Re: how to select text on a web page

Here are the various ways of doing it. Interact with the element for which you wish to select characters or words and use the usual Shift plus right arrow for characters and Option-Shift-Right arrow for words, and Cmd-c to copy to the clipboard.. Interact with the element and use the VO selection command VO-Return to start selecting and VO-Return again to stop, then Cmd-c to copy to the clipboard. Make VoiceOver speak the text you wish to copy and use VO-Shift-c to copy the last spoken phrase to the clipboard. Omni Focus
I've heard that Omni Focus is pretty accessible on iOS. I'm a big fan and user of task management apps, and I'v heard lots of good things about Omni Focus from non-VoiceOver users. For any task management system to work for me I have to be able to use it on my Mac. So I decided to download and trial Omni Focus. I didn't trial it extensively, but it appears most things are doable with VoiceOver, but there are a few issues that make it not a viable option. Firstly, VoiceOver performance is really sluggish in the app for some reason. This just makes everything a pain and really slow, which is not what anyone wants in a productivity app. This sluggishness is the main reason why I didn't test it extensively. I'm running Mountain Lion with 16GB RAM. Does anyone know what could be causing this sluggishness? Secondly, for tasks like selecting a project from a list of predefined options the app doesn't seem to use a normal popup menu or anything like that. You have to VO-SHIFT-SPACE and then interact with a table and then VO-SHIFT-SPACE on the selection. You can't navigate by first letter among the options in the table, and just using the arrow keys doesn't work either. This might not be so bad normally, but with the extra sluggishness it's really a bit of a pain. Just wanted to let anyone know, and if others have different experiences, particularly better ones, I'd really like to hear. I really like Apple's Reminders, but a more powerful task management app would be great. File sharing
Hi all Before we start, I do not mean share files across the internet on the mac; I mean share files locally from a Mac to say a Windows computer. Well I have now achieved the above today so that's progress on the Mac front smile. I have a feeling it's actually easier to set up file sharing on the Mac compared to Windows. I mean it's more intuitive to do. Everything can be done in the Sharing section of System Preferences. First check File Sharing to turn it on, make sure both SMP and ASP are checked, click options button, check any accounts you want to be made available for file sharing (required to share files across one or more Windows computers), click done and from your Windows computer it should just work by either searching for your Mac in the list of networks or by typing in a run or command box \\ followed by your Mac, such as \\chris-mac hope this helps. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hello Jessica, In your iPhone's Settings, under Goggles, Speak out must be on. In the app itself, the bottom righthand button should say Still Camera. The button to the left of that should say Record. The iPhone must not be on silent. Change language now should be on EN. Text-to-Speech and Voiceover speech rates
Hi, I am new to this group. I have a print disability, dyslexia, and I utilize text-to-speech to read. Recently, I have been turning the speech rate to the highest setting and I would like it to be even faster. I have found it not common for someone with dyslexia to request really high speech rates, but I have read people using voiceover may user faster speech rates. Does anyone know of a way to increase the text-to-speech rate without needing to use voiceover? I do not need a screen reader, but I do need text to be spoken. I didn't read much (just enough to get by) until I got a Mac with the text-to-speech built. I love this future, but just wish the speech rate would go faster as I have a lot of school work I need to read. Any suggestions? team viewer question
All, a couple days ago I asked about using Remote Desktop to log into my work server and run programs. Someone suggested Team Viewer, I think. I'm not finding it in the app store. Can anyone give me info on it? Will it allow me to read the screens displayed once I'm logged into the work server? These screens include a start screen with Windows8-like tiles and then the individual programs. Thanks. Re: Text-to-Speech and Voiceover speech rates
Hi, Thank you for the response. I must be doing something wrong still as I still can not get it to work. I have the Text to Speech screen open when I do this but it does not seem to do anything. Am I making a stupid mistake or do I need to use only Voiceover if I want it to go faster? I really would prefer using the Text to Speech function if possible. more on remote desktop
I'm thinking that maybe I'm beating a very dead horse here but I tried logging into my work server using Remote Desktop Connect. this worked fine but of course no speech on the remote screen. I'm assuming that some type of screen reader must be installed on the server side in order for any remote desktop access to work, be it windows or Mac? If anyone is using Team Viewer to log into a work server, please let me know how that works and what I need to get from my IT person in order to do this. I get the whole computer to computer thing with Team viewer. We do that all the time at work for things. It works well too. That said, logging into a server is apparently a bit different. Thanks to all who actually do this. Sadly these are some of the skills we need today to be productive in the workplace and I'm not seeing much beyond basic computer operation in so many vocational settings. then again, don't get me on that soapbox. :) Jenine Stanley dragonwalke...