Hi.

You can open the PDF in nisus writer pro, and when mark up your headings for
table of content quick and easy, and when save as epub.

Best Annie.

Re: accessibility settings in ML

2013-06-19 Thread Nicholas Parsons
No, you're right, Mary. There were some changes to the accessibility menu
(which, as Alex said, used to be universal access), including a new short cut
key. The various settings were also grouped differently. The VoiceOver Utility,
however, stayed the same, and that's all that most blind people need. I think
the most differences would have been felt in the accessibility menus for
hearing and motor disabilities. I'm pretty sure David Woodbridge did do a
podcast on this in his Mountain Lion set.

Re: making do with no vo keys to right of space bar

2013-06-19 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi,

This has been a huge pain in the neck for me. I'd also really like to kick
Apple for removing the right control key. Especially as there's a little space
in between the left and up arrows where a mini control key might fit.

Anyway, here's how I've dealt with it.

Like Ricardo, I too use the keybaord commander. Right option D is to move to
the doc, right option q is to move to the desktop, etcetera. There's a few
commands for which I need to move my right hand over to the VO keys on the left
so my left hand can hit the other keys. This can be pretty annoying, but so
long as you assign the most common ones to the keyboard commander you'll be
right.

I do have some troubles with the keyboard commander overiding other system
keystrokes sometimes though. For example, an e acute (é) is made by pressing
option-e followed by an e. But whenever I press option-e I launch Mail instead.
But the problem is not insurmountable.

So, in short, I can get by with my MacBook Air but I still much prefer using
the full Apple USB keyboard on my iMac. I say we start kicking some Apple
executives until they bring back the right control key.

Hi Nick,
This is only a suggestion. Contact Mike Calvo at the Seroteck corporation. He

Re: making do with no vo keys to right of space bar

2013-06-19 Thread Anne Robertson
I've been using an Apple laptop for 9 years now and I can tell you that there
never was a Control key on the right. There wasn't even an Option key on the
right until 4 or 5 years ago. Where the Option key is now used to be an Enter
key, not to be confused with a Return key.

When I have to use a full keyboard, it drives me insane. I can never remember
where to find the Home and End keys, and I'm just not used to using the
right-hand VO keys.

I really don't want Apple to change the laptop keyboard, and you can always
connect an extended keyboard if you have to.

Cheers,

Anne

Here's a link to the webpage I spoke of earlier that outlines the screens
that appear when installing Windows7. Before I installed windows7 in bootcamp,
I read through this guide and familiarized myself with the steps involved,
which made me feel a lot more confident about the whole OS install process.
If you're going to bootcamp win7, this might be a very good site to bookmark.
And of course, the Mac's bootcamp assistant utility has a printable PDF help
file for the bootcamp process. The windows install guide takes over once the
bootcamp assistant partitions your HD, then asks for your windows7 DVD, and
reboots.

Keith,

It is my understanding at least, though I could be incorrect on this, so I
encourage you to research things further, and I could, and will, be happy to do
the same for you on your behalf if that would make it easier, but I don't think

Re: iPad questions

2013-06-19 Thread Chris Gilland

1. > Can we connect a Bluetooth keyboard to an iPad

Absolutely! That will be found under settings, Bluetooth.

2. Ddoes it come with Textedit or similar?

Not per sé. You do have the Notes app, which will sort of work as a text
editer, but your best bet would probably be to get a copy of Pages for IOS.
It isn't free, but it is very reasonably priced.

3. I would like to take any photos from her iPad and store them on my Mac
that is backed up to Carbonite. We don't use iCloud so how would I transfer
the pictures to my computer? We have a wireless network if this can be used.

OK, this can be done one of 2 ways. Your best option probably will be to
use Image Capture which can be found in the Utilities folder of your Mac, by
pressing command+shift+U from the finder. The other way would be to set up
an IPhoto library, and then sync them to IPhoto. This could be done over
either USB or over wifi.

Thanks for any advice.

You're more than welcome, Max. Glad that I could help.

Chris.

