Apple Care

2013-07-26 Thread Chris H

Good morning everyone.
My Macbook Pro 13 inch non-retina is coming up to a year next month.
Should I consider getting Apple Care for this product? As in, should I
sign up now or is it too late? Someone said one can sign up to Apple
Care at least a year after they purchased their Mac computer. Is this true?

Any responses greatly appreciated. Thanks!

math ml in safari?

2013-07-26 Thread Yuma Antoine Decaux
Hi All,

I'm currently working with a phd student to get math ml converted properly from
latex source files to math ml files. We noticed that safari doesn't read math
ml symbols, unlike firefox which does it out of the box.

I was wondering if there was a plugin to install for this to function in safari.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Best regards,

Yuma

Re: Apple Care

2013-07-26 Thread Dave

AppleCare is always a good idea.

It protects your computer from machine failure for a total of 3 years. If
something in the device fails the store will repair or replace it in that 3
years. Hard drives crash, batteries wear out.

It's worth it.

Re: Apple one-on-one training

2013-07-26 Thread Dave
It's actually called a "One to One" membership, and it's worth it.

First, your store may not have a wealth of Voice Over experience, but you
and the store creative staff will benefit from the interactions. You learn
about your Apple products, and they gain experience in learning more about
the software included in their products.

Additionally, you can renew your One to One membership twice after the
initial year.

Update on Apple Care

2013-07-26 Thread Chris H

Hello Everyone.
Just an update.
Thanks to your advice, I have signed up to Apple Care for my Mcbook Pro
13 Inch.
I went for the plan that covers Macbook Air and 13 Inch Macbook Pro.
Well that's what the store says anyway.

Cost was £199 including Vat and delivery is free.
I will get in the box some paperwork.
But what surprises me is that in theory, anybody with an Apple Id can
sign up to Apple Care, because Apple does not validate your order by
checking a product's serial number. Nowhere in the order process was I
asked for my Macbook Pro's serial number. I therefore would hate
customers to purchase Apple Care, only to find out it's not valid as
they bought it 1 year from the original purchase date for example.
That's like £200 gone down the drain!
I know mine will be accepted, but thought I would point this out for
potential customers on here.

With kind regards Chris.

Re: Update on Apple Care

2013-07-26 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
I have always had Apple care with all my products, and have only used it once
when my head phones went wrong just before I sold my I phone 4 S. When the next
I phone comes out, and it has more storage and scanner, I will then sell my I
phone 5 which will have Apple care on it for anyone who purchases it and it
will be unlocked. So if anyone is going to be in the market for an unlocked I
phone in the near future may want to bear that in mind. This sounds like that I
am trying to sell my I phone already although I'm talking about Apple care!
Apple care is cheaper if you buy at the time of purchasing a product as you can
only do it before the 30 days are up if memory serves, or am I wrong?

Kawal.

I don't think you can get it past thirty days, though. That is, if you don't

I don't know, it sounds like you'd be paying Apple to train them, not you, in

be able to offer it for free, or even a small fee paid to you, not from you,

The Apple Store website claims that so long as you purchase Apple Care
within 12 months of the original purchase date then you are entitled to
receive it.

Re: Apple one-on-one training

2013-07-26 Thread Dave
Well, they know more about their hardware and software, and much of what
Apple offers is beyond price.

Additionally, if you had someone come to your house to teach you how to use
your computer, that would cost you $75 an hour, instead of the $99 a year to
Apple.

It's a bargain.

Re: Apple Care

That's very odd. When my mother got her iPhone, I was on the phone with Apple
about 29 days later and the asked if I wanted Apple Care. They said that, if I
did, I would have to purchase it within a day or I would be ineligible, and
subsequent conversations with Apple Support have reinforced that rule. I don't
doubt you, I just wonder why employees would say something so different?
Perhaps the price goes up after thirty days?

Hi there
I had a very good experience With one-to-one training. It is always beneficial
I have found to make sure to put into the computer that you are working with

word. Also, I make sure to give the store about a week in advance notice before
I go. That way, they have plenty of time to think about that.

Re: Update on Apple Care

2013-07-26 Thread ppowells09
Hi folks,
When I got my 4S, I was told about 2 different apple care plans. for $99 I
could get Apple care that would cover one accidental replacement if it were
dropped in water. They needed to see the phone within 30 days of purchase to
make sure it was in good working order. The other plan cost $69 & covered phone
support as we all have become accustomed to. For that plan, I had 1 year from
date of purchase to pay for it.
Hope this helps.

