: I finally updated to Mavericks prompted by the security thing. So, I have a couple of questions both regarding email. First of all, the sounds are not working properly. I no longer get a sound when I am at the top or bottom of the list of messages. I looked in sounds in system preferences for mail and everything appears to be checked properly. The second thing is that this morning I had about 30 messages in my inbox. When I looked just now there are only about 15. Where did they go and how do I get them back? weird Skype behaviour on i phone
Hello All: I went to use Skype on my i phone today and noticed two odd things. I am using the latest update which came out about two days ago. First, when I open the online contacts screen, it doesn't show the entire list of people who are online. It begins half way down the list. Second, the audio is not working properly, it begins ok but then becomes very slow and not understandable. Any ideas? Is there a problem with this update that they might fix soon, like yesterday? stability of the mac
Hello to the person who is thinking of making the switch to mac: I did this about a year ago and here are my thoughts. First of all, the reason I switched was similar to that of other people, my PC became inoperable one to many times and it was at a time when I was to have begun an online teaching assignment. I came very close to losing my job because getting the PC laptop repaired/replaced and then everything restored took so long. It was a total disaster! The learning curve was steep for me and it took about two months to return to any semblance of efficiency. I am sure it is shorter for many people and longer for others. So, during the transition, it would be helpful to allow for the time and energy it will take to learn the new system and screen reader. There are fantastic resources on this list for getting help. These include several people who are authorised by Apple to teach the Mac using Voiceover. Keep in mind however, that Apple does not pay for this training and although it is reasonably priced, this is one area where Apple could do better. I live close to an Apple store and although I had the One to One training the first year I had my Mac, I did not renew it. I found that the trainers were very knowledgeable about the Mac but not about Voiceover. I receive far superior information from this list without leaving home. If you live near an Apple store you also have access to something called a Genious Bar. If you are having some difficulty with your computer, after an upgrade for example, you can take it to them and get it sorted out for free. Apple has phone support which others on this list have much more experience with than I do. In general, working with and maintaining the Mac is a much more streamlined process than a PC. For example, my disk drive bit the dust the last time I was working in India. Because I have Apple Care, it was replaced with no charge but I found that the restoration process was a thousand times easier and less time-consuming than it ever was on the PC. Apple has Time Machine which makes a backup of your disk including data which you use to restore the system. If you haven't backed up in a while, it even reminds you to do it. So, if you do switch to the Mac, be sure and allow yourself time to integrate the new knowledge systematically. I for one, would never even consider returning to using a PC. But if for some reason I had to, I would either use bootcamp or VM Fusion instead of going back to a computer environment which is so unstable and unpredictable. To me, using a PC became unviable in my work environment so it had to go. The only thing I find more difficult with Mac is using Skype. On the PC you can use GW Connect which manages voice and text chatting tasks very well. When I called GW Micro to ask them if they would make a Mac version, I thought they were going to hang up on me. So, that is the only compromise I feel I have made. Good luck with your decision and keep asking us questions. Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. os reinstalled multiple questions
Hello All: Last Thursday my Mac got fried in a power surge in which my disk drive was blown out. Yes I had a surge protector and yes Applle care paid for the replacement of my disk drive. It took a week because they had to send to Bangalore for replacement and it took time. Then the Time machine wouldn't restore properly because they installed a version of Mountain Lion just prior to the one I had and didn't find it useful to tell me that. Go figure. Anyway, I have it back now and after being forced to use a borrowed windows computer for a week I am very glad to finally have it back. So now, I have a lot of questions about how to get things back the way they were prior to the crash. I will begin with the fundamentals and work my way down to the refinements later. 1. For whatever reason time machine restored my data and email but would not restore either my apps or bookmarks. Is there a place in the app store where I can find my previous downloads and reinstall them? I am currently in India and all I get when I go to the app store is a lot of nonsense about games and nothing I care about. Naturally, there is a lot of stuff on there about Mavericks but I have enough problems at present without that. See, I have been reading this list while I was in windows hell. I just want things back the way they were, thank you. I try to get onto the US site and can't make any headway. Suggestions please? 2. Where do I find the voiceover voices? I want Serena back! 3. I think my email is restored properly but I want the most recent messages at the bottom of theithe list. I have uncheck the box for having the most recent at the top of the list but there doesn't seem to be an option for having them at the bottom. 4. Because my settings didn't restore I have to redo my web settings but I can't remember what they were. Any general settings I should apply to make life easier? I think those are the big one's for now pending my discovering new fundamental changes later on. As always, all help is appreciated. external disk drives