VLC Bookmarks

2013-06-19 Thread Steve Holmes
Has anyone successfully used bookmarks in VLC? I found a way to add bookmarks
to selected parts of a long file but can't seem to find a way to jump to them.
You can open the bookmark window with Command+b and I can add, delete or clear
all bookmarks but there is no jump available. The documentation claims there
are hot keys to create and jump to bookmarks but I can't get that part to work
at all. It seems like to me that much of the documentation does not match what
I see in my version here. I'm using version 2.0.6 which is the latest you can
download from the videolan site.

Any ideas? I would love to be able to use bookmarks in these four hour long
files.

Re: Windows 7 Install Guide

2013-06-19 Thread Phil Halton
yeah, it's written from a sighted persons perspective.I found it useful because
it gives you a guide to what will appear and in what sequence, then a sighted
assistant (use them when available) can help with the details.

OK, but this does not demonstrate which keystrokes to hit or how many times
to tab etc. So, it's really hit or miss.

I think a better guide would be found at:

  Best of luck to you.

Here's a link to the webpage I spoke of earlier that outlines the screens
that appear when installing Windows7. Before I installed windows7 in bootcamp,
I read through this guide and familiarized myself with the steps involved,
which made me feel a lot more confident about the whole OS install process.
If you're going to bootcamp win7, this might be a very good site to
bookmark. And of course, the Mac's bootcamp assistant utility has a printable
PDF help file for the bootcamp process. The windows install guide takes over
once the bootcamp assistant partitions your HD, then asks for your windows7
DVD, and reboots.

Re: making do with no vo keys to right of space bar

I think I remember someone saying that they used a key remap app to set
right shift key to act as the right control key. Then, right option+right
shift acted as right VO keys.

Hi Mary,
I dove in to the mac world with a laptop & never bought a full keyboard.
There are times I have found the need to come to the left side of my

There are certain vo command combinations that I use a whole lot, like vo

my left hand alone. I'm guessing that having the track pad integral to the

Apple for getting rid of the control key on the right, but since that's

Questions About Numbers

2013-06-19 Thread Christopher Edwards

Hello,

I have just started using Numbers on my Macbook Pro running Mountain Lion
and, so far, have two questions.

1. How can I select a whole row or column? A trainer at the Apple Store says
you have to click on the row number or column letter. I cannot find a
keyboard shortcut to do this nor can I find a way of navigating to these
points with the touch pad or keyboard. I am sure there must be a solution so
please can someone tell me what it is?

2. Even though my spreadsheets have been very small so far I keep getting
"busy" messages and often have to force quit the program and on one occasion
even this solution did not work. I seem to remember someone saying that
increasing RAM makes a big difference. I have 4GB so would it be worth
doubling this, or maybe adding even more RAM than that?

Many thanks,

Chris Edwards

Re: VLC Bookmarks

2013-06-19 Thread Steve Holmes
One thing more concerning these, after you add a bookmark through the
bookmarks window (Press Command-B to open), you need to create a
playlist and save it. The bookmarks get saved in the "extended m3u"
file. I'm asking these questions on the list because I can't figure
anything more out. I was hoping someone else on the list might have
tried using bookmarks with VLC. I from time to time encounter large
sound files over 2 hours in length and bookmarking would be essential
in saving one's place and resumption of listening at a later time.

The documented hotkeys for saving and jumping to bookmarks doesn't
work at all here. But this method of saving in the bookmarks window
works for saving but no way to jump to that location in the media
file.

Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel

2013-06-19 Thread Harry Hogue
Hello Phil and Others,

I have a group of DVD-R's, and also CD-R;s. I burned the Windows ISO file onto
a DVD-R and then realized the DVD was in Mac Extended format. However, it
doesn't show up in the Disk Utility when it is just blank, so I can't seem to
format it to FAT32 or whatever format I need. I have Dropboxed the Windows ISO
file to have a person using Windows put it on the DVD, but is there anything
special I need to do in either case to make it a bootable DVD so I can install
Windows? The Windows drivers and support files it wanted me to install on a
USB flash drive formatted as FAT32, which I have done, and they are on there
with no problem.

I really appreciate any help. It is very kind and really useful. Once this is
done, I understand that Windows will run at native speed without the delay of a
virtual machine? But also if I understand correctly, I will still need to
reconfigure my capslock key to work as an insert key, or a similar key to do
the same?