Re: Apple one-on-one training

2013-07-26 Thread ppowells09
Hi,
I did pay for the $99 one on one training when I bought my mac, as I was new to
the Mac OS. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't pay for it.None of this
has anything to do with the staff or their knowledge as it does with the
inordinate noise in the store making it almost impossible to hear voiceover.
The store needs a quiet office where one can get the most out of the training
or they need to make use of face time in order to give everyone an optimum
experience.

transferring content from old to new Mac?

2013-07-26 Thread Donna Goodin
Hi all,

I'm excited to say I'm the proud owner of one of the new MBAs. Trying to
figure out the best way to transfer my content to the new Mac. I want to
transfer from a time-machine backup. Can I do this in Time Machine without
going into Migration Assistant? If so, can someone give me some general steps?
TIA,

Re: Apple one-on-one training

2013-07-26 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

Well I accept that stores are noisy. But Apple here in the UK have done
everything to make it easier for me. The trainer and I have a set of headphones
each that are connected via a splitter. All provided by Apple, although, I like
to take my own headphones. They turn off the music and attempt to find the
quietest area of the store. They have encouraged me to give feedback. They give
me extra time too. Because I have some travelling, my sessions are for 2 hours.
Yes the noise of the store is a problem. So is dealing with your personal email
in store but they were willing to set up a practice mail account, had I wanted.

I have had about 20 sessions and I feel it is great value. Even if I buy a new
product in the future. I think I would buy 1 to 1 because I'd learn about the
new features of the new operating system. I look forward to getting IOS 7 and
Mavericks training as it is still within my year's membership. It's great value
and the only way you can bring about improvements is to be in on the inside.
Instead of sitting on the outside crying about it.

Just my thoughts from experience.

Re: Update on Apple Care

2013-07-26 Thread Kawal Gucukoglu
Once you get the paperwork, there is a number that you have to call which is
the Apple Care line. Then they ask you a series of questions such as your home
address, telephone number and serial number. If anything changes like you move
then you have to notify them.

If you sell your Mac then you don't have to tell them as the serial number is
tide to the machine rather than your ID.

Hope that clarifies things for you.

Kawal.

 Hello Everyone.
 Just an update.
Thanks to your advice, I have signed up to Apple Care for my Mcbook Pro 13
 Inch.
I went for the plan that covers Macbook Air and 13 Inch Macbook Pro. Well
that's what the store says anyway.
Cost was £199 including Vat and delivery is free.
I will get in the box some paperwork.
But what surprises me is that in theory, anybody with an Apple Id can sign
up to Apple Care, because Apple does not validate your order by checking a
product's serial number. Nowhere in the order process was I asked for my
Macbook Pro's serial number. I therefore would hate customers to purchase
Apple Care, only to find out it's not valid as they bought it 1 year from
the original purchase date for example. That's like £200 gone down the
 drain!
I know mine will be accepted, but thought I would point this out for
 potential customers on here.
 With kind regards Chris.

How do you get the training? I have had my I Mac since Jan but I didn't see any

cannot remember. My Apple store is quite far from me, Either in Cambridge or

perhaps ot, google translate

2013-07-26 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi everyone,
I dont have a dictionary yet because they are expensive but sometimes i just
want to quicly look up what a given word is in english for example. years ago
this was not really doable on the net but i thought i would give google
translate a try, to my surprise it is accessible and even works with text not
just websites as i thought and the translation fo words is even fairly
accurate.
One thing htat i would like though and cant seem to find, i can translate from
dutch to enlgish or french for example but i dont see any other languages
listed, this would be nife if you want to know the pronounciation fo words you
translated. I would think that google has the capabilities for it because i do
remember that i could translate sites from for e.g. russian to dutch or
english. Does anyone know how you can select this when you are on the googl
etranslate site and actively translating words?
Is there perhaps a mac app that incorporates the google translate engine/server?
Greetings, Anouk,

Well, they should have told you that you have up to a year to put your Apple

You should report this to Apple.

Hey Annie, This is a topic we have discussed a lot recently, you can probably
find a lot about it in the archive. I think the general consensus on the best
RSS reader for the mac since the demise of google reader is Read Kit. I believe
I got it in the mac store for $5 U.S. Hope this helps. For the most part it is
accessible, and has only a few unlabeled buttons in the preferences, but you
can use a few work arounds to figure out what they are.

