Re: How to drag and drop in Mail or iTunes

2020-02-03 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Tim and Co.

Sorry to bring this thread back up. Tim’s suggestion works great with one
exception. I can move mailboxes around but I can’t distinguish how to move a
mailbox so that it appears immediately below the point where I release the
mouse. Invariably, I end up putting the moved mailbox within the mailbox where
I release the mouse. I have enough vision to physically move a mailbox and
place it such that a thin blue line appears, telling me to double tap and
release the mouse. But there must be a command that distinguishes between
putting the moving mailbox within the destination and putting it below the
destination. What am I doing wrong?

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: How to drag and drop in Mail or iTunes

2020-02-10 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Hi Tim,

I actually was rearranging boxes which had mistakenly gotten placed within
other boxes when they should have been top level On My Mac mailboxes to begin
with. It was a bit of a bitch having to do it visually by hand because I would
otherwise keep dropping boxes within other boxes. I think I’m done for now.
But if you have any further guidance on how to avoid dropping boxes into other
boxes, in other words, moving boxes to the top level of On My Mac, let me know.

Thanks for revisiting this topic.

Best,
Kevin

Re: How to drag and drop in Mail or iTunes

2020-02-10 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Tim,

Unfortunately, a lot of my e-mail boxes, particularly my Gmail box, are Pop3.
I’m really not comfortable changing that because we’re dealing with some 15
years of mail and I don’t know what I’d lose. I think I did experience
something like you describe by moving items to the On My Mac thing and
releasing. If I’m right, that probably moved my given mailbox to a position in
alphabetical order at the top level of my On My Mac thing.

Like I said, I’m pretty much covered now and don’t expect to have to mess with
this again. But I think I understand what you said and it seems to check out.

Best,
Kevin

Can't see my Mac Mini on my home network even though I can see all my windows machines

2021-11-18 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I’m trying to network my Mac mini and my Windows 10 machine. I can see the
Windows 10 machine on my Mac but not the Mac on my Windows 10 machine. As far
as I know, they are both on the same wifi network. The Mac mini is the only
device I can’t see on the network. How do I make it visible?

I thought I had enabled sharing. I chose enable File Sharing. but I guess
there's more to do that I am not catching. My Windows machine sees all
this stuff and all my other networkable devices like ROKU, Sonos and
others. but the Mac only sees my wife's printer and nothing else. Hope
someone else can lend a hand.

Re: Can't see my Mac Mini on my home network even though I can see all my windows machines

2021-11-18 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Hi Tim,

Thanks for helping out as you always do. Unfortunately, I must be an idiot. I
checked the share with SMB option and I was presented with two options which
appeared to concern which account I wanted to share with. The options were:
Kevin L. Gibbs, my Mac Mini’s computer name is kevinlgibbs, all lower case no
spaces. Apparently, the computer can be seen as something called
Kevin-Gibbs-Mac-mini.local according to Sharing.

Anyway, after going to Options, I could choose either Kevin L. Gibbs or
SophosEndpoint or Kevin L. Gibbs.

I chose Sophos and tried to put in the PW for my Sophos antivirus account and
that failed. I tried Kevin L. Gibbs and put in the PW for my Mac mini, and I
suspect this succeeded. At least, it didn’t give back an incorrect password
notification.

aNot withstanding that, my Mac is not visible on the Windows side and I don’t
even see it as an available computer on the Mac side under Shared Devices. I’m
thoroughly confused. I’m sure this is one of those “Press the Reset button,
(Volume XII Revised Edition situations.). but I just don’t get it.

Thanks for lending a hand. If you have any further guidance please share.

Gratefully,
Kevin

Tim,

I guess I’m sort of done. I can see the Windows machine from the Mac and I can
move files in both directions tons if I sign into the Windows machine from the
Mac by entering the Microsoft credentials I have for the Windows machine when
it asks me to “Connect As.” I still can’t approach the Mac from the Windows
machine even though I can see a whole ton of networked pEriferals on my Windows
machine that I can’t see from the Mac, even though one of those pEriferals, my
Sonos music system, draws content from my iTunes library stored, wait FOR it,
on my Mac.

NOW, MY CAPS LOCK HAS GOTTEN STUCK AND I WON’T BE ABLE TO UNDO THIS WITHOUT
REBOOTING THE MACHINE AND I WANT TO FINISH THIS RESPONSE. UNLESS, THERE’S
SOMETHING OBVIOUS THAT I HAVEN’T DONE, I GUESS I’LL SETTLE FOR BEING ABLE TO
APPROACH THIS FROM ONE SIDE BUT NOT THE OTHER, AS IT WERE.

THANKS AGAIN. AND SORRY FOR THE ALL CAPS

Export a network profile?

2021-11-21 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

My wife and I are about to buy new MBPs. Before we do that, we have a lot of
housekeeping to do. One of the things I’ve noticed is that, while we are on
the same wireless network at home, my wife can see more computers on her
network than I can. Specifically, she can see both my Windows DAW and the Mac
mini from which I am writing this post. I, on the other hand, can’t see her
computer or even my Mac mini from the Windows machine. I can only see my
Windows machines from my Mac or Windows machine (not hers at all,) even though
I’m sure we’re on the same wireless network with the same router and network
PW.

I’m wondering if I can export some network profile she has and import it so I
can have the same visibility she does.

If I’m completely barking up the wrong tree, please let me know.

Best,
Kevin

Re: Export a network profile?

2021-11-22 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Tim,

yeah. I’m in touch with the guy who built my Windows DAW. He might know
something. I suppose it doesn’t really matter since I CAN access the Windows
machine from the Mac. So, as long as I have access in one direction and can
push and pull, as it were, I should be fine. It’s just frustrating when
something seems like it should be obvious and I can’t figure it out.