Hello All: First of all, I want to thank everyone for your help on my various computer restoration issues over the weekend. I am happy to report that everything is now back to normal. A big part of the reason why it is back to normal relates to the discussion on external drives. I have them of course, including one I purchased from the Apple store. I carry two with me when traveling as one is only for time machine. The drives are very small so don't take up much room. My Seagate drive is more of a desktop size and stays at home. The reason for all this explanation is to say that my time machine restoration was not perfect. For whatever reason it would not restore bookmarks, contacts, settings, program files or several other necessary elements. It was only because I had iCloud and Carbonite that everything got restored. This three-pronged backup strategy worked well for me as this was the smoothest computer recovery I have ever had. All of this is to say that I would not be comfortable with data backups only on hard drives. Things go wrong and they certainly did in my situation. In the end, each of the three backups had part of what I needed and the Apple programs I had purchased were conveniently available on the Apple web site. I am very glad I utilised all of these strategies. As I have said on this list before, Carbonite gets my last dime. They have always been there for me, have outstanding customer service and provide a lot of peace of mind. carbonite restore on the mac
Max and All: The restore process was ok for the most part. When you log into their web site you can have your files appear in a browser format. You then choose to restore all the files or selected files. I am a fairly new mac user and found the process wasn't to difficult. If you have to have a remote session, things can be a little more complicated. You have to download a program to allow them access and the allow button can be difficult to find and has a timer. If you get to a higher level of customer service reps you can get someone who can bypass this allow function if you just can't manage it. searching in app store
Hi Eugenia: I have had the same problem. I thought it was due to the 2 g network being to slow. I don't have a wireless to try it on at the moment but the next time I encounter one I will try again. I also thought it was because I have a lot of app updates waiting in the cue but since others are having the same problem I don't know if that is a factor. I am using i phone 5 with the latest iOS update. Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. apple working on voiceover
Hello: If there are any beta testers on this list for the upcoming release, the one I most hope they fix is in Safari. Command left bracket and command left arrow go back a page but you don't land in the place where you left off. This is really annoying. strange safari problem
Hello All: Well I don't know what to think of this. All of a sudden Safari won't open any google search pages. For example, I enter a search string for a search and Safari says it can't open the page because it is unauthentic or some such thing. It says something about certificates. I know that Apple and Google have not always gotten along but really, must they do it on my computer? I went to privacy and security settings but can't figure out what to change. Safari won't even close properly now, I had to do a force quit.Help please, Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. pages question
All: I want to take some documents from my computer and read them on my i phone. I am told that one way to accomplish this is to import the documents into pages on the i phone where they can be edited etc. However, pages only gives two choices for adding documents, one is from i tunes and the other is through some kind of server that I don't understand. I was really hoping that dropbox would be an option but it isn't unless there is a way to add dropbox to the choices available. So what is the best way to import these documents? If I tunes is the only way to do it, could someone give me step by step directions for how to put documents in i tunes? I tried adding them to the library but they don't show up. resetting safari
Hello Theresa and All Theresa, there are no boneheaded recommendations and yours was certainly one that could be easily overlooked. I have tried it though to no avail. Before I reset Safari, which appears to be necessary, what are the steps? I opened up the dialogue to have a look and got as far as it saying you can't undo this process or something, and stopped. I don't want to lose my bookmarks that is for sure. It sounds as though warnings should be reset although it is actually preventing me from connecting to pages even when I tell it to continue. Maybe the question is really does resetting safari do anything to bookmarks? What else should I know? more on safari problem
Hi: Ok I reset Safari twice but that hasn't solved anything. The warning says that Safari can't establish a secure connection to whatever server belongs to the web page I am trying to open. It also says things like certificates are invalid or that site has no certificate. This seems to me like something in privacy and security settings got disrupted. I went there but can't make any sense of the options. It does seem to open at least some of the sites in my bookmarks but this is really a pain. Other ideas? safari all better now
Tyler: That fixed it, well done! You were correct, my date and time were not set correctly and I put it on automatic. Sometimes things get a little weird when changing time zones. And, since I had my disk drive replaced in India but the computer still thinks it is in North America, I guess it got confused. Now when I open Safari all the Apple India links come up instead of the one's for North America or Europe. Anne and All: Anne, thank you for your clear directions about transferring documents through I tunes into pages on my i phone. I did it once but I can't seem to do it again. bookmarks hidden
Hello All: Well somehow it has happened again. I go to my bookmarks and they are hidden somehow. The "new bookmarks" which is where they are is checked. If I stop interacting with the left hand table and arrow to the right, the next thing is a search field. Continuing to the right is a horizontal splitter. What is supposed to come next is a table listing all my bookmarks but this is missing. Instead what comes next is something called new collection. When I interact with the horizontal splitter it says that something is collapsed. I don't know if that has anything to do with why I can't see my bookmarks or not. Anyway, all help is appreciated. bookmarks again