@gmail.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Hi Sarah. That command that was said below is only to control rate of speech using Voiceover. Not sure if you can increase rate of speech outside of Voiceover but of course someone can correct me if I’m wrong. I must be doing something wrong still as I still can not get it to work. I have the Text to Speech screen open when I do this but it does not seem to do anything. Am I making a stupid mistake or do I need to use only Voiceover if I want it to go faster? I really would prefer using the Text to Speech function if possible. Thanks, Sarah On Tuesday, March 4, 2014 11:05:56 AM UTC-5, Isaac Hebert wrote: You can speed up the speech rate by first pressing control option command left arrow to switch to the rate setting then use the up and arrow keys with the control option command keys held down to adjust the rate. Any suggestions? is recovery mode accessible with voiceover? I remember having to use it for something awhile ago. I couldn't use it though because voiceover never came on. safe mode is not accessible with voiceover. I had to use it recently. I can't remember why. I do recommend writing to apple accessibility to tell them about these potentially useful modes that currently do not work with voiceover so it can be changed. Re: good article on clean install of OSX
Sure it is. You need only wait a minute or so after pressing command+r and then launch Voice Over using command+F5. This version will only use Fred and it's good enough for runtime work such as you need the recovery partition for. Sent from my Mac, the only computer with full accessibility for the blind built-in! External Drives, CDs, and DVD problems
I *think* this started after upgrading to the newest Mavericks, but not sure. Whenever I put in a CD, or a DVD, or whenever I plug in one of my four thumb drives or the one external hard drive, I have to manually go into Disc Utility and tell it to mount. Does anyone know what I need to rest to fix this? I'd like everything to just automatically mount so I an get to it like it used to. Locking the iPhone in portrait mode under iOS7
Hi. When I first purchase my iPhone 4S over two years ago, I locked it in portrait mode and the process went without a hitch. The other day, I needed to do a reset of my phone and as a result, all of my settings were lost. Though most things are back to normal, I have been unable to lock the phone in portrait mode. When I originally did this, I went into the app switcher and swiped from left to right until I was presented the opportunity to address this issue. Have things changed with iOS 7? If not, could someone tell me what I am doing wrong? Is there a reference article addressing this issue with VO in the equation? My best to all and thanks in advance, Mike -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. It is done from control center. Find and double tap the "rotation lock" item. Click the home button once to exit out of control center. Re: Locking the iPhone in portrait mode under iOS7
Hi Mike, with IOS 7 you can gain back this functionality in the control centre. Here's what I suggest you do. 1. go to the status bar 2. Once here swipe up with three fingers going up the screen this should bring up the control centre for you. 3. Keep swiping right until you here lock orientation it is a toggle so you can turn it on or off. 4. Turn it on and with your phone in port rate mode that should be it. I hope this helps. Yes, there is a significant change in iOs 7. Tap the status bar at the top, then swipe up with three fingers. You should hear "control center"" This has a number of settings you can change on the fly. Orientation settings are on this screen. Hth, teresa Slow down; you'll get there faster. Re: Talking goggles
I've just tried the free version and it works for me. It displays ads but it still works. However, this is on a phone that also has the paid version, but I don't think that should make a difference. Did you find its entry in Settings and make sure that Speak out is on? Interestingly, I used it just now on one of my husband's English-teaching books and the language for the app was set to French. Goggles translated what it was seeing and did a reasonable job of it, too. Re: Text-to-Speech and Voiceover speech rates
Last time this came up, in 2009, I found a hack by editing the voiceover plist settings to go more than normal. Haven't tried it since but maybe it still works: https://www.mail-archive.com/discuss@macvisionaries.com/msg49064.html CB On 3/4/14 10:45 AM, nolimitsforl...@gmail.com wrote: Hi, I am new to this group. Re: transferring from mac mini to macbook
Fastest way is to just run a cat5 cable between the two computers and turn off wifi to force both machines to use the wired network. Both machines support Gigabit Ethernet which is about 80MB a second transfer rates, a faster pipe than many hard drives can fill. Using wifi or mifi is going to be orders of magnitude slower but might be ok if you don't have much to transfer and don't mind waiting. Re: Text-to-Speech and Voiceover speech rates