One last point. I did manage to get access to the Mac from Windows by typing:

Smb://192.168.xxx.xx. I was initially offered a screen from where I could type
in my credentials. I assume that was my Mac credentials. I thought I’d typed
them in correctly but after two or maybe three failures, I was given a message
that says,

You need a new app to open this smb link. It asked me to look in the Microsoft
Store where I found nothing. So, I may have burned an opportunity there.

I don’t want to log out of this machine. Where do I find my user name? I know
my PW is correct. I thought my user name was kevjazz. It may be kevinlgibbs
or Kevin L Gibbs where would I find out?

Thanks,
Kevin

My user folder is kevinlgibbs, all lower case, no spaces. That still doesn’t
solve the problem of my seemingly locked myself out when typing in the smb
creds from Run in the Windows machine. No idea how to solve that one.

Again, since I can push and pull I guess it doesn’t really matter. It’s just
the principle of the thing at this point.

Re: Export a network profile?

2021-11-22 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Tim,

Looks like your recipe worked. It didn’t exactly restart the lockout. I was
still told I needed a new app to do SMB. What happened was, when I restarted
the Mac and tried to simply type in the address from Windows without SMB, I got
the window asking for my creds. This time, I typed in the right name and PW
and BINGO! I’m now functioning in two directions. WOW!

Thanks, Brother.

Need advice on best method for migrating from ancient Mac mini 2010 to brand new MBP 2021.

2021-12-04 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

My new MBP should be arriving on Tuesday. I’ll be replacing my 2010 Mac mini
with this killer box. What’s the best way to migrate all the data from one
machine to the other. I have TM on the Mac mini and I have a pretty decent
wifi situation here. The Mac mini runs High Sierra. The new box runs
Monterey, I presume. I’m imagining that I should be able to get everything
down to the new MBP by signing into iCloud with my credentials and having
everything populate that way except for the documents folder and certain other
apps like Sibelius, Komplete Kontrol and other Music specific apps which would
have to be installed separately from the wireless iCloud migration. Similarly,
I imagine the contents of my Documents folder would have to be moved by way of
an intermediate portable drive. Am I on the right track or completely messing
up?

Thanks for any guidance. It’s been ten years since I faced this sort of thing.

Thanks,
Kevin

Deleted e-mails kept coming back. Why?

2022-02-08 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I have a brand new M1 MacBook Pro running OS 12.1. I’m deleting old e-mails
from my Gmail account in Mac Mail and finding that mails I know I deleted
suddenly reappear. I have a little vision and I know these things are coming
back because I can see the screen blip quickly. After that, if I arrow up
through mails, I will hear subject lines of e-mails I know I deleted with dates
to confirm. I delete the e-mails again and keep going through my e-mail and
then find that the e-mails have returned yet again. Has anyone experience
anything like this?

For the record, I delete e-mails by holding down command and option and
depressing either the delete key in the Sixpack, (bottom left,) or the other
backspace key immediately below the function keys, again while holding command
and option so that I am in the same place in the list of e-mails. Hope this is
clear.

Anyway, thinking of calling either Accessibilitty or Apple Care to see if they
know anything. But thought I’d ask you guys first.

Don't hear subject lines of e-mails read when they come in on my mac

2022-02-08 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Ever since I got this new MacBook Pro, I’ve noticed that I don’t hear the
subject lines of e-mails being read when they come in on my Mac. I hear the
sound that indicates I have new mail. But the sender and subject are no longer
read they way they used to be. Is this something I’ve managed to accidentally
turn off? If so, that would be cool provided I know how to turn it back on.

Thoughts?

The accessibility guys suggested dI change some settings in Notifications

Can't sync iBooks on iPhone 7 running iOS 14.4.x updated today with 2010 Mac mini running Sierra 10.12.6

2021-03-18 Thread Kevin Gibbs
guys,

I posted this on viPhone but thought I’d leave it here, too.

I’m seldom here. Have a bit of a head scratcher. I’m trying to sync my iBooks
library between my iPhone/iPad and my ancient 2010 Mac mini running Sierra
10.12.6. when I examined iBooks on my iPhone, I was told I had to update my
Mac Mini to OS 10.12. About this Mac says I’m running 10.12.6. So, I figure
I’m good. But there are sample books on my iPhone that don’t appear on my Mac.
These books are potentially expensive and I would prefer to buy them once I
know they’ll show up on all devices.

I had initially signed in on one Apple ID and now may wish to try signing in on
another on my Mac. But don’t know how to sign out on my Mac to sign back in.
Have no interest in signing all the way out of iCloud in Preferences. That
would suck.

If you could, please write back and copy me at kevj...@gmail.com
to make sure I see this since I almost never visit
Mac visionaries.

Thanks,
Kevin

How to reorder columns in Numbers using VO

2021-03-25 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I was just on the horn with Accessibility for an hour and I’m supposed to get
another call back from them tomorrow. But I wonder if any of you have a VO
friendly recipe for this. I have a spreadsheet and I want to change the order
of columns in the table. I have enough vision to do this visually by dragging
and dropping with my trackpad if my nose is on the screen. But there has to be
a better way. While I can get VO to highlight the column header cell, I can’t
get VO to highlight the lettered cell immediately above the header cell. I can
only highlight that by tapping with my trackpad using the vision I have.

I imagine that we’re looking at something similar to the recipe for reordering
items in an iTunes playlist or mailboxes on the left hand side in Mail, both
processes which I’ve forgotten since I use them one every five years or so.
Hope I’m making sense. Thanks for any help.

Best,
Kevin

thanks so much. It was a little flakey, like you said. but it eventually
worked and made my day. I've copied this advice into my general Tips and

Got notification RE passwords part of data leak. Then lost notification before memorizing accounts in question. What to do?

2021-05-14 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

While I was dealing with something else, I got a notification on my iPhone that
seven account passwords were part of a data leak and might pose accounts to
compromise. I clicked on the note but then lost it before memorizing which
accounts were involved. I gather that dismissed or read notifications are
gone. Is there any way to find out which accounts need passwords changed? I
could only remember one by the time I got back to this. Any help appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Got notification RE passwords part of data leak. Then lost notification before memorizing accounts in question. What to do?