Yes it does, thank you for clarifying. With kind regards Chris.

Cost was £199 including Vat and delivery is free.
I will get in the box some paperwork.
But what surprises me is that in theory, anybody with an Apple Id can sign up
to Apple Care, because Apple does not validate your order by checking a
product's serial number. Nowhere in the order process was I asked for my
Macbook Pro's serial number. I therefore would hate customers to purchase Apple

I know mine will be accepted, but thought I would point this out for potential

Help Playing videos in safari or Chrome

2013-07-26 Thread Brian Fischler
Ok, for the longest time this has driven me nuts, as I rarely can get videos to
play. I know safari doesn't support flash, so what I usually do is open in
safari and use the develop menu to open in chrome. I saw a blind mac user post
this video on twitter, and I wanted to check it out but I can't get it to play,
outside of videos automatically playing when I load a page, I rarely can get
videos to play when you have to find a play button. Since I know a blind user
posted this, I figured I must be missing something when it comes to getting
videos to play. Here is the link I want to play, the woman going nuts in an
Apple store. Any advice on how to get videos to play using voiceover on a mac
with safari and/chrome would be greatly appreciated.

Re: can't erase disk on old MBA

Are you trying to erase the disk that you booted from? If so it won't
let you. You'll need to boot from another volume first. That could be
tricky with an MBA as you don't have a DVD drive to boot from. Maybe if
you boot from the recovery partition it will let you format the main
partition.

Re: Apple one-on-one training

2013-07-26 Thread Christopher Edwards

Hello,

Pam makes a very good point. However, the stores open for training sesions
an hour before normal opening time. At least they do here in the UK. As I
live quite close to a store I usually book an 8 a.m. appointment. I have
found these sessions very valuable. I always put that I am a Voiceover user
on my booking. Although some staff know more about Voiceover than others
they all seem willing to do quite a lot of research if necessary. I have
certainly discovered things I would not have learned from a list. Also, as I
do not have anyone else here with vision I have sometimes done something
that leads to silence from my Mac or inexplicable behaviour. On these
occasions the Trainers have been able to explain exactly what has happened
and I have usually been able to find a work around or a Voiceover command
that helps.

Yes, the Apple staff do learn as well but I do not begrudge this because I
think I have learned a lot more and have progressed faster than I might have
done. Also, I like the fact that you can have as many sessions as you like
as long as they have slots that suit you.

I did extend my membership for another year because over the winter I did
not have very much time to spend learning this new platform.

I guess that how worthwhile you will find this service will depend on your
own individual circumstances.

Hi,
I did pay for the $99 one on one training when I bought my mac, as I was new
to the Mac OS. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't pay for it.None of
this has anything to do with the staff or their knowledge as it does with
the inordinate noise in the store making it almost impossible to hear
voiceover. The store needs a quiet office where one can get the most out of
the training or they need to make use of face time in order to give everyone
an optimum experience.

Pam makes a very good point. However, the stores open for training sesions an

these sessions very valuable. I always put that I am a Voiceover user on my
booking. Although some staff know more about Voiceover than others they all
seem willing to do quite a lot of research if necessary. I have certainly
discovered things I would not have learned from a list. Also, as I do not
have anyone else here with vision I have sometimes done something that leads
to silence from my Mac or inexplicable behaviour. On these occasions the
Trainers have been able to explain exactly what has happened and I have
usually been able to find a work around or a Voiceover command that helps.

Yes, the Apple staff do learn as well but I do not begrudge this because I
think I have learned a lot more and have progressed faster than I might have
done. Also, I like the fact that you can have as many sessions as you like as
long as they have slots that suit you.

I did extend my membership for another year because over the winter I did not
have very much time to spend learning this new platform.

I guess that how worthwhile you will find this service will depend on your
own individual circumstances.

Hi,
I did pay for the $99 one on one training when I bought my mac, as I was new
to the Mac OS. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn't pay for it.None of
this has anything to do with the staff or their knowledge as it does with the
inordinate noise in the store making it almost impossible to hear voiceover.
The store needs a quiet office where one can get the most out of the training
or they need to make use of face time in order to give everyone an optimum
experience.

