Iphone 5 keeps going into recovery mode despite successful restore
Yesterday, while rock climbing, my iPhone 5, in my pocket, got put into recovery mode. I discovered it when we got home, and went through the steps and successfully restored it from the latest Icloud backup. Got all my apps back, Voiceover the way I wanted, home screen set up in the folder structure, everything except, of course, the data, such as BARD Mobile books, music, pictures and videos, etc. I locked it and left it on the table and, when I came back to it this morning, it was in the same state of recovery mode that I had restored it from last night. Right now, the phone is connected to my Macbook Pro, and Itunes is still saying, "Itunes is restoring the software on this iphone." My wife, Amy, says that there is an apple on the iPhone 5 screen, and a line which would be a status bar, but there is no progress indicator. My Internet connection is a Charter Cable (max 60 MBPS) connection and is in all other ways working normally. My MBP13 (2008 model but working fine) is running Mountain Lion and the next-to-latest build of Itunes. I do not understand why, after restoring successfully, the phone went back to recovery mode, nor do I know how to finish the restore. Once I do finish the restore, I am unsure of how to save the settings such that when I lock the phone again, it will come out of locked screen, as it has for the past year, working just fine. Can someone shed any light on this? Thanks. iPhone 5 stuck in restore mode with Itunes
Itunes has been saying it's restoring my iPhone 5 for about 6 hours now. There is no indication of any progress. Its software was up to date (IOS7.1.1) when it went into recovery mode. My Mac is an older (2008) MBP15 running Mountain Lion and the build of Itunes before the latest. Nothing seems to be working. What the HECK do I do with this thing, other than blow it up or toss it under a train? * Mark BurningHawk Baxter * AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 * MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com * My home page: * http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: iPhone 5 stuck in restore mode with Itunes
Holding down the home and power/lock button knocked it out of its frozen state and back to the successful restored state I had it back to last night. All is solved, except of course for the lost data, most of which is stored elsewhere anyway. Re: Typing On The IPhone's On-Screen Keyboard
I prefer the iPhone's keyboard to that of the iPad, just because the keyboard on the pad is more spread out. I use my right ;index and middle finger, depending on which side of the keyboard the next letter or symbol will be located. I am not as fast as my sighted wife, AMy Three Deer, but I'm good enough that I can type out middle-length E-mails or notes or whatever. I use Dictation for anything very complicated, though. Interestingly, for those of you who may be using hearing aids with a Bluetooth connection to a streaming device, such as the Phonak Com Pilot ((tm)) and accompanying hearing aids, the newest generation of Com Pilot streamer is smart enough to recognize that it's connecting to "Mark's iPhone," and when I use dictation, Voiceover uses the channel usually used for receiving incoming phone calls. I find that the whole process of typing feedback over the BT connection is much faster when this secondary channel is utilized, but it can be slow if you're using the streamer in a music mode. The tech really has come a long way. Yosemite worth it or not?
I'm seriously busy with family life, and so I've skipped Mavericks. Running the good old dependable mountain kitty, and still mostly purring along. However, I feel like I should keep up with the OS upgrades, but is Yosemite worth it? Will I have to spend a whole weekend tinkering to get it right, and is accessibility improved, the same or worse? I haven't even got the latest version of Itunes due to what I'm hearing about problems with accessibility. I'm a pretty advanced Mac user, but don't want the headache of a weekend spent geeking out just to get my E-mail. Re: Yosemite worth it or not?
Heh. See how out of the loop I am? Guess I'll just bail on Mavericks. I totally missed the WWDC yesterday and only saw a blurb about a new iPhone on the news this morning on my way by. My iPhone 5 is currently down and going in for repair (something about moisture damage through the Otterbox docking station port, blah blah blah) so Yeah. Continued iPhone 5 malfing weirdness
A couple of weeks ago, I requested help diagnosing what was wrong with my iPhone 5, running IOS7.1.1. After trying unsuccessfully to restore it through Itunes, I took it to a local repair place. They swapped out the ports, microphone and battery, claiming there was dried moisture causing a short and compromising the battery. I took it home, and everything worked fine; restored it to its latest backup, even downloaded a few Bard Mobile books. Put it on the charger (which I KNOW workdd, because it charged my iPad 2 successfully) and, when I woke up this morning at six, it was dead agin. Itunes reports that it's in recovery mode, but I have not tried another restore, because I'm going to take it back to the local repair place today as is. Has anyone else experienced similar problems? Does this remind anyone of anything? I just spent $155 to fix this bugger, and since the parts he installed are obviously not the problem, I doubt I'll get my money back, which means I am ... peeved... Re: Continued iPhone 5 malfing weirdness
This is not just a question of VoiceOver not working. My wife, who is sighted, confirms that the Apple icon does not even pop up, nor does the status bar appear. It would seem that the iPhone is acting as if it is totally powered down and will not come up. When I connect it to Itunes, I'm told that my software is up to date, and given the option to restore. I have not done so this time, as restoring in the past has fixed nothing. I am going to take it back to the repair place which charged me $155 to replace the battery and damaged docking port / Thunderbolt pins (he claims moisture damage) and show him the phone that won't power up. If Voiceover is the problem, then it's causing the whole phone to crash, which doesn't make sense to me. Plus, now, there's no way to turn VO off, because the phone is completely unusable. What could be happening, during an attempted backup to Icloud during the night, which might cause this sort of unrecoverable crash? That's my only theory. Maybe I'll have the repair person let the phone sit on his counter, plugged in and connected to the network (provided he can get it working and talking again), and see if the problem is duplicated. None of the other devices that use my network are having this problem. Lock Rotation on an iPad 2 *WHERE* in control center?