2021-05-15 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Found the answer in Apple Support Communities, I think.
Sep 25, 2020 — Apple compares passwords that are in the Keychain app on your
phone
with that list, and tells you about the ones that appear both in Keychain
and the list maintained by security teams. To see the list Apple has compiled
go to Settings/Passwords and tap on Security Recommendations.

Re: Got notification RE passwords part of data leak. Then lost notification before memorizing accounts in question. What to do?

2021-05-16 Thread Kevin Gibbs
In Safari preferences, I did notice something in the bottom left corner that
said, “caution password used on multiple websites. “ But it was not clear to
me whether one could isolate your passwords as shown to reflect only those
which were used on multiple websites. Is it possible to isolate the passwords
that are only used on multiple websites? Or, is that what I’m looking at by
default?

Disregard my last message. I now understand that passwords which appear on
multiple sites have an additional column to the right with an indication

Caps Lock randomly gets stuck on Mac running High Siera 10.12.6

2021-05-16 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Yeah. I know my Mac is from the Stone Age. Please put that aside. Every so
often, when I’m typing on my 2010 Mac mini, the Caps Lock will suddenly turn on
without my having depressed it. Nothing I do will disengage it until I turn
off and reboot the machine. No idea why this happens nor how I can correct it
other than rebooting. As far as I know, this only happens when VO is
running.. I can use the machine without speech if I must. But I’ve never had
this happen while VO was turned off that I know of. Any ideas?

Re: Got notification RE passwords part of data leak. Then lost notification before memorizing accounts in question. What to do?

2021-05-16 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Hi Donna,
I did notice that difference between my iPhone and my Mac. I was just wondering
if I could find the same information the same way on both machines. I
understand the difference now. too bad there isn’t a way you can type in a
password and find out how many and which websites use that same password. Is
there a way to do that?

I didn’t think so. I also think that my iPhone7 is kept more up-to-date than
my 2010 Mac mini running 10.12.6. Would that be the case? how often can either
machine expect to be updated regarding the viability of passwords?

I only noticed because my iPhone shows a password as being part of the data

How to delete an e-mail address from dropdown in To field of Mac Mail

2021-05-18 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I just received a message from a friend who said her old e-mail address was
hacked and to use a new one. As a test, I typed her name into the To field of
Mac Mail on my Mac mini running 10.12.6. the new e-mail address appeared as
the first option. But the old address was immediately below it. I know I can
listen to the e-mail address being read to make sure I choose the correct one.
But I would prefer to hose the dead e-mail from my options. There are several
such cases where dead or misspelled e-mail address appear as options and I’d
like to remove them from this dropdown but have no idea how or whether it can
be done.

Ideas?

Thanks,
kevin

2021-05-18 Thread Kevin Gibbs

Figured out how to delete previous recipient. Unfortunately, that deletion
doesn't work if you ever sent an e-mail to the address you want gone. too
bad.

Re: How to delete an e-mail address from dropdown in To field of Mac Mail

2021-05-18 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Brad,

Did all that. It worked to a point. The old address is deleted from that
window. However, when I go about typing a new e-mail, I see both the new and
old e-mail addresses because I have several old e-mails which were sent to that
old address before it was hacked and changed. So, I guess I just have to be
aware. I have tested this successfully with a misspelled e-mail address where
I don’t have any e-mails sent there to. In that case, all worked perfectly.
So, just have to be careful. Drag.

Any thoughts on the future of MacBook Pros in light of this WWDC?

2021-06-07 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

I hope this note finds all of you staying safe and healthy and doing well.
I'm’ writing because my wife and I just finished reading the highlights from
the WWDC and were disappointed to see nothing about a new MacBook Pro to go
with the upcoming Mac OS Monterey. Considering that a new iMac came out just
recently, and further considering that it’s been a while since the 16 inch
MacBook Pro got any love, I’m wondering if any of you have any opinions on how
long the current 16 inch machine will remain the flagship of the MacBook line.

Personally, I can’t imagine that sighted users won’t want state of the art
hardware in a 16 inch form factor because they believe in screens and so on.
If I’m wrong,… oh well.

While we don’t necessarily think in visual terms about stuff like this. This
list comprises a group of the most Mac savvy people I know and I’d be
interested if you’d be willing to share your opinions on what the future holds
for laptop hardware in Mac land.

I should get around to saying that my wife and I haven’t upgraded our Mac
hardware since we bought a Mac mini for me and a 27 inch iMac for her in 2010.
We haven’t been able to upgrade the OS on that hardware in years, (10.12.6,)
and we just want to avoid buying new hardware that will, itself be frozen in,
say, one OS upgrade. See the problem?

All of you may decide not to express an opinion on any of this. But I’D be
grateful for any thoughts you’d be willing to share.

Thanks,
Kevin

How can I tell which address I forwarded an e-mail to after the fact?

2021-07-19 Thread Kevin Gibbs
My wife has three different e-mail addresses. Last night, I forwarded an
e-mail to her and now I can’t remember the address to which I forwarded it. I
look in the Sent file on my Mac running 10.12.6. but all I see is her name.
When I right-click, I see two e-mail addresses which are both greyed out. How
an I tell which one I sent the mail to without asking her?

Thanks,
Kevin

Does anyone use the Dropbox desktop app on BAC? Having problems.

2020-09-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs

Does anyone use the dropbox desktop app on Mac or Windows? I’m having real
trouble uploading or moving files using this app on either platform. I end up
having to do all sorts of gymnastics barely to upload a file. I try to avoid
using the website for this. Then I can use my iOS app to move the file in the
main dropbox folder to any sub folder I want. But it seems like I shouldn’t
have to go through that. What am I doing wrong?