Hello All: My bookmark problem has returned but this time I can't get it unstuck. My folder of new bookmarks is checked. Just to the right of the search box is the horizontal splitter. When I wrote about this problem several weeks ago, that splitter said zero when I interact d with it and hitting up arrow would make the bookmarks show up properly. embossing from the mac
Sherryl: I have also tried Louis but couldn't figure it out either. I could go through the steps of translating a file I guess but could never find the translated file. There didn't seem to be a place to specify where the output file should go. So I gave up on it and went back to using Robo Braille. The problem with that is that you need to be connected to the internet and there is apparently no way to translate from Braille to print. Any insights about how to specify where the output file should go would be appreciated. Then again, it is possible I was doing something else wrong. I found no good documentation and writing to the developers yielded no results. Maybe I will try it again as I would like to have a braille translator that can be used off line. . calendar alert
All: I do appreciate your sticking with me to try to figure out this problem. I am using VO calendar because I find the it much easier to use than the one on the i phone itself. However, it is attached directly to the native calendar. All the events appear in the native calendar as if I had put them in their directly. I checked in VO calendar settings as suggested in one of the last postings and there is no setting for ensure the alarms are connected. Then I check in the regular i phone settings and VO calendar has no entry there. I like this app a lot and hope I don't have to give up my alarms in order to use it. Hi: This was originally about the Jawbone earpieces. Yesterday I was at the Apple store and they had some of the Jabra earpieces there. I purchased a Jabra Clear and like it very much. contacts manager in i phone
Hello All: I am having no end of trouble with the contacts manager on the i phone. Finding a contact is ok for the most part although trying to slog through the letter headings is annoying. My current problem is how to add a contact. When I open up the add contacts thing the first thing it wants to know is whether I want to add a photo. Whatever. Then it has a field for last name and then first name. Somehow when I try to enter the last name in the last name field ten the first name in the first name field they both end up in the last name field. Next comes company then mobile button. Thinking this is where I put someone's mobile number I tap this and get some nonsense about labels If I cancel this and return to the add contact dialogue I find a mobile phone text field that was not there previously. This text field contains a keypad I guess but then when I return to the add contact screen once again I have to go all the way to the done field in order to hopefully save the contact. There has to be a better way. Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. contacts manager
All: This was very helpful but it is still a pain. Is there a way to just ad a mobile number without going in to the labels thing and back out? Somehow I am not seeing the field for the phone number unless I go into the label thing first. Also, I am written to the people who made VO Calendar and implored them to make a contacts manager. They said they want to. If others are interested perhaps additional emails could make it happen. contacts manager
Tim and All: I think I've got it! Maybe. Navigating on the right side of the screen is clearly one key. I was having trouble scrolling through the alphabet because if I didn't scroll in exactly a straight line I would end up somewhere else. Also, being able to choose the fields on the right side is very helpful. Now I think one more question will finish it. After I have entered something in a field in the add contacts thing, do I have to hit done after each field is filled in or can I go right to the next field? Thanks everyone for all your help with the various questions I have posed. This list has been a great place to continue learning. Thanks in no small amount to you guys, things are coming along much better. I still want a better contacts manager from the VO calendar people (just in case they monitor this list), but I can manage for now I suppose. earpieces
Hi Nick: I have not used it with the mac that extensively so I don't know if I can answer your questions. I have mostly used it with my i phone. I have only begun experimenting with sound input and output in system preferences. I know that I turn on bluetooth and connect the earpiece it connects right away. That is the receiving part. I do know that you have to go to system preferences to select the correct input in order to enable the microphone. Otherwise it defaults to the computer built-in mic. There doesn't appear to be a setting to automatically select the earpiece mic by default when bluetooth is turned on and the earpiece is activated. If you have further specific questions I can experiment as directed and report results. Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. earpieces
Hi Nick: Assuming that bluetooth is already turned on, as soon as you connect the earpiece voiceover and all other audio come through the earpiece. It is necessary to disconnect it properly to get voiceover to resume coming through the speakers of the computer. Otherwise you get a bluetooth error message. I have not quite figured out the procedure for disconnected it correctly, I will have to have someone look in the manual for that. But I do know that you can not simply turn it off. i phone discussion