Yesterday, some counseled me that I could lock my iPad 2's rotation to portrayed mode from the Control Center. I've looked in Control Center, and see nothing relevant to it. Nope. I have, in Control Center, the track position and title of whatever musical selection is playing; then I have Airplane mode off, WIFI on, Bluetooth on, Do not disturb off, Mute off, Clock, Camera, Airdrop and Brightness. Re: Lock Rotation on an iPad 2 *WHERE* in control center?
Hi, Thuy: I have noted the side switch set to lock rotation within Settings. However, nothing I do, either pressing the side switch (either up or down) or changing it to "mute," seems to actually lock the rotation. My assumption here was that VoiceOver had cooped the side switch for volume, as that is always what it does--raise and lower the volume. However, I shall test this by changing the selection in settings to "mute," and then going to Control Center to see if I can lock the rotation from there. *smile* Thanks; be well * Mark BurningHawk Baxter * AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 * MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com * My home page: * http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. If this hasn't already been suggested, often you can just hit the two letter abbreviation for the state (FL, for Florida, for example) and then VO Space to collapse the pop-up menu, and when you cursor back over it, the state will be selected. Re: Speaking TV guides -Offcom consultation
Charter has an app for iPhone (haven't tested it on my iPad 2, and my iPHone 5 chewed the humous some months ago [*bitter tears*=), which seemed like it was starting to incorporate that functionality, although its "Change your cable box to the requested channel," never worked for me, and the app would only let you stream whatever was being offered at the moment, not the entire selection of cable channels you had subscribed to. I'd like to see those features upgraded, as well as a navigable TV guide, and if it's not something they can incorporate in the cable box you get from the company, then I think an app for desktop as well as mobile devices is called for. Personally, I think if countries such as the UK start mandating that manufacturers provide talking cable guides, etc., it will go a long way toward encouraging the US to do the same, which is very much in line with the ADA's mandate for equality. Re: NFB Resolution
Speaking of accessible stores, I think this is a far better use of the NFB's time--creating an accessibility standard for supermarkets and department stores and drug stores, etc.--than trying to regulate how apps and virtual environments are accessible. Every blind person has to shop--not every blind person has to use a computer or cell phone. Furthermore, the status quo doesn't change if all computers and all apps are accessible, because it's still usually the agencies which are buying said equipment for the blind end-user. This is a top-down approach to a rock-bottom problem. I don't have much use for the NFB either, but for them to pick on technology when this attack only further cements the reliance of blind people on commissions and agencies seems a bit over the top. Whenever I walk down the street to the supermarket, I'm reduced to the status of a child by the inaccessibility of the products, but I can come home and teach programming and app operation? Come on. Re: NFB Resolution
"the blind," need to stop waiting for some higher power to "make things accessible." accessibility is different for every individual, and only the broadest measures of any sort are useful across the board. Expecting an ADA or other body of law to universally open doors is a myth. Disability is a state of mind, and accessibility is an ongoing invention of the individual. If one accepts another's standards of accessibility, one also accepts the handicap such a standard implies by declaring something inaccessible; when one accepts a handicap, one also accepts disability. * Mark BurningHawk Baxter * AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 * MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com * My home page: * http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. deleting Facebok or Twitter accounts using Safari 6.1.5, Mountain Lion and Voiceover?