If you wouldn’t mind, since I so seldom visit this list, I would be grateful if
you would copy me on any response to kevj...@gmail.com, as I have suspended
getting email from this list at this time.

Thanks in advance,
Kevin

Re: Does anyone use the Dropbox desktop app on BAC? Having problems.

2020-09-06 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I eventually did get it to work. I actually had it working and then
accidentally moved my DB folder and had to relink my computer to my DB account.
 All’s well now.

Thanks,

How to remove a bogus e-mail from sender options on Mac running High Siera

2020-10-28 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I have a business contact named Darren, with two Rs in his name.
Unfortunately, once I sent a note to him with only one R in his name and that
mistake still exists if I type in a name with autocomplete in the To field of
an e-mail. I’d really like to remove that “memory’ from my autocomplete and
don’t know how. Any guidance appreciated.

Best,
Kevin

CAPS LOCK gets permanently turned on by accident and I don't know why or how to turn it back off.

2020-11-06 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Hi all,

I’m asking about something that happens very rarely. Every so often for
reasons I can’t figure out, I will find that I am typing in ALL CAPS when I
don’t want to and wasn’t aware I’d engaged it. The only way to correct is
appears to be to shut down my Mac mini running High Sierra and restart. I am
using CAPS LOCK as my VO key, not CTRL Option. I’m not aware that I engaged
the Caps Lock with VO Semicolon. But when I do that, I seem to get in a VO
menu system. So, if anyone knows what I might have done to randomly cause CAPS
Lock to be permanently engaged, let me know so I won’t have to turn off the
computer and turn it back on again.

Thanks,
Kevin

OS 14.2 won't download & Install on iPad Air 2

2020-11-21 Thread Kevin Gibbs
My iPad tells me that a new OS is available for download. I have it
charged to 100%. I download and it gets to about 93% downloaded and then
says that an error occurred during the download. My wife has done some
reading and says that one of the reasons might be that there is a partial
copy of this OS somewhere and that I should remove this before attempting
the download again. Pam can't find it anywhere and we don't know what to
do. I'm assuming that if the hardware didn't support the OS, I wouldn't be
given the message to try downloading and installing it. the machine works
fine. but I'd like to update the OS if I'm entitled to do so. I have
already exited iCloud and signed back in without any change to the download
problem. I've tried this on several different days to allow for extreme
traffic downloading the update. I don't think that's the problem. Ideas?

Re: OS 14.2 won't download & Install on iPad Air 2

2020-11-21 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Actually, I got a message from Richard Turner in viPhone suggesting that I
call Apple Accessibility. No idea they’d actually answer on the weekend. They
couldn’t find a partial download and I had to update it by connecting it to my
computer, which I had never done in six years. Anyway, all’s well that ends
well. But I’ll keep this bit of instructions in my Tips & Tricks Folder.
Thanks,
Kevin

How do I go to a specific page in a Pages document?

2020-12-04 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I’m running Pages on Mac OS 10.12.6, High Sierra. I want to be able to go to a
specific page in a large Pages document. The web says I should be able to type
CTRL Command G and type a page number. That’s clearly wrong. Is there a
keyboard command to do this?

Have an 8TB SSD on my M1 pro. Where can I get a large enough drive to function as a Time machine backup>

2022-08-29 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

Subject says most of it. I need a Time machine drive large enough to back up
most, but not all, of an 8TB internal SSD. I’ve excluded all the directories
containing all my VST instruments as they could be redownloaded from their
respective manufacturers. I assume they would have to be in order to
reauthorize most of them. But I’m down to about 650GB on my 4TB Time machine
drive which was a relic from my old Mac mini days. What do you recommend for a
backup drive designed to routinely handle probably 2TB of data comprising my
iTunes, iPhoto and mail and document libraries?

Since I don’t routinely visit this group, could you please do me a favor and
reply to author to make sure I see your response?

Best,
Kevin

Got the video source thing solved. Now can't get audio captured along with
my video. Again, it works fine on Windows. Can't remember how I got my
audio to capture with my video on Windows. So, can't duplicate for Mac.

How do I convert Letter sized Pdfs to a4 on Mac? Can I use Preview?

2023-01-30 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

I have some US Letter sized Pdf documents which I need to convert to A4 before
scanning them and e-mailing them to Europe. I can’t send Letter sized docs
because the margins won’t work and the result will be rejected. I need to
convert specific documents to be saved as PdFs in A4 so that they can be signed
and notarized and rescanned, again as A4, to be sent to Europe.

Without buying any software, particularly from Adobe, which I detest, how can I
convert Letter Pdfs to A4 then sign and scan them back as A4 for sending to
Europe?

Thanks,
Kevin

Mac One Bundle is turning out to be a potential major PITA

2023-03-11 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

My wife and I thought it might be a good idea to take advantage of the new Mac
One Bundle so we can share Apple Music, Apple TV, Apple News and other stuff
between the two of us. There’s just one major problem. Because of previous
decisions we’ve made, I am listed as the “Organizer” and my wife is listed as
an adult on the account. The problem is that while I have 200GB of iCloud
storage, she has 2TB of storage.

If we proceed with this, I gather that we will have to downgrade Pam’s iCloud
from the 2TB she’s had for the last couple years in order to avoid double
paying for the 2TB of data we want. Before doing this downgrade, we will
have to download all 407GB of my wife’s 2TB of data so that it won’t be lost
when we stop paying for her individual 2TB plan. Unfortunately, there doesn’t
seem to be any short method for backing up Pam’s music, photos, docs and mail
all at once so that it can then be re-uploaded to a new 2TB stash which is part
of the new shared bundle.

As near as I can figure out, the only steps available appear to require the
user to download mail, photos, music, docs and so on in separate format
specific operations instead of being able to simply grab all the data in one
long download operation. Am I missing something? It seems to me that it would
make more sense to simply have an operation designed to transfer the whole lot
of Pam’s 407GB from essentially one vault to another in one shot. Please let
me know if I’m making sense and if I’m missing an operation that might make
this a lot less painful.