Karen and all: For the possible benefit of anyone thinking about switching to the i phone, I am happy to explain my experience. I purchased my i phone in mid April but did not change my mobile provider until early May. I did this so that I could become used to how the i phone functioned and using the touch screen before vital transactions depended on my ability to use the phone. I am very glad I did this. Another thing that has helped is a screen protector with raised dots sold by Speed Dots. I know there are some who assert this should not be necessary however, I believe we should use what makes sense for us as individuals. I find that it provides landmarks for orientation on the screen. I have been told that one must have access to the internet in order for siri to work. Perhaps someone on the list can confirm this? If this is the case, then utilizing siri for making calls etc would work as long as an internet connection is available. This might not be a problem for many but for me, it is necessary that I know how to manage without siri as well as with it. I have gotten pretty good at using my i phone and while I still find making calls involving many number sequences problematic at times, it is offset by the other things the i phone does well. I don't know how to input menu sequences such as those described by someone earlier. Perhaps you could give us the steps to do this? Finally, as a new user I am happy to answer any questions about the learning curve, at least from my perspective. All: Thank you so much for the dropbox help. I installed it with problem. Now, I have also put it on my i phone. Where do I find the folder where the documents are? Also, how to I initiate an upload to dropbox from my I phone? I am making more progress each day thanks to all of you. dropbox
Thanks Alex for your reply. What I want to do for now is to be able to upload and download files from my drop boxes on both i phone and mac. So I opened a document that was in my dropbox on my i phone and tapped actions. It said I had to do something in settings to allow it to access my photos. Not sure what is going on, it seems a bit convoluted to me. I think what would help would be a step by step explanation of how to do this in both directions. So the objective is to be able to transfer documents between both devices. I also obtained a program called file drive but I want to use dropbox because of the storage and ability to give access to a third party. All help is most welcome and thanks, Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. saving in text edit
All: Ok hopefully this has a simple answer. When I am in text edit and I want to save a file I do command S. The problem is that sometimes it saves and sometimes I get the save as dialogue. email question
Hello: Suddenly when I open an email message I am not going directly into the body of the message. Instead I land on the message headers. This is annoying because I have to interact with the text which isn't a big deal but it is just one more step in what should be a simple matter of hitting enter on a message and having it open. This is new behavior. Any ideas? Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. bbd accessibility guide
Hello: Several weeks ago someone posted a document from the BBC on making web sites accessible for screen readers. I saved that document at the time but try as I might I simply can not find it. question of the day, page count in text edit
All: I have looked and can't find it. How do I get a page count in text edit? I have seen it for documents I have opened from other sources but can't find it for a document I am writing. audio editing program
Hello All: I am in need of a simple audio editing program for the mac. What I need to accomplish is to be able to cut and paste audio clips, convert from wav to mp3, and possibly some simple mixing. For example, I would like to be able to put two audio files together and have them both play either on one single channel or one on the left and one on the right. I probably do not need to equalize a great deal at present. What suggestions do people have? Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. a small gps victory
Dear all: After listening to Mike Orego's podcast on using google maps I decided to give it a try. As it turned out I am very glad I did. Last Saturday evening, middle of the night really, I was returning to Pasadena from Urvine California where I had been attending a conference with some friends. None of us were familiar with the Los Angeles freeway system, possibly the largest, most complex freeway system in the world, and we became hopelessly lost. So upon request from the driver of the car I got out my new I-Phone, opened up google maps, found our location and successfully navigated us all back to Pasadena where we belonged. I never thought in a million years I would ever be called upon to navigate the L A freeways but I have done it and plan to do it some more. Just thought I would share, Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. small gps victory
Hello: About using google maps solo I had no problem. This is with the new up-date so perhaps the version you were using was an old one? The podcast done by Mike Orego where he compared several gps apps was very helpful. The only difficulty I found was that sometimes the directions came to close to where the turns need to be made. There is a way to get a route overview however which would provide the entire set of directions before setting out. I will utilize this next time. I chose not to use Blind Square that time because there were people in the car who could see landmarks and it was an emergency. So being unfamiliar of how the two programs work together I didn't want to experiment just then. Also, I did the same thing again the next day to help someone move and was equally as successful. keynote question
Anne Robinson and others: Thanks for the info about Keynote. Now a question. Is there any way to read the slides while in play or slideshow mode? Also, what is the best way to review the slides with voiceover. I notice they do read in the editor after some complicated navigation I can kind of figure them out but a more streamlined approach would be appreciated. Off-list communication about this is also ok. carbonite
Hello All: I am responding to the thread about Carbonite. At present, there is no facility for backing up external drives. However, I am told this will change with a new release. gps
Hi Sherrie: That is a great story. For me, gps is an equalizer. Especially when the driver is in an area they don't know, it is difficult for them to use gps and drive safely at the same time. It gives us an important role to play instead of just being along for the ride. Jean -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. interacting
Hi All: I have noticed a change in voiceover lately which is most annoying. In the email program, when I hit enter to open a message, voiceover used to automatically interact with the text of the message. Now that doesn't happen. Instead, it lands on the message headers and I have to specifically interact with the message text. The same thing happens if I hit tab instead of enter. Any ideas what might be going on?