I just found a potential solution. The slider only goes up to a max of 350 wpm, but the setting is stored in: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.speech.voice.prefs.plist To see it, run from terminal: defaults read com.apple.speech.voice.prefs VoiceRateDataArray I get something like this: ( ( 1835364215, 201, 350 ) ) We need to change the last element in each sub-array. Back up that file, in case this fails. Then from terminal, run: plutil -convert json ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.speech.voice.prefs.plist -o - | python -c 'import json, sys;d=json.load(sys.stdin);[x.__setitem__(-1, 500) for x in d["VoiceRateDataArray"]];json.dump(d, sys.stdout)' | plutil -convert binary1 -o ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.speech.voice.prefs.plist - If it succeeds, reboot. Only because I'm not sure how to get things to reload without it. Once done, your system speech rate should be set to 500. Change that number as appropriate. To reverse this, adjust the slider in the speech preferences. On 3/4/2014 7:45 AM, nolimitsforl...@gmail.com wrote: > Hi, > > I am new to this group. If possible, or even if not, is there a way to mark mail conversations for deletion and then delete them all at once? In other words, I want to delete chunks of email altogether. 2. What are the steps to read from a chip? Where do I find the "drive" or "volume, and how do I open up the documents on that volume. How would I copy for instance an email address to the clipboard and then paste it into a new email? Oh, I bet I can't open anything on this as it was done all in windows, right? Well maybe a dumb question, but I'll leave it just in case my thought I had just now is incorrect. First, use rules in Mail itself, by creating a Smart Mailbox and/or going to Preferences > Rules. Alternatively, set up rules on your mail server. For instance, you can tell Gmail or iCloud to automatically tag or move mail to a certain place based on sender, subject, and other criteria. These are called filters. The advantage of server-based filters over local rules on your Mac is that filters apply to your mail on all devices. So, mail is moved to your Apple folder on the Mac as well as on your iPhone, for instance. > I would like all mail from each group" together. Sounds like you have conversations off. Go to the View menu and check "organize by conversation" to group mail by thread. Then, pressing delete on a thread erases all the messages in that thread. You can arrow through mail, as you know, but holding down shift as you arrow will select as you move. The delete key then erases all selected messages. Using vo-cmd-enter (Mavericks only) may work, I haven't tried it yet. > 2. What are the steps to read from a chip? Where do I find the "drive" or > "volume, and how do I open up the documents on that volume. Go to Finder, hit cmd-shift-c (for computer) and then find your drive with the arrow keys. Press cmd-o to open it, and from there it's like any other folder. The right arrow may also open it, that depends on the view setting, as with any Finder window. > How would I copy for instance an email address to the clipboard and then > paste it into a new email? Oh, I bet I can't open anything on this as it was > done all in windows, right? Well maybe a dumb question, but I'll leave it > just in case my thought I had just now is incorrect. If there is no way to > read or manipulate these documents, sorry for my question, but I still need > the answer to the first question. (smiley) Thanks for any help. To copy an email address, select it and press cmd-c. To select it from a document, open that document, find the address, and use normal navigation commands combined with shift. For instance, option-right moves right a word, so option-shift-right selects the word to the right. If the drive is from Windows, it is likely NTFS. You are able to read the files on that format, but you cannot write anything. So, you can open up a file and copy an email address, but if you want to modify the file, you'll need to save a copy somewhere else first. > > > > reggie and Allegra > > -- > You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups > "MacVisionaries" group. > To unsubscribe from this group and stop receiving emails from it, send an > email to macvisionaries+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com. > To post to this group, send email to macvisionaries@googlegroups.com. > Visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/macvisionaries. > For more options, visit https://groups.google.com/groups/opt_out. -- Have a great day, Alex Hall mehg...@icloud.com -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Extraneous chatter from VO
Since upgrading to Mavericks last night, VO keeps saying "Macintosh HD Volume group" as I navigate around the system, and when I'm in apps like Mail. I thought maybe the mouse was parked on the desktop Mac HD volume, or was landing there and it was set to speak whats under the mouse, but not the case. I remember someone else having this problem a while back but can't remember the solution. Any help out there? As I say, VO keeps interrupting what I'm doing, saying the name of the Mac HD volume on the desktop. . -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MacVisionaries" group. Re: Pages for Mavericks users
If you buy a new Mac capable of running Mavericks anytime after September 2013, you get iWork free. If your computer is Mavericks-capable, but was purchased before that date, you are out of luck, just like me. This applies to iOS devices as well. Re: Pages for Mavericks users
I think that is permanent. If you already owned an iWork app, you own it and can upgrade for free, as with all iOS or Mac apps. Well, developers can charge for upgrades, but they have to release new apps to do so. Anyway, the bottom line is that I don't believe there is a limit for that offer. Re: Talking goggles
Hello Ray, Talking Goggles does not use human beings to interpret what it sees. It does some OCR and some automatic translating as well as comparing images with stock images. So it recognises book covers, CDs and famous images, as well as interpreting print. It only reads a few words at a time, but for me, that's enough to identify food items in my kitchen. It will also read the main ingredients on cans of dog and cat food. Cheers, Anne On 4 Mar 2014, at 21:16, Ray Foret Jr wrote: > Okay, so, thing is this.
