Guys, You may see this note on several lists. My wife has a Western digital mechanical drive she uses for Time Machine. The last time she fired it up, we had a bit of a panic as it failed to be recognized or mount initially. While the drive did eventually present itself in Finder and do its thing, this isn’t the first time it’s given her a fright and we wonder if an external SSD would be more reliable than a conventional drive for TM. She doesn’t necessarily need speed. She does need peace of mind. We’d be willing to pay a necessary premium for this.
My questions are: Is an SSD more reliable or durable in this context? Do you have any recommendations for a 4TB drive to be used exclusively for Time Machine? Finally, if an SSD doesn’t provide greater durability, do you have recommendations for the best mechanical drive solution?