Best,
Kevin

Just clicked Family Storage upgraded my iCloud from 200GB to 4TB. 2TB of
that is what we want to discontinue. Still gives us 2TB which should be
enough.

Re: Mac One Bundle is turning out to be a potential major PITA

2023-03-12 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Just spoke to Apple and here’s the deal. Remember that before the bundle, I,
the Organizer, had a 200GB plan. My wife, the Adult, had a 2TB plan. We
thought that she should cancel her 2TB plan before it auto renewed on April 1.
But that would have caused a disaster. The Apple advisor informed us that the
correct procedure was for Pam to do nothing and allow us to be billed for her
2TB plan on April 1 as usual. When the Apple One Bundle renewed on April 10,
her 2TB plan would automatically be canceled and she would receive a prorated
refund for the number of days she didn’t use. Meanwhile, her data would be
rolled into the remaining 2TB that we bought as part of buying the largest
available Apple One Bundle. Again, this isn’t intuitive. But we will sit
still and do nothing, taking care to do a thorough backup of both our Macs with
Time Machine to cover ourselves against a calamity. If all works out well, we
should see our total data decline from 4TB to 2TB on or about April 10 and all
will be well going forward.

Thanks for all the help and I hope someone finds this useful.

Best,
Kevin

Can't send to my wife's mac.com account from my Google account. Why not?

2023-05-11 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

I’m having a weird problem these last few days and wonder if anyone else is
experiencing this. My wife tells me that e-mails sent to her Mac.com address
from my gmail.com address are not arriving on either her
MBPro or iPhone 14Pro Max. Messages sent from iCloud get through. Other
friends of mine have volunteered to send test messagees from their Gmail
accounts to her Mac.com and my Gmail address simultaneously. I receive the
messages and my wife does not.

We just spoke to Apple Care and they are stumped. Has anyone else had a
problem like this in the last five days or so?

Thanks,
Kevin

Having focus problems with VO in all apps on Mac M1 running Monterey 12.6x

2023-06-22 Thread Kevin Gibbs

Guys,

I hardly know where to begin or where to put this. I’m having some weird
problems with my VoiceOver and what I guess is keyboard focus. This began
in Sibelius but has spread to all apps and that's why I'm writing you here.

For some reason, in Sibelius, if VO is running, I can’t select notes or
bars by using the shift and arrow keys. I have limited vision and I know
what the screen should look like as notes are selected. But this doesn’t
happen if VO is running. If I turn VO off, the selection looks as it
should.

Curiously, if VO is on and I press shift and arrow, VO says that things are
being selected. But I know the screen is not reflecting that selection.

I saved my VO preferences and then cut to default preferences. Sibelius
appeared to behave as it should under VO.

Further, when I switch apps with CMD TAB, the active window may not show up
on screen and new text added to the window may not appear even though ‘VO
speaks words or text as it’s typed until I CMD TAB out and back in. I may
even have to turn VO off and back on to see text appear correctly in the
active window. This is highly irregular. I’ve even seen the graphics of
the various apps that show up as you CMD TAB through them remain frozen on
the screen after I’ve supposedly settled into my preferred active
app/window.

I don’t want to rebuild my preferences. There are issues with switching
between languages and voices to read in foreign languages I’m attempting to
learn. I don’t have the energy to rebuild a lot of things. Could anyone
give me any pointers on how to debug my VO preferences to figure out what’s
wrong? I suspect there’s one preference that has become mangled by
accident. It’s almost as if Quick Nav is involved when it isn’t.

Any guidance greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kevin

Does anyone use multiple VO languages on a Mac

2023-06-28 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

I wrote here a few days back about some keyboard focus issues I was having
using an M1 MacBook Pro running Monterey 12.67. but I want to set up a new
topic because those focus issues were a minor complication as part of a larger
problem.

I’m trying to use Vo to help learn Portuguese. I’ve added a Portuguese voice
and two activities that should result in the ability to shift between English
and Portuguese as the Vo content language. While this was working initially,
it went south when I noticed the focus issues I was talking about earlier. But
I wonder if anyone on here who is bilingual has ever added multiple languages
to Vo on the Mac to shift between reading in two or more different languages.

Any guidance appreciated.

Best,
Kevin

Re: Does anyone use multiple VO languages on a Mac

2023-06-28 Thread Kevin Gibbs
The solution is to make sure that Select based on language is not chosen in
the VO rotor. Unfortunately, Certain actions cause VO to bounce to VO
Settings which defaults to that. Maybe Activities are not the way to go in
this case. Thanks, Donna.

Need recommendations for best Time Machine drive solution. SSD vs conventional and brand recommendations for either

2023-07-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

You may see this note on several lists. My wife has a Western digital
mechanical drive she uses for Time Machine. The last time she fired it up, we
had a bit of a panic as it failed to be recognized or mount initially. While
the drive did eventually present itself in Finder and do its thing, this isn’t
the first time it’s given her a fright and we wonder if an external SSD would
be more reliable than a conventional drive for TM. She doesn’t necessarily
need speed. She does need peace of mind. We’d be willing to pay a necessary
premium for this.

My questions are:

Is an SSD more reliable or durable in this context?

Do you have any recommendations for a 4TB drive to be used exclusively for Time
Machine?

Finally, if an SSD doesn’t provide greater durability, do you have
recommendations for the best mechanical drive solution?

Thanks,
Kevin

Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?

2023-07-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I assume that making Dropbox files online only decreases your local disk
consumption. I further imagine that if you make a top level folder online only
it should make all the subfolders within it online as well. Is that true? Do
I have to go in and check Make Online only for each subfolder? Worst yet,
would I have to check online only for each individual file within a subfolder?
That would be a horrendous. Drag if that’s the case. Can someone let me know?