What is the most VO friendly way to delete a FB or Twitter account using Safari 6.1.5, Mountain Lion and Voiceover? Alternatively, can this be done from the IOS app? I find it impossible to navigate the friends or followers lists with my iPad 2, and the website is very VO unfriendly. I've got it installed on my iPad 2 32G; my iPhone 5 is defunct in the extreme. I see changes to notification center and app switcher, and can record and send audio but not video iMessages. I have no problem sending messages from iMessages in 8.0.2, and am running it on an iPad 2 32G. Yosemite updating weirdness?
Hi, folks. I just successfully restarted and installed all software updates for my Macbook Pro15 (circa 2008). However, when I look in menu/apple/about this mac, it says Software version 8.5. ... Isn't Yosemite 10.9? However, the behavior of Safari has changed. When I try to access my bank account at USBank.com, when I get to the password page, Safari says, "Failed to open page: Too many redirects occurred when trying to open this page." I'm not sure what exactly's going on here; any ideas? How could the installer run and re-log-in without doing the upgrade? Why has Safari's behavior changed about my bank's website? Re: MacSmart? + Yosemite upgrade
Hi! I am still trying to get the whole upgrade. It's coming down at a ridiculously slow rate, probably due to appstore congestion.I uninstalled Macsmart through Extensions, which seemed to be the advice bottom line. Oddly, this significantly changed the behavior of Safari, in that my bank website now causes Safari to have an error about too many redirects. Right now I have the upgrade on pause because my wife and I are busy doing stuff. I hope I've gotten rid of MacSmart though. :) * Mark BurningHawk Baxter http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: MacSmart? + Yosemite upgrade
I think it's because I deleted all tracking data and cookies. 922 websites had stored cookies or other tracking data! That's ridiculous, so I removed all tracking data. I believe that I just have to hit the "log in," button on the bank site, not just put in name and continue, so that it can reestablish its cookie. But, yeah, I still have the silly upgrade on pause after two days, and I'm busy enough that I don't think I have the time to dedicate to a clean install, and am not familiar with the process of burning the kernel to a CD. I could figure it out though. * Mark BurningHawk Baxter http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Yosemite, Mail and VO
Okay, I finally un-paused the silly thing, and let it install. Took about half an hour just for the installation, but after permissions repair, lag is negligible. However, I wonder if there’s a way to get Mail to put an “add contact,” button after every message header field? I have to tab about eight times to get to the Subject field; is there a way to collapse all these buttons? Also, I seem to have a problem interacting with the Messages table, often needing to interact twice and then use the VO cursor until it seems to take. It’s slippery… Other than that, the upgrade seems pretty painless. What should I look for in the new OS, what’s fun to tweak, etc? Thanks! :) Be well. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Yosemite not keeping network connection, and persistent snail-slow download speed
Whenever I put my Macbook Pro15 (4G RAM) to sleep after upgrading to Yosemite, when I wake it up, my WIFI menu extra panel says “looking for network …” The only way to fix this seems to VO-space-bar on the network which already has a check mark by it, E.G. my wireless cable Netgear modem. Any way I can fix this, or is it just a ghost in the machine? I have also noticed persistently super-slow download speeds, when I have a 60-MBPS cable connection and 4/4 WIFI connection. Re: Yosemite not keeping network connection, and persistent snail-slow download speed
Hi! I can’t find a “retina display one,” but I did change my graphics settings from “better battery life,” to “power performance.” Not sure if this is what you’re talking about, but it’s in Prefs/Energy Saver. Also, another repair permissions and restart may have fixed at least the network acquisition issue. As for the choke points along cable systems, I haven’t had much problem with this until now. Out of curiosity, I just went to www.speedtest.net and ran their test. All the columns came up “N/A.” I cannot understand why. Re: Yosemite not keeping network connection, and persistent snail-slow download speed
Yes, it’s an MBP15 from about 2008. Most troublesome right now is Safari’s continued odd behavior with my banking website; it behaves fine when going through the user-name and ID-shield questions, then when I put in my password, I get “empty HTML content.” • Mark BurningHawk Baxter http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Yosemite: The ghost in the machine?