Thanks so much,

Hary

comes out with Mavericks. that was the most exciting news I heard at

I use keyRemap, and now the right command key is a control key. So I have VO

I also followed some instructions on AppleVis to set my caps lock key as

Re: Questions About Numbers

2013-06-19 Thread Anne Robertson
Hello Chris,

You can select a column or row in Numbers by going to the first cell in that
row or column and holding down the Shift key, use either the right arrow key
for a row, or the down arrow key for a column.

As for your Busy problem, are you by any chance running Windows as a virtual
machine? If so, you'll need more memory.

Cheers,

Anne

Re: making do with no vo keys to right of space bar

2013-06-19 Thread Mary Otten
I'm sure Apple is not going to change the keyboard after all this time. I do
recall that when I got snow leopard, one of the reasons was that they had
introduced num pad commander, and it was also at that time that they stopped
the full keyboard, i.e. dropped the num pad and the right control key as well
as home and end keys, page up and down etc. Having used full keyboards in
Windows for ages, including getting use to a full complement of controls and
alts on both sides of the keyboard and a num pad, it was a no brainer to opt
for the full keyboard when I got my Mac Mini. And I still have a Windows laptop
with the full keyboard. Life will certainly go on.

Re: Questions About Numbers

2013-06-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I had good training at the Apple store, so you want to tell the person there
that there is no clicking ever. Tell them to please look up the keyboard
commands that Apple sent me. Secondly, I upgraded my memory to 8 GB, and
numbers has worked better for me ever since. If you need these keyboard
commands, which is called Macintosh keyboard commands, please let me know and I
will send them to you as an email attachment. Apple sent them to me.

Re: making do with no vo keys to right of space bar

2013-06-19 Thread Esther
Hi Mary and Others,

As Phil and others have stated, you can use keyremap4macbook to get both an
embedded Numpad working, and you can modify your keyboard to so that you
have VO-keys on the right side of the keyboard. Mary, since you're on the
mac-access list, you can check their archives for my posting of a complete
description on using keyremap4macbook last August. I also posted a link
to that post on the AppleVis web site guides and podcasts that Eric Caron
submitted. That post describes not only how keyremap4macbook works, but the
fastest ways I found of navigating to set up a variety of different types
of key remappings using VoiceOver.

Back in January, Cheryl Homiak described a slightly different way of
getting VO-keys on the right side of the keyboard than Traci uses. KR4MB
(to abbreviate) lets you configure keys that only act when they are used in
combination with other keys. Cheryl set up her keyboard so that the right
Command key acts as a Command key when pressed by itself, but acts as a
Control key when pressed together with the right Shift key. So, she
basically has VO-keys on the right side of the keyboard by pressing the two
keys next to the space bar, along with the right Shift key, reached by
stretching over with the pinky, I think, of her right hand.

Like Anne, I'm used to typing on a Mac laptop keyboard and executing all
the VoiceOver keyboard shortcuts without assistance, but I do like the
default action of KR4MB, even without the hack to get the caps lock key
mapped to be the VO-keys. First, you can automatically get access to an
embedded numpad on the right side of the keyboard. You get the full numpad
extending below the "7 8 9" keys on the top row of number keys simply by
pressing the "Fn" key together with the corresponding embedded numpad key.
Even better, if you turn on NumPad Commander, you can use these keys in
combination with modifiers to get the complete range of your customized
NumPad Commander definitions. And if you don't want to have the embedded
NumPad, you can simply check a box in the KR4MB preferences setup to
disable this feature. Then you could use an additional external NumPad.
But you could still use KR4MB to let you press the Command+Option+Shift
keys on the right side of the keyboard to act as the Control+Option keys
for VoiceOver.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel

2013-06-19 Thread Phil Halton
As far as I can remember, Just burning the windows file as an ISO image
will make it bootable. That means you have to specify ISO as the type of
disk to be burned in the burner software. I use "ExpressBurn" in windows to
burn all my files and in that program is an option to burn an ISO image.
Most burner programs have some such option.