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?

2023-07-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Thanks Brandon. As I write this, some of the files are still populating across
machines. That is, I can see them on the Windows machine but not on my Mac.
That suggests that they are not yet fully uploaded. I’m guessing that I’ll see
them on the Mac when they’ve made it all the way up to DB itself. We’re
talking about 10GB of stuff and that might take a minute.

Should I further assume that the online only status will e conferred upon these
files once they appear on all devices associated with this account?

Thanks,

Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?

2023-07-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
One more question. What about iCloud Drive? I decided to make a shortcut on
my Windows 10 machine so that files stored in iCloud could easily find their
way to the dark side when needed.:). is there a way to make them online only at
least from the Win10 machine’s point of view?

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?

2023-07-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Let me make the iCloud thing a little clearer. I made an iCloud Drive shortcut
on my Win10 machine as I said. It turns out that I placed a huge collection of
video files in iCloud Drive because I thought I might want to watch them on my
iPhone at some point. I guess I’ll move them to DB and use my DB iPhone app
because I assume I can make them online only in DB whereas I can’t do that in
iCloud. Is that right?

Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?

2023-07-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I’ve decided to move the 59GB video collection to my Mac desktop. That should
take it out of iCloud Drive and free up Windows disk space. If I want to see a
particular portion of this video collection on my phone, I’ll move that
particular portion temporarily back into iCloud, watch it and then remove it
again.

Thanks everybody.

Re: Does making Dropbox folders online only decrease local disk consumption?

2023-07-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
One thing I will say about this iCloud thing. I initiated the move of this 59
gB folder and it’s taking forever to even begin. I realize moving 59GB,
essentially downloading it, will take a long time. But it’s amazing that it’s
still saying “Preparing to move…” after at least fifteen minutes. I wonder how
long I should wait before stopping this and moving the files using Sneaker net
from my Windows machine via thumb drive to my Mac and deleting the whole mess
from iCloud.

Thoughts?

What's the quickest way to move a row up or down to new position in Numbers on Mac

2023-08-27 Thread Kevin Gibbs
So sorry for a stupid question. I’m wanting to know how to cut a row, move to
a new location and paste that row.

I tried dragging and dropping. While this probably worked, it left a space
where the original location had been. I also realize I can alphabetize by
first column. But before I do that, I’d like to know if there’s a way to
essentially cut a row and then move to a new location and paste that cut row
below the row I’m on. The usual Cut in the Edit Menu delets text within a
cell. I don’t want to delete the row because I don’t want to lose it. If
Delete places the row on the clipboard, that could work. But that outcome
isn’t clear from what I can see.

Any help greatly appreciated and again, sorry for a dumb question.

Best,
Kevin

Need help finding affordable braille display for M1 MacBook. Also looking for Portuguese as second language braille resources

2024-01-13 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

Sorry for the OT post.I’m thinking of finding an affordable, possibly used,
small braille display to help me learn Portuguese by having language lessons
reenforced with braille along with speech. It’s a long story. I need hardware
that would connect easily to my 2021 M1 MacBook.

I need two things. I need an affordable braille display so I can read
Portuguese in braille. I also need a braille resource for learning the braille
symbols for all the diacritical marks, (accents,) in Portuguese braille. For
example, I know that an e with an acute accent is represented in braille with a
full six dot cell. A C with a cedilla is 1, 2, 3, 4, 6. But I would like a
full braille table of all the conventional symbols for letters that commonly
take accents and how these are represented in conventional foreign language
text, particularly Portuguese.

Finally, I’d also like any suggestions for braille Portuguese as second
language textbooks that I might be able to use, particularly if they are
relatively short and wouldn’t take up a ton of space on my shelf. For that
matter, if there are braille resources which are computer files that could be
read using an affordable braille display, that would be even cooler.

Again, I realize this is pretty off the wall. If anyone has any suggestions
regarding where I might turn to look for any of these tools, please let me
know. Also, if anyone on this list knows of any resources inside Portugal
where I might find some of these materials, please don’t hesitate to let me
know.

Thanks,
Kevin

Sonoma 14.4.1 CAPS LOCK won't pause speech when chosen as the VO key

2024-04-07 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

I seldom post or visit here. But here’s one where you all might have some
guidance for me. I have an M1 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.4.1. I updated
from 14.3 point something. Ever since 14.4.1, I’ve noticed that the CAPS LOCK
key will not pause speech in any Mac application. Curiously, the Control Key
does pause speech, even when it is not part of the VO key. That is, when you
choose CAPS LOCk exclusively, Control should not pause speech. It does. In no
case will CAPS LOCK pause speech.

I’ve tried this on my M1 and on my wife’s M1 with the same results. My wife is
sighted and does not use VO. She also does not have any unusual third party
apps like Sibelius that needs the CAPS LOCk for pause because it highjacks the
Control key to move the user between the ribbon and the musical score you’re
writing in.

But both my wife and I have noticed the same behavior. Another gentleman in
Germany has confirmed my findings. He is a Sibelius user but says his CAPS
LOCk fails in Apple programs as well.
Again, any effort you could make to test this and let me know if CAPS lock
pauses VO speech would be very much appreciated.

Thanks,
Kevin

How to delete individual messages from long e-mail threads and continue reading the thread in sequence

2024-05-29 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,

I’m using an M1 MacBook Pro running Sonoma 14.5.1. I’ve discovered what I
think is something weird about Apple Mail when it comes to reading long
threads. If one expands a long thread, the expectation should be that you
start reading from the beginning of the thread and delete messages as you
finish them, if that’s what you want. Each successive deletion should move the
reader to the next message in chronological order, however, my experience has
consistently been that deleting messages sends the reader hither, thither and
yawn. While there seems to be no real exact pattern to what happens, I find
that I am either sent several messages down the thread, or, I’m sent to the
very top of the thread. The only way I know things are wrong is that I have
enough vision to understand that I’ve been bounced somewhere other than where I
should be.