Ever since upgrading my MBP15 (built around 2008, 4G RAM), random things have been changing, every time I put my Mac to sleep and wake it up again. For example: Safari will not access my banking website (www.usbank.com), and shows an empty HTML pane after I enter my password. However, I can log into the same website with the same user name and password with my iPad’s US Bank app, no problem. Every other page seems to load fine, but my download speed continues to be low. The next odd thing was that, when I woke my Mac this morning, VoiceOver wouldn’t talk, nor did shutting it off and relaunching it help; I had to shut off the mac and restart it to regain VO. When I did this, the system voice had changed from Samantha to Alex, even though I downloaded the Samantha voice upgrade. Very odd. One day, I’ll wake up my Mac and it’ll be talking in Swahili backwards with a German accent. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: activities (was easy way to use iMessage on mac)
The lag when switching apps only gets worse if you choose a different voice, and it's the one single drawback to Activities, which is otherwise an extremely powerful way to use VO. I have, now, two activities; the normal one, which I use for everything except messaging clients. I use AIM instead of Messages, as I was having problems getting messages to read, and only use AIM and SKype regularly--who needs more than two IM clients? sheesh. So, for these two apps, I use Alex, who is slightly louder than Fred for some reason. I slow him down a bit, as Fred can speak very quickly and I can still understand him, but other voices this is not so much true. I turn off all the elements of cursor tracking (There is no way to just turn cursor tracking off, except with a manual keystroke, but you *CAN* go through and uncheck all the boxes that say "VoiceOver cursor follows …" whatever, same beastie in the end.. Then, I park my message client's VO cursors in the HTML content window (leaving the insertion pointer in the edit boxes). It sounds complicated but once it's all set up it's just a few keystrokes. This is just one way to use Activities. I've written to accessibil...@apple.com to suggest at least one or two others; activities which could come "preset," with VO, but which might really help when using a new app for the first time or whatever. That lag, though, I think is just a processor hard limit, and will be better or worse depending on how much RAM you have. Don't let this lag dissuade you from using Activities to customize VO and make it even more flexible than it already is., • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: iTunes again
I agree there are more steps, and I"m wondering if VO's sweet spots might be able to help here, or landmarks, but I"m not sure how. I still have not seen an answer as to what steps I take to get my column browser back? I see the browser submenu off the View menu, but it's all dimmed out. Itunes 11 and sorting (NOT)
I imported an album of songs to my Music library. Despite the fact that the songs are labeled, "01," "02," etc. sequentially, numerically, numbers still meaning the same as they usually do… despite that, Itunes seems to put them in "by name," and won't be talked out of it. I've tried VO Vertical Bar (Shift Backslash), I've tried sorting by different criteria, but I still get them in weird order. Re: Mountain Lion and banking
Hating Java won't make it any more accessible. I do know that the Java developers are notoriously unavailable for contact. Re: Changereaction: A new game from Draconess intertainment for blind in the Mac app store
I'm running Mountain Lion 10.8.2, I have a MBP15 that's about 4 years old with 4G of RAM. What I did to get it started was go to the Applications folder, Select it by thing "change" and then interacting with the browser and doing a VO space to click it. It said, "Opening selected browser item," and then about a minute or so later, it came up speaking with the system voice. I just went back to the Finder window and opened it with the normal Command O, and it came up RIGHT away this time. I think it's got to download its guts first, as someone pointed out, but so far as I am concerned, so far the game acts as advertised. • Mark BurningHawk Baxter • AIM, Skype and Twitter: BurningHawk1969 • MSN: burninghawk1...@hotmail.com • My home page: • http://MarkBurningHawk.net/ -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Changereaction: A new game from Draconess intertainment for blind in the Mac app store
One other thing to keep in mind is that, if you do not have a system voice set, or if you have system speech turned off for whatever reason, you may not hear anything, and the app will launch in the background. It just occurred to me that this might be the problem with thinking it's not open. Re: for advanced voice over users only
I haven't tested this out, but my theory is that you might be able to add them to the VO pronunciation dictionary to be spoken differently. For example, if you know what keystroke is used to make a symbol that is ignored when VO comes to it, you could tell VO to pronounce that symbol as whatever you wanted to hear. Re: for advanced users only
Okay, how about another approach. Go through with a "find and replace," function and replace all the examples of Theta or Iota or Nu or whatever with the words "theta," "iota," "nu." This is your copy of the textbook, you can mark it up however you want. Also, in passing, I would note that different voices speak different symbols differently; E.G., Alex will say the "ohm," symbol next to a Skype contact's name, while Fred's voice will not say it, even though all other settings are the same. This is a perfect example of something that needs to be brought up with accessibility!apple.com Why not create a voice that has the settings to pronounce all those special symbols and characters? Hold down VoiceOver keys plus the command keys, all three in a row, and use left and right arrows to navigate to the VO parameter you wish to adjust, then use up and down arrows, while still holding down all three keys, VO and Command, to set it as you want. Re: What a mess in Skype for Mac.
Skype's layout is a wonderful example of why it's helpful to be able to visualize the screen and where things are on it. Vo is making lots of sounds to tell you "this table is below the screen in relation to the tool bar, but this table is right next to it, separated by a vertical bar,, and results of these tables appears below your current position in the window."