Hello Phil and Others,

I have a group of DVD-R's, and also CD-R;s. I burned the Windows ISO file
onto a DVD-R and then realized the DVD was in Mac Extended format. However,
it doesn't show up in the Disk Utility when it is just blank, so I can't
seem to format it to FAT32 or whatever format I need. I have Dropboxed the
Windows ISO file to have a person using Windows put it on the DVD, but is
there anything special I need to do in either case to make it a bootable DVD
so I can install Windows? The Windows drivers and support files it wanted
me to install on a USB flash drive formatted as FAT32, which I have done,
and they are on there with no problem.

I really appreciate any help. It is very kind and really useful. Once this
is done, I understand that Windows will run at native speed without the
delay of a virtual machine? But also if I understand correctly, I will
still need to reconfigure my capslock key to work as an insert key, or a
similar key to do the same?

Thanks so much,

1) no, they won't help you with bootcamp
2) Hold down the option key for around 10 seconds more or less after the
boot sound
3) Yes, burn the windows7 iso so you can insert the disk when asked by
bootcamp utility.
4) I have a website address that has the steps (screens) involved in
installing windows7, and I'll shoot it over to you when you're ready to

on

them. When I did my bootcamp install, I had a sighted friend sit here and
read the screens and do some of the typing and mouse clicking to make the
process go faster and easier.

After windows7 is installed and rebooted, then you install the bootcamp
drivers that you burn previously from the bootcamp utility. Then you can
install your screen reader and take over from there. I had three disks
ready

at hand, windows7 ISO, Bootcamp drivers, and Jaws setup.exe
The whole process went smooth as warm milk through a puppy.

the only tricky part in the windows install was selecting the bootcamp
partition, and telling windows to format the partition before installing,
If

you don't do that step, windows will be installed on an unformatted
partition and obviously won't work.

Before I did any of this, I got the bootcamp installation instructions
from

the bootcamp utility and read it thoroughly, then I read thoroughly the
website that I mentioned to understand what was essentially involved in
the

windows install part. I think the reading is important - you don't want to
make any mistakes because you didn't know what you were doing.

BTW: I agree with you about the superb accessibility of MS Office and

That combo can't be beat for productivity work.

That is, BIOS (Basic Input Output system) which is what supports PC's at the

I can verify that at least version 7 of Parallels (they are now up to 8)
is not usable with voiceover. I can reach the drop-down menus and other
standard UI but all the controls for Parallels itself just comes up as
'unknown' and I can't do anything with it. Maybe they fixed it in

I am curious if any of these people who keep saying parallels is inaccessible

worried though that this might be one of those accessibility rumours that gets
propogated longer than it should because of course no one tests the thing

Re: Fusion boot camp or parallel

2013-06-19 Thread Chris Blouch
As others have mentioned, for bootcamp you have to partition your drive
into two pieces, a Mac chunk and a Windows chunk, which means both sides
will have less space and you have to plan ahead since you can't easily
change this down the road. That means you might have to allocate a bunch
of space to Windows 'just in case' which gets taken away from the mac
side. Fusion is just an app except the documents it creates are virtual
machines. You can give a Fusion virtual machine a large partition but
the 'document' will only use as much as needed. Just like you can make a
Pages doc that is 100 blank pages and it will be pretty tiny because
there is nothing in it. So this is a big advantage. You don't have to
know ahead of time how much space to give to Fusion. Just give it 40GB
or so and then it will only use the 9-10GB it actually needs and will
grow that space as needed. You launch Fusion when you need to do some
Windows stuff and quit it when you're done. Other than the disk space it
uses up for the virtual machine document it has no impact on the
performance of your Mac once you quit it. While it's running it will
suck up whatever CPU and memory you've allocated to the virtual windows
machine but then you quit and that all comes back to the Mac side.

I haven't used boot camp but disk utility is fully accessible so you
should be able to do the disk partitioning yourself if you want to go
that way. I'm sure others here can give the blow by blow instructions.

No, Refit is free and something you will add once you get your machine. Jaws
can only read the Windows logon/lock screens, not the boot screen. When a
computer first boots, no operating system has started yet, which is why no
screen reader can possibly be loaded.

Voiceover cannot speak on the boot screen since it is not loaded yet.
Apple

Yes, you can install JAWS or any other screen reader on the Windows part
of
your Mac. It doesn't matter whether it's running as a duel installation
(i.e. bootcamp) or as a virtual machine (e.g. VM Fusion).