It used to be that CMD Option Delete, (where Delete is on the Sixpack, would
deliver the desired result. But now, using Cmd Option Delete removes the
message such that it can’t be restored with Cmd Z. Further, using this method
doesn’t send the message to the trash. I went looking for a message I removed
in this fashion and it was nowhere to be found. So, I can’t use this deletion
method anymore.

I developed a case through Apple Accessibility and we’ve determined that this
is a mail thing, not an accessibility thing, because the behavior is identical
regardless of whether Vo is ON or OFF.

Does anyone here have the same experience? Does anyone here have a reliable KS
for deleting a message from a mail thread while being certain of moving to the
next message in said thread?

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: How to delete individual messages from long e-mail threads and continue reading the thread in sequence

2024-06-03 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Using Apple Mail on my MBPro running Sonoma 14.5. i expand the thread with
VO SPACE. I then VO arrow down to the first mesage in the thread. When I
finish reading it, if i want to delete it, I use the delete key on the
sixpack of my Magic Keyboard. This will send me to the bottom of the
thread instead of moving me to the next message.

I recently tried turning Cursor Tracking OFF and using CMD Option sixpack
delete. With Cursor Tracking OFF, you get a slightly more reliable
response.

I didn't quite understand some of the original suggerstions above in this
thread. I'll reread them and see if i can make sense.

I am NOT using iOS. I don't have any problems on my phone.

How do i block e-mails on my Mac from senders who have my iCloud address

Subject says it all,

guys,
How do i block e-mails from my Mac and my iPhone using iOS9? I gather that it
is not possible to block e-mails on my phone. If that’s true, that sucks.
but, if there’s a recipe, you guys are sure to know it.

since i don’t read this list, I’d be very appreciative if anyone answering this

Hdeterming DAISY version of a book

2012-03-03 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I have a problem. I have a daisy book that was done by the Minnesota
State services for the blind. However, I don't really know how to find
out what version of Daisy the book is done in. Can anyone tell me if
there's a method for finding this out? I want to buy an app for my
iPhone but need to make sure that the app supports the DAISY of this
specific book.

I did download JAWS 12 and discovered that this particular book would
work with that FS reader. However, I need to make sure that it will
work with either in daisy or read to go.  The only thing I know for
certain is that the book is audio only.  The book was delivered on a
cd ROM with a bunch of MP3 files all of which have long numbers
instead of descriptive filenames. There are also .sml files and one
HTML file.    Again, is there any way to look at these files on the
disk to determine the flavor of Daisy employed?

Re: Finale or music editor for mac?

2012-03-04 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Okay, here are the facts:
1.  No version of Sibelius or finale is accessible for the blind on a
Mac.
2.  The only music notation solutions that generates print notation
using mainstream, commercial off-the-shelf software, involves using
Sibelius 5.25, which may not even be available from Sibelius any
longer, and a special set of JAWS compatible scripts called Sibelius
access. Sibelius access is available from a site in the UK called
www.musicaccess.co,uk.  The site is owned by Dan Rugman.  Rugman  has
said  that he is working on a solution for Sibelius 6. This solution
will involve using jaws and Sibelius However, Sibelius 6 is also
probably  no longer available from Sibelius anymore because Avid, the
parent company that owns Sibelius, along with Pro Tools and M-Audio,
has moved to Sibelius 7.  Don't even think about imagining a blind
friendly pro level solution for Sibelius 7 on the Mac.

Can't open an audio based DAISY book in in daisy worm

2012-03-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
Some of you may have been following my troubles on the viPhone list.
I'll summarize here by saying that I finally got the book I have,
which is in DAISY 2.2, into the file sharing section of the apps tab
of iTunes on my Mac. However, for the life of me, I can't get the
book to open. I can't get my iPhone to get past extracting book
archive followed by the title of the book. How do i open the book on
the computer which should transfer it to the iPhone.

Curiously, I've messed up my ability to get into the indaisy server.
trying to get into 10.0.1.5 yields a message that the connection was
refused. Also curiously, I did manage to get in once because of a
previous connection that I found in a list of previous attempts.
Unfortunately, I closed Fetch without logging out of that session but
having cleared the menu of previous sessions. So, I guess I'm in that
session but, because I can't remember the name of the server, I can't
get back there, or something. does anyone know the name of the in
daisy worm server?

In any event, if anyone could help me open this book, I'd really
appreciate it. I feel like I'm so close I can taste it. thanks for
everyone's understanding.

Re: Can't open an audio based DAISY book in in daisy worm

2012-03-06 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I finally got it working. While Daisy Worm was a no go for this,
InDaisy seems to work like a champ. It took a minute to get the file
to open. This appears to be because I didn't hold my finger down on
the file long enough initially. Whatever the case, I now have a
perfectly working copy of a music notation reference book on my iPhone
for future use.

thanks for everyone's patience and help.

Need to confirm the number of songs in iTunes library post MusicMatch

2012-03-13 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I'm sure this has been covered. But I have activated Music
Match. I just went to test how many tunes were in my iTunes library.
My iPhone 4 says there are 2400 or so. There should be over 3K. I
know certain tunes couldn't be matched. I went to my iTunes library
on my computer. while I can see the number of genres, artists and
albums, I can't get a number of songs. How does one get that
information in iTunes on the Mac? I want to be able to confirm the
number of tunes my computer says I have with the number my phone says
I have. I also know that my available space on my iPhone increased
dramatically post Music Match. thanks for any help.

2012-03-13 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Henry,
All was as you describe. thanks. Now, how do I reconcile the
difference between the number of tunes my iPhone reports and the
number my iTunes library reports? It turns out i have over 4K in the
library and 2K on the phone. There's no way I can hit and miss until
I find a tune that isn't on my phone. what can I do?

How do I save a voice memo sent from my wife's iPhone?