RE: can't erase disk on old MBA

2013-07-26 Thread The Smiths
Hi Donna and list

I am thinking with the various peculiarities I am having with voiceover, and
given I have only had the Macbook Pro for about 3 weeks, of taking it back to
default and starting again with a clean install. Have spoken to Apple
accessibility, even did a create a new user, and still the odd problems persist
so it was suggested that a clean install would be the way to go. Please report
back here to the list if you go ahead so I can see what issues I will have to
deal with if I can get my courage to win over my nervousness. Got the Command
plus r but have read things about moving some slider thing and possible
renaming of hard drive, so ... Donna you will be my example, give me the
courage I need. I will await your feedback, thanks.

Kind Regards

Hi Janine,

Actually, it was a piece of cake. The VO support from the recovery petition
was quite complete. I haven't followed the thread re the problems you've had,
but if a clean install would help, I would encourage you not to be afraid. I
found some nice step-by-step instructions at this link:

This is for the MBA, but the steps will be similar.

some basic itunes help

2013-07-26 Thread Jed Barton
Hey guys,

OK, I've had my mac for a bit, and now have an iphone. I know itunes can do
a lot for you, but I want to keep this really simple.
I don't want it organizing my library at all, cause I have a very specific
way that I do it for cataloging purposes.
What I'd like to do is have a bunch of tracks, in a folder, and just load
them on my iphone, is this doable? If so, what's the best way to do it?
I haven't even played with itunes on the mac or iphone yet.

Looking to keep it really simple like I did in the pc days of using winamp.
Also, are there any plugins for itunes that do compression or anything?

Thanks,
Jed

Re: Maverick date release question

2013-07-26 Thread Georgina Joyce
Hello,

It is true that Apple don't announce in advance. But between the IOS today and
the Mac Geeks podcasts there's speculation that September 18 for the new
operating systems and the 20 for the new hardware. Maybe the iWatch too!

Re: some basic itunes help

2013-07-26 Thread Ray Foret jr
Well, Jed, in terms of putting music on your Iphone without having to synch
through ITunes, yes, this is possible; provided, that is, that you are willing
to pay for a third party app solution. Here's a tip though. You see, if you
make sure that all your meta data tagging follows your folder organization
exactly, that is, you have your music organized in artist/Album/song order,
ITunes will behave properly and not mess up your stuff when you synch it to
your Iphone. At least, that's what they say. I have found that Wondershare
Mobile go for IOS is great if all you wish to do is to put music on your phone,
take it off again, and cause the music files on your phone to synch with
ITunes. However, there do seem to be some accessibility issues of which the
developer is aware. I do know of another app which can cause you to see your
Iphone as though it were a drive, but, forget just plain pasting your music
using that. The reason is that when either ITunes or Wondershare adds
something to your Music folder, some propriarity stuff happens that I don't
quite understand and that is why just regular pasting does not seem to work.
So sorry if this ain't what you expected, but, it's the best I got for now. My
hope is that others can help you better: for, you see, I too am interested in
this question.

Sent from my mac, the only computer with full accessibility for the blind
built-in!

The Constantly Barefooted Ray

Re: vo to caps lock

2013-07-26 Thread Esther
Hello Wayne and Chris,

Wayne is asking about using KeyRemap4MacBook, which was the subject of an
AppleVis podcast by Eric Caron on how to remap the Control+Option commands
to the caps lock key for use with VoiceOver on the Mac, with additional
instructions on how to get this to work as an insert key for JAWS under
VMWare fusion. Any attempts to remap the caps lock key on the Mac requires
the KeyRemap4MacBook application and the PCKeyboardHack file from the same
web site:
http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/
and
http://pqrs.org/macosx/keyremap4macbook/pckeyboardhack-usage.html.en
I think the point of confusion is that this is not an application dedicated
to turning the caps lock key into VO keys, but a general key remapping
application for the Mac. As such, the user would still need specific
instructions on how to remap caps lock to the Control+Option keys. And any
post that gave those details would also provide links to the necessary
files. I'll give links to two of my mail archive posts that provide links
to the relevant AppleVis podcast and guide posts, and also to some more
sources of information about using KeyRemap4MacBook to configure the Mac
(laptop or Bluetooth) keyboard for use with Windows under VMWare fusion:
• Use KeyRemap4MacBook to remap the insert key to Caps Lock [was Re: The
insert key in VMware fusion]
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg84983.html
• Re: VO keys needed in VM
http://www.mail-archive.com/macvisionaries%40googlegroups.com/msg89672.html