I am curious if any of these people who keep saying parallels is
inaccessible have actually tried using it lately, or whether they are
just
passing along old hearsay that might now be obselete. I think Alex at
least
mentioned that he hadn't used it lately and things might have changed. I
was
told fairly recently that Parallels was accessible with JAWS, but that
there
was some problem with the JAWS key which is typically the insert key by
default. I've never tried installing Windows on my Mac in any form though
so
I don't know. I'm just worried though that this might be one of those
accessibility rumours that gets propogated longer than it should because
of
course no one tests the thing

the only thing that'll mess you up sometimes when working in bootcamp is
failing to remember that the command key (windows key) and the option key

1) no, they won't help you with bootcamp
2) Hold down the option key for around 10 seconds more or less after the
boot sound
3) Yes, burn the windows7 iso so you can insert the disk when asked by
bootcamp utility.
4) I have a website address that has the steps (screens) involved in
installing windows7, and I'll shoot it over to you when you're ready to
get

into the details of installing windows. They're pretty much right on the
money as far as what order what screens appear and what you need to enter
on

I think the reading is important - you don't want
to

make any mistakes because you didn't know what you were doing.

BTW: I agree with you about the superb accessibility of MS Office and
Jaws,

That combo can't be beat for productivity work.

I have a 500GB HD on my 2011 iMac. I just split it down the middle 256GB for

I suspect the iMac is built off the same motherboard as the laptop so
they might not have things engineered to handle the heat or power from a
faster drive. Or Apple is just being cheap :) The iMac takes a 2.5" SATA
drive and a 1TB 7200 RPM drive is about $120 from Other World Computing.
Downside is that to upgrade your internal drive after the factory is a
non-trivial bit of work:

http://www.macworld.com/article/1167510/ins_and_outs_of_upgrading_your_imac.html

so you might be better off just adding an external fast Thunderbolt
drive down the road, migrating everything over there and ignore the
internal drive (or use it for achive/backup). Interesting that Apple
does offer the 7200 RPM drives on the bigger (more expensive) 27" model.

address bar, I am directed to the downloads folder in Safari. Similarly,
when I press M in Safari, it opens Apple Mail even when I am in Safari.
This gets automatically fixed when I restart my Mac a couple of times.
 2. Sometimes, when I use the keyboard to type something, instead of
showing the letters that I type, it shows weird symbols like "Ó´".
Have I inadvertently enabled or disabled something?
 I'm completely baffled. Please help.

 Best,
 Rahul

Re: battery packs

2013-06-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I have actually used three different ones so far. The first one I got from
AT&T, and it costed about $50. I found it unsatisfactory because it did not
charge up my iPhone all the way. The second one was a battery pack, and I'm
sorry to say I can't remember it's name. The third one I just bought from the
Apple store, and it so far seems to be the best one. It is called the juice
pack, but it is not the one that is the case for the iPhone. The juice pack
people make one that is the case for the iPhone, and they also make another one
that is a battery pack. When I went to the Apple Store, They checked and
estimated the amount of charge I would get from this thing. He estimated that
it would charge the iPhone twice before it ran down. It has two ports on it to
plug a device in to itself.

Gigi

Anne,

Thank you for the answer about higselecting. I did think of this but thought
there might be something simpler.

As for the busy messages I am not running a virtual machine. I do not even
have Fusion. I might consider using it in the future but then I would
upgrade the RAM as well.

Thanks for your help.

Is one of the ones you mentioned the Newtrent one? I have one of those and it
has the ports on it you mentioned, and I love it.
I have the heavy-duty one, and find it absolutely amazing. I don't use it
for long periods of time, at least not usually, so usually don't have to plug
it into to the wall to charge again until maybe the middle of the week, but
it's been a real life saver for me, sense I really don't like having to look
for a plug whenever I have to stay overnight somewhere.
I've recommended this one to everyone I know who has a smartphone of any sort.