2012-05-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs
guys,
My wife recorded the sound of some frogs outside our home a few days

2012-05-06 Thread Kevin Gibbs
If I save the file by the means you mentioned, will importing the memo
into iTunes reference it at this location such as on the desktop, or
will it actually move a copy of the file into my physical iTunes
library?  I don't want to keep a copy of this memo on my desktop once
I've imported it into iTunes.I seem to recall that saving a file from
drop box onto my desktop had this problem when I imported that file
into iTunes. Actually, the problem was that I played the file in
iTunes and from then on it saved it to that position on the desktop.

Spotify accessibility on Mac vs iPhone 4

2012-06-16 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Has anyone noticed that, while Spotify seems completely inaccessible
on the Mac desktop, it does seem remarkably accessible on iPhone 4?
Curiously, I discovered that there are even certain things about
Facebook that are more accessible if you approach FB through the share
Track option in the Spotify iPhone app. Weird. Is there a workaround
for making Spotify accessible on a mac running Lion? For example, is
there an app in the Mac App Store that might make things any better?
thanks in advance,

SSD external drive for Mac

2012-08-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I had a very disappointing experience today. I bought a 128GB SSD drive, only
to learn that a Mac could not write to it. It was bad enough that I couldn't
find an SSD drive with FireWire ports, but to find a drive that could only be
written to buy a Windows computer? This was absolutely unacceptable. Does
anyone know of an SSD drive with FireWire ports that can be used by a Mac?

Re: SSD external drive for Mac

2012-08-05 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
The reason I wanted SSD was because this ins a storage drive for the files of
my latest studio CD. Speed doesn't matter. No moving parts should increase
durability over the very long haul. Drive is NTFS AND CAN't be changed,
apparently, so must be exchanged at store.
Ideas?
Kevin
PS. Mac mini can't even see this drive. Tried changing file system to FAT32 on
an XP box I have. No joy.

Disabling reopening last visited file on app specific basis in Lion?

2011-11-23 Thread Kevin Gibbs
is it possible to disable the feature that opens the last file you
were working on in a specific application in Lion? Let's say you were
working on a Pages document and you didn't want that document to be
opened the next time someone else used your computer. while that
facility is desirable in Safari at times, I wonder if it's something
you can selectively disable from one app to the next.

Well, that's the reverse of what I was asking for, but it will work

Re: Help! Lost iTunes Match

2011-11-24 Thread Kevin Gibbs
i don't know if this is the same thing. I think I have two iTunes
accounts, each with its own ID. I have some items which were
purchased with one account and one with another. the interesting
thing is that I tried to use account 2 as my iTunes match account but
couldn't get the PW to work on my mac. so, i used the ID for account
1. Unfortunately, iTunes match on my iPhone expects account 2. I've
transferred 3,000 plus tunes to the cloud using account 1 It's
possible that if I buy a song on my Mac with account 1, it may
transfer without a physical sync to my iPhone. However, if I buy a
tune from the iTunes store using account 2, it probably won't transfer
to my Mac without a physical sync. I really don't want to pay for
iTunes match twice. I guess I'll call Apple Care tomorrow. but if
anyone knows how I might fix this, I'd appreciate an answer.
thanks,
K.

Re: Music Notation software

2011-12-02 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Unfortunately, there are no solutions for Mac. the most current
solution on the windows side involves scripts that were written for
Sibelius 5.25 by Dan rugman in the UK. He is supposedly going to
release a set of scripts that work with several different JAWS
versions. For the latest information, consult the Sibelius Access
list at www.musicaccess.co.uk. the Sibelius 5 scripts have been taken
down to make way for the Sibelius 6 scripts. Again, there are no
solutions for Mac and Voiceover. You're simply out of luck. i
wouldn't survive without Sibelius 5.25 on the Windows side and
Sibelius Access Scripts. Sorry that's the state of things.

Daisy Reader under Lion

2011-12-14 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Guys,
I promise I have looked in the archives but can't find the answer.
Does anyone have a recommendation for a DAISY reader under Lion?
There's nothing in the App Store and I haven't found anything in the
archives here or on the web. I'd appreciate any help as i have a
large text book on music notation that I wish to search for specific
information. These folks were kind enough to read the book in DAISY
format and it would be great to take advantage of that.
Best,
Kevin

Re: Daisy Reader under Lion

2011-12-14 Thread Kevin Gibbs
I neglected to mention that the book was done by Minnesota State
Services for the Blind. It is not a Bookshare book. but it has four
levels of Daisyness, so I'm hoping there's a Lion friendly Daisy
reader i can use on my Mac Mini. I guess I could use one of the apps
that I see for my iPhone but I'd really prefer to use my Mac. Hope
I'm making sense.

Re: adding instruments in GarageBand

2011-12-14 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Native Instruments are completely inaccessible. What version of Logic
Pro do you have. Since it doesn't work with VO, how do you use it?

Need to burn custom CD with different spaces between certain tracks

2011-12-28 Thread Kevin Gibbs
guys,
I need to burn five custom CDs with some music for a grant
application. I need to put a five second silence between track 1 and
2. the rest of the spaces need to be the standard two seconds. I
have iTunes 10.5x. Can iTunes do this? It may be the case that the
music in my iTunes library is mp3 quality. I would prefer to insert
the source CD and rip the tunes I want to a folder on my HD and then
put in a CD-R and burn the selected tunes from the folder I just
created with the variable spaces I mentioned above. If iTunes can't
do this, can you recommend a program that can? I don't want to pay a
studio for such a routine task.

Thanks,
Kevin

Re: Need to burn custom CD with different spaces between certain tracks

2011-12-28 Thread Kevin Gibbs
Ray,
Where do I find "Burns," or "Simply Burns?" Also, if I didnt' mention
it, could I use this to rip some tracks off a source CD, store those
in a file on my desktop and then burn a new CD containing some of the
ripped files from that new folder I just made?Kevin