The first linked mail archive post gives links to Eric's podcast and user
guide for remapping the caps lock key at the AppleVis site, but also
explains why some other solutions for remapping the caps lock key (for use
as a modifier key for Windows under VMWare fusion) don't work. The second
linked mail archive post gives links to blog posts at the "Flint's
Geekiness" web site that describe how to modify Eric's instructions for the
current version of KeyRemap4MacBook. If you don't need any background
information about the layout of KeyRemap4MacBook, how to navigate it for
general use, or to listen to a podcast, then you can go directly to the
first linked "Flint's Geekiness" blog post in my second linked archive post
and follow its instructions. And you can ignore the links I gave to the
following two posts at that site, which are about configuring other
settings under the VMWare Fusion preferences for Windows operation to
eliminate conflicting Mac key definitions. However, for most users, I'd
recommend listening to Eric's podcast and reading through the user guide
and comments at AppleVis. The main thing that changed in the new version
of the KeyRemap4MacBook setup last September is that the instructions now
apply to navigating within the app itself, and not to separate preference
panes under System Preferences. You also no longer have to get a special
developer version of KeyRemap4MacBook, since all the changes were
incorporated into the current version. What Eric did not detail was
different ways of avoiding conflicts with Mac key definitions for Windows
under VMWare Fusion, since that is somewhat user specific and really about
setting up Windows use under VMWare Fusion. The two remaining linked
posts in the "Flint's Geekiness" blog describe how that can be handled
under VMWare Fusion's preferences. As far as I know, there's been no
reference to those blog posts on this list, since Jeffrey Shockley provided
the first link in response to Phil's question about ways to get an insert
key for JAWS under VMWare fusion, but Phil ultimately used Sharp Keys to
remap his insert key, and did not remap the caps lock key at all.

HTH. Probably other Windows users on this list can help with further
information, since I don't use VMWare fusion, Windows, or JAWS on my Mac.

Cheers,

Esther

Re: some basic itunes help

2013-07-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I would suggest making a playlist in iTunes. Then, go to iTunes preferences,
and under advanced, make sure Copy files to iTunes Media folder when adding to
library and Keep iTunes Media folder organized is unchecked. This way, the
music to iTunes won’t be duplicated on your drive and, there’s no way iTunes
will mess up the way your music is organized on your Mac.

So once your playlist is created, you can add the music you want to put on your
iPhone to it then sync.

Re: Maverick date release question

2013-07-26 Thread Ricardo Walker
Hi,

I don’t think there is a reason to wait really. Well, I guess you might save
$30 but, Apple usually give people the chance to upgrade for free if they
bought a Mac relatively near to the time the new OS is released.

I’m an instant gratification kinda guy so, take that into consideration too.

what accessible usenet client for mac?

2013-07-26 Thread Anouk Radix
Hi everyone,
It has been a few yeers since i have used usenet at all and usenet on the mac
in general. But sicne i will be getting an extremely fast internet connection
soon as well as a new fast mac my interest was peaked again.
What are you guys using on the mac? In the past i found it a priority to be
able to browse the usenet groups in the oldfashioned way but that is rather
inefficient, so a client with integrated usenet search (nzb engine)
capabilities would be nice.
In the past i know that unison (in contrast to transmit) had become rather
unaccessible. I think there was a webclient called nzbdplus but thats just nzb
downloading.
What are your experiences?

Mark,

Second Riccardo's thoughts. Just check with your Apple retailer about
upgrading in the fall. As Riccardo stated, for the last 4 or 5 years @ least,
they've included the ability to upgrade for free for people who purchased their
Mac in the summer. And, unlike Windows, upgrading is usually a breeze. Well,
it has been for me for the last 3 big cats.

Good luck, & buy that new shiny Mac,

Re: vo to caps lock

2013-07-26 Thread Esther
Hello Wayne,

To access links in a mail message you can use the contextual menu
(VO+Shift+M), which gives you several options, including "open link".
However, I generally interact with the mail messages area and use VO+Space
to open a link when my VoiceOver cursor is focused on it. For example,
interact, then VO+Down arrow or Down Arrow with Quick Nav to the link, and
VO+Space to open it. You can also use Quick Nav and web rotor shortcuts to
move to the next or previous hyperlink. I'm guessing that you just press
"Enter" to read your message. Interacting when you want to open a link
will ensure your focus is on the link.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