Hello Christopher and all:

I do not know what computer you are running numbers upon. I am not the worlds
most awesome user … that would be Anne. however, I am able to comment upon the
ram issue. If you can afford the luxury of more ram, I would do so. now, of
course, there may be some blow back from others stating that they can run
safari and numbers and mail and the US space program on 2 gigs of ram. Yes, you
can do that … just like I can run up hill pulling my groceries with a rope and
ox cart :). I can do so though why would I want to if the issue is being
productive and comfortable?

The ram will never go to waste. It is a fantastic investment in the life of
your computer. I cannot tell you how to spend your money … you would not listen
to me anyway :). To reiterate however, if you can swing it swing it :).

Hopefully this information was useful to you. Please let us know.

2013-06-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi there
I can't remember what the brand is; maybe I should. However, I do remember that
the instructions on it say that the battery life of the device can be extended
by not waiting until the charge is all gone before plugging it back in. This is
the because the number of charges in my battery pack is listed at 500 full
charges, and topping up the battery (the instructions say) does not count
against the 500 times. I am so used to the ones that you had to run down or it
ruined the battery that it has taken me some convincing to realize I don't need
to do that any more.

I have not run out of power while talking on my iPhone since I got it, partly
because of having the battery pack but also because of the ability to find out
how much power I have from the iPhone.

Re: Questions About Numbers

2013-06-19 Thread Patrick Neazer
Hello Christopher and all:

I still cannot tell you how to spend your money … you still will not listen to
me anyway :).

I have a Mac Book Pro and I bumped it up to 8 gig of ram and it made a
tremendous difference all around. You can bump it up to 16 and I did though it
is not necessary unless you just want to make your mac book pro last a long
time :).

8 is wonderful to start with and if you find you require some more, you can get
it later. this pro still hums and I got her in 2011.

Hopefully this email proves useful. Please let us know and good luck.

Take good care and I wish you enough.

Re: Questions About Numbers

2013-06-19 Thread Eugenia Firth
Hi Chris
If I had the choice of adding memory to my computer up to 16 gigabytes, I would
do it. In the last keynote that Apple did, they said that they were going to
make changes so that applications would make beter use of memory. I mean, if
they are going to take your old memory out and put more in, they might as well
do it once.

Gigi

Skype Issue

2013-06-19 Thread Scott Rumery
Hello,

I am having an issue with Skype lately in which the keyboard command for
hanging up a call does not work unless I go into the menu bar and arrow over to
Conversation. Once I do this I can dismiss the menu bar by pressing the escape
key and then my keyboard will work properly. This has been going on for several
weeks now. Is anyone else our there having a similar issue with Skype on their
Mac? If so, have you found any way to make the command work the way that it is
suppose to?

Thank you for any help that you can give me.

Screen Curtain and Screen Brightness

2013-06-19 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi all, but particularly Ricardo,

Can I preserve battery life on my MacBook Air by lowering screen brightness and
turning the screen curtain on? Or, to get the advantage of low screen
brightness, do I need to leave the screen curtain off?

Cheers,
Nic

Re: Screen Curtain and Screen Brightness

2013-06-19 Thread Dave
Screen curtain blacks your screen. It does not turn it off. It's painting
the screen black, so the screen is active. The same goes for IOS devices. It
does not save battery.

Dimming your screen brightness does save you some battery life.

I myself have not done any on Amadeus, but there is a very very! good

once there just do a search for the word Amadeus. the guy is taking an old

to edit, and move around, etc. It's quite in depth, and frankly, it's the

Re: making do with no vo keys to right of space bar

2013-06-19 Thread Nicholas Parsons
Hi,

Okay, Anne, you make a strong argument. I'll refrain from kicking Apple
executives for your benefit.

I played around with key remapping, but just using the options in system
preferences. Nothing worked for me though. From the sounds of things, neither
would the more advanced options. Having capslock as VO keys does nothing to fix
the problem that I have as capslock is also on the left side of the keybord.
I'm looking for VO keys on the right side of the keybord. Using the right shift
key as control wouldn't work as then I couldn't type capital letters on the
left side of the keybord. Similarly, using command and shift together to be
control wouldn't work as then I couldn't perform short cuts like
command-shift-d to send or add to reading list, command-shift-a to add
attachments etcetera. Also, that still wouldn't allow me to perform keystrokes
like command-control-a to archive in Mail without moving my right hand over to
the left side of the keybord. Well, actually, maybe I could hit command-a with
my left hand and command-shift with my right hand. Basically I haven't found
any way that makes my MacBook keybord as easy to use as the full USB keybord.
But to paraphrase Mary, life still goes on… Just a little less efficiently.

Re: Screen Curtain and Screen Brightness

2013-06-19 Thread Chris Gilland
You could do both, but frankly, I'd just lower the brightness as that will
take it down to literally the screen being turned off completely. Just know
that if you reboot, it'll go bafck to the default value. Turning on the
curtain does not get it totally off. It's extremely darn near close, but
there is an ever ever ever! so slightly dim gray glow to the screen still
when you do this.

I think personally, doing both is a little bit overkill but that's just me.

Chris.

Subject: Screen Curtain and Screen Brightness

Hi all, but particularly Ricardo,

Can I preserve battery life on my MacBook Air by lowering screen
brightness and turning the screen curtain on? Or, to get the advantage of
low screen brightness, do I need to leave the screen curtain off?

Cheers,
Nic

Re: Screen Curtain and Screen Brightness

2013-06-19 Thread Nicholas Parsons
HI,

Thanks for the comments and info.

I'm not really fussed about overkill. What I particularly want to know is, if I
turn the screen curtain on, will this undermine any benefit of having the
screen brightness at 0? I understand screen curtain does not turn the screen
off, but is it therefore the same as having it on with low brightness? I kinda
got mixed messages from you both but what I think you're both saying is that
screen curtain makes no difference so I can have it on and brightness set to 0
and this will conserve some battery life. Is that right?

Thanks again for your help.

Re: making do with no vo keys to right of space bar

2013-06-19 Thread Esther
Hi Mary and Others,

Oops, I goofed on the description of Cheryl's setup with KeyRemap4Macbook.
I said she set up Right Command+Shift to be the Control key, but it was
Right Command+Return. So you press Right Command+Right Option +Return (or
"Enter", if you prefer the Windows term), and you get the VO-keys at the
right side of the keyboard without interfering with other keystroke
combinations.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther

Really frustrating issue downloading movie with new iTunes update

2013-06-19 Thread Christine Grassman
I purchased a movie via iTunes and am attempting to download it. It asks for my
Apple ID, the download button dims, and after a few minutes, I em tossed into
the movie grid, and the movie is not downloaded. I start the entire process al
over again: go to the iTunes store, go to purchased, select the movie I want to
download, sign in, and . . . this has happened about four times already. Any
thoughts on what the heck is going on and what I can do about it? Already left
iTunes and went back in; already tried a restart.

Re: 2 extremely frustrating problems - please help

2013-06-19 Thread Tim Kilburn
Hi,

Maybe try a reset of your PRAM.

1. Restart or Shutdown your Mac.
2. As soon as the Startup chime sounds, hold down the Command, the Option, the
"r" key and the "p" key.
3. Keep the key combination down for two more Startup Chimes past the first
one then release everything.

See if that makes a difference. The key combination is awkward but totally
doable. Normally, I put my left thumb across the left cmd and option keys, and
my left index on the "r" and right pinky on the "p". If that doesn't really do
anything, then it may be an actual electronic issue with the keyboard.

Later...

Re: Screen Curtain and Screen Brightness

2013-06-19 Thread Chris Blouch
The way an LCD panel works is there are jillions of small 'windows'
which open or close a certain amount to increase the amount of light let
through for each pixel. Screen curtain tells all the windows to close
but that doesn't mean the backlight isn't still running full bore and
draining your battery. The only way to stop that is to turn down the
brightness all the way by hitting the F2 key about 20 times. Then it
doesn't matter if screen curtain is on or not. You can do the same thing
by using the Displays preference and interacting with the brightness
slider to set it to 0 percent. This one of those annoying sliders that
doesn't tell you what value it is changing to as you arrow up/down or
left/right so you have to VO-arrow off of it and back on to find out if
you reached 0 yet. I had to left-arrow about 21 times to get from full
bright to 0% brightness.

There is also backlighting on the keyboard which can be turned off by
hitting F5 about 20 times. I couldn't find a software way to fiddle with
this but I might have missed it.
